The cam shaft would make the biggest difference in egts when going full throttle, power wise the cam wont make much of a difference but becaude egts get lower u can out in more fuel and thats where u get power
Great content, great mod and important one , it is awesome to see how it is done , and curious about how different it feels and runs , anything that can smooth that alh sound is a good mod !
Those camshaft sprockets are also known to get brittle and develop micro fractures and cracks and then completely break, when I did a rebuild on my ALH bug a replaced it just to be safe.
I'm building almost the exact same motor for my 1966 Volvo 122 wagon. I'm using a 2002 ALH with nearly the same parts that you're using. I was going to wait to see if I wanted to go with the Frank 06 cam, but I can see putting it in now and not waiting. It looks like you're in SW Washington or NW Oregon. I'm in Sandy, Oregon and I'm taking the car to Sweden with me. I want something that has enough torque to pull a small camp trailer so I can haul the grandkids around Sweden on vacations. I just bought a farm over there and I decided to take my business back to Sweden where most of my family was from. It should be a really great time. Again, thanks for demonstrating what it is to do high quality work. We need to keep putting the example out for others to follow.
i just tore down the top end of my original 1.6Lidi. i installed a 1.9 MLS gasket, and cleaned and painted everything. the engine runs SO smooth! my build is coming along really good
@@fastinradfordable naw, im running compound turbos. Still messing with my secondary... right now, i have the factory 1.6 idi turbo as the primary, and a hx35 as the secondary. I do have a airesearch m11 t3 i could swap on instead of the hx35, if its too big and doesnt spool...
Bro I love how you build stuff because I'm the same way .... I cant enjoy what I've already done because new parts are already coming in hahahhahahahahah
Are those hydraulic followers or do you have to read them with a feeler gauge and then shim the cups to get them on the money? I really enjoy looking at your work. Your attention to detail is excellent. It is refreshing to watch. I've been building many different things over the last 50+ years and it is good to see that there are younger people coming up that take the time to learn a craft and have pride in their work. It all comes down to "intention and Attention." Once you know where you're headed you just pay attention to the little things and the work will lead you. Good job!
@@fastinradfordable yep and the engine looks like new inside. I've got a second alh with 250k miles and it makes the same sound. I use rotella t4. been thinking of changing oils to see if it makes a difference. Also changed out that pesky dmf at 74k miles with a smf because it was starting to chatter and make the engine vibrate
Other than being a kick ass build what is your goal for this rig is it going to be a crawler mudder what are you building this for you have made such great videos that i will be using yours for when i do this to my second gen runner when the 3.0 finally takes a shit
Are the lifters solid or hydraulic ? The stage 2 camshaft should help with power and torque. Does the new cam have a higher RPM band than the stock one ? Great job !
awesome man nice work on this build for sure the best and most detailed build around, you got any planes one day going to a 2265 or are you happy with the 1856? i have a 1752 and want to do my block before i get a 2269
@@austinniemela awesome good to know, im sure it doesnt lag asmuch as it could do to the load of the 4x4 and tires, i bet the lag with a 2260 would be annoying having to always high rev the truck
I was going to get a performance camshaft for my 400,000 mile Tdi swap. The stock cam was on sale from idparts.com for $120 including black top lifters. I could NOT justify trying to get 10hp from spending $500.
I'm finding this really hard to believe there isnt(or you havent mention I dont think) a clearance spec on those buckets/shims....I asked this way back when you were assembling this motor(no reply about it).....there has got to be a spec number....example,you do a valve job...nothing is as where it was.
That explains everything now....thanks for the reply.....video didnt really show what they actually looked like.....like I mean the thickness from a side and inside view....but all clarified now......I'm watching this and thinkin..how is there noise coming from that?....I understand now...good job
Also I finally sourced some wheels for my '89 Pickup. Went with 20x10 with -24 offset. Check these out: armedwheels.com/artillery-collection I'm getting the INFANTRY Gloss Black/Double Milled. What do you think of them?
Making me want a Mk4 TDI more and more. Just simplistic, easily modified, working machines.
Also, def looks like the PNW from the driving shots.
Do it bro

Cookie Tranquilo seems to run smoother and top end power seems better!
Owning a car with a quad camshaft setup.. I gotta say I’m kinda jealous 🤣 jk. Your truck is awesome man don’t ever stop 👏👏

Only ever seen that from people who use a hammer to remove the cam pulley, rather than a puller.

Love the build 💪🏻. If I ever worked in a white tank top. It’d be a new rag by the end of the day.

Thank you so much!! Yeah these are hydraulic lifters so no adjustment!
Do air ramp intake will pulled down your egt..worth to try
Air ramp intake? Is that like a normal cold air intake?
I have an alh with only 77k miles on it and it makes the lifter clacking sound on startup too so they probably made that sound when new
Um. Hope to god you have done the timing belt.
On that model includes removing the valve cover and inspecting the camshaft.

Im burning some coolant in my tdi and noticed I burn more in hotter day temperatures. Could that be a head gasket issue?
im also using g12 coolant

Jesus could be!! Or a leak

David McDuffie yes better top end performance. Lifters are hydraulic

Just had a robot try to sell me on a pair of toenail clippers by chomp'n up random wires in the add.. LMAO, Dead!

Did the cam reduce the black smoke ?

90% of the time its an exhaust leak that sounds like lifters.
Alh Tdi very rare to have exhaust leak.
Some people should not be making these videos , nothing is being tested right amateur !
What is not tested right?
