The Guntank is one of my favorite mobile suit designs from the original show, because it SCREAMS 'designed by committee' in a really realistic way. If you tried to pitch a mobile suit to a real-world military equipment manufacturer (and, you know, mobile suits actually looked like they cluld be the future), the Guntank is exactly what you'd get at the end after months of cost-cutting and consultation with military leaders who don't understand.
Look man the whole legs thing wasn't going to work until they got the Compact Fusion Reactor from Minovsky, this is about the best they could do with 'normal' shit as of 77-(early) 79
Let's be real these things should show up in coneofarc cursed by design or spookton everything wrong with series like the Holo scorpion tank also if Mecha where real they'll have multi crew because operating a large machine like that will put a lot of stress on one person it done before in tanks and it always the same you can but you stress out the person too much in a macha you gonna need commander, driver, and gunner
@@USSAnimeNCC- this is not true, there are tanks that can be operated by one or two people. Also if something like this were created it would probably have a very high level of automation.

Things like the gun loader, sure, but things like the driver, commander or gunner still require human input, not to mention auxiliary roles like radio operator. Sure, you can have multiple roles operated by one person, like how the Renault FT17 only had 2 operators, a driver and commander who also acted as a gunner and loader, but doing so lowers performance by a lot as the person now has to perform multiple roles at once, splitting their attention.
No bipedal walker is the future because simple geometry and stability says that 3 or 4 different points to stand on make for a much more stable weapon's platform. Recoil, ever heard of it?

The Loto is honestly one of my favorite designs to come out of Unicorn. Also I feel the Guntank 2 get a lot of flak but you need to remember that it was a late OYW unit that continued to see action for 17 years after its introduction, so it must have been a great Artillery/ Support unit that just got the Leo treatment whenever the cameras were on it.

You know, some magnetic treads and grapple anchors could have made it a nasty asteroid and Colony defender. Like when Anakin had a bunch of AT-TE's in an asteroid field shooting a warship from behind.
Caliber is the diameter of the projectile. A large difference in power can be achieved through larger projectile length and superior materials for the shell itself and the propellant. If it is a chemical-effect (high-explosive, shaped charge, thermobaric or incendiary), it will result in stronger explosions, while kinetic energy projectiles will have greater mass and velocity, thus greater kinetic energy. The Guntank's cannons appear to be actually somewhere around 150-200 mm compared to Zaku's 100mm cannon.
What bothered me is how they sometimes act like WWI tank when they can move faster let's me guest the plot demand it and how the first one was able to reload their no room behind the gun for a breach or a loading mechanism oh well it fiction

The arms of the Guntank should've been able to move so it could target on either side to compensate for the non-rotating body; it could've helped the development team save SOME face upon presentation time.
The guntank II is an excellent unit in Gihren's greed, with the odd quirk that its classified as a vehicle and not a mobile suit (unlike all the other guntank models), which allows it to be piloted by admirals and ship captains, who are otherwise incapable of being assigned to mobile suits. In case of the Federation, this is particularly handy due to the large amount of admirals&captains the Feds start with, and since spaceships are expensive, they might end up sitting on the reserve bench otherwise. I'm sure the admirals are thrilled at the prospect of doing frontline grunt work.

The Guntank wasn't so much an "operational mobile suit" as a testbed for the arm controls they wanted to use in the actual mobile suits as well as the powerplant and anti-MS armaments.
Guntank II, Guntank Local Control and lots of other obscure MSV suits. After all, RX-78-2 and Unicorn can wait a year or two without another thousand repaints/redesigns.
I remember seeing an unnamed variant of the Guntank in a manga of the original series. It showed up in a single panel during an attack on a federation base. It was shown from a three quarters rear view and I only say it was a variant was because instead of the usual arms it what appeared to be a pair of twin massive cannons (possibly autocannons) in their place one barrel over the other but looked like a standard RX-75 in all other respects. It was operating in an AA role blasting at the Zeon Gaws. Wish I could be more helpful.

From an artillery standpoint I think the guntank did its job far better than any cannon suits like the zaku cannon, guncannon and gm cannons. Should keep these updated for artillery support and defensive positions. Well past the one year war.

It's not just tall, but probably also stupidly top-heavy. One shot from its cannons and it should flip over. The Ground Assault Type doesn't quite have the same problem though, as its bottom "tank" section is larger, and likely thus heavier, than the top "torso" section.

This past month, I created two of these tank tread gunplay kits. The Revive Guntank (with detailed painting in the cockpit), and the Lotos which are such a fun twin pack.
Guntank was one of my favorite mobile suits in Federation vs Zeon for the PS2. Low cost, high damage output, and it really chunked the Big Zam's health.

I remember a line in Journey to Jaburo, during the Belfast level, that indicates that the Guntank needed two pilots to operate effectively until it was upgraded.
You forgot the thunderbolt version of the RX-72 guntank which had an head cockpit big enough for a commander and gunner and also functioned as a transport since it's lower half was large enough to house and carry infantry unit
Huh. Berge, cranes... Kinda like an NM130 bergepanser? For reference, back in the 60s the Norwegian military decided that the M24 Chaffee tanks they had received from the US after WW2 were starting to become underpowered, so they decided to upgrade the M24. This resulted in the NM116 light tank recognizable by its 90mm gun, laser rangefinder and smoke dispensers, and more relevant the NM130 Bergepanser, which gets its name from what it's built to do, tow and rescue stranded vehicles in rough terrain.
And then we have the ones in Thunderbolt that were used smartly in that AU Battle of A Bao Que to be dropped into the fortress to defend invading EF soldiers And the one used as a stationary turret to assist the GMs defending the Spartan ship against the attacking SSA forces One of my favorite scenes in season 2 is that unfortunate mook getting sniped by the Guntank as he tries to fly around to a better vantage point, only for the land bay doors to open to a pair a freakin giant cannons pointing right at his face
In my school vr game the guntank had been used on the orca a federation research facility for defence and it got tipped onto it back by ever the galactic federation project golem mech or apexa anyway in the mission called a thunderous cataclysm the guntanks where defending the orca to let the scientist from the ather paradise to conduct experimental research on there newly captured ultra beast kaijun grim claxasaur hybrid goalius
Its such a shame that the Ground Assault Type Guntanks don't see further development as that thing is a beast. It also have my favorite "head" design for a Guntank, being a simple camera rather than more exposed glass paneled cockpit on other Guntanks.
I think it could be nice to see more "proper" Guntanks for ground combat, possibly even dedicated mobile surface to orbit platforms. Things that are tracked by default, not as an alt mode for bipedals.

In "Advent of the Red Comet", the Char Aznable Origin series, the Guntanku already existed when He was a fucking Child. Good ol' Spongy Timeline.

I remember that White Base used the Guntank as a turret during one of their major space battles. Think it was at Solomon.
It always bothered me that the Guntanks' main weapon was the same caliber as the Zaku machine gun. The difference in firepower seems staggering.

They probably fire longer rounds than the Zaku’s guns, or low pressure rounds with more explosive filler.

Origin and Thunderbolt are separate continuities from the regular Universal Century stuff.
The UC timeline is so developed it has alternate universe with the same stuff, only with diffrent development histories of the machines.

You forgot the thunderbolt version of the RX-72 guntank which had an head cockpit big enough for a commander and gunner and also functioned as a transport since it's lower half was large enough to house and carry infantry unit

For reference, back in the 60s the Norwegian military decided that the M24 Chaffee tanks they had received from the US after WW2 were starting to become underpowered, so they decided to upgrade the M24. This resulted in the NM116 light tank recognizable by its 90mm gun, laser rangefinder and smoke dispensers, and more relevant the NM130 Bergepanser, which gets its name from what it's built to do, tow and rescue stranded vehicles in rough terrain.

I think the other problem with the later guntank versions is that the federation just decided to send artillery units to the front lines
Its such a shame that the Ground Assault Type Guntanks don't see further development as that thing is a beast. It also have my favorite "head" design for a Guntank, being a simple camera rather than more exposed glass paneled cockpit on other Guntanks.
I think it could be nice to see more "proper" Guntanks for ground combat, possibly even dedicated mobile surface to orbit platforms. Things that are tracked by default, not as an alt mode for bipedals.
