This really seems to be a choice between an overclocked, hotter, louder machine with lower battery life vs a lower performance, quieter, cooler, longer running machine. I love the improved performance of the M4 Pro but, not at the expense of the hotter temps and louder fans. It seems the M3 Pro is actually much better optimized for the size of the 14" chassis. If I want a total beast of a machine and performance is the only metric, then I'll wait for the M4 Max Mac Studio. I need a laptop to be a laptop.

Nice comparison👍Apple should make dual fans mandatory with every single MBP Mx Pro or Max chip. Cooling should also finally upgrade with top tier MBP to vapor chamber, like example packed MBP 14" with the Mx Max chip. Also I wonder how much cooling is lost because of the IHS instead of direct die contact. Direct die cooling with the liquid metal has been proven by everybody including Sony's PS5 as so far the BEST cooling option available, so maybe Apple should think about it as well as a wave of the future.

I would keep in mind that that was an artificial benchmark made to push it to it’s limits. I don’t think it will throttle in other programs like it did in cinebench
@@Leroez09 yeah but if you will not push it to the limit, why do you need the 14 core version then? keep this one and will be more than enough, and save the money difference and get better battery life.
Indeed, to me the m3 pro is overall the better deal. To me, noise, heat and battery life (i.e. future-proof endurance) have become very important factors in my purchase decision. So anything that gets hotter or noisier or has less battery is for me straight up a downgrade. In my case, waiting slightly longer for a task to finish is irrelevant since it is anyways task dependent. I feel like I'd have to render and compile the same thing 30x a day to notice any significant difference between the m3 pro and the m4 pro.
If you push the cores and GPU to the limit, M4 Pro battery will drain faster because it has more power. But in a regular scenario, with only browser and some apps, the M4 Pro battery duration is longer than M3 Pro.
I don't know who upgrades their laptop every year! But the RUclipsrs should also compare M4 Pro with the M1 Pro so that 1st gen owners know whether it is worth upgrading or no!
Love the numbers and your broad approach. But please make sure the bar charts include the full range. Looking at you, blender benchmark. 49s and 67s are not on the same scale.

For heavy 4k video editing, what configuration would your recommend? Is Macbook Pro M4 Pro with 24 gigas of RAM and 1TB enough? Should I Upgrade to 48 gigas of RAM? Thanks in advance!!
What’s the temperature of the room your in? Thermal throttling may not happen if the room is 65 or lower. I found that out with my M1 Max. 80 degree room in the summer and massive throttling and fan use.
HELP! Should I buy the M3 Pro or the M4 model? They are the almost the same price and I don’t know which one to buy and I need to upgrade my late 2011 MacBook Pro (still rocking but too old know), I’m a graphic designer and I use mostly Adobe
For the photo export test maybe add ingesting the photos into the test time. The external media i’m sure plays some part in that performance, but it would show how fast each Mac is at importing photos / files
Hi Max, thanks for your work! I'have a question: M4pro takes you 49s for blender test. Your test with Party Tug was on the native demo file in Cycles GPU compute without any change?
Why? That is an incredibly powerful laptop. The 16-inch m3 pro macbook has by default the unbinned version 12-core CPU. It easily outperforms the M2 Max Studio. It will run extremely quiet, super cool to the touch and you’ll likely have the same or more battery life than the newer M4 versions under moderate-heavy load. In rough terms, the M4 chips just feel more like an overclocked and hotter version of the M3 chips.
Do you think is still a good time to buy Pro Display XDR when there is no rumors for a new upgrade soon in 2025 or 2026 ? I saw you have one and I need your opinion.
Thanks guys! Can you do a comparison between M4 and M4 Pro 14 inch? We want to see if paying extra for the M4 Pro is worth it. Please focus on hot temperature, fan noise, and battery. Thank you a lot.
Should I buy the 14” M4 MacBook Pro with the m4 pro 24gb 512gb or m4 16gb 512gb configuration for my use case?. I need it for beginners photo and video editing, programming, web browsing, watching yt videos, listening to music and podcasts with high quality audio interface and headphones amp, taking it to university, and media consumption.
For a beginner the M4 would probably be good enough for you. But the performance difference is massive with M4 Pro in many tests. If you don’t want to wait, there you go
@ Thank you Max Tech! I actually plan to buy one in the next months, but if the regular m4, then it’s not better to get a MacBook Air or Mac mini instead or even an iMac instead? Since MacBook Pro is for performance machine and usually people buy it with the pro chip at least. What do you think about that?
@@iluvj00 Thank you! Sounds good. Since my current gaming monitor is 24” too. But I won’t use the keyboard and mouse from Apple coming with it but instead use the Logitech Mx keys mini for Mac and the Logitech Mx master 3s for Mac both in black. Still worth the price in your opinion?
@@oren_katz listen, i've seen designers work on the slowests macbooks ever, with 50% brightness monitor and keyboards with erased letters... You will be fine on the imac m4... that monitor is superb, and the m4 chip destroys any chip on the market at that price... just get enough ram and at least 512gb ssd, then work from an external drive.
I ordered the regular M4 Pro Macbook Pro w/ chip upgrade to 14-CPU 20-GPU 24-RAM 512SSD. I felt like it was the best value I could get for $200. Would appreciate seeing how this chip compares with M2 Ultra and M3 Max
For the battery test it would be nice to see how long each of them stays on playing RUclips for example. While you have the performance hardly anyone will be pushing it to the max all thime. More realistic use is light tasks with occasional push I think
I just bought an M3 Pro 16" for $1700 even and the only thing keeping me from regretting it is that a few years of AppleCare+ were included 😭 the M4 MacBooks are a surprising jump, I thought it'd be more incremental before they were announced tbh
I think my dilemma is the fact that the battery life is being consumed more in the M4 pro. Obviously it's because they have 4 efficiency cores instead of 6 cores now. I really wanted to get my MBP this year but that issue plus no wifi 7 has me on the fence.
But only if you push the device all the time. If you do some normal or mid work it will mostly use the e cores and only a few p cores. And if you don't need to be mobile or have a old machbook to use as a terminal for remote connect just get a Mac mini with the M4 Pro.
Hey there, have you done this type of extensive comparison between the latest MacBook Pro and latest i9 or Ryzen gaming laptop? One other thing - for the Lightroom test, could you consider changing it to images with different people with AI masks and AI Denoise added to every photo? Thanks.
Good test of M3 and M4 pro binned MBP. I’ll stick with my M3 Pro as the fan never comes on and the battery life is phenomenal. If I needed more power maybe I’d go for M4 pro but I don’t. But good to see the M series MBPs pushing ahead

@@videofrat3115 I agree I think the 12 core will be enough for most. I don’t think the 14 core will add much benefit in the 14 inch
How about doing a battery test for the low power mode? Interested to see how it will perform and how much battery life will be expanded...
I'm dissapointed about battery life. Thought M4Pro would do much better. Maybe in lighter task scenario.
A 12-14 core cpu in a 14-inch package. Unfortunately, thermals and battery life will be disappointing because of physics.
If you push the cores and GPU to the limit, M4 Pro battery will drain faster because it has more power. But in a regular scenario, with only browser and some apps, the M4 Pro battery duration is longer than M3 Pro.
@@drdudewin if there's a way of power limiting the SoC then M4 should be better with much better performance when needed
@@hoodie8819That’s called low power mode!
please do 12-core pro vs 14-core pro! struggling on which one to get! please do it as soon as possible , thank you
Can't wait for M4 Max comparison with M3 Max.
I don't know who upgrades their laptop every year! But the RUclipsrs should also compare M4 Pro with the M1 Pro so that 1st gen owners know whether it is worth upgrading or no!
Agreed
M4 Max 14" vs M4 Pro 14" - Does it throttle to make the M4 Pro perform the same?
Thanks for testing the battery life out this way. I feels it’s far more representative than the usual tests of long RUclips for 24 hours till it dies
It would be interesting to compare M4 and M3 pro MacBook Pros since the refurbished M3 pro is now going for about the same price as the M4.
So excited to purchase mine. These laptops are built to last. Still using my Mac Pro from 2013.
Thank you so much for including the logic pro test 🌿
What about if you can get the M3 with a heavy discount because the M4 is out? Nobody seems to talk about that.
Looking forward to your M4 MAX 16” laptop review!
Now please compare the 16 inch M3 vs M4 and then a second video 14 inch M4 pro vs 16 inch M4 Pro
It think it's time guys. Please test MacBook M4 vs PowerBook G4.
This laptop would be enough to run Davinci Resolve on it right ?
Which one should I get. M3 max 36gb/1tb or M4 pro 48/512gb. Both are coming at the same price?
will the Davinci Resolve have same results?
PLEASE do m3 pro vs m4! They are the same price right now
Love the wall in your background 👍🏽
Great video. I love how you try and cover every angle / use case with your benchmarks.
Thanks for this video.
How about a comparison between M4 MacBook Pro and M3 Pro MacBook Pro base models?
quick question what do you use to check the stats of the cpu, gpu, and temperature on the top corner?
Love the numbers and your broad approach. But please make sure the bar charts include the full range. Looking at you, blender benchmark. 49s and 67s are not on the same scale.
For heavy 4k video editing, what configuration would your recommend? Is Macbook Pro M4 Pro with 24 gigas of RAM and 1TB enough? Should I Upgrade to 48 gigas of RAM? Thanks in advance!!
M4P20c + 48GB RAM + 2 TB
I want Apple to bring back and make a M4 Max 17 inch display. My 17 inch 2011 run seqouia and work just fine for basic things
You made me buy it. I made the jump from m1 MacBook Air. I don’t like the keyboard and the size and weight difference, but at the end it is a win.
What’s the temperature of the room your in? Thermal throttling may not happen if the room is 65 or lower. I found that out with my M1 Max. 80 degree room in the summer and massive throttling and fan use.
It would be nice to see an M1 Pro 16" to M4 Pro 16" comparison.
HELP! Should I buy the M3 Pro or the M4 model? They are the almost the same price and I don’t know which one to buy and I need to upgrade my late 2011 MacBook Pro (still rocking but too old know), I’m a graphic designer and I use mostly Adobe
M4 pro def
Can you please compare an upgraded m4 iMac with an m4 MacBook Pro?
For the photo export test maybe add ingesting the photos into the test time. The external media i’m sure plays some part in that performance, but it would show how fast each Mac is at importing photos / files
Hi Max, thanks for your work! I'have a question: M4pro takes you 49s for blender test. Your test with Party Tug was on the native demo file in Cycles GPU compute without any change?
That's cool, but how does it do against a top end windows PC?
Please make displays comparison close up, how a text looks like
Crying on my 16 inches M3 pro MacBook Pro 😢
Crying? Nah that's a good machine. Unless you only got the 8GB model, then yes maybe cry a little 😢😂
Can you test the 14 inch m4 max vs 16 inch m4 max? I need to know if it throttles before buying
Are you going to do this for the 16 inch?
I feel so bad having bought m3 pro 1999 base few months ago. This m4 pro is solid.
Dont worry you still have a great laptop.
me too... knowing the base model comes with 24 gigs of ram.... but the nano texture is what makes me feel bad.
Worth just getting a m2 MBP? It'll be cheaper for sure and pretty close to specs? On a budget.
I would like to see a comparision with the MbPro M3 Pro 12 core 1TB. There is no great gain upgrading to M4 Pro for just who bought the M3 Pro 12 1TB
holy smokes M1 vs M4 just 50% but 100% full uphrade
Yeah, more power usage isn't good. What would they even do with M5 Apple Silicon, how would they reduce power consumption.
@@oren_katz get the imac m4 and lots of ram... the screen is top notch for your work...
You should do a 16" chassis comparison on M3 pro and M4 pro. There are a lot of power users who might be interested in it.
Im planning to get the m4 pro for davinci. 24 gb of ram is enough or should i go for 48 gb of ram?
Thanks.
Can you test m4 vs m3 pro for rendering? Also macbook m4/m4 pro and m3 pro for 3d in general
14 Core M4 Pro with 1TB SSD got: 5,146 MB/s read, 6,436 MB/s write.
Good test of M3 and M4 pro binned MBP. I’ll stick with my M3 Pro as the fan never comes on and the battery life is phenomenal. If I needed more power maybe I’d go for M4 pro but I don’t. But good to see the M series MBPs pushing ahead
I really want to see a comparison between m4 max and the best windows laptop on the market
We will do that
That’s nice. Would you also do a giveaway? An M4 or M4 Pro would be amazing
@@MaxTechOfficial Please, Max we also need M4 Max vs M3 Max.
Thinking of going from base m3 pro to base m4 max in the 14 inch for doubling performance cores, RAM, storage, and media engines for video encoding
Wrong choice ! 14 inches chassis is way too small for all the power the M4 Max can delivers…
You would better get the 16 inches for better cooling capacity, or stick with the M4 Pro if you prefer the 14 inches format.
@@Bivouac20nooo I got the m4 max in 14”
16 inch is worth it for the M4 Max because of the better cooling. But if you want a 14 inch the M4 Max can mame sense because of double the encoders.
@@Bivouac20 Thanks for the input! I’ve been trying to decide if it’s worth going to the 16 inch for extra cooling capacity. Hoping to see some more comparisons on this channel of the two sizes soon
