i am the 37th. i am that person less the budget. and i am watching this because YOU made the video. great video as always. LOVE the slice-of-pie example. :)
Dang! To borrow from Slip Mahoney, "I resemble that remark!" I knew this was coming, of course, but had no idea when, and now I anticipate an entire weekend of hovering over the return key while staring at the B&H shopping cart. Thanks a lot Matt!
I was one of the 36 for the current M246 Monochrom, absolutely love it ! However, I'll be skipping the 40MP as I currently do everything possible to keep as much of a BW film look as possible (older glass, etc). 40MP, though amazing tech, just not my cup of tea right now.
I use a film leica M. I love the whole film and mechanical experience. It is the best for me.
One of the 36 LoL
my Leica is MonoChrome when I put Tri-X in it and color when it's filled with Ektar ;-) but those are great images out of the M10
Trust me if you have never shot a monochrome try it & thank me later!
Send me $20k & I’ll try it.
@Wet Dog Dry Fly Photography that´s one the best comments on a Leica M I`ve seen so far
@@terrycullinane9437 I didn't have a spare 20k & i have shot the M10 & older monochrome my local city store stocks them if your a vip you can even leave the store to shoot them :)
My Nikon F2 is MonoChrome when I load it with Tri-X.
I have an older Olympus P5 that when I shoot street sometimes I shoot RAW and JPG where the EVF and JPG is monochrome and square. I love that experience.
You are so lucky to have Steph as a friend/model. She is so beautiful and also such a nice personality..... makes my heart melt. Lucky you Mat
Indeed beauty, posture, personality - she's radiating!
Cringe
lucky? it is by design, one has to realise. she is cute 'n all, but in the end she is there to haul you in.
deliverstringbeans yes I know the marketing “ploy” but what a way to be pulled in !
AND Body guard...... looks like they stayed WELL below 125th st.. That was a lotta Moolah in Kit they were wearing around.. Not to mention the video kit.
35mm F2. Summicron is my sweetspot. I used one on my Z7 with a Novoflex adaptor.
Would love one. Had the M9M and it was splendid. Thanks for a great video!
Steph makes me smile! Also, the optics are utterly unmatched.
Process, feel, the total experience. Priceless
The new Monochrome with the 50 APO would be my dream combo.
Great choice
Seconded, that would be my combo as well.
Thanks Matt. Always enjoy your videos!
Matt and Steph, you guys are the best! I love your videos. Great quality and highly entertaining.
Hi Matt John Ishii here, from KL. Going to KL Leica store tomorrow to the launch of the M10 mono. I pre ordered mine last week. So looks like I'm one of the users on your thin RED line .
I’m from Malaysia too and I justify the price and cut into the red line but my pocket is not there yet! 😅
But I prefer M10P or the upcoming higher res M10R!
Love your opening target market pie chart discussion. Nailed it! I'm a Leica user but fell off on your last cut filtering out color shooters.
I love black & white photography. There is something about the contrast that is amazing. I am not a photographer but thinking of getting into it as I have done some dive photpgraphy & it was great fun.
Did a tiny bit at uni for horticulture.
I am one of the 36 - but I always use mine with filtration for much better results - its all about balance - the best and most useful is orange - but red is needed for higher contrast - I also use Elinchrom ELB1200 on location for fashion - its the dogs wotsits - for colour and general work I have a GFX - but cool video and thanks for sharing your experiences with us. EDIT - I used to use Agfa Scala back in the day and the Leica Mono's are a real ode to this wonderful long forgotten film.
It's cool and not at all surprising that Steph enjoyed trying out the Leicas. I could easily envision her getting into artistic black and white photography with the M system.
Another enjoyable and informative video from you and Steph. I have to admit though, I started photography 47 years ago on an SLR that didn't even have light metering but I'm one of those give me the latest tech types. I love my Sony. 🙂
I love my m10. I love color every now and then . Cool review !
I know there expensive but the photographers who know what they are will love them and if they have the money will just get so much pleasure out of just using them. I only have an X1D it give my so much pleasure shooting what I do I do not care if it is not the fastest camera out there it's the experience of using one to the best of my abilities that should make you happy. Thank Matt for some great videos.
The original CCD with the noise is quite pleasing to look at tho, prefer that over the new camera.. I will stay with my HP5 and trix lol
Stephs analogy about sharpening your knifes was perfectly on point!
I still like my old ME (M9) with zeiss glass quite a bit, it's my go to travel set. 18mp seems ample for most uses. But IF I had the budget and the time to appreciate it, the M10 monochrom would be amazing. With a 35 summicron. I don't like the idea of putting a digital viewfinder on an M to be able to focus long lenses. Fot this I stick to the 7RIII.
I like how childishly excited you both got shooting these cameras in this video... you really are a young soul for a 50 year old man...
I just sold my Nikon kit to buy the M-10 Monochrom and 50mm… thanks for this video. I appreciate you, your work and your model.
8:11 - nailed it!!
love the m10 monochrom i even have a black and white tv
Don't normally watch gear review videos but enjoyed how you put this together. I like shooting monochrome but price is a little out of my camera budget. Thanks for sharing.
love the red shoes matt!
I really enjoyed the video format :))
I'm really curious how the files would turn up if you were to replace the low pass filter with a 590nm or 720nm infrared filter. That would be one helluva camera.
...much love from Nashville, TN...shout out to the bts camera op! some great and interesting candid and creative shots!
Thanks for the hands on look man!
Merry birthday Steph!
Hi Matt!
Thanks for the Video. A 40Mpx Monochrom with the 90 mm Lux is the ideal combo for using the beautiful Leica Table-tripod with the Leica Ball head. Before the advent of Image-stabilisation, Leica has always promoted this little stable genius for helping to stabilise your camera, when you are shooting free hand.
You simply press the tripod against your chest, or the right shoulder and you can position the camera before your eye. It works like a Shoulder Mount Rig (for instance the "Revo Video Shoulder Support" or the "CAMVATE DSLR Shoulder Mount Rig Dual Handgrip Support Kit") but is much smaler and helps immensly to stabilise the image.
Greetings Andreas
That camera and lens would put my bank account in the red! If someone would make a quality rangefinder film camera without breaking the bank I would buy it. The tax on the Leica would be more than a Fujifilm x100V.
Cheaper version: New Leica MP with black and white film. That is the goal this year for me. Matt, you should shoot some video for it and tell us how it is, the previous version had gorgeous images on video.
Even though I'm a Fuji-film XT-2 shooter, I can appreciate the love for a Leica. Damn, it's expensive.
Not for me but I’m now inspired to hit the streets in full manual mode, no autofocus, and see what I can capture.
Brad Norling
You may already know this, but if you have AF lenses in manual mode you might find that they’re harder to nail focus than in a lens designed for manual focus, with a long throw.
Thats good to hear... i do this often too! spread the word..
Sounds like the same enjoyment I get when I go out with my Nikon F3, or even my K1000: it's all about the process.
..Joe
Matt great coverage as usual. I wonder if in September we come over there from Italy there would be the opportunity to meet somewhere
What's worth well more than that Leica camera is Stephanie's smile and radiating personality. Oh I forgot and her beauty :-)
Slightly new format/style is nice.
Great review, as usual! Was there any lag making multiple shots while using the visoflex or rear evf rather than the eye piece. I understand that was an issue with the typ 246 versions. Just curious since I'm not one of the 36 and will never own this beauty!
I just bought a 2011 Leica V-lux 30 for $120 usd, I’m rocking now at 14.1 megs🤜🏻🤛🏼
I`m still rocking with my Nikon D700 (12 megs) since 2008 and I`m happy, you don`t need more megs to rock :-)
Very nice Matt.
I have an old 55/2.8 micro for my Nikon. Yes there's certainly something about the process of shooting in manual that is much more satisfying, at least when you're doing it for fun.
Would love a DF and bunch of manual lenses but $$$ I'd prefer to put toward a newer more versitile kit.
Great video, thanks ! One question, so I am using m10-p and I seem to take more b&w pics than color pics. However, from my own experience, b&w on my camera is already good. If I never need to print big pics, do you still think it is worth the swap ? Thanks in advance
NICE! 50 APO and the M10 Mono (or M10-P with DNG and B&W jpegs) would be my choice.
LOL @ Steph holding the camera with the Visoflex away from her eye like it's a rifle scope. She's so cute!
Love the into Matt!! And don't forget us IT Directors...
avi krivorot speak for yourself! I have to go Fuji.
@@jcnash02 I'm speaking for myself and the other 1% that make up that red line. I have to go Leica!!!
Great video!
Ah, I see an embargo has been lifted... suddenly a bunch of M10 videos, all from 15 minutes ago. Leica full Sony-style! But of course I'll watch yours first. :)
It’s the very definition of “Niche”.
50mm APO any day 😉 Weight, size and picture quality is stunning. I tried the 75mm f/1.25 before and without evf that one is absolutely unusable when shot wide open. Don't even want to know what a beast the 90mm is. Not even mentioning the weight you mentioned 🙈
Great video Matt , shooting a summilux 90 open you don’t need to be in Manhattan , can be anywhere 😂
Sir , Does the shutter ( Leica M10 Monochrome) remain closed as the previous versions of Leica ? Nice video & Thanks :)
I can understand the appeal of the system and the process. Shooting without all the features and gadgets is a totally different experience. That's part of the reason when I upgraded to full frame I went with the D700. I have to admit that another factor was certainly the price. 🙄 But I did also want to learn more and knew I would learn less if the camera was doing it all for me.
Now if only the money gods would see fit to dump some Leica money in my lap. *hint hint, money gods.
Also, I really enjoyed the video. 🙂🦆
I am very close to pulling the trigger on one. I just picked up a used M10 a month ago and am thinking the money I'm saving not travelling due to COVID and the fact that I probably won't be going anywhere for at least another year might just cover the cost.
I’m close to that wedge. If only I had the money!
I'm hoping to see someone use this for landscape photography and post links to full-resolution files.
The old Monochrom was a dream camera for me, give me one and a 50mm and I would be very very happy man!
what kind of mics are you recording with ???. the sound is very good
Stephanie is lovely in color but in this B+W her face is truly exceptional. Just something about the rendering and her face together...
Very good demonstration. Just a slight correction, all sensors are manufactured ' monochrome' , the Bayer sensor array and the associated microlensing is then stuck on the sensor at a later stage of manufacturing. It is notoriously difficult to DeBayer a digital camera particularly if a Sony sensor has been used.
Hi Matt I went to the Leica M10 mono launch and tried it with a new Leica 90mm 1.5 Lux. I went home and looked at the files and found it no big deal. I already have M10 and 2 Leica SL's. But I can't justify the $9600 price which is the price in Malaysia. So I cancelled the order and got a SL2 instead.
Cool hat mate😆 , and Stef gorgeous as always 😉.
There's something very impressive in your trousers.
I guess we all know what it is, but we're too polite to say it and some of us are personally affected ;-)
I think using heavy lenses makes a difference. I like the lighter smaller lenses. 35 Cron is perfect.
I wish that Leica bring back a ccd sensor. Still love the output of an m9.
If you want a CMOS you buy a Sony. Leica is unique with CCD.
El Guapo I think ccd nowadays would be to expensive. It looks like every manufacturer use Sony sensors. But in my opinion and experience, ccd is still an unique sensor.
@@berndtwiest4571 Absolutley! its as close as you can get to film. The likes of M8 & M9 would be super rare in the near future. Must get one :)
Still happy with my monochrom M9. :)
Me too!
If I had the cash, I would definitely pick one up. Any of them!
Matt, you look genuinely excited. You aren't good at faking excitement so when we see that face it becomes really really obvious. Go buy that 8K B&W Leica! :)
Can I use this camere to record videos?
Am the 50mm guy. Either Summilux or Summicron. Have other focal lengths bus somehow I pick up these lenses much more compared to 90, 35 or 28s. I love the monochrome rendering
4:04 "From what I can see, the files look gorgeous.."
I would be one of the 36 if I had the coin. The brand new 2k Sony “will not” give you the same results, you know this of course. There will not be the innertonal details of the monochrome image .
Think I’ll shoot more with my Texas Leica , Fujifilm 6x9 film camera . It has the right 90mil f/3.5 on it so a 40mm ish focal lenght .
I am a Leica shooter, I've got an M7 and an M10, and 3 lenses, a 28mm, 50mm (yes that one), and a 90mm. I am however neither a doctor, nor a lawyer. No, I work in I.T. Security. I would love to buy one of these cameras, but I doubt it's in the budget this year. Maybe if I can find one Code U (floor model), which is how I found my M10. I personally enjoy shooting with it, but I understand why people don't. I would probably go for the newer model M10M, and the 90 1.5. Though what I want more than both of them is the Leica Thambar.
Set your m10 p to monochrome mode , I would like to see a comparison, or a fujifilm with across simulation
Not being a doctor or lawyer, I will be looking at buying this used in about 20 years time.
On the bonus side; I'm a photographer, so I'm actually gonna use it!
The Don DeLuxe wish u stay healthy and long live to 20 yrs and more from now sir
@@hirumieru1 Thank you :-)
Matt, I wonder if the new sensor really follows the idea of being able to use any M (or adapted) lens. Of course using the 50 APO makes the files pop, but what about a Summicron from like 1964? Do you think you have to have modern lenses to work with the new sensor?
Can you elaborate? Not really clear - what would you expect to be different? Any chromatic aberration, warping, vignetting, or colour-cast on older lenses will be reproduced faithfully (inasmuch as a Monochrome sensor can). The increase in megapixel count doesn't necessarily mean the sensor area has changed size.
A regular m10 with summilux 50mm f1.4 asph is good enough for me :)
I'd love to have the Leica M10 Monochrom, but it is out of my budget. I will continue using my Leica M3, with 50mm f/2 Summicron-M Titanium 6-bit, 50mm f/2.8 collapsible Elmar and 9cm f/4 Elmar lenses.
Edit:Typo
Hello Matt where is it possible to buy the strap she is wearing on the leica?
Can you use colour filters to change the tonal response as you can with panchromatic film?
Yes you can.
Good stuff, thx, Adam, Tofino.CA
id go for the ccd monochrome with a 50mm apo a wow combo just the 50mm apo on my m8 would awsome
Still too big a slice in my opinion 😅 but I can't help it, I'm just crazy about the M Monochrom. The older and 'cheaper' version, that is. Thanks for your review though, this new one looks so exciting!
very nice video, i like the M10 Monochrom, with my M9 and M 240, i take lot of monochrome pics also, but i think the M10M is much better ... if my budget would be little bit higher, i would buy one i think ... just because its ab amazing experience, but first i will buy a Summilux 50mm ASPH and a nice old M6 :)
.. ahh and i think if i would carry it on the street, my favourite combo would be with a Summichron 28mm or a Summilux 50mm ASPH ...
where can I get that hat?
It took you three attemps to say "filter" in the right moment :-DD Like your videos very much! Greetings..
Hey Matt
You say that not many photographers can afford to buy this expensive camera except dentists.. BUT.. Many amateurs can afford a top model Nikon, canon or sony with 24-70, 70-200 and even more gear... So that's not true. I believe that if you really want something then you will get it. Anyway.. I shoot Sony, Hasselblad and analog Leica. So if I want monochrome, I shoot it on real film instead. Im sure that the M10 mono is a nice camera.. but we all know that digital cameras are replaced after a few years and the depreciated value is BIG. For me a Leica is for life and that's why I used the money on a new Leica MP a couple years ago. But that's also the most beautiful Leica ever build if you ask me. Thanks for sharing ;)
Ultimate paring hmm M10 with a 50mm Cron APO
That intro :D :D :D :D
Love the opening lol. These images are very soft at 100% crop. $21k for photos I can take on my iPhone 11 Pro? If I paid $7500 for that camera, an absurd $13k for that lens and still got images that crap at 100%, id throw myself off a bridge. Glad you can do these experiments for us so we don't waste $21k for photos this bad. This makes medium format look like a bargain!
On the camera what is the 90mm lens equal to compared to a full frame DSLR ?
Same. It’s full frame
Despite the new 40mp model, I personally prefer the CCD one, especially when coupling with my antique Dallmeyer Super six lens and the Kershaw Peregrine III lens
Zheng Ricky congratulations on having money. Thanks for sharing
@@bodythetan You could afford those as long as you work hard
Daryl the Dentist here and Leica M film shooter.
This camera stays on the shelf for one reason only: price.
So perhaps the market gets reduced from 36 people to 35.
Ha! 😂
Could I ever put that camera to use however! The tonality......!
Probably go with the 90mm...NYC,where we always have something to shoot...
We can alway dream of one of these😔
Love the pie chart 😂
I'd love to own a Leica one day, not monochrome. I really enjoyed this episode thank you.
