I do mold remediation and one of our clients turned their heat on as we were spraying yesterday, after we told them it would need to be off 24 hours. Since our machines make a lot of noise, we had no idea it was on. Till they come downstairs coughing and complaining that they have sore throats. At which point I asked "why in the world did you turn your heat on?" and they said "it was getting cold" lol. They wound up turning it off and leaving the home, but some people NEVER LISTEN!!

    Good on you Cory.
I have done over 900 mold inspections and remediation reports. And written a book chapter on mould bioserosolsa and have a doctorate in microbiology with a speciality in environmental mycology. This fellow has it precisely correct.
There is no industry with more shonky ripoff "remediators" using fear of microorganisms to cash in on folks impacted by mold. There are of course circumstances where a job might require active ventilation, isolation of the impacted area during remediation and/or structural remediation. But 80-90% of the time mold is discovered at home inspection during escrow period and everyone's utterly under pressure and freaked out the deal won't go through. That's where ripoff remediators often jump in.
If you have good instructions, with PPE you can buy at any Home Depot, you can remediate the vast majority of mold impacted materials yourself. Just be advised......mold comes from excess water/water vapor-condensation on (largely) cellulosic materials; paper, wood, dust, etc. One MUST mitigate the source of the water as well as remediate or you'll end up back where you started over time.

You would need a P100 particulate filter such as the magenta pancake discs or a combination cartridge with the magenta P100 prefilter on top (as written correctly in the annotation).

Actually, you don't know if it is "black mold" that is toxic without testing in a lab. Many types of mold are black in color. That does not mean you don't take the proper precautions. You should also have negative airflow systems to pull air out of the house in that same room. Just putting plastic over the vents is not enough.

I agree with you. The gentleman did a nice job showing how he got the mold off that wall. I would think a lot of this is common sense once youve learned what chemicals to use and when to use them. I think I would tackle a job like this if it were contained in one area but when the whole house and possibly the attic and wall insulation, well Im not sure about my doing all that. I may be in this very situation with a home that I want to purchase. It appears that the home is infested with mold. I need to find someone to give me an estimate to see if I can afford to take on all this. It looks as though most of the drywall has got to go and the attic insulation as well. Then Ive got to figure replacing everything back. I really like the home and yard. I just hope I can afford to take this project on and come out on top! Thanks for the video!

The fact is that hes doing it without full protection hes is using a correct filter but he needs a full mask and to tape his joints unless hes is running through a decontamination unit before doffing which i seriously doubt, he is going to be taking in enough spores from just that to cause health issues to himself or whoever he spends time around. Mold should never be done diy if you havent been trained in it. Kinda like oxyfuel welding its really simple but if you dont understand the details it is really easy to hurt yourself or someone else.
Edit just finished the video, he did not set up containment he did not bag the affected material. Thats sloppy, he spread all of those mold spores around and as soon as a really humid day occurs mold will take root all over that place. He literally did more harm than good in the long run. If this was Stachybotrys you could be causing anyone you see in the near future serious health effects mainly your family and anyone else that in the future will be occupying that room, you didnt remove mold you spread it.

  • @skcarpet
    @skcarpet 7 лет назад +14

The EPA should have told him to HEPA vacuum it first, because when you disturb it, it will shoot the spores into the air! If you disturb it with the vacuum the spores get sucked up and trapped into the vacuum. Also, If you spray it before you vac it, it will feel under attack and shoot the spores into the air so it can reproduce later. So you always have to HEPA vac it first if it's accessable. Then ideally spray it to kill it, then remove it. Also, just because it's black, it doesn't neccesarily mean it's the toxic black mold Stachybotrys. There are also other different colored molds that are very toxic. Also, you may get away with breathing some in for a while but it does also have a negative cumulative affect over time. I know of a few people that have tried to remodel homes that had heavy mold and died from not having the proper PPE (personal protection equipment). A tiny bit may not be harmful if you are not allergic and depending on the type of mold. At the minimum, wear a white paper mask with the two bands that hold it on, not the cheap single band ones, and make sure they are rated for mold! A suit and goggles is safest.

Good Video. You have actually gone through most of the NADCA VSMR processes. The most important part is to take precautions when re-mediating - for both your health and safety and the other occupants, especially if there are infants or elderly. Engineering controls are a must to avoid cross contamination.
To Monica - Never use a wire brush or any process that will score the surface. Use a HEPA vacuum and biocide. If the material organic and damaged, always remove it!

I thought it was nothing to worry about. I am originally from the USSR and what did I know about the dangers of it at the time in houses, I remember moldy food then but not in a house. I was aware of it in the 1970s but my younger brother took care of it. A few weeks later, I started to get sick, I coughed all the time, My breathing was hard. Wrong respirator cartridge, you took your mask off to talk, thus inhaling the spores. You have no air scrubbers running to remove the toxins as you work. The area is not quarantined, so the nearby spaces will be contaminated.
It is irresponsible to show videos like this to people. That is very likely Stachybotrys on that wall, and it produces deadly mycotoxins. It's not just the spores that you need to be concerned with. Stachbotrys produces tricothocene mycotoxins, which are extremely toxic to humans and animals. Mycotoxin exposure can result in immediate reactions as well as latent illness. You many not have gotten sick immediately, but years down the road, cancer, liver damage, etc., are possible. Stachybotrys is not the only mold that produces mycotoxins. Common allergens such as Aspergillus and Penicillium, among others also produce mycotoxins such as gliotoxins, aflatoxins, sterigmatocystin, mycophenolic acid, chaetoglobosins, etc. Tricothocenes are so toxic they have been used as chemical warfare agents.
Mold should be tested before remediation to determine it's type and whether or not it is in an active growth state. Remediation needs to be done by certified professionals, then the site is post tested to ensure the mold is gone.
I am certified and field-trained and also certified as Mycotoxin Environmental Specialist.
Don't play mold remediator or inspector. Seek out a Certified professional. Most states do NOT require training or certification in this field. Do you homework.

The majority of the black on the insulation is actually dirt. Fiberglass is inorganic like gypsum board (which is actually a mineral/rock based product held together with cement and paper much like concrete uses cement to initially bind the aggregate together) so it doesn't feed the mold. the paper on the baton strip, like drywall, is a food source for mold but the black on the insulation fiber is dirt trapped like a filter from air penetration from the outdoors.

A dehumidifier does not get rid of mold spores, it prevents mold from growing, an air scrubber or air purifier can get rid of mold spores to an extent, it's the spores that generally make people sick. If you stir up mold, they release mold spores in the air as a defense mechanism. Most, if not all, dehumidifiers do not contain a HEPA filter to capture mold spores.

White distilled vinegar and 3% hydrogen peroxide won't kill all types of mold, they do help with some types though. 3% hydrogen peroxide is usually too weak to kill mold at any capacity, you'll need 8-10%, and vinegar is more of a preventative not a killer.

Problem with mold is that there are hundreds of types, and only certain types are toxic to some people. Some people are not effected at all. Obviously the key is keep things dry and well ventilated.

The use of a HEPA vac and air scrubber was needed for this job, bare minimum. I appreciate the video, but this is not the best way to avoid spreading mold. You didn't claim it was though, but I think some people who watch this video are going to do this for their home with disastrous results.

After reading below - some of the comments - you must use the correct equipment, negative air and air scrubbing - be careful of some of the products used some of the products off-gas products are not used according to manufacturer recommendations and you try to shortcut the process. You can create new/additional problems - after mold removal. It is recommended third-party testing using non-generic products because the adhesives when doing nonviable testing may not be reliable - some of these products try to shortcut the time - which will give you a different result - remember the lab is not your third-party there only the processing center

@HowToHomeInsulation Not everyone will have a negative reaction to mold. Some people react only to certain molds. @assman778 is actually correct on the negative air comment. To do the work properly, you should have negative air or some kind of air scrubber on an open loop running while performing your work. You should also be using a HEPA vacuum to suck up any dirt/dust from removing the mold that would have fallen (a ShopVac would just throw the mold spores back into the air)

Does anyone watching this video know of a person who was killed by mold. Some people over react to just how bad "toxic" mold is. Mixing cleaning agents to clean the mold is more dangerous than the actual mold.

I do not know everything about mold but, watching this video and reading comments, I get this feeling of - something. Mold is spreading thanks to myths and ignorance. One cannot 'kill' mold; I've been in mold remediation for 20+ years and I did learn that much. Why we can't kill it? Cause... Let me not go into that, it's a large subject... Mold can be managed: yes, killed: no. Thanks to all, epa included, I was extremely buzzy. I know that nobody needs advice yet: here it comes. Don't pollute your place before learning, for real, what it has to be done and how? People looked at me, in amazement, when I would walk into their home and tell to them exactly: how they polluted big part of the house. First off; much more is needed than few instructions about safety suits... Mold is alive and all it needs to multiply is: certain temperature, humidity and a single spore. I really do think that it pays to contact 'professional' first, in order, do not pay dearly, later on. I've seen comments, here, from so called 'professionals', which do not make sense at all? Mold removal could be simple but: it is so far from being so simple...

@Kenzofeis right with eversharp, as i've discovered to my shock. I'm still in midst of the endless hell of cleaning from mold everywhere in the house. I've learned that it makes sense to locate furniture away from outer walls of house. In my case, the south wall proved bad because of huge maple trees too close to the house, undermining foundation & blocking sun. Mold's repelled by DRY wood, contact paper, paint. Mold likes SMOOTH wood. Even plastic walls inside spare frig (unplugged

      Look for a new place.
Landlord tenant law varies. Typically you would need to notify your landlord in writing of the problem and that gives them some time limit to fix it. If they don't, you might be able to hire someone to fix it and then duct the cost of that from your rent. But look for a new place while doing that, so you can move out when the landlord jacks up your rent (often illegal) for retribution.

A covenant of habitability applies in all 50 states. By mould (the correct spelling) I assume you are British. The USA does NOT have the same level of knowledge and science as Europe. As typical in the US, our insurance industry spent billions covering up the science until they could re-write their policies in early 2000.
If I were you, I'd move immediately, and beware of porous materials like clothing, bedding, couches, shoes, or anything that could absorb spores, mycotoxins and debris.
A mold occupant will become sensitized and these belongings will likely need to be replaced by the landlord -- who is 100% liable for leaking roofs or other structural water sources that contributed to mold growth.
You may also conduct air and surface samples and inspections prior to departure, and the landlord cannot stop you. Litigation is rough, try to settle for the price of damages.
I am not an expert, doctor, or lawyer.
Contact all of the above and consider documenting everything, vacating, and putting what affects you into storage until you and it can be tested.
      Oh, and ignore this video.

Sorry to hear that. You may have to move at least to another room, even if it is to sleep on the floor. The best would be to live elsewhere, heck even in a shed in the backyard, it might be cold but it would be ventilated, that might get their attention. You would sort of be camping .If you can afford your own place, move out, share an apartment, build your self a tiny home. RV's can be ok if they dont have leaks. I hope that you can get away from the house.

The dust in a mouldy home is quite thick, it is different than the dust in a normal home. Maybe you should consider taking pictures of your poster ans throw them away. If posters got mouldy, check the relative humidity in your home, heat and ventilate the rooms well if there no sighs of mold. Check the roof and basement for water infiltration.

In most cases, a professional mold remediation contractor is a scam artist! I sold a house last year and the inspector noted some mold in the attic space. The buyer called a mold specialist and, for $75 they got an estimate for $2500 which they promptly threw back at me to reduce the sale price. Yes, the mold was there but I had added soffit vents when I bought the house which stopped the accumulation of moisture and stopped the mold from growing. Mold was in the attic space with no air exchange with the interior of house so no mold spores in living space. Whole thing was a scam to me!

It also spreads very quickly if not treated. So let them know ASAP for your health and other members that live there.
