Put cool rice in just sterilized (I hoped) jar and pushed a little batting through lid and put on. Injected spores and put scotch tape over syringe hole. Didn't have much hope but already had pickle jar and brown rice is pretty cheap. A week later saw a little mistiness on inside of jar, thought it might be mold but let it be. By a week and a half jar is filled with mycelium and a day later mycelium is starting to climb inside of jar. Added it to substrate the next day and it was already starting to fruit a little. Here's hoping for a good mushroom crop. Thx so much for the video!

With oyster mushrooms you can skip a LOT of steps, because they are so virulent they will outcompete everything else in the grain/substrate. You can even use the 'stem butts' of very fresh oyster mushrooms in place of culture, which allows true self sufficiency at a home scale. You can EVEN skip the gain altogether and spawn them directly on shredded carboard. Oyster mushrooms are AWESOME.
True indeed. I did the cardboard thing with stems from the grocery store and it works fine (however, a bunch of those little flies got to it so I never transferred it to a straw bed). One question - when I harvest all of the mushrooms from this batch, can I just refresh the mycelium with more straw and get more mushrooms or do I have to do the whole spore to mycelium pickle jar thing again?

I boiled the straws for 30 minutes, after cooling down completely, added the fresh oyster mushroom bits and keep the mixture in a plastic lunch box, not even drilling a hole, 2-3weeks grain spawn ready. It’s unreal how amazingly helpful this video is. Such an awareness for the exact random and obscure questions/anxieties that beginners would have and having an answer or some advice
Just got my grain and have my liquid culture ready to start my Wine Cap's spawn for my garden grow. I'm learning a lot from your very concise and informative videos... Thanks from the Southern Oregon Coast.
2:13 Just to add here, the ratio of volume expansion between dry and hydrated grains can vary a lot by type of grain, specific brand/vendor, soak time and temperature, etc. For example, the grains you're using here expand by 300%, but popcorn would be more like 30% - and that would still vary a lot by variety of corn and the vendor. Basically, you'll have to figure out the specific expansion ratio for the grain spawn and recipe you're using for yourself. Every time you change any of it, do a test batch - fill up a bunch of jars with dry grains, measure the total volume, hydrate them using your recipe, measure the new total volume; wet volume / dry volume = expansion ratio. You could also just not care and guesstimate every time, but that easily results in either not having as much spawn as you need, or wasting and throwing out excess which can really add up over time. TL;DR - Test out and write down your expansion ratios for the specific grains you're using. Next to zero extra work, and it's highly useful data for planning out exactly how much grain you need for every batch.
Tape a few quarters to the rocker, this will allow it to go up to 18 or 19 psi before it starts rattling, allowing for a quiet sterilization cycle. Also shake and toss your boiled grains in a strainer a lot when you first drain them, the more you shake them the more steam can escape all the grains as opposed to just the grain on the outside surface of the pile.

A replacement for the pressure canner might be the instant pot. It is a small pressure canner that should do the job for several jars at a time and due to the instant pot craze many households have one already. Just my thoughts on that part.
Thank you so much! I was looking here in the comments specifically to see if anyone else was thinking this as I’m sure it will work …and I have an instapot I wanna try.
@@lyricaldawn something to note is that the instant pot doesn't get to 15psi, only about 12, so you will probably need to have it on for longer! however people have had success with it.
How long do the grain spawn jars stay good for? How do you make you’re own liquid culture? What kind of yields does a jar usually produce? What’s the best method for growing on a larger scale?
I have learned so much from you, thanks a million! One change I made was to the lid- I put the silicone on the bottom so you have a smaller target on the top, and I used the tyvek filters instead of poly stuffing. We'll see how that goes! Thanks again!
You can put the hot grains in the jar, after straining the water, and immediately put the lids on! Helps as well to have the lids and rings sitting in hot water right before you put them on the jars. The jars need to be hot as well to avoid thermalshock to the jars!
My GF's name is 'Jackie'. We went to 'thrift shops' one after the other looking for a pressure canner/cooker. We found lots of the little stovetop 'cookers' everywhere and on the 5th store, a Goodwill store, we found a Presto 23-quart pressure canner exactly like the one in the video. It was lightly used and in the original box from the 1990's complete with the instruction book. It cost $17.99 . The same cooker new is about $120. The name "Jackie" was written on the box by whoever owned it before which is super freaky.
This was a GREAT video! Thank you so much for taking the time to do it. I have just made the switch to mason jars and self-sealing lids because of you. Good timing as I was just drying out my grains and I had filled two plastic bags. Off to grab some high-temp silicon.😁
did you ever find a video like this? I am at the same stage. My jars are fully colonized and now i'm not 100% sure what my next step is. I was told to put them in a mono tub, open the lids and give them light, but these instructions are vague.
Psychedelics saved me from years of uncontrollable depression, anxiety and illicit pill addiction. Imagine carrying heavy chains for over a decade and then all of a sudden that burden is gone. Believe it or not in a couple years they'll be all over for treatment of mental health related issues.
Please does anyone know where I can get them? I put so much on my plate and it really affects my stress and anxiety levels, I would love to try shrooms
Made the self-healing lids today! It was a lot easier than i thought it would be. Thank you! These videos really help to make growing mushrooms seem un-intimidating :)
Lilly, I just boil my jars in a large pot and have had great success. Here are some good instructions: Now the culture jars need to be sterilized. Place the jars in a large kitchen pot/pan and add water so that water comes halfway up the side of the jars. (Make sure your kids are turned upside down so rubber seal is upward with tinfoil wrapped around the top of jar-this innovation helps prevent leaking) Bring the water to a slow boil and place the lid on the pot. From the time the water starts to boil, the jars need 1 hour to be sterilized. Water should not be bubbling and splashing all over the place. You do not want water leaking into the jars and changing the ratio. The jars should not be floating around in the water nor touching the bottom. Make sure they are resting on foil balls or jar lids. The jars should not sit flat on the bottom of the pan. Too much heat can transfer directly to the jars and cause a loss of moisture. You can place a wash cloth inside the pan and set the jars directly on the wash cloth to help prevent too much heat from transferring to the jars. Step 9: Let the jars cool slowly. Leave them covered in the pot/pan that was used to sterilize them. Let them cool completely. The jars need to be at or close to room temperature in order to inoculate. The spores will be killed if the jars are not cool enough when they are inoculated. It will take several hours to cool sufficiently. You may hear sounds as the jars cool. This is normal.
If you get the pressure canner you can also learn how to can food for a good survival stash and for cooking. Also been watching your channel for awhile.
Thank you for all the great info although it seems a little strange that you would need a self-healing injection Port next to an opening filled with poly batting. Wouldn't the poly batting act like an injection port just fine?
i personally would skip that step in total honestly, just remove the cotton/pillow filling and then put it back afterwards, I dont have too much experience but it is an option. hope this helps!
when all said and done, how long can you store these jars before using them to fruit? Could you hermetically seal them and put them in a fridge to put them in dormancy for long period?
Depends on the strain really, tropical stains well die in the fridge but some will be fine. They will last a bit just resting in a cool place though. Make sure it's fully colonized before storing.
Just found your videos, I have been babying some spors for some years was looking for a good way to keep them going . Thank You for your time and knowledge.

Beautiful job For me i do not use pressure cooker I boil my bags or jars for 1 hour in a regular cooker, few inches of water in the bottom, bricks, seed bags, and everything is totally fine with me Thank you for your tips. You are pro. 👌👍
Hello, I have a very important question: Since I don't have such filter jars, will it be a problem if the jars are completely hermetically sealed with no air access to the mycelium? Can the mycelium colonize without the presence of air in the compost (substrate)
When you transfer this to the substrate and mix where do you store the bin? In dark? How long until you decide to fruit? Do you have link to a video where you take about that? Thank you
Would love to see a grain to grain spawn tutorial! Also I'm curious if mushroom spores (in a spore syringe) would work just as well? Also you mentioned sterilising fruiting blocks, how does that work? So many questions!!
Straight spores work, you jsut want to make sure it's not too rich with spores. From my laymen understanding, shaking and using a solution works fine with multiple points of inoculation since it's all the same myc. With too heavy of a spore solution, you may end up having entirely different colonies trying to colonize at once which can make things take longer since you gotta wait for the highlanders to decide who's #1 first. Which then means a bit more time for any contamination to try and set up shop too.
Huh, the draining in sink method is interesting, haven't heard that before. That's the step that always gives me the most grief, even though it should be the most passive lol. Putting grains in strainers, I feel like it takes several hours for them to get dry on the outside. There's so much steam trapped inside. Gotta try this way
5:36 an easier way to do this without risking the plug moving under the weight of the grain is to put a sponge in the bottom of the sink so that the water is able to flow through while stopping the grains
When making your lids, you can use a wet paper towel to flatten out the RTV for a nice smooth injection port :) The silicone won't stick to it even as sticky as that stuff is. 🍻 P.S. Thanks for the vid! And the clap was GREAT! XD
Hi fresh! Thanks for all your great videos. So I got 2 years of growing under my belt. Got a flowhood and all big greenhouse. So my question was.. when opening the sterile syringe cap. Wouldnt it contam? My guess is that because you try to do it as fast as you can your success rate is very high? Is that correct? I mean.. when you take of the syringe cap of the syringe you exposed the tip of the syringe to none sterile air before putting the cap on? If you would open the grain jar. Even for 1 second. The jars would contam for sure. How come its "ok" to expose the syringe opening even for a little bit?
I have been making some. Essentially the same process except you make a liquid for mycelium to eat instead of grains. I got some ready to mix liquid culture media from shroomsupply
A couple questions. 1. If making 10 jars how long do they last? Would you use hem all on the same day or can you space it out? 2. How much can each jar make? Would one jar make 1 bucket? Thanks so much.
Great video. But I wonder, why couldn’t you just inject the syringe through the cotton entry point if it does a decent job of keeping competing spores out as is?
Hi I am new here! I'm not sure if anyone has asked this yet (tried scrolling to see but so many comments), but how long is the shelf life for one of these grain culture jars? Like do they have to be used as soon as they are fully cultivated? Or can they sit for like a week, a month... or even a year? Thank you in advance!
they will attempt to fruit inside the jar but won’t be able to fully due to the lack of space, mycelium will probably piss a lot but it will stay alive a good while
I'd say it depends on the kind of mushrooms. The ones in my area spawn once a year so they'll grow mushrooms a couple times spend all year in hibernation and restart once temp/humidity is right again. The ground can be stirred during the hibernation phase too, which helps aerate it and allow space for the mushrooms to grow - so essentially if you let your mushrooms spawn and spread their spores you could theoretically get them again every year (provided you get the right conditions)
This is all new to me but very excited to get started. The content you provide is super helpful and very well delivered. A question I have is once the culture is injected is there an optimum temperature to store the jars in? Also would you store the jars in a light deficient environment?
Hey- great video! Two questions: 1) after the 90 minutes at 15 psi, should I take the jars out from the Canister or just turn off the stove and let them cool? 2) How long after taking the jars from the pressure cooker should I wait to inoculate the jars? Thanks
Can anyone please explain how do you ensure the grain spawn do not catch contaminants while they are drying if you leave them in a sinc or on a drying rack?
it sounds like to me from watching the video that even after you dry them I don't think it would really matter if you sterilize it in the pressure cooker anyways. I mean I could be wrong if I am somebody correct me please .. but that would be my first thought... But I have never grown mushrooms before except for a couple growing kits I bought I've never done this process but I'm trying to learn about it but for a second I thought the same question and then he went onto the pressure cooker so I figured okay it's going to get sterilized after that anyway so any risk of contaminants from drying them would be no more.. if there was any risk I don't think he would have continued the process injecting them with the spores.
There's a safer (but still cheap) way to innoculate that doesn't require a flowhood: A still air box (SAB). Pick up the biggest clear plastic totebox you can find at Walmart or the nearest supermarket, take a metal coffee can, use it to trace circles on the SAB where you want the armholes, put the bottom of the coffee can on a hot burner, then use mitts to grab it and carefully press & twist through the circles. When working the SAB: you'll want to move carefully so you don't stir up the air too much. Wear gloves, sanitize with alcohol inside the box, flame sterilize tools outside the box before moving them inside (in that order!) and don't put your hands directly over anything you want to stay clean. If you want to learn how to use agar, these will be essential skills to practice. Cheers!
Wasted so much time making one of these, plus all the effort to sterilize the environment. Listen, I know the idea of sunk cost, and you still want to hold on to how much better this is because of the effort you put in, but... the way he showed has never failed me. I mean... never. So honestly, there's no need to go through any effort/cost
tips ive learned through trial and error: when making the holes you can simply use a hole punch(er) and ditch the drill when making the injection ports use a wet paper towel to shape the blob of rtv red high temperature silicone aka gasket marker if you cant find it at home depot or lowes give auto zone or oreilys a trip! for the gas exchange hole id say dont use the pillow stuffing fibers but use instead some micro pore tape and if you can get some plastic mason jar lids id go with that over the metal to avoid rust instead of letting it soak overnight let it simmer for maybe 5-15 mins or just until its soft on the outside but hard in the middle when your draining them use a sifter the metal kitchen ones its very helpful use tinfoil over the top when sterilizing when injection the liquid culture dont bother heating the tip of the needle til its red hot unless your using it for 2-3+ jars but other than that it comes sterile make sure to store it in a fridge it can last up to a year to a year and a half when refrigerated i shake 3 times during colonizing but that is up to you have fun growing! and stay safe everyone

Hey Tony. Thank you for your super informative videos! I am becoming an avid mushroom grower due to watching your vids. I have a quick question. I started soaking my rye grains while I was waiting for amazon to deliver my mason jars and high temp silicone. I just got everything today but started soaking my grains last night. I'm worried I might have started soaking them a little bit early due to the fact that I have to wait 24 hours for the silicone to dry. Do you think it would be okay to soak and cook the grains and put them in the jars with foil covering them while waiting for the silicone to dry completely, then throw them in the pressure cooker? Just concerned about the grains sitting too long. If you could let me know that would be great. Thank you so much!
Great content ! , I just started to grow myself and I'm thinking on doing my own spawn since I usually buy it. I got a question, how long can last the culture in the syringe without dying?
Most suppliers say to use the culture in the syringe within 30 days. That can vary according to the kind of mushrooms. And that time can usually be extended by a few weeks or even months by keeping the syringe in the refrigerator but DO NOT freeze it!
I was ripped off my 💰 severally by online scammers, until I found a legit dealer that ships spores to me. I only buy from them and no other. They have been delivering without disappointing
I do agar simply with a microwave and H2O2. For spawn, I use store bought brown rice since they already sterilize it. Not the cleanest, but gets the good stuff easily. :)

How long will the grain spawn last and how should it be kept? And is there a limitations how many generations you can make?
Next to zero extra work, and it's highly useful data for planning out exactly how much grain you need for every batch.
ruclips.net/video/tgyOq7SX348/видео.html we just need to legalize it Oregon already has it Washington's trying to Seattle decriminalized it
wondering about using brown rice and popcorn as the grain good idea or not???
Or… use brown rice for the grain, if there’s too much, have a side of rice with dinner.
Nice with a strainer you don’t need to just dump in a sink right?
Does that increase the risk of a critical failure and explosion?

Can I sterilize those jars in the oven? Do I really have to use a pressure canner?
Small jars can be done in an Instant Pot.
Lilly, I just boil my jars in a large pot and have had great success. Here are some good instructions:
Now the culture jars need to be sterilized.
Step 9:
Let the jars cool slowly.

Thank you for all the great info although it seems a little strange that you would need a self-healing injection Port next to an opening filled with poly batting. Wouldn't the poly batting act like an injection port just fine?

Update??
Philly golden teacher has amazing videos about it
@@rebelztheories2632 I agree the best
Huh, the draining in sink method is interesting, haven't heard that before. That's the step that always gives me the most grief, even though it should be the most passive lol. Putting grains in strainers, I feel like it takes several hours for them to get dry on the outside. There's so much steam trapped inside. Gotta try this way
This is excellent!!! I’m just starting out and this is a perfect startup process!! And just purchased a pressure canner for canning!!
5:36 an easier way to do this without risking the plug moving under the weight of the grain is to put a sponge in the bottom of the sink so that the water is able to flow through while stopping the grains
Even better, lay a cloth in the sink first, or in a large colander, and you can gather up the whole lot with no mess.

@@FreshCapMushrooms Liquid culture too if not already done

I have been making some. Essentially the same process except you make a liquid for mycelium to eat instead of grains. I got some ready to mix liquid culture media from shroomsupply
I like the big Sphincter from 8:40 on.
And I like your work in New Amsterdam too.
Yes, this was my exact question! The self healing port is cool but through the polyfill seems the simpler solution.
@@TheKittenMX it would leave a mycelium trail through the poly fill and contamination would enter through the trail

When PC'ing ...You should vent 15 minutes after start seeing the steam coming out of the vent pipe, before adding the weight.

@@bobcat8311 To make sure you are pressurizing steam, not air. You need to vent the air for complete sterilization.
Because steam is what you want ....not pockets of air.

Good question. I’ll wait for an answer.
they will attempt to fruit inside the jar but won’t be able to fully due to the lack of space, mycelium will probably piss a lot but it will stay alive a good while
I'd say it depends on the kind of mushrooms.
LOVE your videos!! They're so helpful and have given me success from the beginning!! No contamination issues.
Hey- great video! Two questions:
1) after the 90 minutes at 15 psi, should I take the jars out from the Canister or just turn off the stove and let them cool?
2) How long after taking the jars from the pressure cooker should I wait to inoculate the jars?
Thanks
I let them cool overnight. They stay hot for a LONG time. I've never done 90minutes. All my sources say 45.
About how long does the spore syringe stay viable say if I were to buy a syringe but not use it right away?
I've read that someone kept one at room temp for a year and it still worked, I'd recommend storing syringes in your refrigerator though.
I use my instant pot for sterilization . Works the same as a presto pressure canner. Thanks for your information
God bless you bro, this Is the best and straight forward video of making grain spawn, thanks bro

Just concerned about the grains sitting too long. If you could let me know that would be great. Thank you so much!
