- What should you do if you find mold in your home? Is it time to freak out? Time to call a professional? Well, the answer, as always, is: "it depends." In this video I explain when you should call a professional vs when you should remediate mold yourself - and if you do decide to remediate it yourself, how do you go about it? There are some products that can help and I have listed them below. Please be sure to leave me a comment and tell me about your experience with mold remediation and how it turned out. Thanks for watching!

So good of you to make this video. If everyone knew what havoc mold can play with their health (as I am just learning) they would become mold detectives and extinguishers.
Thanks! I agree completely!
@@DIYwithDave, Does Concrobium deactivate mycotoxins?
@@sumeriansumer1622 there's only one sure solution to mold. MOVE.
Thank you so much for making this video. I have bad mold allergies, your recommendation for concrobrium was great and saying that it was non-toxic gave me relief. Thank you so much again, you provided me with so much value.
A good dehumidifier is always my weapon of choice for wet/flood related issues.. dries the affected area quickly..
Definitely
Have used Concrobium and also 5% white distilled vinegar and could not say which was more effective.
Last year when I entered the attic , I sweated a lot and I don't know whether it's the dust caused some allergic reaction ? the whooping cough didn't go away for 3 months. Now I realise may be I should have gone in with N95 mask.
I used Morrisons savers disinfectant and it cleared 2 year old black mold instantly. I rubbed it off using a green dish scourer pad. Then dried it with a towel.
After that, to stop it returning, I mixed a paste of white distilled vinegar and bicarbonate of soda and painted it on, and left it to dry.
But the cause (damp) must be addressed or it will return somewhere nearby. Prevention is better than cure.
Thank you for this awesome video and information, will use it asap!!.
I have a 10 indhold Moldova spot in a corner if our bedroom😳😱not good, but now I know how to treat it, thanks to you😀❤️🤗👍
You are awesome!!.
Thank you!!
Concrobium doesn't actually kill mold, it just forms a barrier over them to prevent them from spreading until the product wears off, which it will over time. It's not a bad product but it's better suited to spray on areas that have already been disinfected with a quaternary disinfectant/fungicide to encapsulate the roots.
Thank you so much for this video - very helpful!
I'm glad I could help!
Great content & delivery! Appreciate you!
Very helpful video! My renovated shower smells like mold. Room is more ventilated than before as an exhaust fan was added. Is there a way I can measure moisture in the tiled walls and tiled shower pan floor?
You can buy moisture meters, but they generally only work in wood and sheetrock. I would first check if it is the drain. That is an easy fix. If the new shower was installed properly, there should be no problems with mold.
@@DIYwithDave I appreciate your response! I’ll get a plumber too though there’s no visible water damage even downstairs below it. They had to tear up the shower pan tile twice to fix the slope so thought maybe the hot mop got damaged or that the walls weren’t properly insulated.
Very good video.
Does mold grow between the paint and sheetrock? My bathroom sometimes gets moldy discolorations (not dark in color) and anti-mold cleaners remove it. But I'm wondering if there is still unremoved mold (not just spores) under the paint.
Yes it can! Our roof had a leak and it leaked down the wall in the bathroom, and along the ceiling. The only way I knew was that the paint was bubbling up, and when I scraped that off there was mold on the drywall, under the "bubbled" paint. We still need to have that removed but are proscrastinating until we get the roof redone.
But if you never had a leak, the mold you're seeing might be all there is. Just watch out for that bubbling.
Concrobium is a mix of washing soda, baking soda, and TSP. Concentrations are around 1% I believe. I add borax to mine when I make it.
Hydro peroxide is also effective at killing mold, better then bleach and relatively safe to use.
I use gelair - it's active ingredient is tea tree oil
My apartment has mostly gray mold all over the walls and ceilings and it was due to me being away from the apartment for a few months. I had my windows closed but had a ceiling fan on but it wasn't on high. I'm located in a very humid area. Will zinsser mold killing primer work getting rid of the mold? I have used vinegar to try to get rid of the mold... spray it on wall and ceiling and wait an hour before scrubbing it with a bristle brush. In the areas with a good amount of gray mold, I was able to remove maybe 50% of it. It would then always come back. However, the big areas with a lot of gray mold which is throughout 2 rooms... I barely removed anything at all. Would this mold killing primer be all I need to remove the mold? So I just paint over the ceilings and walls and that is it? I have a ton of mold in these 2 rooms... apartment is just these 2 rooms. I heard you first need to kill the mold first... so that would mean spray vinegar on every ceiling and wall area with gray mold... then scrub all the areas... and even though the gray mold is still clearly visible... you then wait maybe an hour before you go and paint the wall and ceiling with this? The thing is I have a lot of gray mold throughout the ceiling and wall in one room... the other room it's mostly on the walls. The wall and ceiling is cinderblock or possibly concrete I believe. Can you give advice on this?
I have mold in my bathroom...a lot of it. I sprayed bleach. Straight bleach. It all went away, now I am going to paint with Kilz Mold and Mildew. I had to wait about a day for the bleach to dry. And I would definitely have ventilation and a mask of course. Bleach is STRONG! 😆 🤣 my eyes were burning! but the mold stains are gone.
Not sure if you already solved the issue but honestly bleach is really good at killing mold. The reason bleach gets criticized is because the active ingredient in bleach (sodium hypochlorite) degrades after about 24 hours so the surface you Spray will remain wet for longer than the bleach is active... Which is bad. So I always use a product called RMR-86 which is basically concentrated bleach first, then follow up with a quaternary disinfectant. I always recommend using a product called Fiberlock Shockwave. It kills literally everything. It's intended for water/flood damage and they even use it for crime scene/decomposing body clean up and decontamination. Another great product is Benefect Decon 30. I use pretty much all of them for different applications but they're all amazing at eliminating mold for good.
Monday is way better❤❤
Great video! Thank a lot 🍀
Thanks for watching!
I have treated some wood furniture for mold with vinegar and some window frames. I think the source was a vinyl record collection that had mold on the covers, suddenly it spread to the furniture nearby on the window frames. I have used concobrium on siding but not inside before except for wood floor planks in a small area. Will the vinegar prevent mold from coming back or do I need to use something like in concrobium on it and is that safe for my cats? I read that borax will also kill and prevent mold from coming back. I’m wondering if that would be safer than con chromium however, I don’t even know if the borax would be safe for my cats. I’m just wondering how long after you spray this stuff on, is it still a danger to pets? I also have asthma, and I’m wondering if it’s going to affect me too.
Everything is cleaned now pretty much that could be the records for all clean. The covers are thrown away, and the records are in a plastic container now. I have to do the same thing for some books on the bookshelves, the book shelves also had mold on the front and sides of the bookcase. I wonder if I need to use a mold bomb fogger for the there as well since one of the side tables near the couches also had mold on it. I can’t spray anything on the fabric on the couch is because I would be too dangerous I think. There’s no sign of mold on them. Anything that could be thrown away I threw away even if it didn’t have mold on it.
Borax is found naturally in soil and is a needed nutrient by humans. However in large quantities it is deadly, so keep your pets away from it. Use white vinegar on porous surfaces and let it sit. I did repeated sprays full strength, don't mix with water, for 2 days on wood beams. Had to take a wall apart, leaking A/C unit. Then I painted all the wooden 2.4's with mold prevention paint and put new drywall up. You can use and acid or a base to kill mold. Vinegar is an acid, bleach is a base however will not penetrate surfaces so only good on the tub.
I am in the same situation, did you locate an answer that helped?
White vinegar works
thanks for the good and helpful advice ... appreciated
Do you have to scrub the mold after spraying the control mold spray?
You should remove as much as you can before using the spray. If you end up wiping it after the spray, just make sure that you reapply so that it is evenly coated.
How long to let dry mixture?
People exhale large amounts of water up to a litre a day per person, without ventilation or a dehumidifier most homes will start developing mould on external walls purely by condensation, no leaks required. The cheapest solution is to open a window, failing that get some external ventilation pipes into every room you think might have a mould problem or most expensively, buy a dehumidifier but this will drive up your electricity bills.
Thank you great information 👍
My mold is in the duck works of my ac how can I get rid of that new ac is only 4 months old but duck works is 16 years and I'm in a rental
Your landlord is responsible for that not you as a tenant.
what did you do im having this problem now
@@Lynthari My Landlords don't care and will do bare minimum like just paint over the mold...
Thanks so much Dave - you're great!

What is the best mold remover?
So far I have read, white vinegar, bleach (if surface with no pores) Mold X, Hydrogen peroxide, and Concrobium Mold Control...
Pity live no windows or doors open ever which causes damp entrapment.
I've used Bleach or Alcohol to kill mold & it works pretty well.
Hi How you use it?
Thx
@@solemontana2137Never use bleach on mold.
pool bleach works great.
Africans just Do shit DIFFERENT ❤ Bro got a whole specialized song for his video and It's Flame and coordinates with the video 🎉
Correction: mold needs 3 things to grow, Food, Moisture, and Temperature, not oxygen.
Don’t believe me? Put some fruit in an air tight ziplock bag and watch what happens
Wet drywall doesnt necessarily HAVE to be removed. It can be dried in place with the roght equipment which can be rented at lowes and home depot. Drywall will actually be stronger once it gets wet and dries. Yes organic growth can happen but to say it has to be removed just isnt true. Ive been in the emergency restoration industry for many years. Also, microbium is 100% not the best chemical for mold. Get moldx.
What do you use to dry it? I do not want to start a drywall project 😂
Where’s your source on drywall being stronger after it drying. Do you have some peer reviewed study or is this just some knowledge you want to impart onto the world

What if you’re a renter?? I am temporarily living with an elderly family member. There is mold everywhere, floors, furniture, cushions…… he says it’s not mold and refuses to let the owners know terrified his rent will go up…..,
That is a health hazard, and the landlord by law is required to provide a healthy environment. You should absolutely call the landlord. There may also be renters orgs or law resources in your area as well that could help. If the landlord tries to raise your rent because of an unhealthy living environment that they are responsible for, then you have very good grounds for a lawsuit.
One question you need to ask, however, is what is the potential cause of the mold. Is it something wrong with the property, or is it something that you are doing? You may need to make a change on your end.
At the very least, take pictures to document it and get a de-humidifier to pull out moisture from the air and remediate what you can. If it really is everywhere, you may need to move for your own health.
@@DIYwithDave Thank you for responding!! It is not my apartment and the renter argued with me that isn’t mold….. I won’t continue to argue with him, I will stay until I find something. The apartment is very neat and clean but mold on all over. I do not know what caused it, the apt is old dated yet rent goes up yearly. I understand that being a senior is tough and terrifying when you collect SS and have a small budget yet I’m thinking of health issues. Quick question, what could be the reason renter caused the mold issue? I do know the Ac was working for a while landlord didn’t fix and renter had to buy 2 ac window units years back. . We reside in Florida
@pppaaattt4671 you have mold because you live in Florida ( let alone any leaks or hone issues )you need extra dehums no matter what. I lived in many places with extreme humidity, dehums and air purifiers like air dr seem to be the best. I am severely allergic to mold. Have been my whole life. So every place I move into I have to do some type of mold remediation. Every house. ♡♡ good luck ♡♡
@@truthismyreligion6391 Thanks for sharing. Im staying out of it at this point. I was willing to help but they became verbally abusive and told me to stay out of it.
If you don’t have a car to live in and you don’t want to sleep outside then Live in a hazmat suit or bubble, hope this helps
In your case, the contractor is 100% responsible for all repairs and all remediation to bring you whole. A large part of the cost of contractors in each specialty or general contracting, is a multitude of coverages of insurance - legitimate contractors. This is true for plumbing, electrical, etc. (General contractor here, specialized in roofing).
It's a shame that you failed to make this point.
Whoever gives advice to paint over it and sell the house is such a bad advice. Hope no one does this.
Yep thats just putting a bandage on cut and making someone else fix the problem
Yeah don't ever do this
Help,my landlady is 90 years old and that's what she told me to do what can I do doesn't have money but would like help. She is very gentle old lady helps others like myself please help.
@julianriveracarrera3344 your landlord is required to provide you a safe place to live regardless of her age, and mold is not safe. Keep in mind that oftentimes mold is a symptom of a larger water problem. There is a leak somewhere that needs to be addressed first before anything else happens. Your landlord needs to hire someone to identify and fix the problem first, and then you can look into what cosmetic changes need to be made.
@DIYwithDave well she doesn't have the money and my apartment is separate from hers but thank you she is a very very sweet and thoughtful person which someone in building maintenance school would help her out this ain't a apartment complex just five apartments and she is helping all of us I'm 69 her daughter is 67 we are old and a lady with two children who lost job so we will help her as much as we can she is taking care of us. But thank you if we could we would thanks 👍.
So... if there's mold inside a wall, I need to remove the sheetrock and scrub the 2x4s? Owch.
Sometimes if the sheetrock is just wet, and you can dry it out quick enough then it may not need to be removed, but if you have mold in the wall, then yes, definitely. Also, depending upon how extensive the damage is or how long it has been in place, then you may need to replace studs as well. Dry rot can damage them to a point where they are no longer structurally sound.
@@DIYwithDave Thank you for the quick response.
THANK YOU BROTHER. GREAT INFORMATION 👍 FATHER GOD BLESS YOU BROTHER IN JESUS NAME 🙏 🙌 ❤
AMEN 🙏
You completely ignore the problem of condensation as the cause of mold and in my opinion, this is the most frequent underlying cause. It would've been helpful if you had made some suggestions for eliminating condensation as a cause
I guess it depends. With me it is roof leaks around chimneys and pipes. Also water heater leaks even if you think your water heater can't be leaking as it is only five years old.
Dehumidifier for rooms. Otherwise check heating and cooling systems to see why so much condensate is being produced. Is the model over or undersized for the home?
whirly bird installation and removal of wood gusset plates is a good start
get a dehumidifier for sure!
But…You can’t see mold spores and mycotoxins in the air, and you absorb them through your skin. 😅 wear PPE
Bleach will aggravate the mold mycotoxins and those toxins are the real problem.
I don’t think our safety agencies in the US, UK, etc are up to date and/or transparent about mold and the health ramifications right now.
Just bleach the crap out of the mold, nothing is going to survive being coated with bleach
This is unfortunately not true, especially for porous surfaces. Hydrogen peroxide is a much more effective alternative and is also non-toxic. The higher percentage the better, but the 3% stuff you can get at any general store is fine too.
Some things like drywall will always need to be replaced, drywall with mold is never going to be safe to keep no matter how much of whatever cleaner you choose goes on it
Is this the same with lath plaster?
sometimes the wall section has to be removed because the integrity of the wall has been compromised especially if is soggy to the touch
Move
Good grief, less talk and more action.
GET TO THE POINT ! UGH half in zero about cleaning
just paint over it and sell the house
Terrible advice..
Karma’s is real, terrible advice!!
