  • Julie Uhrman, founder and CEO of OUYA, participates in this keynote interview conducted by Joshua Topolsky, co-founder and founding editor in chief of the technology news network The Verge. Their discussion sparks an inspiring dialogue about the real-world challenges of crowdfunding, how open source approaches are disrupting traditional markets and how you can find startup success by daring to follow your dreams.
    Much more than a record-breaking Kickstarter darling, OUYA is the $99 free-to-play game console built on Android and designed by Yves Behar. It is slated for release in March 2013. Interviewing Uhrman is Joshua Topolsky, co-founder and founding editor in chief of the technology news network The Verge. Before launching The Verge in 2011, Topolsky was the editor in chief at Engadget. He regularly appears as the technology correspondent for NBC's Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.

    About SXSW:
    Started in 1987, South by Southwest (SXSW) is a set of film, interactive, and music festivals and conferences that take place early each year in mid-March in Austin, Texas. SXSW’s original goal was to create an event that would act as a tool for creative people and the companies they work with to develop their careers, to bring together people from a wide area to meet and share ideas. That continues to be the goal today whether it is music, film or interactive technologies.

    • @mattmolloy636
      @mattmolloy636 7 лет назад +66

      Hooligan Δ I don't know if she's actually a scam artists, because scam artists are able to devise some sort of plan and follow through with it. This OUYA disaster was directionless from the start. I think she's just a clueless mom who thought she knew the gaming world because her kids play mobile games, and she probably flipped through a copy of Money magazine and saw an article on how independent companies are making quick money. She seems like a lonely house wife that gets a real estate license because she's bored and will feel self-important if her name is on a business card, but has never sold a house. I mean she doesn't know shit about anything when it comes to videogames, and just genuinely seems like she's more infatuated with having the title of CEO instead of growing a thriving company. Considering the company took a fucking shit plunge, it'd be interesting to see what kinda golden parachute she had set for herself with her CEO departure...
      In short, I think she's talking a ton of bullshit because she genuinely doesn't know anything. Scam artists at least learn enough to keep their scam fresh. Bernie Madoff created fake market performance evaluation software to fool his clients, Jordan Belfort created fake company prospectus packages on the shell companies his team was pitching as being legit, and this woman isn't even aware that the product that she's talking about already exists in better forms on the market before OUYA was even a thought. I feel no sympathy for the idiots who didn't think about what they were doing with their money when they funded her Kickstarter.

      She never said anything about the US. She blatantly said "for the first time to the television", which technically IS wrong, since is was released in Japan in the early 90ies. The statement is absurd anyway, since anybody with a the slightest knowledge of video games knows that FF3 couldn't be released on anything else than on a television console. Sure, I get your point, but come on...you can't be the CEO of a console company and say bullshit like that xD

    Honestly, this keynote in general would’ve been greatly improved had she changed her marketing strategy. She kept talking about how Ouya was supposed to “save television gaming” when it literally wasn’t going anywhere.
    What she should’ve done was tout the Ouya as an open developer console for aspiring creators to make their own games on, without having to pass over licensing and paying ridiculously expensive SDK fees to big companies like Sony or Microsoft. It would’ve worked so much better for her.

    Poor Topolsky was so confused the whole time. At every chance, Julie kept stressing the fact that "the console market is declining," and Topolsky's like "What the hell are you even talking about? What _is_ OUYA? You're not even answering what I'm asking."
    Honestly, Julie should never have marketed OUYA to be a 're-emerging television console', and instead, market it as a developer's dream. Sure, it's under-powered as hell, but the idea was there. In a keynote she did in 2013, she made a good point about how the little guys don't have a good platform to develop games for. Sure, PS4 and XBOX allows people to develop for them, too, but we're talking expensive SDKs on an over saturated platform(s). OUYA could've been the clean slate, it could've been much more powerful (I mean, look at the Switch and it's size), and she could've directed the marketing toward inexpensive SDKs, and supporting indie developers. Oh well. Make it all about television, I guess.
