Second time watching. I’m 80. I didnt go to University until I was 39. I loved philosophy and chemistry. Got As. But listening- music is miraculous. It can make me cry. I’ve tried and apart from my right hand can’t play a note. The piano has gripped me since I was 3.

I’m a Muslim turned atheist. Both my sons are adults now who don’t believe in religion because it wasn’t imposed on them.
I still have moments where I think I have taken something from them but then I realise I gave something greater to them

I am Christian turned atheist and I have the same thoughts about my sons. They don’t believe in anything and often I feared I did withhold them the community and culture. But then what was that about?

I think afterlife was awesome, but I also think it needed a better director, I think with a proper director it would have been the best thing ever made.
Ricky has a degree in philosophy, a lot members of his family worked in retirement homes and is also a pretty smart guy. It makes sense it felt real.

Please consider do another one with Ricky from where you ended because many of his questions were also mine and I believe many other people and your analogies helped me a lot to understand some cosmological concepts a lot better . I'm a big fan of everything he does. Created The Office and his Netflix movies and stand up.
His wife Jane is a great sport as he makes he an international laughing stock, I think she said. They seem to have a lovely relationship. Ricky is a major animal lover. I like what he says about the dear doggies. Thanks so much for everything Ricky!

The last 10 minutes of this podcast has become my most favorite minutes on the internet for at least the past 5 years. A fantastic brain dump of physics with Ricky to represent me and the rest of the nuggets of the human race. I laughed and was delighted beyond reason.
I was in training as a missionary for the Church of the Later Day Saints. I had a disagreement with what our lesson was one day and I starting asking questions and using logic. Another boy started agreeing with me and asking questions also. Funny thing by the time I got home someone had spoken to my Grandmother and had told her that she should ask me if I really want to go to church anymore as they don’t mind that I stopped going. 😂

I adore science but that’s left my head spinning. I am 80. Doesn’t leave me a lot of time to learn more. I was a mature student at University majoring in Lit. only to find I liked Philosophy and Science more. There is so much to learn. First time I walked into the library I was overwhelmed at all the books.,, knowing I could never read them all.

Even though this podcast is a few years old and I’m only just seeing it now…I was transported to the same place and time by the sheer joy, enthusiasm, and enquiring conversation between these two fascinating people. I witnessed two middle aged men interacting like kids do when learning something new and loving it. Wonderfully entertaining. Since I retired, I have had time to research many things of interest including religion with my own mortality being 'closer' on my horizon. I am now indifferent to it and less likely to think there is a divine creator. I love listening to religious people they make me smile, intelligent people with high functioning science backgrounds handing their hat on blind faith...im loving these delightfully entertaining debates. Bob knew a thing Ricky!! As a builder he was properly grounded.

To this dumbass, it's ok to say that space, matter, time, and the laws of physics, ALL being there ALREADY with NO explanation of how, is OK to call "nothing". There, by that alone, Krauss excused himself of all of that. You simply come up with a childish snot-nosed brat excuse to call it "nothing".
But it gets worse, space, matter, time, and the laws of physics, called nothing, created more space, matter, and time. The laws of physics were broken to create more space, matter, and time. Keep in mind (for those that have a working mind), that this "nothing" was eternal, and just by chance about 13 billion years ago according to Krauss, then did its magic. The 1st and 2nd laws of thermodynamics were asleep then.

I like starting from the beginning because it shows how we got something to begin with. Not just that, it shows from the start who gave up their logic and who did not.
From all we know, creation HAD to be a supernatural event. The first logical and honest step is to admit that. The second step is to seek who or what did the supernatural event and the proof for that. Fools jump to 'who created god', 'god of the gaps', 'science does not deal with supernatural' and whatever excuse they can use to prevent them from seeing the truth. All they can do is fart smoke screens to avoid the issue at hand.
Those that deny it was a supernatural event, such a Krauss, Dawkins and a whole host of other fools, live in their fairytale of just making things up with nothing to back them. They say things so outrageous that they ask you to give up your common sense for science. Krauss and Dawkins go back and forth calling it "literally nothing" knowing it is something, and even their something can't produce what we have.

You can read Hawking, Krauss, Dawkins, and others who praise their gravity but they just made it up and have no idea where it could have come from. And the list goes on. All they have comes down to nothing.

After life was the most touching and human series I have seen in 53 years shuffling around the planet.
I thought if was excellent when I first watched it but as much as we got the message throughout the show that we are here for others too, the show did centre around one character. The others were there purely as a sounding board. If you look at sitcoms with real characters where the script centres around other people in the show not just the lead, we see where after life falls down.
Ricky is a very funny man but he’s extremely clever and logical

That was brilliant. I went to a religious boarding school 100 girls. 6 including me were aged 6-8 A new headmistress bought 6 little fun books and we all sat in the back row with her at church . During the sermon she would hand out these books which we loved. She was fired at the end of the year. She was the kindest, sweetest person. That was 70 years ago.

This podcast is very informative, educational, intelligently presented. In my family, I am an outcast because I don’t follow religion. Early in my personal research, read so many philosophical book, I came to the conclusion that I am An Atheist, with Agnosticism view. In my culture we believe there is a spirit and natural force that guides everything around us. I love both speakers equally and appreciate their work.
Another one of these conversations between these two extraordinary gentlemen, is long overdue.
Lawrence would be the kind of teacher to get me interested in science. I had so many snobby, condescending teachers who never created an environment where you felt safe to ask questions at the risk of sounding stupid. Great interview with mutual respect and understanding 💕
I was lucky enough to have two teachers that were inspirational, one inspired a love of debate and the English language, the other to always ask specific questions and not just believe everything you're told, an interesting tack given he was a teacher but he's right, the only stupid question is one left unasked.
I am a physicist. I defined physics as the simplest of sciences: This is why it can be put in mathematical form so easily. You can be snobby about it, but in the end, it is pretty ludicrous.
I remember as a kid wanting to be a physicist or a mathematician because it was easy: all yes or no answers....(Math especially). But I was not smart enough to be a mathematician. But I was reassured when I heard Terence Tao ( a man with a stratospheric IQ) saying basically the same thing. Psychology/history.etc... is simply too hard and you can easily find yourself BSing.
There is a small difference between men and women that makes it uncomfortable I believe for women to be a physicist. Women (or Asian for that matter, I live in Japan), are practical. So when you start a lecture by saying "neglect friction", which was Galileo's genius idea, many girls are perplexed and treated with contempt. Honestly, a world without friction is insane.
Boys tend to think:" Wow, let us see where that will lead us." We are more comfortable with what I call "Mental masturbation", playing pointlessly with ourselves intellectually".
I do not believe that one should change the curriculum. But we should be more aware of cultural differences that make physics difficult for Asians and also for women. Asians are good at technology but not in pure sciences.

I got to see Jane Goodall speak, she is amazing. She stayed and took pics with anyone who wanted to. There was a fairly long line, and she stayed until about midnight till' everyone was done. That was in 2014. Think she was about 78-79?
I work in the service industry, and one event I worked was a celebratory
party put on by the local Uni astronomy dept., to congratulate the Nobel Prize winners for the LIGO project. Kip Thorn, and
Rainer Weiss were there. (The third guy didn't make it). Weiss' energy was astounding. He was 80 something and he had the energy of an oh, so excited 22 year old. That's what I thought when I saw him speaking, joking around with Kip, etc.
The play, and sense of humour in that room were just wonderful.
There were several women there, a couple of them spoke who are a big part of the project. It was such a fun, and interesting party. I had a blast, and learned a little about the project.
There at least, I thought the women were represented fairly well. There were more there than I guess I assumed there would be.
If anyone can sneak into a Nobel Prize celebration like that one...I highly recommend it!

@@serpentines6356 Lucky you. As a physicist I was not overly impressed by the physics or even the math of LIGO. I was impressed by the engineering. If you simply raise the temperature of a 4000 m bar of iron (length of LIGO) by 0.1 C, you expect a 5 mm lengthening. They measured a change of length of LIGO of .000000000000000001 metre!
How in the world can this be done???!!! You fart next to LIGO and you probably produce more!
As for people, I judge everyone on his own merit. But obviously when you design lectures for a group--- Asians, women, Aborigenes, etc... you should take into account the target crowd.
I am not a Post-ModernistNOT AT ALL . Physics remains physics. But you cannot assume that the Western philosophical assumptions behind science are shared by Japanese for example. My Japanese colleagues were amazed to find that Western mathematicians, for example, believe that mathematics is discovered rather than invented..... This is why Asians are more interest in technology than science per se. Science for them is important because it has led to technology since the Renaissance.

Actually finding something might be more like striking gold than sitting back and waiting for a video to pop up in your suggested videos feed.
As someone who doesn't often delve into physics topics and the like, the discussion at the end was priceless. What I wouldn't give to have a regular podcast that is just a free form discussion between Lawrence and a guest on these topics. It was extremely thought provoking and informative.
Ricky is truly , one of a kind.
He’s a great teacher through comedy , & he’s someone who just seems to have an endless amount of knowledge.
An far , far more academic than most people realise.
And I’ve noticed that as I’ve grown up on his work.
Personally I grew up with things like , ‘The Ricky Gervais show’ , little Britain , doctor who…. Things of that nature , being British…😂
But, Ricky is one comic that’s always stood out too me , even when compared too the American comics , he just has this unparalleled flair that even they over there recognise.
He never wanted to do this…. And I think that always makes the best comic stories.
The person who doesn’t want to do it… and takes over the world when they do.
He was a writer , director first , and he fucking smashed it at that.
He literally had hit after hit , for YEARS…
And loads of that work , was script free….😂 which says a lot.
He has an eye for comedy & tv in general , and knows EXACTLY how to make literally everything & anything funny.
But he’s also just overly talented when it comes too a pen & paper.
He comes up with amazing content, and that content always has an extremely, extremely long shelf life.
I can’t count the amount of times I’ve rewatched the old pods with Ricky , Steve & Karl….😂
And he also created Afterlife… and again , he really showed how strong his writing & acting abilities were.
He definitely , without a doubt is one of the greatest comics to ever grace a mic or screen.
I definitely think he’s a top 3 or 5 for me personally.
One of those conversations where both are waiting for the other to stop so they can get on with their bit :-)

We've always known Krauss is brilliant. But who knew Gervais was, too? Okay, I lie. After watching a number of Gervais interviews, never mind "Invention of Lying" blowing me away, I was starting to get that picture. What a delight to revel in these two keen minds bouncing off one another! These men fill one with joyful hope for humanity.

I agree but there are other layers. e.g. art requires an audience. What does art mean to the audience... Good art causes a response in the audience. Art involves something between the artist and the audience as well. It's awesome stuff.

@@marinaweaver330 I did not previously think so but I am studying to be a primary/elementary school teacher and there's a prevail view (in Australia) that art requires an audience. What I like about this idea is that art has a meaning "between" people.
I also once had an international singing coach explain something really awesome to me about art: When the artist paints a picture so vivid that the audience can say, "I really get what the artist was conveying." this is a high level of art. However, the coach said that there is a higher level: "when the art is slightly less constrained, it leaves room for the audience interpretation and then you might have an audience member leave the performance wanting to -change their own lives' ". This was a higher level of art. I agree.

Romans 1:20 is referring to genes, DNA and the folding of proteins. Everybody always knew that there had to be something special about menstruation and sperm. It is invisible but we know it is there. Orgel's rules explain the divine nature. Ultimately you should read Romans 1:20 as a guide for you to stay factual and that we have no excuse if you do not learn the rules of nature.
Good starting point for you would be reading: "On the origin of species".

This episode is everything to me. As an atheist musician who loves comedy and science, I’d be hard pressed to find a more exciting pairing of people to listen to. I’m a huge fan of both Dr Krauss and Ricky Gervais. What a fun way to spend an hour and a half of my life! ... probably much more than that, actually. I intend to listen multiple times. There’s a lot to unpack in this single video.
Same... I listen to these kinds of podcasts softly in the lab, and sometimes whilst practising sight reading and technique.

I've read a couple of Mr. Krause's books. He can explain science pretty well but not as well as Richard Feynman. What I like is his ability to connect science to life. Ricky is coming to the answers from the other direction and he's just as intelligent. He's connecting the dots. Of the two, Ricky is more relatable because he doesn't take himself so seriously.
By the end of this video, I was thinking I never laughed out loud after watching an interview or a science lecture, brilliant stuff, thanks!
I was blown away when Ricky said he tried to imagine Infinity as a child and then imagined a wall and whats behind the wall. I had the very same thought process back in the early 1970s.

Real science says nothing does nothing. Real science says if there was something there already it must fit with the evidence of what we know. We know the 1LT says there's a conservation of energy. It can change forms and neither can be created or destroyed. Creation cannot happen by natural means. The 2LT has various aspects, one being the universe is winding down, entropy. Usable energy is becoming less usable, so at one point usable energy was at its max. This all points to a supernatural creation, by a supernatural creator at a certain point in which matter, space and time were created. When I read how it can happen otherwise, ALL the fools resort to science-fiction. Once a supernatural creation is accepted, then the next step is finding proof of what supernatural power did it.

My personal turning point was when I was 8 and I got told not to come back to a kids bible club because I "asked too many silly questions." At the time I was learning about Greek mythology and I could not understand how the story of Samson was a historical fact, but Hercules was just a myth.
