The dude that never made any mistakes, has no experience, making mistakes is how we learn, no one is born educated, keep up the great videos. Thank you.
With this vid title I was so worried for your part watching it. Stills sucks but so glad it's not a major issue and something broke. Can't wait to see it running!
I did the same thing on a 22RE a long time ago. I was soo pissed at myself. I just towed the truck over to a buddies shop and had him do it. I felt like a dumbass. Sometimes we rush ourselves when we are too comfortable...
Oooooh NOOOOO! That was such a huge mistake but thank you for posting it and not cutting it off and continued after actually replacing the head gasket & putting it back together pretending like it was all one perfect video with no mistakes. I always tell people, replace all freeze/core plugs. Yet I failed to do that on the cylinder heads for my 91 4Runner 4x4 3vze, manual drive. It happened to be that the rear freeze plug on the right hand cylinder head started leaking coolant after 3 months on the engine I rebuild my self. I swear, those freeze plugs looked fairly new, nice & shiny. It corroded into a pin hole from the inside out. Both heads came off. I repeated half the work all over again & those engines are such a pain on the ass to work on. So I feel for you bro. A very expensive mistake can also be made from recording the work process & talking at the same time. I decided to record my work & edit later adding voice instructions. I just have to put it all together in a neat edited version but I will include any mistakes I have done as well, like the freeze plug mistake I mentioned. Maybe one day I will have the courage to post it but under a different RUclips account name lol. I recorded the rebuild process on my 91 MIata engine; currently recording my 89 mustang 5.0 engine rebuild process. After that will be a rebuild for my 79 El Camino or an LS swap into it. I would first rebuild the LS motor first. But I still haven't had the time to edit or post anything.
Who made your adapter? I used the system that Jeff Kerr Acme Adapters package where I use a modified Toyota flywheel, disk, pressure plate and starter from the Toyota. The clutches are a lot more stout and less expensive than a VW assembly that will hold the power that these engines can make. I did have to design and make a clockable starter that fits the Toyota bellhousing and clears the VW exhaust and turbo setup.
I made the same mistake too when I built my first engine. Had the head gasket flipped and coolant ran down the side of the engine. We all screw up. Sh1t happens sometimes lol
I installed a head gasket bass akwards many moons ago.. didn't get as lucky as you, seized the camshaft, after some slick back yard machining and a few f bombs she went back together and ran fine for many years.
I was distracted and actually bolted a head down without a head gasket in it. Luckily I had cleaned up really well, so I just lifted the head 1/2 in and slid it in. And never had an issue haha!
Any one who does their own work has had a similar issue. I know I have, it’s worse when someone else does it. I had a shop push my truck off the rack into the parking lot with the trans out. Well the driveline was still connected to the axle and it twisted up in the wire harness, ripped it apart. I was pissed, shop was too lazy to pull drive line all the way. One of the very few times I had a shop do work. I learned to do it myself after that. Harness spliced back together, but it’s damaged.
ouch thats not fun. I made a worse mistake by putting a piston in backwards while building my bmw diesel. Had to take the head back off but fortunately the engine was still on the stand. I have no excuses. There were no distractions and i was taking my time. I spotted the problem while looking at pictures i took of the engine that night. It was an expensive metal head gasket and i reused it but put in another set of head bolts
Hey man I live in north Idaho and I’m getting ready to do my swap in a few months can I come by and check out yours? Also is there any reason you can’t use a beetle tdi as a donor vehicle? Thanks for the input
great job man, shit happens you had alot to do, its hard to remember everything and do everything 100% when you're legit doing soo much. engine looks incredible. you should get a oil pressure gauge for in the truck its nice to always be able to see pressure
Hey man any chance we could talk abit more in depth about this like what sort of wiring u had to do an all the little things u ran into? I’m hell interested in doing this swap I just wanna know abit more from someone who has done it, I have a 96 Toyota hilux space cab with a 22r motor cheers mate let me know if we can chat
Shit happens, you caught it and figured it out. Probably good that the parts are a couple days out, it will give you a break from it so you can get it done right with a clear head.
haha shit happens man! it happens to all of us :) we learn from silly mistakes. Can't wait to hear it start up. ps just a curious idea, what do you think about putting a PD130/150 (pump duse, individual electronic injectors) cylinder head on it? I read it has stronger internals, gives better fuel economy and will make the engine look so much cleaner. I don't know if the wiring harness is the same tho. It would be a cool idea to see you do that in the future :)
You always mess up when your in a hurry some way some how, you may not realize it at first but you will eventually. Famous quote from my old man. 😂 so far hes been right.
We all humans, we all do mistakes. Sometimes you have things on your mind and sometimes forget what you need to do. Still good content, waiting for more.
It happens, sucks but you caught it before you started it. Goes to show the purpose of being thorough and checking everything as you go. Attention to detail.

Enjoying your TDI videos. Have a 1.9 that I bought to put in a stretched Samurai. Appreciate your time and effort you put into making these.
Everything according to technical rules..and neat..and cleaned, nice jobs..video and music cool
Talk about cliffhangers! I know I've been the I'm sure most others have. Dont sweat it. But you had me so ready to see this thing fire
Don't let it get you down good fellow ,we all do it at times. hang in there ,you'll get it .
With this vid title I was so worried for your part watching it. Stills sucks but so glad it's not a major issue and something broke. Can't wait to see it running!
You ought to try Total Seal gappless top rings on a VW diesel, almost no blowby at light or heavy load.
You are way calmer than I would have been haha probably why I can’t work on project like this.
Phil Posada I have learned that when you get pissed off you usually break more shit 😂
Austin Niemela haha that’s good advice my friend
Volkswagen TDI ina Toyo. pickup..... mad xD! i love it

We all make mistakes and im not afraid to show everyone my screw ups!! haha the more you mess up the more you learn!
I'll do this one day. I've watched this a few times. I have a big old ute that needs a TDI. TDI the world, I say.

My adapter came from someone on Instagram I found!
Sorry to hear about that.
Badass build. I've done similar things. Stuff happens
I made the same mistake too when I built my first engine. Had the head gasket flipped and coolant ran down the side of the engine. We all screw up. Sh1t happens sometimes lol
Soon started the engine! Too wait see more.

greg h it happens! And pictures are so good to take along the way! I have caught many mistakes from looking at pictures after I finish something
If thats the biggest issue you have with the rebuild, everything is golden!
Fekillix we will see when it fires up haha I hope there’s nothing else 😬

Felicitaciones Austin👏👏👏👌 con cuanto HP quedó??? Yo tengo una 4runner v6 3vze con problemas de gasket 😢
At least you didn't crank it and wipe the bearings or the camshaft. It was actually a good thing you found it when you did.
TheKajunkat that’s what I’m thinking! If I did start it, it would have poured oil on the ground, I would have noticed that haha
That sucks! I'm so sorry..... Hang in there... You're so close .
Kustom '49 just a silly mistake haha
This trucks such a beast
great job man, shit happens you had alot to do, its hard to remember everything and do everything 100% when you're legit doing soo much. engine looks incredible. you should get a oil pressure gauge for in the truck its nice to always be able to see pressure
oTylerHD thanks!! I have a oil pressure gauge in the yota cluster!
@@austinniemela oh i see thats cool, love the swap i badly want to do the same
damn.

Ahh MAN, that blows!!
😕 wow man the head gasket deal is a bummer.
Heartbreaking mate. Nevertheless, looking great so far.

Should have been a Toyota diesel!!!!
