I have been doing this for years but didn’t know it had a name! I use sweet almond oil, and when it’s done and completely dry, I do free machine embroidery on it, it’s lovely to work on!
Sounds interesting
I Googled "What is momigami paper?" and your video was shown. Thanks for the information and demonstrating the technique. Your instructions are easy and non intimidating to follow.
Does the oil go rancid?
@@lindamcdonald9199 no, I have never had a problem as long as the paper is completely dry….i usually leave it for several days. Enjoy trying it out!
In a parallel universe, somebody is turning cloth into paper
Actually I've been turning denim into paper for years, lol

In this universe 😂
Found you while browsing anf happy to have found you. Best wishes from the Falkland Islands 🐧 🐧😃
I was just browsing while I had my morning coffee. I do lots of paper craft, mostly book and journal making. Haven’t tried this technique but I will. Thank you for sharing.
Hi Donna...Thanks for viewing. After discovering Momigami with oil I found out you can do it with hand lotion...I prefer the hand lotion as it is less messy. Take care Donna!
This was just recommended to me through my youtube algorithm but i'm happy it was recommended since it's super interesting!
Hi mai-ja...Thanks for the comment. I actually discovered how to make momigami with hand lotion that I find less messy and easier to use when finished..same method of crumbling and adding lotion...have fun!
@@treemaidenart Ooh thank you for the tip! I really gotta give this technique a try. I am trying to start and include some more mixed media techniques in my paintings and more textures and this seems like it would be super interesting! Lots of love from Finland!
No I wasn't looking for it. But I will try it.
Gracias estaba en una búsqueda y casualmente lo encontré muy bueno
Maybe I missed it but do you keep oiling your hands after each flattening of the paper? Could mineral oil be used instead of a food based oil? Love your work.
Muchas Gracias
I did a search for momigami.
Great video, may I ask what can the paper be painted with before making it into the cloth, I have some pages covered with acrylic paint colour also Tim holz printing inks would these work ! Thanks xxxShaz 😀New Subscriber and bell on!! 🔔 😆
I used paper with acrylic paint on it. Any permanent in would work too. thanks for viewing!
@@treemaidenart thank you for getting back to me !
Have you tried this with deli paper?
Can i use magazine paper for this?
Hi Sherry...I don't think it would hold up...but try it...you can only lose a magazine page.
Love this. But maybe start oiling the unpainted side first so the cellulose paper fibres can absorb the oil easier than the painted side resisting the oil initially
Thanks for watching..great tip Angie. Take care friend.
She actually did start on the blank side.😊
Forgot to say, I print my own photographs on to copier papier (for the computer) and then oil them, and then machine embroider on top…it’s a lovely hobby!
Sounds great...a sewing machine would come in so handy! I only do slow stitch.
This is a beautiful piece. Robyn McClendon, an artist I have followed for about 5 years now, has been creating momigami papers as part of her working through the aesthetics of Japanese art. I have done some but I want to do more. I am very impressed with yours. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Margaret. I think Robyn was one of the 4 or 5 videos I watched on this technique. She does such beautiful work. There is another content creator named Froyle out of New Zealand who also follows Robyn and does some lovely work.
@@treemaidenart Yes, I have been following Froyle as well. I have learned so much over the years from Robyn and am a 2nd level Patreon member so I have access to all her book making projects as well as the collage. This is the first time I have come across your channel and I do love the momigami piece you do in this video. I have subscribed. 😀
I am in Australia
@@scrapbagstudios Thanks for subscribing Margaret
I do this but use more oil than this, didn’t know the name as I have tried many things to put on paper to let it obsorbe to see the differences.
I actually did a search for momigami, but I came across it by accident from another RUclips tutorial, and I was so fascinated by it. Thanks for sharing your tips.
We use to do this as kids with brown paper grocery bags to make our book covers. ♡
Same here!!!
Thank you for saying this! I was watching this thinking, "I learned this years ago as a kid! "
Does the oil leech through to the book?
I have a pile of broken paper covered in oily marks in my hands. 😂
I've made faux leather using kraft paper and glycerin. This is similar!
Hi Elizabeth..yes it is similiar.
Hi, I'm in the UK. I searched to find a video about this. I've seen a Danish artist create this before, but don't recall she used any kind of oil, or anything additional.
Hi from FL. Just did a search for momigami and randomly picked you. I will be doing this on Sat. I have a craft mix media show on Tuesday and Thursday and Saturday at 6pm eastern if you want to peak in. We’re starting felting Thursday now and this will be for Saturdays project. God bless💙
I am fascinated by momigami, so have searched for it. Your demonstration is excellent. It is obvious that patience is 🎉essential, and I expect the oil will be soothing.
Hi Carolyn. Thanks and yes it is messy but relaxing. I have another more recent video using hand lotion which is less messy. Thanks for viewing.
I was looking for this because I have some ideas for a miniature diorama I'm doing and wanted light weight paper that looks like cloth to make wall hangings and I had to see if it worked on light weight paper as well as glossy (which was in a video where I first saw thus technique. This looks perfect ❤
I had watched a video earlier on making Momigami and tried to use hand lotion and a page from a magazine, as I saw on a video. But the magazine page was just disintegrating and ripping into a little bits. I was looking to see what the best paper was to use and came across your helpful RUclips! Thank you for your video!
I’m a collage artist who makes cards and am interested in this process for my collage work. I live in South Carolina and just found this on RUclips and got interested, very interested.
I did a search for it, not knowing the name I put in making paper to cloth. I’m a junk journal enthusiast and mixed media artist so I want to give this a try! Thank you for a very good video.
Is it possible to use this for books covers? They are wonderful! Thank you!
I love mix media. Your video came up as a suggestion, I have never heard of this but do make leather look paper with Glycerine. I really enjoyed your video, thank you for sharing.
I’m researching this media for my textiles A level ,hopefully I’ll use the fibre in an appliqué peice
your video was very interesting and informative. i was looking for brown paper bag leather information and saw the word momigami. the concept of making cloth out of paper is so unusual i had to see what it was all about. thank you for your video, i enjoyed learning about momigami. I love that word. could a person transform a magazine page or cover into cloth, what are your thoughts on that? thank you again for the sweet video.
I love this technique. Explain what the starch is for. How heavy was your cardstock? It looked more like designer paper in weight. I presume DPS can be used. I would like to see a video on some of the ways you used. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Cheerful Greetings. The starch is just another technique. It was ordinary cardstock, sorry I forgot the weight but after you add acrylic paint(I mentioned it was printed paper, done with a gel plate)it makes it a bit thicker
Where can I buy that tissue paper that you used, please?
I’ve been trying to find out if, once fully dry, this paper can be used with water based mediums? If glued down in a collage with a medium can it be painted over? Thank you so much.
Have you ever tried it with baby oil? I have a bottle at my studio for the gelli plate and think I’ll try it!
I am in several mixed media groups. I’m just beginning my journey. Luckily I just stumbled onto your video and I can’t wait to try it!
I have used the papers after I dabbed all the excess oil off and left it to dry out for a couple weeks. Used it a couple times in one of my journals and after 7 months it is still fine..If you are concerned I did another video just a couple days ago using lotion..check that one out. Thanks for viewing Cat
I have made this using other mediums to massage but I thought I would try the oil. I got it to the soft stage and it looks okay. But it has been nearly two weeks and the oil will not dry. Any ideas
Didn't the konjaku get washed out or were those garments never washed? Thank you for the video!
Thank you for this video. I've tried this technique before - using just hand cream as shown by someone else. And I have to say, I wasn't really happy with the results. (Maybe I used the wrong hand cream?) However, I have just used the method that you share - using olive oil. And although the piece hasn't dried yet, I can already tell that it's a big improvement. Plus, you have led me to Froyle, and as a New Zealander, I am very excited to follow her channel too. Thank you. 🧡💚🤎
I searched after someone in a fb group I belong to made beads from momigami paper.
I like kneading my paper covered with Baby Oil.
And you get moisturized hands as a side effect!
Beautiful! ❤ how do you glue them? They are greasy, or do you dry them somehow?
It’s the same as making fake leather from brown paper bag, I use hand lotion instead of oil
Stumbled on your video. This is new to me and a must try for my mixed media! Thanks !
Hi, I'm in Australia. The name was posted when someone described what they had used in a picture. I googled momigami and found you. Thank you for the tutorial.
Hi, so the oil doesn't turn rancid at some point?
.Me interesó el comentario sobre Nueva Escocia gracias buen momento
I Googled momigami with starch because I don't think I want oily paper. This was helpful, I saw your recipe. Will search further to see more on that. Hi from Arizona.
Hi Kristin...from Nova Scotia
I am a quilter and wanting to do art quilts
Fascinating. I was looking for a way to incorporate my watercolor into a quilt, and needed to see how to turn watercolor paper into fabric. WHo knew that not only did it have a name, but it also is an old technique!
Hi Bird Watcher..I must warn you it stays oily for a long time. I would try using hand lotion first for a less greasy effect.🙂
That's a brilliant idea!😃
Mixed media doll sculpture group, “GoFigure “
I did something like this with my school kids when I was teaching.
Oooh fun! Curious because of oil, will these papers glue down to substrates or use polymer to keep down ? And will these dye with ink or acrylics ? Txz sooooo much! Jeanne
Hi Jeanne! The piece I did in the video was a piece of cardstock that I designed with acrylic paint on a geli plate. The oils stay for quite a long time so I would be careful where I put them probably best to glue onto a surface like parchment paper or cardstock first then onto a journal page or collage. I should think an industrial glue like E 6000 or possibly Aleene's tacky glue might suffice. I have only used them on collages on canvas(torn pieces) and used Aleene's tacky glue. Thanks for watching Jeanne!
I did this today. It was so soothing.
Wouldn't you brush on the oil first?
I use this paper to wrap small gifts
Hello. I saw another artist yesterday and subbed her channel and today you popped up! Fun stuff! I have done the leather paper. Not part of a group, just little old me!! LOL Blessings!
Hi Jeanne..happy to have little old you visit my little old channel😊 Hopefully you will find other videos that are of interest to you. Take care Jeanne, hope to hear from you again.
Yes, I have been searching for ideas of using different solutions for the momagami glue...I want to see how the starch method works too...I tried the olive oil, but gosh it took forever to dry...
Wonderful!
I just happen to run across this technique today and I think it is just the neatest thing! Can you tell me what different sort of papers are acceptable to use? I have watercolor and acrylic papers and paints in the house... Also, plain colored cardstock. I believe you are using cardstock you said? But... I could want to paint on paper, too? Thnku...😊
Hi Cathy...I used cardstock that had acrylic paint on it...you can use copy paper too but it is more fragile. I have not tried on rice paper or anything that thin...thanks for viewing
You can also use hair conditioner
Hello from Auckland, New Zealand. This just popped up on my fees and I'd never heard of it before so gave it a watch and am glad I did! Fascinating technique and lovely piece at the end of it. Will probably try this for myself and have subscribed. TFS
I am here because I watched another momigami video from Robyn Mcclendon (I watch all her videos) and after this yours was suggested for me... I use coconut oil - it smells better!
Awesome! Thank you!
Was your geli print an acrylic paint or alcohol inks. It looks beautiful. I tried an acrylic geli print. I guess i was too rough with it. It had alot holes, so i used it for a boarder on project. It became the feel of crepe paper. The konnyaku process i believe uses the konjac powder. I googled it, they both the same devils tongue root. I used olive oil. But i did rub it all over both sides and edges before crushed to ball. Tried 2xs before got one no holes. The copy paper seemed to work best for me. But i may have been too rough the first two. Thanks for video. Take care, be safe.
Hi there...sorry to hear you were getting holes. The gel print was with acrylic paint. Have fun with it!
lol i did search for this by myself
I searched because I saw Mike Deakin talk about Momigami. I want to try!
Have fun! Remember this method is oily..some prefer the starch method
I did do a search for it because I watched someone on my junk Journal RUclips channel making it and I wanted to see how other people did it. So I have been researching ways to make it for my journal that is not too complicated
Hi Judie..actually I tried it with lotion and preferred that method,(it is essentially the same but with lotion) as it is less messy..hope you try it..thanks for viewing Judie.
Hi there, RUclips was friendly enough to propose your video to me. Never heard of Momigami before, only knew Origami. I am really glad that you used a gel print. I have some that I don't like too much which can be used to give this a try with oil and maybe lotion as well. Your pieces turned out stunning! Thanks for sharing. Greetings from Germany, Andrea
Thank you so much 😀
Hadn’t heard of this before. I stumbled on this. I am wondering if the oil in this paper leaves a residue and leaves an oil stain or transfers to other papers in a project
Hi Celine..yes it will...You have to be careful where you use it...I suggest you use hand lotion instead and let it dry for a long time.
Wonderful. Does anyone know if this could be done with paper that has been watercolored?
Hi jesmarluk...I think it should be fine but I would try on a scrap piece of paper to be sure...and also if you use hand lotion instead of oil it is less messy
Hi I’m new in your channel. I love how it’s came out your paper. I wanted to ask you can you make earrings out of that paper? I do love to make earring, and was wondering how do you use this for earring? Thank you. I love how it’s came out your paper kind of soft. Thank you again.⭐️⭐️⭐️
Hi Rosaelina. I am not sure how you might use this for earrings, especially considering there is oil in the paper. The only thing that comes to mind is to finish it with resin., but that it a totally different process, maybe one you might be interested in using. I have a few videos on resin work on my list of videos. Hopefully you will find something that will help. Take care friend.
@@treemaidenart good morning from my home town California, thank you for responding back. I see what you are saying! Yes I did see you added oil in your hand. Yes I think that will be a problem making it and them using the clear pray to make it’s kind of shinny, I think this won’t work…. Well I’ll check on your videos. Thank you again, so much for your help. And you have a fabulous… ⭐️🙋♀️⭐️
would this method work with decorative napkins?
They would be too flimsy to withstand the scrunching I believe..Thanks for viewing.
Very interesting, found it by accident! I have been a teacher painting on fabric, will give this a try! Thank you
Hi Marlene. Happy you found it. It only takes a few days for the smell to dissipate but needs quite a long time to dry. Have fun and thanks for watching.
@@treemaidenartdo you know if the starch used by the Japanese to make paper more like cloth, is able to be glued for collage, also this oil paper as well? I wonder if being oily it would not allow glue to stick to it. Thanks for your video.
With all the oil, how do you glue it to paper? I would think it won't stick very well....
The oil is rather hard to work with. I use hand lotion now as it is easier to use when finished.
I just found you while looking for the history of mamigami paper. I learned a lot from you. The first RUclips video I saw about how to make it just had you knead the paper. I like how the oil darkened your paper. I saw your playlist and many videos I want to watch.
Hi Sandi...so glad you found me. I hope you enjoy my other videos. Take care Sandi
I actually did search for this as I love the feel of hand made paper and fabric in journals. Though I use coconut oil the results seem the same. Thank you for sharing a great post
Thank you so much Pinni..it is kind of you to say. Hope you have a great day!
Hi from Northern Ontario! This just popped up for me. Really cool. I do mixed media art and love to incorporate fabric in my journals! Thanks for sharing!
Hi jayne...So nice to hear from a fellow Canadian. I do journals too but usually use fabric only in my vintage ones...if you decide to use this technique maybe attach to cardstock or tissue first as the oils remain for quite some time. Happy journalling and thanks for watching.
@@treemaidenart thanks- great idea- I'd have hated to do it then find it oils the rest of the book :)
How do you get the oiliness out of it & how can you glue it given it has oil in it? Perhaps you would not glue it but only sew it?
I used too much oil in this video..you can get the same results with lotion too and it dries faster!
Mix media learning
This is amazing but I want to ask if it will make other papers oily that come in contact with it?
yes..less so if you let it dry for a while and dab it with an absorbant cloth. If I was putting it in a journal I would seal the page first with a sealant(mod podge or matte medium before gluing on the momigami piece. I have another video where I used lotion instead of oil..that is less messy 🙂Thanks for viewing Annette.
Did you draw the picture on the paper before you tried?
yes😀
Has anyone had the paper fabric begin to get smelly as the oil ages?
Not that I know of...or at least mine haven't
Yours came out beautiful. Someone's channel came up as a recommendation the other day and I liked it so I've been getting more recommendation and today Yours popped up and I'm glad it didn't 😊. I've done this with brown wrapping paper, glycerin and water for the leather look so now I'll try this. 😀
Well I am happy you found me Ann. I have a few "how to" videos you might be interested in. Hope you check them out. Thanks for viewing!
@@treemaidenart I will be checking you channel out can't wait to see what you got.
Just happened on your video , very interesting !! Love new art processes !! Thanx for sharing 🎉❤ oh watching from Martin, ga. USA!!
Very interesting! I was watching videos on faux batik using glue and acrylic paint on fabric, and this came up. I've never heard of momigami...the only way I'll remember that name is to think of mommy gummy. LOL I'm wondering if I can use this to make gift bags. I think I could, but they would be small bags. Or......maybe I could sew them together to make larger bags. Worth a try!!

You are correct. I have never heard of this lovely technique. I saw someone on What Not demonstrating this technique and searched Momigami and found you.
I actually did a how to make momigami paper. Ta da! There you were. I do mixed media books. Saw Foyles art on you tube she had marbled momigami paper she bought in New Zealand. So I was thinking I can make that...
K must have missed it, but at what point do you add the oil?
I do this on papers I have around my studio...you would have to wait until any paint is totally dry.
It just popped up as an option from another video, about reconstituting glue sticks! Interesting to me as I once used olive oil on butterflies cut out of tracing paper, colored with markers, this made them almost transparent! I used fine silver to make bodies (wrapped and twisted) and antennas! Thank you for sharing 🎉
you Mrs are so artistic and talented...I have been looking for this for ages then found you I'm stoked I found you who I followed for ages
Hi Carole..thanks so much for the kind words.
I saw this on someone's channel and lost it, so I did a Google search! Glad I found you! Thank you for posting. I liked and subscribed. I loved mixed media projects!
I’m from a junk journaling or mixed media group of peeps. I was recently watching other paper kneading videos and then yours was recommended to me. Great video TFS 😊
I'm so glad!
When you oil when can you use? I put my between paper towels to dab oil out of it.
Hi Vicky...I used far too much oil and it takes forever to be able to use it. I would use much less oil and let sit between sheets of paper towel for quite some time. Since doing this video I tried Momigami with lotion instead and found that much easier to work with so you might try that. Thanks for viewing Vicky
Beautiful. I've seen a few other youtubers showing this technique but your video was the most enjoyable. Thank you. ❤
Hello, I had watched a video that showed how to make Momigami, but wanted to know how others are making it. Thank you for sharing your creations.
Found this as I was trying to rewatch another video on momigami that I saw earlier today. From the land of mixed media.
You should hashtag #️⃣ craft words related to paper art. Also to draw attention to this very interesting style of art. You could call it “turning paper into cloth.” I think this is so cool. I’m glad I ran into it, because I paint. I thought to my self, hand painted paper into a beautiful dress. Thank you for sharing. I’ll be trying this ❤
I was interested in making a flexible yet sturdy bookmark, and had heard about making paper into fabric. When I did a RUclips search, I came up with your video. Thank you for sharing!
Does the oil go rancid after awhile? I love this technique. Thank you for sharing it as well as the history. It's fascinating.
Doesn't the oil turn rancid after a time?
2 years in and ok so far...I would suggest if you have concerns to try the hand lotion technique(same process)
