- This is a full guide to installing a manual gearbox in a 350Z (2003). I show how to remove all the auto parts, Install all the manual parts, and all the wiring (basic wiring) to be able to start the car.
If you get stuck or want extra help, leave a comment and I will try my best to get back to you.
WIRING - (Basic wiring) I show you how to wire the car so you are able to start the car without running the clutch safety switch. This is still using the auto wiring harness (5AT) and auto ECU. This wiring is for a 2003 350Z, you keep the speedo, but loose the reverse lights and cruise control.
WIRING GUIDE 2003 350Z:
Fuse box next to battery
Release the IPDM (Intelligent Power Distribution Module)
Go to plug E8
Cut pin 45 (Yellow with Red stripe, 2003 350Z)
Connect constant power to pin 45
WIRING IS DIFFERENT FOR OTHER YEARS.

Just want to say thanks for the video in the process of doing this right now definitely help out a lot
one of the best vids i've seen on this 👍Nice job!
Nice video, man! Brings back the fun memories of doing mine. I feel like the worst part was setting up the cameras to show people what the hell I was doing. Haha
I'm getting ready for this, thanks for the great video 👍
Thank you very much your work is very clean my car starts now🙏🏻
nice video man, really showed me alot thanks
I liked the "chopped" tag hanging from the garage door! Nice video bro, planning on doing this to my G35 Coupe soon
Great quality
deefffff using this as a cheat sheet
Great stuff brother! Really appreciate you documenting all the hard work. Have a V35/G35 coupe I'm looking to swap over. Guessing the fuse box wiring is pretty much the same, but will double check first. Any dash lights like a CEL or A/T Trans Check light on after the swap?
Yeah man they shoud be the same if its a 2003 with wiring in fuse box, as for lights on dash only got AT CHECK.
@@braydonkinnear Nice! Thnx for the reply. Really appreciate you sharing this with us. Best Manual swap vid out there for sure!
How did your swap go? I’m looking to do my 05 coupe this winter
@@NuclearPineapple im thinking about doing it in my 05, how was it?
@@wydsenna not bad at all
this is great stuff Braydon! i was looking for info for RHD and couldn't find anything under 'FAIRLADY' maybe you might want to change the title to add RHD or FAIRLADY so people can relate to your vid! Also who does the speedo work if nothing is plugged onto the transmission?
Yeah that is a good idea adding fairlady to the title probably will do that. the speedo. the speed works through the ABS sensors on the hubs.
Awesome video!! Did your speedometer still work afterwards?
Yeah man speedo still works fine
that blue z sounds nice man what resonator/muffler combo you running, if any?
Empire Performance, Headers, Test pipes, Y pipe and single exit exhaust.
Did your dash have any lights show up ? Just about to complete the swap and was curious if I’d run into anything like that?
Yes I got the Transmission light come up even when clearing codes it still stays as you havnt plugged anything in. Still runs and drives fine just got the light on dash
nice video, learned from your video and almost made it the end. I’m on the IPDM stage, my fuel pump works but no crank, did you have an issue like this?
Havnt heard about that problem before i know this replay is REALLY late sorry about that. hope you have got it running.
@@braydonkinnear hey bro got my issue didn’t align my flywheel to the sensor on the motor
@@stallionz88hi, my car also takes a long time to start and runs in emergency mode. There is an error code 0335 - crankshaft sensor, but replacing it will not solve the problem. did you manage to solve this?
@@lenashirpotreb8334was my flywheel misaligned with the sensor for me
I just can't get the damn transmission back in the car, IDK how you guys were able to get it done so easy.
Been stuck trying to get it installed for almost a full day at this point now, it just doesn't want to go in
Thats crazy. never heard of this problem before. can you see anything in the way? should be a easy fit.
What did you do about the neutral position switch underneath the transmission? I had no other connectors when trying to plugin that switch.
Nothing is plugged in to the manual transmission.
Hey man kinda late but do you have the part number of the copper bolt that goes on top to make the clutch pedal more stable
No I dont sorry mate.
Did the wiring set up u did also worked for yje reverse light
No the wiring is to just start the car.
What did you do about the connections from the transmission
I bought a cd09 transmission there’s like 2 connectors hanging out of it but they do not fit my connectors that were already in the car !!!!
I been driving around without them being plug does that affects anything and what are they for?
never plugged anything in to the gearbox. still works fine
did you do any wiring for your clutch pedal?
No wiring for the clutch pedal, that way I dont need to have clutch in to start.
How much did this roughly cost to do everything?
How did you keep the motor from spinning when installing the flywheel?
Have some one holding a socket on the main bolt on the harmonic balancer
Hey bro Can you make the conversation to my 350z where are you located?
How did you get the transmission dip stick tube out
There are the two bolts where it connects to the auto transmission and 1 bolt about half way at the back of the engine, it should be a 10mm.
Sweet Baby Jesus, how does anyone deal with the top dipstick bolt and top two bellhousing bolts? What specific tools did you use? I strongly suspect a different length extension (between the lengths I had in my toolbox) would have helped with the top dipstick bolt. I'm still trying to break the top bellhousing bolts loose - not much room to turn a wrench or swing a hammer but I've been tapping a box wrench with a 4lb hammer to no effect and I can't fit a cheater bar into the space.
Yes that was a pain. from memory i got it from the top as i could move the spanner more.
I know this was two years ago but I am thinking about doing the exact same thing with my car do you have to reprogram the ECU?
No you can still run the factory auto ECU fine.
Finished doing everything did the same wiring as you but doesn’t do anything when trying to start up what would be the problem?
Have you checked all fuses. I have never had a problem with mine. Same ECU and harness nothing has been changed
Does the crank sensor bolt back up or you dont need it ?
Bolts back up with no problems
hello i have RHD and im kind of stuck on the clutch line part, can i just buy the regular hard clutch lines because i don't know if it varies from LHD and RHD.
also the transmission mount. do i need to do modification for the automatic transmission mount to fit the manual transmission?.
thank you
yeah i just used factory hardlines. can always make your on if you have the tools. can use the factory manual gearbox mount or again make your on if you have the tools.
@braydonkinnear yes I'm going to make my own and the transmission mount i will cut the automatic transmission mount that i have.
Thanks
even if you do not replace the computer box will it work?
Yeah it will work fine. im still running the AUTO ECU.
Is the wirimg the same for american 350zeds
Im not to sure about that. you can just double check the wiring guide. i would say its the same.
Are there any dash lights from the swap?
Yeah you get a few lights as the ECU is not picking up the gearbox.
Will the wiring you did to bypass the clutch switch be the same for a 2003 g35 ?
Well since its an old video I assume was not getting any response, yea it did indeed work g35 has different color wire but its the same thing thanks good video !!
@@juanrafaelromero3487 Yeah sorry for late response dont check this account that much. I wouldn't now if it works with a G35. glade you where able to get it to work.
@@juanrafaelromero3487was ur grey/red ?
Mate im up to the wiring stage...plug E8 doest have pin 45.
Im in oz too, so wiring should be similar except mine is 2006.
Had a quick look. yes wiring diagrams show different. looks like Plug E7 pin 26 for transmission control module (AUTO) and if you want to wire the clutch safety switch will be Plug E7 pin 25. Please double check that all before you start wiring.
Did you eventually get the cruise control to work ?
No I sold the car and its now a drift car.
Did the swap in my sons car. Cranks but i dont hear the fuel pump
Maybe check all your fuses, Did you wire it the same way I have?
is there any chance the reverse light can be resurrected with still using the 5AT Ecu?
I haven't found anyway to get them to work. I know if you do wire then plug to the manual gearbox you get cruise control back, not 100% sure if you get reverse lights.
@Braydon Kinnear thank you for the reply Mr Braydon. I found this at a thread/forum. What's your opinion on this person approach on making the reverse light work? After watching your vid, i wanna do the swap my self. One of the best one out there
" It’s very simple! All you have to do is remove the reverse light relay located in the fuse box at the battery cover and jump the terminals and wire it to your transmission reverse switch. Get yourself a reverse connector for the transmission and solder the jumper wires. No need to worry for any blown fuse because once connected properly the reverse light will be operated by the switch in the trans."
@contact anonymous Sweet man glad you liked my video and thanks for looking into how to get the reverse lights working.
Where did you get all ur parts from? From a junkyard or parts car or somewhat new
I brought a wrecked car so everything was there.
Sup fashow
Is this Z right hand drive or sum?
Yeah mate right hand drive
Hi I have a question if I did it with the safety switch and I did it wrong would it stop it from priming the fuel?
When you turn the car to ACC with key the fuel should prime then, even if the clutch isnt pressed down. make check fuse or relay.
@@braydonkinnear I did check the relays and there all good and I changed the ipdm as well
@@edwinjimenez631 Thats very strange have you bench tested the fuel pump to make sure it still works.
@@braydonkinnear it’s a new fuel pump but when I use the multimeter it works on the fuel pump relay
I did the same conversation but I’m having problems when I get into neutral and my car start to die at soon as I get out of gear coming to a stop :( can anyone help please 🙏
Also when I turn on the car it idles normally but once it comes to a stop out of gear it’s try’s to stay alive and then falls down and turns off
Yeah true. haven't heard of them doing that before. only thing I can think of is plug a scan tool in see if any codes come up.
How do I get the check engine light to go away so I can pass inspection
Not sure on how to get check engine light out if its still a auto ECU will be freaking out as its not picking up the auto gearbox
@@braydonkinnear I just had someone tune the CAN communication code out
Will it still crank up if I use the manual harness & auto ecu ?
It should still work as long you wire up the clutch safety switch (press clutch down to start) or wiring constant power to pin 45 on plug E8 in the IPDM
@@braydonkinnear I appreciate you getting back to me definitely helped me on this manual swap ‼ I ended up using auto ecu / harness , car turns on but its alil jumpy and struggles to stay on and to get it to move I have to put the car in gear then start it could it be cam sensor ? Not letting me switch gears ? Or turning off when I change it to another gear ?
@@juniormorales3330 I have never had the problem or even heard of it doing that after a manual swap. Can you plug in a OBD reader and see if there is any codes coming up to help get the problem sorted.
I get codes p0011 & P0021 my friend and it's wierd I replace the solenoids and 3 cam sensors w oem also changed the pigtails to the cam sensors
@@juniormorales3330 The codes say valve timing solenoid. not sure how that would change when you do the manual swap.
It's not difficult to get it out manually ?
Na its a real simple job
@@braydonkinnear okay I have 350 automatic I like manual transmission
how did you do the handbrake?
What do you mean? you dont have to touch the handbrake.
@@braydonkinnear how did you convert the pedal e-brake to the handbrake
@@e.j.houston3565 there was no pedal e-brake just the handbrake
you would have to convert it for the foot brake, just the brake cable mounted to the side instead, look up some vids on it
Why does mine just crank start and shut off
Are you able to read the codes. See what its saying. have you done the wiring like I have?
I want to swap my car but I’m not sure how much it will be can you tell me how much you spent?
Hey I have done a video where i breakdown the cost and how I do it so cheap. ruclips.net/video/J6HhFCDVOSc/видео.html
Other wise it was $660AUD to get the car running.
does the cruise control work?
No it doesn't work when you change gearbox. you can change plug to make it work if you want.
@@braydonkinnear what plug would i have to change?
You will have to take the manual plug for the gearbox off the manual wiring harness, then cut and solder to fit where the auto plug for auto gearbox is on the auto wiring harness. it sounds confusing but is simple. There are a few forums on how to do it.
@@braydonkinnear okay thank you btw have you got the car tuned? and did they have any problems with the cruise control set like blinking with you then it on since i know you use cruise control button to switch maps
@@alexv350z9 no tune all stock ECU
Why do people upgrade the ecu?
Would only upgrade if they wanted cruise control to work.
Just sell your automatic 350z and buy a manual 350z. You just killed the resale value on the car and introduced many other problems
That car still drives perfect today with zero problems. Here in Western Australia manual 350z are around $18k and go up to about $25k. where autos are around $12k and max I have seen is $15K. I brought that silver 350z and a wrecked manual 350z both cost me under $7k
What you did is cool but at least in the USA. auto Matic and manual sell for 7-9k
@@Mrkevi123or maybe some people don't plan on selling a car they built so they don't care about "resale value" cause they're keeping it till the chassis done for. You sound like someone with soft ass hands
How did you get the transmission dip stick tube out
There are 2 bolts that connect it to the gearbox and one bolt half way at the back of the engine all are 10mm
