"Hey, Misthios!" -Assassins Creed:Odyssey.
Yup.
Always those random soldiers hiding in da forest😂😂
1:53 quite interesting considering how "the Sea Peoples" -some of which were undoubtedly of Mycenaean origin - had already established a tradition of raiding Levant, Egypt and Cyprus and fighting as mercenaries in such far away countries.
alot of historians believe most sea peoples came form crete and other greek islands
Good point. There is reason tô believe that greeks found employment as mercenáries in Egypt way back in the bronze age. And they were already raiders and pirates.
It sounds like he read this script into a school computer meanwhile his friends were occasionally trying to make him laugh.
Sky k I absolutely loved this video and learned a lot (about a subject I _thought_ I was well-read, lol). But I have to agree ... for some reason in this video (didn’t notice it in the other one I watched - Voyage of Hanno) it sounds like he’s about to crack up all the time. It was distracting, honestly, but a minor complaint in the scheme of things.
Got to the channel through Voices of the Past and subscribed. Love the choice of topics and about to see if you have a playlist for all your Phillip videos! Well-done and thanks for all _your_ work to make _me_ more knowledgeable! ;-)
my god man, how do you not have 500k subs? these videos are great, keep it up! one day you'll be able to make a career out of this
I know you got a life bro but I'm really feening for a new Philip II video
NothingToo Spiffy I feel you. Now I know I’m as reliable with release dates as Rockstar but November 24th is when I’m releasing my next video.
Last time I said 2 weeks 3 months ago but hoe damn has finding sources for Philip II has been so hard and I finally found a great source that gave me a lot of information to use for my next couple videos on him.
So, big if true, I plan on releasing 4 videos in the next 2 months. Two of which are Philip II videos
The 10k were NOT originally a multi-type unit army. They were entirely hoplites & part of a larger Persian force to begin with. During the retreat the formed units of slingers & cavalry due to necessity. That's a bad example of a whole merc army.
Awesome video!!! You're awesome. Honestly I can't wait for the next Philip episode tho
NothingToo Spiffy Yeah that’s the next one coming out. Just needed to clarify what mercenaries were in the context of the Greek world since they play a big part in events coming up
Archaia Istoria no worries man, great video

Coming out the woodworks with this one! Glad you're back 👏👏👏👍
Really appreciate this video. So often, when reading about ancient Greece, mercenary formations and commanders be mentioned but nothing is ever really said about them
My little boy is famous (-': thanks so much for the shoutout❤
Really happy to see this video up on Reddit. I've been following since episode two, always was just waiting for the channel to explode!
Thomas Sullivan Thanks man. However it’s probably going to take a bit more effort on my side with more frequent uploads and better mic quality to really get the ball rolling. Hopefully the next video comes sooner than usual!
Great video man. I subscribed. Love me some ancient Greeks.
Stefan Milo Thanks man, cool channel you’ve got! If you would be keen I’d be interested in doing a collaboration.
Archaia Istoria Yeah that'd be great. Are you on Twitter? Or Instagram? You can send me a message @historysmilo
Stefan Milo Nah not twitter or Instagram but feel free to send me an email archaiaistoriachannel@gmail.com
Great work ! Also Thessaly Calvary was famous in a lvl indirect even Chinese dynasties want it (Greco Chinese conflict around horses and tactics in the last Greek kingdom of antiquity)
So I am writing a sci-fi book set in a Hellenic Steam Punk world and I have to say your videos are extremely helpful with all the names for these jobs that I have been trying to literally make up on my own. Thank you so much for what you do, and I am glad to be a subscriber.
I’m glad that you’re learning something from my videos. What is your sci-fi book about?
Don't worry bro you will grow for sure you have quality content and sound very confident when you narrate and simple yet very good animations this channel will be big and I'm proud to be one of the first few hundred subs
You can't go wrong with Greek soldiers.
Greece has been having some financial problems these last few years. Maybe they need to start hiring out the Army. Now that the US is withdrawing from Syria maybe the Kurds can hire some Greeks to take up the slack. Increased spending from plunder sent back home can get the books balanced in just a few months.
@@Bacopa68 Despite the problems our GPD percent spending on the military budget is still at around 4.8 billion. I would say that it is pretty decent.
Πασχαλης Μπανδας P except his idea, I think, is that you should spend money to have a kick-butt military ... but spend others country’s 4.8 billion to pay for it 😁. I am sure there is a way to pitch it to my country - the US - will hire your whole army. Apparently we need to spend so much on the military that we can create a “defense” black hole from the deficit spending.
Brilliant!
I would love to see a video on the "second Greek colonization" during the Macedonian dynasties in the east. But yeah nice video I'll definitely subscribe.
I’ll cover those in due time with my main series
Love your Philip campaign, nobody else on youtube does it thats what makes you mad different, continue doing it because you are making your own mark compared to others heading straight into Alexander, and if you can make some type of short battle animation sequence so we could get in depth of more of whats going on

Really good video bro! Subbed.
Just discovered your channel and I've been watching everything lol. Love your vids so far!
Thanks, really appreciate it. Just glad to teach people some history in an entertaining way.
Didnt have a problem understanding you, from southwest usa.
Some people just don’t appreciate the Aussie accent
Seb Sandman I am kinda embarrassed now - I didn’t even notice it was an Aussie accent in either of his videos so far. Only that the Hanno video rocked and this video rocked but the “is he about to crack up laughing” in this one kept intruding. I probably watch/listen to too many history-related things, which seem to have a preponderance of British-accent-family speakers. 😂
Really liked this but found it hard to follow at times due to your accent. Any chance of subtitles for those of us who have English as a secund language?
mobeebus I’ll try and subtitle my video soon. I do have the script
Archaia Istoria thank you so much! Looking forward to more
mobeebus. The language he speaks is strine. He is a Greek Australian where strine is a southern dialect of English.
You can type perfect english but find it hard to listen to? lol
Although there is the subtitles tab you can click on. But theyre infamous for typos.
I just had to do a quick double take on this😂 not really making fun of you
@@8393Robertrex any accent that differs from a Standard American Accent, or perhaps Recieved Pronunciation, can be difficult for non-native speakers, and even native English speakers can easily run into English accents that give them trouble. It's true of any language, shift some vowels and drop some consonants you're expecting and familiar words become unintelligible.
Wow, interesting topic that I've never seen covered before. Proud to be Sub 849, keep up the good work! Woot!

epikouros means probably "support", not allied.
επι-κουρώ = to care. Exactly the same basic root with latin, but it's used in the context of "aid", so the ones that aid a main force.
Your cadence/voice modulation/inflection is most aggravating.
Unusual and very nicely done...a dynamic, creative and great vid!
Awesome, very cool, thank you guys for share.
Hey dude.. i watch a lot of history channels like yours..and im telling you... some age of emipre music ( tied to to each nation or aspect you cover) can go a long way and could help raise the amount of time in wich you can keep the viewer focused
AWSOME VIDEO, NEVER STOP
Really good commentary
Great video man!
Thanks a lot, audio isn’t so great though.
Thank you
Just stumbled upon this video. I really enjoyed it. Felt like I learnt a fair bit and liked the art style. Personally I'd slightly speed up your speaking. Very enjoyable anyway. Subscribed
Thanks for that, I actually have a terrible time mumbling irl, so I try and announce my words clearly but it comes out more slowly then too.

That wasn't double edge sword, that was four edged :D great video
At some point I should’ve just drawn General Grevious
Wow, never knew this.
Awesome!
Stop upspeaking at the end of statements. You are tellling us things. You are not asking us questions.
I’m not quite sure what you mean, I think this is just my accent hahaha
He's talking about the high inflection in your voice that happens at the end of a lot of your statements which gives the listeners mixed signals. High inflections are usually used at the end of questions when used correctly.
This is one of the videos I had open. Note his voice when he asks, "Did I forget to mention?" It goes from a normal pitch and rises to a higher one towards the end of the question (ignore the rest of the sentence he was asking and focus on just the question portion). Then notice his statements. It's pretty steady and avoids ending on a high note.
ruclips.net/video/8UNdFzs0iqg/видео.html
It's okay to use inflection but use it at the appropriate times. As Johnson said, you were making statements so end it on a similar note as the rest of the sentence rather than raising it which makes it sound like a question.
E-4 91H Ok I think I understand. I think this just has more to do with my kinda fudging the recording on this video and also how I record. I tend to try and take long takes so it sounds a bit smoother however it does mean I only have breath to speak with.
Can you hear it in my other videos or just this one, because I can then see if it’s fundamental problem or just how I recorded this one?
You don't do it in your previous videos, but they could do with speaking more clearly and confidently in general (Sorry no hate)
elitper994 Yeah no worries man, I appreciate the criticism. Better than a being surrounded by Yes Men. I’ll try and take this on board for the next video, do tell me if I fixed it.
Great work keep it up!
4:53 In "Kyrou Anavasis" (Cyrus´ Rise) is the 1st part of the story, where the Greeks help Cyrus, but he then dies. In the following "Kathodos ton Myrion" (The downcoming of the myriads, or simpler, the homecoming of the myriads) Xenophon writes about the difficult adventure back home...

GJ man keep it up
Anyone interesting in going for mercenaries job in Greece?
I'll do it!
Great series -- I really enjoyed it! The 'Cilicians' in the mp on 01.54 should be Lycians/Lukka or Luwians (depending on your perspective) though...
You are quite right. I think I should’ve written Carians instead
Ignore the Philistines who can not grasp your accent. Keep up the good work, Sir.
Bruh no xanthippus the spartan?!?!
Imagine workplace strikes here
small nitpick. 4:57.
Cyrus'' Ascent (Kyrou Anavasis) describes the march up to Babylon.
Descent of the myriads (Cathodos ton myrion) describes the march back to Greece.
In other words, war in the back-then-known-world was a greek affair, since Greeks were the most experienced soldiers of both sides of the conflict... No wonder it often ended favorably for Greece... ;-)
great content, you just got one more sub
but the pronunciation of the greek words is painful xD
I really tried to fix that with my latest video. Hopefully I’ll get better as I go
Greek soldiers: “Wait we can get paid for this shit?”
You didn't mention the Spartan mercenary general Xanthippus, who fought for Carthage against the Romans during the First Punic War.
Well I can’t mention every mercenary commander.
@@ArchaiaHistoria I understand. Good videos though. Thank you.
Cool voice, thank you for not shouting
Still waiting for the Philip series
Less of hero, more like the raiders is my enemy, but at least they raids my other enemy before me.
It’s funny how we think that Alexander was great for conquering the Persians. While his accomplishments are not to be scoffed at. I believe if he was the leader of any other people he would’ve failed.
The Greeks were well familiar with the Persian legal system and civilized enough to adopt them.
They were also known as great warriors even before the reforms of Phillip. That paired with those reforms made a unstoppable force. Being the best infantry force to exist untill the legions of Rome. And he had a abundant supply of great military minds to support him aswell.
He had the best shock cavalry in the world at his disposal too. As well as the best siege equipment and engineers.
I wonder if Phillip would have succeeded had he not died. Alexander's impetuousness was part of the reason he conquered Persia so quickly.
Alexander was a gifted tactician but if his troops weren't trained as well as they were, no he wouldn't have been able to conquer Persia. Without Alexander's tactics, leadership and training, would the Greeks be able to defeat Persia without Alexander, I don't think so. They were made for each other, Alexander grew up during the reforms and was trained to lead them from boyhood, hard to separate Alexander and him being Greek. With his education, up bringing and education, resources, yes I think he could raise a formidable army of non Greeks, he did use non Greek troops to crush a revolt. If he wasn't Greek then he just wouldn't be the same person so we can't speculate.
It wasn't just the Persians, there were numerous other nations and political entities (nomadic tribes, Indian kingdoms etc), some of which the Persians had failed to subjugate. Of course, you are right, ultimately he was just a man, and he was indeed leading a well organized, trained and equipped army, etc etc. However, we think that he was great because he never lost a battle in his life and conquered most of "the known world" at his time (i.e. known by people in the Mediterranean) in a bit over 10 years. He proved himself a tactical and strategic genius, fearless to a fault (had to be rescued several times on the front lines) and had amazing leadership skills: he could inspire his troops to keep fighting for more than 10 years, thousands of miles away from their homes, even after the stated mission of the campaign was accomplished. He could inspire them with gestures such as refusing to be the only one to drink water while his armies were thirsty when crossing the Bactrian desert. Keeping the ever-squabbling Greeks united under his banner was no easy task to boot. Finally, his conquests lead to a legacy of Hellenistic kingdoms in Egypt and Asia with very important cultural impact lasting for many centuries. Honestly, if he can't be called "great" then who can? I think that Carolus Magnus, Catherine the Great, Peter the Great, Frederik the Great, Sejong the Great etc can't hold a candle to him.
5:44 Macedon(ia) is weirdly outside the Macedonian kingdom!
Pella is in Greece. Alexander is Greek
Macedonia is based on the ottoman vilayet Macedonia, not on the actual kingdom. the ancient borders were different.
However, i think they have most of Paionia, who'd be Aiolians, i think.
His maps they suck in general.
@@aftastosk6016 also just noticed that cyrene isn't considered a greek colony, apparently. Either that or syracusae are somehow still part of a citystate.... + no northafrican colonies. maybe it's ment to be kind of a rough overview. just to give a general idea? seems to be focused on the late roman opposition.
He has a superficial knowlegde and understanding of the ancient hellenic world in general. It's not only in the maps and not only in this video. He doesn't understand of what he's talking about to the point that one can think that he maybe doesn't want to understand either. And his inaccuracies are varying from annoying to the point of insulting.
You constantly sound like youre about to start laughing histericaly and its sort of distracting but the content is good :)
Why don't you make a special video about xenophon's journey

An army
For that reason the war machine of Rome, beaten them. And also the war between the very old former comrades in arms of the great Alexander. And for Rome, it was a piece of cake to take entirely the Hellenistic world. In the fall of the
Roman Empire in the West, Rome repeated the same mistake as the Ancient Greeks or Hellas! 🤔
So everybody hired Greek hoplites. And none saw the problem with that.
What if a Greek king united all if Greece and went on a war of expansion.
Whoops that eventually happened. I mean could they not train an army core of local soldiers in hoplite style that wrre more loyal.
I dont understand why you talk like that, with awkward silences and big variations in your tone
As good as this is I'm very put out by the stupidly depicted dual pointed Xiphos as a two edged sword. All your depictions so far have been of two edged swords. What's with that ?

Your accent it catastrophe
Dude, stop trying to use greek words. You pornounce them the wrong way and it is really cringey.
Btw, μισθοφόρος doesn't mean wage earner. It means mercenary.
Γιάννης Νικολάου I don’t understand you.μισθός,is the wage or salary.φορος comes from the verb φέρω means I carry.he is the wage carrier or earner.in contradiction to the conscript state soldier of the day who in case of Athens ,was serving for two years in the army,in the frontier without pay.same as today in Greece.also all these swords for hire were paid by the taxes .and who was paying taxes .the average citizen of our estate.and in the Greek language φόρος is tax.so the soldier gets paid by the taxes of the citizens.
@@billkaroumbalis2310 Μισθοφόρος is used excludively for mercenary. The components of the word literaly mean wage bearer but the sum means mercenary.
