So, as this video was uploading, I remembered that the old HGUC and MG Ground Gundam come with a marking sticker sheet that only has the 1st, 4th, 6th and 8th MS team on them. That confirms my suspicion of the 5th team being a GM team.
Also, while I typically prefer the “20 Ground Gundams in total” number, I also found 1 source that states that 20 Ground Gundams were assigned to the Kojima Battalion. (ガンダムの常識, p.134) Seeing as how they had to repair Karen’s Gundam with a GM Head, and Shiro’s Gundam with whatever they had lying around, I find it doubtful that they had 8 spare Gundams hanging around.

What I like about the 2018-ish release of the 1/144 HG of the RX-79[G] is the number decal sheet has a large number 0-9 and small number 0-9 x 3. So you can head canon quite well...

I absolutely Love the 08th MS Team and the Ground Type Gundam Specifically. Really gives the feeling of combat between large, heavy, and technologically complex war machines. And not only war machines individually but war machines as part of a functioning unit where they have fireteams, platoons, logistics and support elements.
On top of that there are moments that just ground(pun not intended) the world that they've built.
    For example:
    1) Shiro's Ground Gundam getting bogged down and having to be repaired in the field
    2) The fact that they have to do a prep before heading into desert zones in order to "sandproof" their units with the use of sandguards in between joints and sandshields for vents
    3) The Recovery vehicle we see in the intro pulling out a ground Gundam that's been disabled from the sand
    4) The fact that an MS team has a Logistics truck attached to it and isn't just all mobile suits
    5) The Logistics truck actually being functional: being used for communications, command, supply and temporary base of operations if the situation calls for it.
    6) The display of infantry being effective against unsupported armored units(When the Zakus get ambushed in the village by guerilla fighters with ATGMs[or would it be AMSGM/Anti-Mobile Suit Guided Missile?])
    7) The use of things like thermal sights and radios
    8) Range limitations on specific weaponry
    9) The existence of the EZ8 as a field modification
    Bonus:
"EZ8" is a reference to arguably the most advanced WW2 variant of the M4 sherman tank; the M4A3E8 which was nicknamed by the troops as the "Easy Eight".
    M4-M4 Sherman Tank base
A3-Engine and Hull Layout variant 3
E8-Experimental System #8 (In this case, the experimental HVSS[Horizontal Volute Spring Suspension] system)

I think the entirety of the Zeta line deserves a deep dive, since it went as far as Gundam Unicorn with the creation of the ReZel.
Pretty crazy to see that the Zeta Gundam probably had so much impact among the AEUG, Karaba and the EFF if they had managed to create a lot of those variations. It makes you think how is it that the ZZ Gundam didn't garter the same attention, especially with the opportunities to work out some of its flaws and improve upon its design. Perhaps all of it got lost at the end of ZZ Gundam?

  • @Dangaio
    @Dangaio 4 года назад +103

Given that Gundams are essentially cutting-edge tech, I figure 3 Ground Gundams are probably reserved for testing or lost for some reason or other. At least one would be a test-bench mule, while the other two would either be manufacturing errors, replacement reserves, or simply be lost in transit since Madeas fall down a lot. There's also an argument that they were built and immediately parted out to repair deployed units that pilots got messed up by being careless with their new super-weapon(Shiro).

I remember a theory a friend of mine had way back when we first watched this series. Basically he sported the idea that originally the Kojima Battalion was made up of entirely Ground Gundams but overtime and increasing losses saw GM Ground Types replacing lost Ground Gundams which gave us the mix we see in this video. Since he never understood the reasoning for the mix of Ground Gundam and GM Teams like they are in Kojima Battalion. He thought that the Ground Gundams should either be split into their own dedicated company or used as Command Units for the Battalion's Team Leaders. He then came up with this mentioned theory to explain it.

Glad this video was able to clear up any in universe ms designation misconception’s cause I wasn’t sure what each ms team had exactly for their respective squads,
cause I could’ve sworn I remember seeing a shot of 2 Gundam Ground Types with the 07th ms team designation where as when I look at the product shots for the HGUC GM Ground all of them show the 07th insignia.
which spawned the question of: did some ms teams have 2 Ground Type GM’s and 1 Gundam Ground Type and did other ms teams have 2 Gundam Ground Types and 1 Ground Type GM???:|
The reason this question spawned into my head was because if I ever got around to making a full HGUC Kojima Battalion display with all 8 ms teams, I would need to know what units were apart of each respective ms team so that I could buy the accurate number of Gundam Ground Type and GM Ground Type kits that I would need:3
Also does anyone know which ms teams the 4 GM Ground Type Sniper units were assigned to?? I genuinely have no clue regarding that!:~

Three unaccounted for Ground Gundams, huh?
(Seattle-based "Slayer of Zeon" unit intensifies).
Its a Ground Gundam but its got the scavanged head of Garma Zabi's personal Zaku strapped to its shoulder as an additional sensor pod. It was originally sent to the refurbished California Base but it got "lost' along the way due to Federation incompetence and was picked up by a non-standard but pro-Fed militia unit that had been operating out of the Seattle Wasteland since Zeon bombed the crap out of it.
When the White Base killed Garma off, the Seattle resistance group scavanged from his crashed ship and found his busted Zaku. When they received the Ground Gundam, the pilot requested they stick the severed Zaku head on it for psychological warfare, and later linked the existing Zaku sensor and monoeye into the Gundams firmware, basically giving him eyes in the back of his head.

    • @AlphaRaptor2k6
      @AlphaRaptor2k6 4 года назад +2

The Slave Wraith could be another one of the last three(or two), and he did mention the three blue destiny units. The Ez8 is just a repaired/remodeled unit(after Shiro wrecked it clinging the Apsalus(so sorry for spelling) II), given the quick design/manufacturing of the ground GM and even more rare Gundam types built with leftover parts from Project V(i.e. what was left at Jabaru) replacement parts weren't even in existance save for limited Ground GM parts. The Ground GM's and Gundam's weren't standardized to the mainline GM's or even other Gundam's built by The Federation, they were a quick frontline force created to blunt Zeon's thrust towards Jabaru to take out the Federal Forces main military base there. It worked long enough for Standardized GM's to begin walking off the production lines there and other secure places.

If anything, the entire 5th MS Team may be the GM Sniper Team, and then another GM Ground Type from one of the other 3 teams using them as well (2nd, 3rd, 7th). This completes the amount of GM Ground Types made into GM Snipers, as well as the reason why the 5th MS team was "absent" from the OVA, and honestly it would be more logical to turn an entire team instead of taking a GM from each team. If you told me the fourth Sniper was for backup fire against the Apsalus, I'd agree with you.

-Matt Healy The EFSF Ace pilot
He actually has his own manga - I found part one of war chronicles in the surplus of a closing down library
It’s focused all on the UC ground operations you would love it with your appreciation for this stuff
Love the videos man by the way. I’ve said it before but again the proper job with the lore in your work is greatly appreciated.
Anyway you should check it out - it’s a nice little look into what was happening with the teams besides the 08th
Matt Healy actually uses an orange GM in the book and there are no ground Gundams in his team but that might come in part two which I have not been able to get my hands on yet.
so I guess the different video game companies just take a jab at the actual canon story line sometimes putting in good effort and sometimes doing things with less consideration.
Anyway they even use a gun tank and it has truly spectacular art throughout. Very brilliant illustrations

Of course, the wiki did mention that the captured Gundam took down 2 dozen Ground GMs and Ground Gundams so definitely non-canon. I think the other 3 ground types were scraped for parts and repairs because ground types only share 80% parts with GMs so the other 20% had to come from other ground types and many mobile suits in the ground series sustained damages that required the other 20% example: Karen's mobile suit.

  • @Felix24148

One other Gundam Ground Type may be accounted for from the Gundam Climax manga. Kamuna Tachibana piloted one in the defense of Jaburo. But was later forced to switch over to a GM with a dual beam saber backpack for space combat. It actually makes sense that Kamuna Tachibana got a Ground Gundam because he was the son of a Lieutenant General in the Federation higher-ups. Also if you were to look into the lore of the GM Ground Type too, the Slavewraiths had used three initially and then later just one. And one was shown to be used by a team commander that was after the Slavewraiths. Another Ground GM was used as the Blue Destiny prototype too. Terry Sanders also was seen piloting a Ground GM in the Stardust Manga. So they definitely got around. Since there were technically more spare parts for the Ground GM than the Ground Gundam, I wonder if more of them were built than the initial production numbers listed.

not to be boring but it might be possible that the missing 3 might just be mothballed in a fed warehouse somewhere either because there might not have been any available battalions to assign them to, they could've been turned into spare parts (Karen's and the EZ8 might've just gotten the short end of the stick and other teams might've gotten them first), or going back to the mothballed idea, they could've been left to dust once more generalized, massed produced GMs became widespread and standard

As for the confusion of 05th team being GM or Gundam and the 04th team in the game, the way I look at it is that there would be different divisions/battalions etc. An irl example are the US army 1st cav division and 1st armored divisions. Both are referred to as 1st, and both have "2nd battalions.". One can look at the differences with Gundam 05th team and a 04th GM team as being assigned to a different battalion.

Maybe reword the former part into “Gundam Exia repair history” given how many times this one Gundam had to be rebuilt. Despite Setsuna worshipping the Exia like a goddess, it took so much punishment on the battlefield that Setsuna piloting any version of the 00 is the equivalent of the two (Setsuna and Exia) being on a break.

So technically, it is possible that one or more Ground Gundams could have ended up in the hands of my fanfic group the Lonely Star Team. In this vague story I've concocted, a group of "rowdy Texans" from what's left of an El Paso military base manage to steal a Zeon Z'gok, and use it to liberate the port of Galveston, helping give a the Federation a foothold back into North America. Federation command reluctantly gave them a few more mobile suits, some GMs and an aging Gun Cannon. But I've always pictured them some how getting more, like a Ground Gundam.

As much as I'd like to see where the remaining three could have went, it's probably on the Kojima battalion though not in the way you'd expect. Since the Ground Gundams were made of spare parts from project v, replacement parts were limited so it is very likely that all three were scrapped for first-come-first-serve repairs on the Kojima battalion. (The Lost war chronicles weren't able to get replacement repair parts for the Ground Gundam until they went to Jaburo and Karen's Gundam ground type was outfitted with a GM head at the end of 08th MS team.)

Probably cobbled together with a GM ground type and/or wreckage from other Gundams. Looks like they had the ability to fabricate a lot of the parts with just the pure amount of custom work evident in it. It even has salvaged Zaku 2 shoulder plates for the chest armor and non Luna Titanium on the extra head armor due to shortages.

Pixie Gundam would be interesting as well. There were only 3 made, but it's a mystery whether the fans only saw 2 out of the 3, or all three. The cause of this mystery is Missing Link, where the Pixie Gundam used by the Slave Wraith team was illegally obtained. No one knows if it's the 3rd unit, or the one used by Bork Cry in Cross Dimensions that got repaired. Like to hear your thoughts on it.

Something that always bothered me. In CCA since Char was fully taking on his duties as Zeon Deikun's son, why didn't he finally take on his real name Casval Deikun? And since he decided to continue as Char Aznable, why didn't he wear a mask and keep the Char persona?

    • @TheHiddenBoss
      @TheHiddenBoss 4 года назад

Maybe to the people of Zeon, maybe more towards the soldiers who fight alongside him (except Gyunei that teamkilling jackass), the name of the Red Comet has more weight to it than Casval. He may be the leader of Neo Zeon but he’s still a pilot till the bitter end. Plus, I imagine that hearing Char’s name in the news is more than enough to get Amuro’s attention since they still have a score to settle as rivals. As for the mask, people have already seen his face and metaphorically, he’s already wearing the mask of a political leader; a role he’d probably be stuck playing for the rest of his life if he’d won the war. Only person who truly sees him as who he really is is again, Amuro.
So I guess it all comes down to putting his name and face out just to get Amuro to come out and fight him with everything on the line. He can have the leadership of Neo Zeon, he can have the love and respect of the colonies, he can have the whole world free of humanity, all he wants is to settle things like men while they’re still at their peak. Sounds ill-advised and selfish but that’s anime rivalries for you.

Enough that it was practically their only choice of MS for years until they finally switched the the Jegan. Enough that loads of upgrade plans and attempts to replace the GM with a far superior model have been scrapped including modular MS that can equip different armor and equipment to suit the needs on the battlefield and preferences of the pilots. Enough to make you realize that if the Gundam is based on a samurai, then the GMs are the expendable foot soldiers who die setting off enemy traps and gambits so the real forces can move in.
The list just keeps going and I’m sure one of the items on that list is a Jojo reference involving bread.

It just occurred to me that throughout the UC with mobile suit battles on Earth all across the globe, Japan is never caught up in any of the battles; at least as far as I’m aware. Is there any particular in-universe reason for that? There’s no resources or base there? Did a colony drop erase it from the map?
Maybe a taboo that states that if any mobile suit dares sets one foot on there, they’ll incur the wrath of every kaiju, super robot, tokusatsu hero, magica girl, and isekai delivery truck (and one tractor) on there?

Because the two models shared so much in common, I think it's probably acceptable to go with that the 4th and 5th team had to pull from replacement parts for the Gundams at some point. Resupply for the GM's may have come later, which is why early on some GM's got upgraded to Gundams, but later on we saw the sudden shortage of replacement parts brought on by this resulting in things like Karen's GM Head, and the Ez-8.
Unless my timelines are off, at which point we could say that the 4th team had to downgrade to GM's at some point. There's probably a good manga waiting to be written to explain the story of the 4th team and their mysterious use of both GM's and Ground Gundams... but more than likely we're going to just see this get retconned with their suits being altered in future rereleases of the game, as Sunrise likes to streamline things and rename stuff and whatnot.
