Oh yeah, thank you for the recommendation for the instant pot, I don't have much space and have a shared kitchen which means I couldn't use a traditional pressure cooker. Great explanation on brown rice for spawn and highly informative. I had unsuccessfully dug around trying to find out if parboiled was acceptable and just avoided it since could find no answer. Now I know. Also being new to the hobby started out using rye berries which (in my area) are about five times the cost of brown rice and requires a multi-step two day prep. Brown rice is the way to go. Thanks for the vid!

    • @Mycophilia

    5:22 can confirm that you can have great success by just steaming the jars in a regular lidded pot instead of using a pressure cooker. Just make sure the jars aren't touching the bottom of the pot. If you don't have a steamer basket for this then you can put some masor jar lid rings at the bottom of the pot to create a little platform for the jars to stand on. I steam mine for about 2 hours. If you can afford it then a pressure cooker is worth it just for the ease of mind, but don't think that just because you can't afford one that you can't grow mushrooms.

    I use brown rice. At first glance, people think it's more expensive, but it's really not because unlike seed grains, it expands about 3x and absorbs alot more water. Also it doesnt waste weight on the hulls which are already removed. For people with a walmart, the generic walmart "Great Value" brand comes in 5lb bags for $4 and works great and is the most economical/easy to find at smaller volumes. You can find large sacks at indian and asian groceries as well, but for smaller scale home/hobbyists the walmart brand bags are likely the most economic choice.

      Yes I forgot that part so I put it in the pinned comment 😅 as for the PC though, 30 PSI is crazy, that’s more than an autoclave! 15 psi is correct for the average pressure cooker many use in this hobby.

    I bought and used that exact same Uncke Ben’s long grain brown rice bag and all of those failed😢. Glad to see where I went wrong

    • @Mycophilia
      @Mycophilia  Месяц назад

      Yep, this is partly why I made this video. Brown rice gets a bad rep because a lot of ppl are using parboiled rice! I used to think that those uncle Ben bags weren’t parboiled as it wasn’t stated as such. Until I looked in the ingredients. However, there are also uncle Ben bags with the same packaging that actually are not parboiled, further adding to the confusion.

    Corn is WAY easier. You can't overcook it. It won't get soggy and is readily available and cheap. Some sell it in bulk. Boil it and then lay it out to steam dry until it's basically dry to the touch. The outer hull stays intact, and the insides are all hydrated and moist. After filling your mason jars, there should only be the slightest bit of moisture, only from condensation. Then autoclave and you're ready to inoculate. Only fill the jars 1/2, no more than 2/3 so you can shake the corn once the mycelium has covered it. Shake the corn and then let the mycelium cover the kernels again and you should be ready to go. Takes about a month.

      @@Simonjose7258 popcorn certainly is not a bad option for those in the States, but it is not readily available in many places of the world. Additionally, it is also less nutritious and most importantly, unable to be steam sterilized. You will need a PC for them.

      @Mycophilia thank you for the response I was just curious I've used Milo and had good results and I've tried buying pre sterilized grain from grow places and it's a crap shoot to be honest I've had some success and some failures but I don't think it's on my end I think it's because they're not doing what they need to be doing pre sterilized jars I mean I had better success with my own

      Patreon’s been dead for a year. They took it down. Had to set up a website, tons of work. It’s tough making videos about mushrooms when you can’t show mushrooms on here without risk of your account being taken down. So I post on my website instead.
