The difference is way smaller than I expected, issue is that in many countries you have to get an ssd upgrade also with more cores so its more like a $500 upgrade
For this to be a real test of the M4 and not just a test of the RAM, you should have done an M3 with 16gb. Lots of other tests out there showing that 8gb slows down even synthetic CPU and GPU tests, and much more with "real world" situations like video exports from FCP or Premiere.
Whilst I completely agree with you, I still think that a comparison of BASE models is still valid as they are a price to price comparison. Still would be good to see a 16gb version in there too.
I believe it's because the M4 completes test early and sits idle waiting for M3 to complete the test. M4 might draw more power during the test, but it sits completely idle later on, so that might be it.

The GPU max frequency went up just like the CPU max did. That's where the GPU perf bump comes from. And, that's why they use more power: P = CV^2f (Power equals capcitance times voltage-squared times frequency. Capacitance is determined by the process technology and the design).
When the M4 pricing was announced I bought an unbinned M3 Pro with 18GB and 1TB storage from the refurbished store for $NZ320 more than the 1TB base M4 with 16GB. Unless the encoders are designed by Apple to do every single bit of encoding and computations without interaction with the regular CPU core, then it is entirely possible that the encoders on the M4 aren't faster per clock than the M3, but rather that the main CPU core is the constraining factor in doing its part of the work. The ideal encoder scenario would require only setting up hardware registers to point to an area of memory for input and output and to have it report back when it is done, but reality is a bit more involved in practice.

I feel so mixed with these results. On one hand the performance is incredible, no doubt about it that these M4's slap. The mixed feeling comes from the noise. I hate, absolutely hate fan noise. Seeing the new base M4 max out the fan, and do it so quickly is a bit disappointing. Like sure, I can have this machine do some heavy lifting, but I may not want to be in the same room while it lifts... On that same note, I feel like this will be a sign of things to come with with the M4 Pro and M4 Max MBP, and that the new MacMini may sound pretty loud under a large workload. It really makes me wonder if the M4 Max and Ultra may be the first Apple SoC's to make the Mac Studio break its silence streak. Very impressive performance, little disappointed on the fan noise.
and I want a Miata to tow a 40 foot boat @ 75 mph. =) You have options. M3 MBA, no fan less performance (you can do the thermal pad trick for better performance). MBP Pro with 2 fans, but more $$. Seems pretty simple.... just pick one. But if you are already in a position where you are gonna have a laptop do heavy lifting on the regular...
Should I buy the M4 Mac mini with the configuration of m4 pro base chip, 24gb ram, 1tb ssd? I need it for video editing for yt channel, photo editing for photography, programming python and java script apps, web browsing and media consumption. I want to upgrade from my old windows gaming pc from 2018 which has i7 8700 and gtx 1050 ti, and I’m willing to upgrade it and move to my first Mac.
This is the second time I’m having to say this. First, great video love to watch hands-on videos and not leaked rumors. Second, they don’t “push more power” to get better performance. Power is only used for stability and cooling. They most likely increased the clock speed, which requires a bigger draw on power, or improved the instruction set order. That’s probably why the single-core performance is better. Clock speed results in processing more millions of instructions per second (MIPS) or what we equate to performance. Equating electricity to performance for tech news is somewhat remedial for those that don’t understand either whereas your viewers most likely do, so it’s unnecessary.
As always, nice stats and comparisons! Since u also look at wattage, maybe additional stats like points/watt or watt/minute etc would be interesting to see, what is actually more efficient and what is „just“ on cost of battery consumption..?!

I’m thinking the same thing. I’ve heard the M3 Max might run hot and loud under load. Might be better with the M4. I’ve seen the M4 with 512 and the M3 with 1 tb ssd.
I'm just here for the speaker test
Bro just have pile of apple macbooks laying around (btw do you sell those macbooks after video??)
He returns them.
@bodigames so I can just return after review
@ yes of course. Depending on where you live you have to return it within 30 days.
They return most of the units but keep few base ones.
They all empty
Oh man, I have an M1 Max MBP with 32gb RAM and I ALMOST upgraded last year... but I chose not to. Just ordered my 16" M4 Max specd all the way up with a full 128gb RAM. This thing is gonna fly.
I have time left to return it, but I still think it was the right play. Other than a little bit of single core and maybe some encoding I will never use I don’t think I am missing much going last generation, but I gain a little multicore and a lot of graphics.
And you also got a better monitor with better refresh rates 🙂
Great video. Would be useful to see M3 Pro stats too as trying to decide whether to go M3 Pro or M4
Awesome! Great news for the entry levels, can’t wait for you to get into the Pros! Thanks for all the hard work!
Please help, which one good to buy? Macbook pro m4 base model ram 16gb, or macbook pro with chip m3 pro ram 18gb? Because the price is similar
@@user-jr7bb6g9ev thankyou for the answer, i use it for coding mobile development, still confused m4 or m3 pro
If the fans are getting maxed out in the pro, then how will they run the M4 in the macbook air?
Hotter than M3, which already has problem. They will need to add some larger heatsinks - M3 air just gets too hot too quickly compared to M1.
Same heat issue was spotted with the regular M4 Mac Mini when pushed to limits. The pro version was fine.
Should I buy M3 Pro or M4 because they both are listed at same price right now please suggest something
It depends on what you are using it for
I bought the M3 pro with 16g and 1tb on sale at Best Buy. I like sale. I haven’t opened it yet. I use it to Dj
I was going to buy the new M4 MacBook Pro but decided to just save money by getting the M4 Mac mini .
I’ve been waiting for these videos, guys. I really like how you compare things.
So is it just more wattage push or an actual upgrade?
If you just use the base m4 MacBook Pro for light tasks, writing, surfing the internet, would the fan be loud like the stress test? And would the MacBook itself last a few years?
Buy one and find out
Yes get it it will handle everything you can do times 3
When is the 16 inch MacBook pro max coming. Would love to see the internals and battery placement . We also need those CPU and GPU benchmarks
i am currently using 2017 macbook pro intel 8 GB for my day to day work and small sized excel models in parallels. Now i need to use parallels EXTENSIVELY for building predictive models in excel (large sized excel sheets) and python coding for data science models (small datasets) .Should i go for macbook pro m4 pro :
12-Core CPU
16-Core GPU
24GB Unified Memory
or
48 GB
or
14-Core CPU
20-Core GPU
24GB Unified Memory
or 48GB ???
M3 Pro or M4? I have m3 pro now but I can return. I do like the extra fan and 2 gb more of ram
Unless the encoders are designed by Apple to do every single bit of encoding and computations without interaction with the regular CPU core, then it is entirely possible that the encoders on the M4 aren't faster per clock than the M3, but rather that the main CPU core is the constraining factor in doing its part of the work. The ideal encoder scenario would require only setting up hardware registers to point to an area of memory for input and output and to have it report back when it is done, but reality is a bit more involved in practice.
awesome review!
Thanks Alex!!
lease suggest me between these 2 macbooks
M4 base macbook pro vs m3 pro with 18 gb ram 512gb storage both macbooks are of same cost in my country india
Please recommend me one
Which one do you recommend M3 Pro o M4 ?
Thanks for doing these tests!
Excellent test run, bro
Finally video I’ve been waiting for
Watching this as I unbox my base m4 mini and pro coming from m1 mini and air m2 and i think im good for next 5 years. Love this channel ❤
*You didn't show the HEVC export results. What were they?*
Thanks guys again for the detailed review!
Please do a more thorough webcam and microphone comparison in future videos!
Great video. But, FYI, the slide that you show for Geekbench multi-core mistakenly says “Single-core” in error.
Can we download the Lightroom catalogue and images so we can test it ourselves? Want to see how it fairs on my M1 MacBook Pro
Should have measured loudness, great review though.....thank you :)
Should upgrade rom my MacBook Pro m3 pro 16 inch into the m4 pro 14 inch?
Should I buy the M4 Mac mini with the configuration of m4 pro base chip, 24gb ram, 1tb ssd? I need it for video editing for yt channel, photo editing for photography, programming python and java script apps, web browsing and media consumption. I want to upgrade from my old windows gaming pc from 2018 which has i7 8700 and gtx 1050 ti, and I’m willing to upgrade it and move to my first Mac.
Math does not work. Mbp14 better deal with a screen etc and small cost increase and you get a portable machine too
i have the same pc with that graphic card so what do i need for the m4 mac mini to go better with?
You can always build a cheaper pc with the specs you want
@ or if i want to change to mac os
I would just get the base model M4 mini. You can use external SSD for app storage. I don't think you'll need more than 16gb ram for what you're doing.
This is worth the upgrade when you’re coming in from an intel based MacBook Pro or an M1 MacBook Pro
As always, nice stats and comparisons!
Since u also look at wattage, maybe additional stats like points/watt or watt/minute etc would be interesting to see, what is actually more efficient and what is „just“ on cost of battery consumption..?!
M3 Macbook Pro 14” base 8GB ram/512gb SSD config on sale on Amazon - $250 off - also $200 off on Best Buy and BHP and a few other sites. - for $1110-1150 plus tax, I’ll take it over any Macbook Air if only for the better 120Hz ProMo display and 6 speakers.
EXACTLY... I agree.
Question: can you do a video on the nano texture option on a MacBook? For some reason, that is the one thing that I keep going back on forth on when building my set up.
I need a mac Mini M4 vs M1 Mac Studio comparison. Is the Mac Mini M4 better than the M1 Mac Studio?
I have an iMac from Mid 2010 (i7 / 32 Go DDR3 / custom CG 4Go / 1To SSD )- i’m going to buy à Mac mini M4 pro ! It will be an amazing experience !
I have been holding on my MacBook Pro intel late 2013 ... I use it only for light use and it is still ok but this new MacBook Pro M4 seems great value for money and good reason to upgrade to enjoy Apple Intelligence once it's available in Europe next year.
Tim Cook really cooked something great with this generation of Macs.
Best reviewer out there
My dad wanted to try his first MacBook and save some money so I had him get a 16in m3 pro with 36GB ram for 2000. He didn’t mind being a generation behind. He got one with really nice specs on sale since the m4 is out now. Most people don’t need the m4 generation. Older chips in the entire m series line is still perfectly fine for the average person
Do comparison between 14 inch M2 Pro and M4 Pro
What is the frequency of the RAM on the MacBook Pro?
M4 MacBook Pro vs M3 Pro MacBookPro please! They are similar in price now and interesting spec comparison.
