I had a total hysterectomy in May of 2022. I went in preparing for a vaginal removal. Came out of surgery and found out they had to cut me open. I had never had children so my cervix had never been dilated. Initially, the doctor believed my fibroid was about 10cm. It ended up being 12cm and would not fit coming out. I kind of had a feeling that was going to happen. My healing process sucked. I was in the hospital overnight and went home the next day. Looking back, I should have stayed another night. It was a two hour drive from the hospital to my home. I struggled the first week I was home. I ended up going commando because I couldn’t wear anything with my incision where it was. I’m so thankful my husband had a walker for me to use. I’m glad I did it. My period pain was way worse than the surgery. I feel way better now that it’s been a year and a half since my surgery. Best thing I ever did.
I told my sister and mother that the next time they go to the grocery store to pick up a grapefruit and imagine toting that in your uterus. They did and were like “Holy shit…no wonder why she was in pain all the time!”
    Thank God you are cancer-free!

I am glad you were feeling better in this video. We definitely are all different. I got out of surgery and No pain! My biggest discomfort was feeling gassy and bloated! I had to push myself to rest and relax. I was up and going with no medication after the third day. I read and see all these videos of different experience woman have gone through and feel truly blessed for my recovery.
Sending positive vibes to all woman❤

Things I Wish I Knew Before My Hysterectomy: that my ovaries were going to die after 5 years post-op anyway, which caused me premature menopause (feels like cr@p tbh) and that I was going to get osteoporosis and other terrible symptoms as a result of that.

Sorry to hear that this was a struggle for you. On the positive side for those who are reading this, I had a hysterectomy 3 months ago and was surprised at how good I felt. I was back to work after 2 weeks, and I would say I felt pretty good after just one week. That said, I felt so good after the first week that I was surprised I wasn't completely healed by the 6-week mark. I wasn't, and I am still not 100% the same, but as she said, everyone is different.

I asked questions and was still not made aware of a lot. My doc only told me where he would likely cut and told me I'd be able to climb 3 flights of stairs at my sister's apartment complex when I said I'd wait til after I moved to get it done- glad I listened to myself cuz that was a wildly unrealistic claim. I didn't go thru all this (9 days into recovery so far), but I was definitely not well informed outside of my own PERSONAL research. I expected a lot, but I'm very unhappy with how much I'm finding out post-op. If you are preparing for a hysterectomy go into medical researcher mode and look up as many videos and online articles as you can for what to do both well before, the day of, and after the surgery. If you are against blood transfusions, get that in order well before the surgery (request a S-407 from your HLC rep or the secretary beforehand) and be aware albumin is used in certain applications of bloodless treatments so do your research. An invaluable tip was to keep a small pillow both at home (coughing, sneezing, comfort) and in the car to hold on your midsection on the day of your surgery (between your seat belt and your incisions) but I'd add to that to keep it in there for whenever you're a passenger in it afterwards. I was driven somewhere yday and the roads were super rough- mind you I have a bellybutton incision which is, to me, the worst place to have to heal... I regretted forgetting my pillow - it helps to brace for things like that.

I live alone and it's been very difficult. I had a total vaginal hysterectomy robotically assisted on June 12th of this year. I was fine for 9 days. The hydrocodene pills helped well with the pain but I developed some kind of UTI infection. My
vaginal area became so itchy and swollen. Nothing normally used for a UTI worked. I called my surgeon and her nurse told me to go to ER for a urine test. (unreal!!) Eventually, it normalized. However, on the 19 th day, the pain became unbearable mostly when I had to have bowel movement. I assumed it was because I was becoming so constipated. My surgeon said it was probably due to the Hydrocodone medication. She was right but I had to then choose between the pain from the hysterectomy or the pain from being constipated.
The bottom line is this, it's now 5 1/2 weeks post surgery and I am really disgusted with the postoperative advice that I got. I know everybody is different because the different types of surgery they get or how much was actually removed but there has to be some basic advice which I was not given. Three of my friends who had a hysterectomy similar to mine told me that after 4 weeks they were fine. They went back to their normal way of life except they were careful wait they lifted. I actually had a couple of people tell me that I exaggerating my pain and exhaustion. next week is my final post-operative appointment so I hope everything's fine and I can start building up my pelvic floor so I don't have any prolapses. 😢

Please do your research and explore other options if you can. I just had a Sonata for fibroids. Before having my children, I had a laparoscopic myomectomy for huge fibroids outside the uterus. Four years later at age 25, I had another laparoscopy for endometriosis. I had four babies with no fertility treatments. I am now experiencing perimenopausal symptoms at 43. I opted to have a Sonata to treat uterine fibroids. I'm one mth post op, and my cycle is already improving (less bleeding). Everyonr does not respond the same way to a hysterectomy. I fought before kids and aftet to keep my uterus. Do your research... All the best.

They should have given you the option of an epidural that is left in for a few days after surgery. You don’t need as much pain medication that way because it goes right to the area. They back it down after the surgery so you can walk with it in. I had 5 abdominal surgeries and 4 of them I had the epidural it was so much better that way.

Ask your doc about laparoscopic myomectomy for fibroids. They can also clean up your endometriosis and remove the cysts at the same time. The Sonata does not involve incisions, but it only addresses fibroids.
