Good work fellas, look like you really know your s**t. As a committed BMW nut with an M57d30 tu2 i personally struggle to understand why anybody would throw loads of cash at any other diesel, especially a 4 cylinder.
@@DarksideDevelopments true but the m57 just delivers its torque in a lovely linear way and sounds decent (for a diesel). Mines only had a remap and the dpf gutted but it’s turbine like right through the Rev range. Properly tuned m57’s with all trick bits must be amazing.

@@JohanH1990kinda...I think it's more a matter of fuel flow...in diesels you only have a narrow window where you can inject the fuel efficiently, around 30 crank angle degrees. You can keep injecting later but the result is poor efficiency and thus soot and high exhaust temps

@@tomicelj9741 it's because they don't care about a bit of smoke when jumping on the throttle. It does get the turbo going a bit quicker. Adding a smoke map to make no smoke will probably limit engine response a bit
Nice work! However, I think that if the car is running less smoke it will be a better advertisement for Darkside (especially in Germany). Although I assume a bigger turbo (more air) would result in more turbo lag and a less drivable (and slower) track car?
I have one question. WHy is it that the torque on the diesel engine drops consistently from 3000rpm to 4500rpm. When I monitor the boost on vcds, the boost is constant 1 bar from 1500rpm to 4500rpm, so why is the power dropping, when we supply enough air all the time?

Hello Darkside crew. I am very much interested in this buid. From your previous video you said that the original gtd2060 is capable for ~300 HP. And now with a lot bigger turbo (gtd2872) you can't go past the 300 mark. There is enough fuel if not a bit too much. I am writing this from a positive stance and want to learn. What boost levels do you recommend max for the original gtd2060 and how much for the upgrade turbo? let's say at 3000 rpm and at 5000 rpm. Appreciate your reply.

@@1PotatoeMasher1 I get that they are a diesel tuner. By my username you will see that I also am interested in diesel's having done plenty of track days in tuned tdi's. Almost 20 years ago I had a MK2 golf with a MK4 TDI, 2 turbos, and over 220hp, so I know a bit about them. For a car that does lots and or road work and some track days then a diesel makes some sense. But not as a track based car that does some road work. For a track based car I have moved from diesel to petrol. It just makes sense. You can drop a turbo and injections, fmic on a 1.8t and make 300 hp with a map. Want more, then a set of rods and you can make 400hp. Want more, then pistons and valves. Traction is a serious issue at that point. Torque has less relevance on a big open track like the ring. Torque rules on the road and for rally's. Horses for courses.
We beat all the petrol cars in our class most of the time with less consumption and 'easier' to drive. But not to say petrol cars don't have their uses, maybe if all out power is your goal!

A diesel engine need a lot of air . Those filter will give but dsnt protect much its sad . The other thing is air inside engine bay get hot so density get lower . I have a air filter box that take air from fog light . I have air intake temperature around 20°c and outside temperature 16°c . This heat is from the box getting cook inside the engine bay
@@DarksideDevelopments I know . Iam connected on the ecu air box with a 80mm hose and 90 mm to the fog light plastic cap . The filter is 160x178 with a 100mm hole . Ecu hot air and outside mix was a concern but dsnt seems to do anything . I would have more idea to optimise density but I want to keep it budget and sleeper .

E46 is the only cool car with the m57 and it's WAY more expensive to build and maintain...and much heavier to boot.

Is it not as simple as running out off duty cycle? Seems like the injectors are spraying to long and therefore this show

Look at the relationship between power and torque.

Torque is calculated from hp so will always be equal at 5250rpm

did you measure the vacuum inside the airbox? this matters more than temperature

In the previous video they mentioned a run (break) in period and oil change before testing.
It was already run in but will get better if it keeps getting hammered for a bit, compressions are already 450+psi
Bunch of great articles and videos on misconceptions about break-ins and what happens to moving parts following full rebuilds.
