All it Takes is One Great Night (Star Party)

  • I've recently returned from a memorable star party where amateur astronomers and astrophotographers unite to embrace the glory of an unspoiled night sky.
Although I brought my telescope, it was a small camera tracker and lens that collected my first ever image of the Rho Ophiuchi Cloud Complex.
Thank you to everyone that stopped by to say hello at the 2019 Cherry Springs Star Party!

Decades ago at the Grand Canyon Star party, I stared at Antares for over 10 minutes in exquisitely black skies and the surrounding star fields glimmered like diamonds, and the dark channels were easy to see. I felt as though I could discern color although I know it just my preconception. A memorable night among fellow stargazers and even David Levy was there. Star parties are great.

Wow - that is awesome!! I had an idea in my head that I could get those blues reds and yellows in one image with my Esprit 80. I had a go with my 760D and 18-50 kit lens but it just wasn't as sharp and as clear as me telescope. So last week I put my plan into action and accumulated 6.3 hrs of imaging over three nights (my longest yet) and spent most of Sunday learning how to stitch it into a panorama (I learnt a lot on Sunday!!) To be honest I was little disappointed with my final image but extremely satisfied that all of that planning and imaging actually produced something. I still have a lot to learn and as I write this I unpaused it at your image to hear you speaking to that gentleman about the colours and M4 and I am excited - I absolutely love this piece of our sky!!!!!!!!!!!! We are expecting our first significant rainfall here in Northampton, Western Australia over the next week which will suppress the dust and clear the sky coming into winter and am looking forward to doing it all over again. Thank you very much for sharing this inspiring video!

Great video and amazing image, Trevor! People do definitely care about your story in astrophotography, because you show so much enthusiasm and passion for the objects in the night sky. The same enthusiasm that made me decide to commit to purchasing my first deep sky rig. I don't remember if I discovered you or Chuck first, but I remember the "astronomy nerd smile" that you had in your videos that now I proudly show when sharing my deep sky images. Thank you, Trevor, and clear skies!

Hi, I’m what I’d figure is just an astronomy-enthusiast. Not even Amateur 😅 because I don’t have any equipment besides a cheap telescope I was given as a kid (22yr old now)
I was considering going to this event this year.
Is... this the sort of thing you can go to without equipment and just wander and ask to see what others are photographing? Or honestly, should I look for a more novice event. Don’t worry I won’t be turned off by a legit answer. I like your work. Just trying to get a feel for if the ten hour drive is worth while for me and two friends😅 or maybe you’d have recommendations for other events?

Trevor, you need to get out here to Oz...you haven't seen a dark sky until you come and see it, for real :). I've been in places that make Cherry Springs look like the middle of NYC as far as the darkness of the sky goes. If you ever get the chance to come out here, that's when your mind will get blown. When you see multiple shadows cast by the bright stars and the planets like Jupiter can ruin your night vision, that's when you realise how dark it can get.

There needs to be more of these here in Canada, we do have places with decent dark skies after all!
I'm planning to go do some camping up north in the coming weeks. The weather's been awful. We even had a tornado. Supposedly this coming weekend is going to be all clear. Will probably head out to my nice Bortle 2 spot just an hour drive away - I need to test out my new Hyperion 10mm
Supposedly there's a way to screw a dslr onto it ;)

Hey Trevor, beautiful shot. I would love to go there just to view the sky and learn from you guys. As a novice, I’m getting closer to making that jump from Orion binocs on a tripod to a true telescope. I need to learn the mechanics first and your tutorials are incredibly helpful. Trevor, question if you see this. I’m an avid long time naked eye stargazer, as well as looking for anamolies in the night skies most evenings. I’ve seen a few ufos in my life my first unforgettable massive stationery (mass sighting) while traveling through Hartford Ct circa 1980. My question to you and fellow star enthusiasts here is are you interested in them and have you spotted them and ever managed to capture an image. ? I’m in northwestern Vt way up in an unpolluted area near the Canadian border and see interesting things fairly often. The most curious of late are these tiny light flashes that flicker like the flash of a camera way high up among the stars. I don’t believe they’re iridium flares since they’re much smaller and they have no trails or trajectory. They’re tiny in scope and flash at random, sometimes I’ve seen two or three at a time in fact. I’ve been asking around online and others have seen what I’m referring to and it’s a mystery to them too. I wonder if anyone here has any insight to share. Happy stargazing 🔭Jane

No you will be very welcome, sadly too few among you have an interest. Approach anyone at a star party with a scope and they will talk your ear off, and will surely welcome you for a peak through the eyepiece.
