Thanks for sharing! I want to get the 16", but after watching this video I felt a bit drawn to the 14". I currently have the 13" and just had to return my 16" M1 Max work-laptop back after using it for 3 months. Your comment helps, as I also value size, sound and the comfort of being able to sit for hours.
It would have been interesting to include the 16" M4 Max to this and see if the price jump from the 14" Pro to the 16" Max is better justified than to the 16" Pro.
The video does not really show how much better the sound of the speakers in on the 16" (you need to hear it yourself). I can do video calls with the 16" all the day without headset - but it's really no fun at all with a 14" (sound quality and fan noise - I'm running some performance hungry apps during the day)
I have an M3 Pro 16” for work. I had an M1 Max 14” and now have a M4 Pro 14”. I thought I’d like the 16” more than I do, but honestly the portability of the 14” is totally worth it.
I am just now watching this on the 14 inch M4 pro with the exact specs. It's great. I threw in some resolve projects (RAW and LUTs), big Photoshop files, an Unreal Engine 5 project (with everything set to Medium) and it managed fine. No stutter, minimal fan noise. It's not meant to replace my PC workstation but a way to be mobile and "productive"... as I am right now... watching RUclips... on a train... on a MacBook.
The size, cooler temps, and quieter operation easily justifies the extra $500 of the 16" regardless of performance so best to choose based on portability of your use case. If its just sitting on my desk 16" all day but if I have to travel, take it home every day, or want to work in a coffee shop I'll go 14".
16" M4 Max here. A remarkable machine, but a significant challenge for non-touch typists. The key gaps are now black, even on the silver model-a true nightmare for those who rely on visual aiming when typing.
If you’re a dude who is getting a Mac and will also want to use it for gaming a 16” may be a better option. I’ve heard the 14” gets heat throttled with high intensive longer tasks and can bottleneck performance. All the big promoted RUclipsrs only report on video rendering and running quick benchmarks
@ for some users specifically who need a Mac for school or work and also wish to be able to also use it for gaming. If gaming is a primary concern there are much better options of course
Without an external screen at home, and if you use your laptop at work as many do, I prefer the 16 inch. I have a 16 inch M1 Pro and I'm glad I got the larger size. Now, with the M4 Pro, and a nano-textured display, the 16 inch is making me very tempted!
Yeah the 16” is huge, i mean that thing isn’t really meant to be carried around. I’d also be worried about damaging it, i had my mac air screen break on me and it’s a pain to get fixed
I carry around the 16” all the time. With the right backpack I find the 16” much more portable than the 13” MacBook Air because when I take the 16” I can actually complete my work with the larger screen whereas with the 13” Air the small screen size means so much more switching context and back and forth so I get less done. It feels weird to say that the 16 MBP is more portable than the 13 MBA but in realworld use I carry my 16 everywhere and the 13 stays at home so it can be plugged into external screens. Wish my work would allow me to use my 16 instead of their 13 MBA.
@@richardmoore5371I have both a 16” MBP M1 Pro and a 13” MB Air M2. Picked up the later for travel…especially when I also bring a work machine…Lenovo 16” with me. Can travel with the 16” for sure…but dropping the weight is not to be negated.
@@seriessplayer62747 That is a big reason why I have doubts about an expensive Mac where the screen can crack way easier than a plastic Windows laptop screen.
Ergonomics for the 16 inch suffer compared to the 14 inch version when used on a desk as the keyboard is further from the front edge of the notebook. However, that defeciency can largely be corrected by angling the computer by 10-15 degrees with an appropriate wedge product.
There might be a bigger difference between M4 Max 14 and 16 under extensive use since the M4 Pro chips are less powerfull and quite efficient in both chassis.
@@ADHDOCDbinned version has 2 less performance cores in comparison to unbinned version. Actually these 2 cores are physically present on the chip, but they have been disabled as some of them can be defective (during manufacturing process). I would love to see a video of the M4 Pro Unbinned in the 14" vs the 16". Basically keep everything else the same, just show us how much impact the different sizes truly has.
I doubt there would be any difference’s worthy of the time to test. The binned and un binned is disappointing as it is, not worth it for the 200.00 either way.
The video really doesn't make sense for comparison If the chip isn't the same you're not differentiating the 14 & 16 you're just comparing 2 computers based on price The 14 & 16 need to have the same configuration to make a comparison
People are not buying the 16” m4 pro base model for more performance vs a 14” m4 pro base model. They want the 16” for the bigger beautiful screen to get work done and the superior speakers. I exchanged the 14” for the 16” and while 14” felt very well balanced and portable I just wanted a bigger screen for coding. I couldn’t do more than 30 min coding sessions on the tiny 14” screen when I want to be away from the desk. The 16” I can take it anywhere and work for hours on it and tbh it’s not that much heavier as the 14” is still a chunky laptop.
I feel like so many people didn’t even really pay attention to this review …. He is stating that the base 14 inch m4 pro in the standard configuration is a MUCH better buy and it is not worth upgrading the cores !

Yeh, saw it straight away in the back left of the 14". I've had no dents in my M1 MBP but certainly got a ding in my final Intel MBP when I had to put my personal bag into the cargo compartment on a small plane. Thought the M-chip cases were a bit more resilient.
Can you do a review of real world performance of m4pro 24gb vs 48gb?! Feels like historically a lot of the pro and max reviews were of higher mem machines which in things like Lightroom have a big impact. Also an m1max vs m4pro review would be nice. Trying to decide on m4pro vs max with 48gb coming from a 64gb m1max.
@@maxweinbach3996 I don't see the relation.... Apple destroyed the competition for sure. The question now, for me, coming from M1MAX/64GB - will I (or can I) be happy with the M4PRO/48GB, giving me better battery life for non-compute intensive tasks (80% of my day to day), or will I get bummed, for the 20% that I do need compute intensive tasks (mostly photo and video editing), that I didn't get up the M4MAX.

I‘ve had enough of video-editing benchmarks. Why doesn’t anyone try machine learning on these devices, so we can see how size of shared memory, and the GPU counts affect learning speed?
I'll be making a video about that (on a 14" M4 Pro MBP with 48 GB of memory). Which model do you have in mind? And are you more interested in speed or model size?
14:19 Wait, wait, that battery performance .... You are comparing 46% (of 72.4kWh battery) to 48% (of 99.6kWh battery) like it was the same scale?! This means 14" used 54% of 72.4kWh = 39.1kWh for the same work where 16" used 52% of that 99.6kWh = 51.8kWh. 39.1kWh vs 51.8kWh, that is 12.7kWh difference. Seems like batteries would last very close, in time.
Yeah I don’t get that part. If it was 46% in the 14 inch what percentage would it have been if the unbinned was in the 14inch and measured at the same time? Maybe 35% roughly?
I just got a refund from best buy, 14” 14 core with 1TB dropped to $2099, a steal if you ask me. I “downgraded” from an M1 Pro 16”, the portability triumphed the larger screen and better battery, what good is a larger battery if you’re not going to take it with you because of the size?
I have a video about the fan noise (with audio recording): I pushed the CPU to 100% on my 14" M4 Pro MBP and it's "as bad" as my old 2019 Intel 16" MBP. That’s fine, but then are you backing up what’s stored on an external drive.. onto another external drive? Isn’t that super tedious? Do you plug both drives into the Mac at the same time and manually make 2 copies of everything? Or do most pay for cloud storage and use that as a backup to the external drive? Internal and external drives do fail.. so again, how are y’all backing up years worth of files?

Your comment helps, as I also value size, sound and the comfort of being able to sit for hours.

1:22 man that dent on the 14 inch macbook pro is CRINGE
It would have been interesting to include the 16" M4 Max to this and see if the price jump from the 14" Pro to the 16" Max is better justified than to the 16" Pro.
The dent in MBP 14" breaks my heart :D
The video does not really show how much better the sound of the speakers in on the 16" (you need to hear it yourself). I can do video calls with the 16" all the day without headset - but it's really no fun at all with a 14" (sound quality and fan noise - I'm running some performance hungry apps during the day)
I have an M3 Pro 16” for work. I had an M1 Max 14” and now have a M4 Pro 14”. I thought I’d like the 16” more than I do, but honestly the portability of the 14” is totally worth it.
Nah I love my 16 m4 max. I had a 14 pro m3 and I’ll never go back to that size after owning a 16
I am just now watching this on the 14 inch M4 pro with the exact specs.
The choice is easy.
If you use a monitor go with 14 inch.
If you just use the MacBook itself go with 16 inch.
And if you travel?
@@raiiiargo with the “16 still. There’s no monitors in a hotel room.

Whenever I move elsewhere, family house, sofa, bed, office - having that 16" screen is a bliss.
@@Skaratak me too. 24” 4K At the desk.
No, just go with a 16.
The size, cooler temps, and quieter operation easily justifies the extra $500 of the 16" regardless of performance so best to choose based on portability of your use case. If its just sitting on my desk 16" all day but if I have to travel, take it home every day, or want to work in a coffee shop I'll go 14".
A comparison between the 14-inch 12-core and 14-core models please. Would you recommend the upgrade ? Thermal throttling problem ? Fan noise ?
Gaming laptops are also very overrated. I don’t want to carry around a cooling pad and 500000w power brick
Without an external screen at home, and if you use your laptop at work as many do, I prefer the 16 inch. I have a 16 inch M1 Pro and I'm glad I got the larger size. Now, with the M4 Pro, and a nano-textured display, the 16 inch is making me very tempted!
I'd only go with a 16” if I planned to use it for work. The size difference is massive for daily driving and is well worth the cost difference.
14 is for users who want a workstation & also portability
16 is for users who want a workstation & maximise the performance
There might be a bigger difference between M4 Max 14 and 16 under extensive use since the M4 Pro chips are less powerfull and quite efficient in both chassis.
After watching this video, I feel like it makes more sense to go with the binned chip version of the Mac Mini instead of the full chip.
What mean by binned? Cant be overclocked?
@@ADHDOCDbinned version has 2 less performance cores in comparison to unbinned version. Actually these 2 cores are physically present on the chip, but they have been disabled as some of them can be defective (during manufacturing process). However as long as they are disabled they don’t affect stability of whole M4 Pro chip. There is no possibility to enable them.
I think upgrading from binned to unbinned M4 Pro is a very poor value.
Buy binned Pro or un binned Max.
The video really doesn't make sense for comparison
If the chip isn't the same you're not differentiating the 14 & 16 you're just comparing 2 computers based on price
The 14 & 16 need to have the same configuration to make a comparison
@otwer22 @panmanafro @skeyechi what means unbinned please?
Honestly, i think the performance is not the main reason ppl go with the 16inch base model. I just want wider field of view 😮 my old eyes get so soar looking at small screens…
The 14 inch is sufficient for most uses and is significantly lighter - this is the choice for me
What’s up with the dent on the 14 inch? Is it more prone to denting?
have had an M1 Pro for 3 years, zero dents...
Only if you're a professional dentist.
I had the same worry
Yeh, saw it straight away in the back left of the 14". I've had no dents in my M1 MBP but certainly got a ding in my final Intel MBP when I had to put my personal bag into the cargo compartment on a small plane. Thought the M-chip cases were a bit more resilient.
What dent? Why am I not seeing any?
Can you do a review of real world performance of m4pro 24gb vs 48gb?! Feels like historically a lot of the pro and max reviews were of higher mem machines which in things like Lightroom have a big impact.
Also an m1max vs m4pro review would be nice. Trying to decide on m4pro vs max with 48gb coming from a 64gb m1max.
Doesn't matter when Apple has destroyed the competition
@@maxweinbach3996 I don't see the relation.... Apple destroyed the competition for sure. The question now, for me, coming from M1MAX/64GB - will I (or can I) be happy with the M4PRO/48GB, giving me better battery life for non-compute intensive tasks (80% of my day to day), or will I get bummed, for the 20% that I do need compute intensive tasks (mostly photo and video editing), that I didn't get up the M4MAX.
It would have been helpful of you let us hear the difference in fan noise on each machine, but thanks for the comparison. I'd love to know how the 24GB RAM in the M4 Pro compares to 32GB of older RAM in the M1 or M2 Pro.
I have a sound recording of the 14" M4 Pro fans (12 cores) on my channel.
I‘ve had enough of video-editing benchmarks. Why doesn’t anyone try machine learning on these devices, so we can see how size of shared memory, and the GPU counts affect learning speed?
Agree. In one of previous vids i did comment about ollama for ai which is just few clicks to run so no big deal even for people who are not into it.
Alex Ziskand is your guy
I'll be making a video about that (on a 14" M4 Pro MBP with 48 GB of memory). Which model do you have in mind? And are you more interested in speed or model size?
You should do a m4 pro vs m3 max comparison
What do you mean in time? , it’s still a big difference
Was strongly considering a 14 inch m4 Pro with nano texture and 2tb unbinned. Probably keeping my 16” m4 max glossy unbinned though
Which will give more performance m4 pro (12core CPU 16 core GPU)MacBook Pro OR Mac mini m4 pro (12core CPU 16 core GPU)
24gb 512 gb variant?
I think macbook pro have better cooling system otherwise they should perform almost same.
I went with the mini and no regrets
I just got a refund from best buy, 14” 14 core with 1TB dropped to $2099, a steal if you ask me. I “downgraded” from an M1 Pro 16”, the portability triumphed the larger screen and better battery, what good is a larger battery if you’re not going to take it with you because of the size?
What the heck did you do to that 14 inch? dented the f out of it
Also saw this lol
I have a video about the fan noise (with audio recording): I pushed the CPU to 100% on my 14" M4 Pro MBP and it's "as bad" as my old 2019 Intel 16" MBP. But It's completely silent (fans are off!) for RUclips watching, screen recording or having an external monitor attached - 3 things that would spin my 2019 Intel MBP fans quite fast.
conclusion seems clear, a binned version is a better value for money deal, shame 16' doesn't have a binned version option
For sure or better performance something that makes it seem like we are getting our moneys worth.
the 16 hands down is the best, everything is just better on it, and no its not that heavy at all lol....having all this power on the go especially traveling is insane, another is being able to use this for multiple days sometimes without charging is nuts as well...
I went from 16” M1 Pro MacBook Pro to 14” m4 pro MacBook Pro, huge difference in weight.
I’m curious what you guys do for backing up files in case of an internal or external drive failure. Many suggest not paying for internal storage and using external.
I use a RAID, redundancy in one enclosure.
I wish someone would compare 16 core in 16" to 14" so we can see any thermal throttling or performance differences over long workloads
I just ordered 14" with CPU upgraded (w/48 GB of ram) for heavy photo management and editing. It will ship to me next week. if I don't forget about this, I will update to you later that It has any thermal throttling or not.

How loud are the 14” & 16” M4 models by comparison to the M3 models
Iv owned the m4 pro version. Sold it and paid the extra for the m4 max version. Absolutely no noticeable difference in everyday activity and most other tasks. yes you'll save 30/60 seconds when carrying out very intensive tasks. is this worth the extra cash. ABSOLUTELY NOT . seems like 14in M4 Pro 12/16 is the way to go, trying to decide whether to get this spec with 48GB RAM/1TB SSD, or 24GB RAM/1TB SSD. is double the RAM really worth $360?
How is it possible that the battery of the 14" MacBook Pro, in previous tests, drops to 25% and 29% with the same tests?
Maybe, the 16" MacBook Pro has to calibrate the battery?
Maybe it will come down to longer projects and exports. That better thermal architecture should help in the long run.
Will the mac mini 12 vs 14 pro cores be the exact same results?
Did you find any reasons why you can't select more than 36GB of ram with the 14-core M4 Max chip configuration?
Do you think you will be able to compare 14" vs 16" models but using the same chip , ideally M4 Max 16c cpu/ 40c gpu?
So what do you think in the 14inch should I get the 12-core or 14-core? What would be the battery life difference between them as in this video the 16inch has a larger battery so not sure what the battery difference is if it’s at 46% vs 48% what would it have been if it was in a 14inch?
Your wasting everyone’s time here, you already have a 12/16 and are trying to decide to return to get the 14/20.
I have a M4 Pro 16” but it doesn’t show me the power modes when I click on the battery, how can I change it?
Really surprised there isn't more of a performance delta. It seems if you were comparing the same spec CPU and GPU, they'd be near identical.
Is there already a dent on the 14" top?
I still believed that the Base M4 model should be the best for over 90% of the users. the M4 Pro model indeed shrink the power gap between various Pro models and Max models across previous generations, however the base M4 model already is a great powerhouse sufficient for most people. And you get the same chassis, same QD-miniLED display upgrade, same sound quality, same I/O support and mostly important, MUCH MORE BATTERY LIFE with much lower amazing price!
I believe you’re using the term binned in reverse. Binned is usually used for the better, not the normal chip.
Do you recommend 12-core pro or the 14-core pro if I keep the laptop for 7 years?
