allow me to give you a tip. I do not use silicone gasket maker anymore (whenever it is possible) on machined surfaces i use Loctite 515, it is an anaerobic gasket maker up to .30mm gap. I found it to be better and lasts longer; the other benefit it has is that it does not oozes inwards, for example in water pumps, so it does not clogs up heater cores or radiator with silicone noodles.
I’ve always assembled head on block before completing the block assembly then just set everything to tdc I’m not a professional it just works for me and saves a little headache
Austin the videos you are doing are so valuable, as I’m getting ready to rebuild a ALH block as well. I appreciate you offer the information you’re giving. Thank you buddy!
I have enjoyed watching the build. I subscribed and gave it the thumbs up. I read the comment where someone couldn't appreciate the time and energy you have put into the truck.
I see maXspeedrods connecting rods but i didnt think they were made for the TDI. I only see ones for the 1.8 and 2.0 gas engines. Thank for the info, im planning an ALH as well now !
Is there not a spec for the buckets with the cam?...it looked like you are using the old buckets(people call them diff.names..just what I call them)..if there was a valve job done(be silly not to)...that spec changed and buckets would need to be changed or disassembly and cut valve tips to bring it back in spec.
Great video I have a question Alh without Tranny how to find tdc I put Piston tdc but crank has 3 small dots which dot is it first , second or third dot when it’s at tdc thanks
Slightly off topic, but have you had any problems with the brass in regards to the rear bumper? I am about done with my build but.......have some issues. Thanks.
Love your videos! I m doing one TDI enginebuild myself and I have a question about cylinderhead studs/nuts troque spec. You are not using original head bolts and there for not using original torque, but I didn't get from the video how much did you use to torque down cylinderhead?
Any particular reason you put assembly lube under the bearings in the rods and the block?? That just giving them more of a chance to spin like no doubt all over the bearing where to meeting the rod or the crank but underneath??
Looks great so far hope to see it finished .can I ask if possible that you can share specs on the front axle how or where did you get it from?. I hope i can do a awesome project like yours someday i got a 96 taco had it for 21 yrs . THANKS
Can you please tell me what the final cost on the rebuild? Ive been looking at Jaspers and a few other remans. But the prices are nuts. I was just wondering if it is much savings or if i should just do a plug and play. Im still undecided on the TDI or the 3.0 mercedes. Anyway love ur videos and if u can respond or maybe touch on it a little on your next video. Keep Em Comin..
awesome looks soo good, nice work. that pickup tube better be quick so we can see this running. did you port and polish you head? and whats the size of those pistons 80mm?
@@austinniemela nice shes gonna pull good and be better then a brand new motor. is that a colt cam?, why did you not port it? i ported and polished mine but it took like 10 hours of time on it
What engine code are the pistons you’re using? I notice they are Nural, but ALH, ASV, ARL? The crown looks a little thicker then the ALH pistons. Thanks

Jimmy V thanks!! I appreciate it👍
Really impressed with your vast knowledge and craftsmanship! Looking great...keep the vidja’s coming!!
Dave Phillips thanks I appreciate that!
You could probably make Basquettie with that little hand grinder.
soon it's time to start the engine! good jod, wait to see more.
Even though I’m not rebuilding a TDI your videos have been very helpful and the motor looks awesome!👍
Thanks 👍
I'm stoked about this love the attention to detail, as per usual! The Crank holder tool ROCKS.
Super high quality work man, love it!
Dude, sick built !! I had an F150 with a cummins 4BT .. I was considering doing that same swap into a mid 90s Toyota 4x4
Can’t wait to hear it run again
Good job man! I wish i could rebuild mine in my car but the tdis are so expensive! Looks good!!!

Looks very nice. good job. hope it runs as good as it looks.
I hope so too!!
Can't wait to be done looks so clean 🤙🇬🇺
Keep up the great work man. You by far have the best videos on RUclips
Ian Carroll thanks I appreciate that!! 👍
Vilen dank fur gut video!
Ooh...how I wish am capable of doing half the things you do with cars!

Looks good man
That's looking sweet!!
Must feel good to have a fresh engine 👌
Good content, as always
Excelente carro amigo me llega como lo vas dejando👍
no comprende.
Do you happen to know the part numbers/where you got the BRM Oil Pump Upgrade? Looking at doing this while I have the engine torn apart.
Nice work as always 🤘🏻

Hell yea man this is awesome
I’ve built 100s of engines but I’ve never seen the torch on a cylinder. What’s that for?
Any particular reason you put assembly lube under the bearings in the rods and the block?? That just giving them more of a chance to spin like no doubt all over the bearing where to meeting the rod or the crank but underneath??
Tallon Johnson I took the bearings out to make sure there is NO grease or oil on the backside, and I did not lube the backside of the bearings
Interesting stuff!

got a burrito thats been under the seat in my pickup since 1972. dont sweat the small stuff !!
great work pro, I hope one day we can crawl rocks together :D
Do you know if a vw tdi would fit where a 18r sists? Got a L40 tranny behind it. 83 Pickup just as it left japan as of now
Howd you coat the valve cover with non serviceable gasket?

I’m going to do a video of the cost once I add it all up!

oTylerHD stock cam, I may upgrade in the future!
Dammmmm, your meticulous !
Looking great.
Did you use new head studs when you reassembled the engine since they've been stretched already?
ARP studs can be reused if you dont exceed the torque spec
Beauty !!! Hey is it ok if I run a 1.9 tdi all day for ac?
I wouldnt! You risk glazing the cylinder walls if it idles too long!
Where and how did you learn how to do all this
Where did you buy the connecting rods? Are they original or forged pistons?
maxpeedingrods and ASV pistons!
@@austinniemela where can i get them?
What engine code are the pistons you’re using? I notice they are Nural, but ALH, ASV, ARL? The crown looks a little thicker then the ALH pistons. Thanks
These are ASV pistons!
Awesome thank you. So impressed with the knowledge you have of everything. Really enjoy watching you’re videos. Thanks again!!
@@terrydtdi thank you! Glad your enjoying them! 👍👍
Curious if you would recommend this swap for someone using no computer setup with a 2002 engine
I personally would always stay electronic!
I wonder what he set his ring gap to
What year of tdi did you use? What is the difference between the short and long block?
Jim Auto this is a 2000-2003 tdi from a jetta
@@austinniemela I have a 1998 beetle tdi, I believe the engine code is ALH. Not sure if there is a short block of the ALH... ?
Jim Auto yes I believe that’s the alh
diesel inline 6?
How much did that motor build cost?
Top 👍💪
What number engine is that, No.3?
2
What rods+pistons did u use??
Maxpeedingrods and ASV pistons!

what kind of rod bolts are those?
greg h arp rod bolts
what would you expect for HP?
Robert Powers shouldn’t be much different than before! I’m guessing 190hp and 375tq
perfect, easy on drive train, plenty of torque
That’s like putting a Pinto engine in a Acura NSX...🤣🤣🤣
How?!? With double the HP and 3X the torque id say its an upgrade. Not to mention 25+ MPG
You need to pick up one of the new digatal torque wrenches at harbor freight that does the torque angle for ya.
💪 💪 💪 👍 👍 👍 🇷🇺
🇵🇦👍👍👍👍🇵🇦🇵🇦🇵🇦
So dang board with this , sorry buddy your gone 😒
J Q what can I do better?
Haters gonna hate. Keep up the good work man.
Michael Morris thanks I appreciate it! I’m all ears for things I can improve on to keep y’all entertained 👍
Some people have a short attention span. Don't worry dude, your work is great, the other dude is simply at the wrong gig.
Stephen Jobe thank you!! 👍👍
