The thing that amazes me the most about Chomsky is his amazing capacity for recall i.e. his memory of detail is truly astounding especially at his age. He's a human encyclopedia.
This is how I felt for Christopher Hitchens as well. Always knew such an obscure piece of knowledge that seemed like it was going off on a tangent, but he would always have a profound point. Yeah but that's only part of the equation. Interviews with Chomsky only give Chomsky's view points. Nobody is there to break down his mistakes or add alternative facts counter to Chomsky's. The first question I'd like Chomsky to answer is, what gives anyone the right to run any country? That's in response to Chomsky's what gives America the right to interfere with another country? In Venezuela, for instance, what gives Maduro the right to control Venezuela? Instead of blaming Maduro for bad policies he blames America for interfering. How does Chomsky rectify Maduro's poor leadership? The answer seems to be let it fester.

This is an aside, but I’m so happy your sound engineer knows how to record Chomsky in his age. As a musician it can be so frustrating on other platforms to hear someone throw up a mic with standard settings on this wonderful but soft-spoken man. The noise floor and plosives shoot through the roof! Yes! SM7b with the highs rolled off! Ok I’m stopping my sound rant there.
@thomas thompson your compression and EQ settings will handle a great deal of the stuff Chris is referring to, but reverb and delay (used with restraint) are other basic tools you can use to give depth and body to a vocal mix. The straight signal from microphone to DAW isn't usually going to sound the way you'd like it to sound in its final form, especially with someone who has lots of vocal quirks (speaking of myself in particular, my voice tends to need de-essing, EQ-work to even out nasality, etc). And before you even get to recording, the gear you use and how you setup the gear in the room you're recording in is probably the most important aspect of a recording. The world of sound recording is so much fun and you'll never run out of things to learn!
@nmeunier Fear is a feeling, it does not need a sound justification. If people believe they are under attack, or will be attacked, they will behave that way, even if there is no real reason to believe. The people of Sparta were known to carry this sort of paranoia, as well. For example, they were reluctant to send their forces too far from home. Even when the risk was low and the reward was high, they were held back by this deep feeling that someone would come to take back this 'stolen' land. So they stayed home, always training and preparing for battle.

I agree that so many Chomsky videos and audios are poorly miked and lit and distantly framed. This is a pleasure to look at and listen to because the tech side is so well done. To have The Enterprise and Mr. Spock hovering in the background is icing on the cake. Bravo!
I've read the Ellsberg book Chomsky references at 1:46 and I highly recommend it. Also, the book by Scott Atran he refers to earlier is called Talking to the Enemy, also an amazing book, Atran went into places like Lebanon and the West Bank and talked to potential terrorists and the communities that support them and what he found was (as Chomsky alluded to) they were primarily motivated not by religion but by the same things that would motivate anyone: that their friends and loved ones had been murdered, maimed, and tortured by the US and US puppet forces. Another excellent book along the same lines is Dying to Win: The Logic of Suicide Terrorism by Robert Pape from the University of Chicago, very scholarly and dispassionate statistical analysis of terrorism and its causes. Interestingly, Pape's work was primarily supported by the DOD under Bush and Rumsfeld. I wonder what they thought of his results. Although, that's really not all that unusual, the DOD and the CIA often have a good understanding of what is really going on, it's just that those kinds of analysis (e.g., the Pentagon Papers) are meant for internal use not for the general public.
I think that's by design, because if you could actually hear what he's saying and then play it back years later, you would realize how vacuous and out of touch his ideas are.
Sooo happy so see and hear Lawrence again! And my beloved Chomsky as well! Wow, I'd say God's heard my prayers if there was one☻ Subscribing and looking forward to more from you🤗 Love ftom Russia x

Many thanks from Finland. Noam has always had my full attention & respect. Choosing to help humanity is absolutely beautiful. Some people are just fundamentally angelic ;) Best wishes!
I am, and I think the whole world should be infinitely grateful to Mr Chomsky for his decision to speak out for decades! His POV and commentary has been invaluable and inspirational to millions... I adore him, and thank you and him so much for this...
I used to put so many hours into these kinds of discussions, but since i've had such a massive fallout. The internet just appears as so much and with each moment the breadth of it all i have no idea what to put the attention into for developmental or practice sake.
I first heard the name Norm Chomsky from Leonard Bernstein Norton lecture. I had no clue what at first because for 4 lectures he relied on linguistic discovery to explain the musical phenomena, and the name of Norm Chomsky came up over and over. In his bio, Leonard Bernstein was really happy going back to give lecture at his old school and the lecture really took me off to learn how language and music are related. It was Norm and Lenny that started my interest in both linguistics and music.
Just a quick note to say that the Liberation Theology in Latin America was not acceptable to the official Catholic Church. Pope John Paul 11's tirade against one of the leaders in public attested to the Church's position. The cause of canonization of the nuns who were murdered by CIA backed forces have been ignored by the Church of Rome.
This interview made me realise something, people should keep a very good eye on what is happening. If I have to sum what Chomsky spoke-'Evil is very sneaky and deceptive.'
The thing that impresses me the most about Chomsky (and there are many things on that list) is his lack of cynicism. He never seems to despair of people. Even when talking of these same dreary old establishment stances against student protests (and we’re seeing it again right now actually) happen again and again and people still fall for it, he doesn’t get cynical and blame people. Most of us can’t do that. By the time we’re 30 we’ve decided the average person is pond life and just give up on politics. It’s a tremendous quality in a person to never really ‘get old’ in this way.
The sage speaks, and we mortals listen with awe for his deep humanism and clarity. Long live Chomsky and his honesty, intellectualism, and the courage to speak truth.
Noam is like a statue of intelligence. He sees history like it were a rainbow of shifting patterns, always changing but the same in its essential form. He knits together the nagging of the left with the oppression of the right and the resulting friction. He is calm like the center of a hurricane, throwing out words which make you at once say, "ahh, now I see the truth", and, "holy shit, we've got to do something about this." All the while he looks back at history, he predicts the future without even trying. In other words, some things never change.
I agree with other comments that this is one of the best interviews with Chomsky for a long time, and Chomsky gets his views across very well here. Lawrence's 'sympathetic slightly critical' interviewing approach brings out the best in Chomsky's style of discourse. He is challenged gently but not shouted down, cut off or interrupted allowing the depth and breadth of his views to emerge as well as their internal consistency and, I would say, logic.
also this interview is a gem. ive been trying to pace the incidences of my mindblownness, and its become increasingly hard for things to mindblow me that are not just pure academic lengthly research and "liturgy" (I wish i could understand turing's computational incompleteness paper but one go was definitely not enough.)...the pure candence that mr. chomsky speaks shows his confidence from his younger days, but also the depth and tidiness of his research (for example him reading airplane bombing records). and always have in mind the masses as well...
the Brazilian social media campaign stunned him and yet he thinks nothing of the Russian meddling in our elections. he's also dead wrong on Islamic terror. outside of these two issues I loved everything else he said and found him to be profoundly insightful.
I am at wow state when i listen to his discourses for many reasons. I am so greatful to see an intellectual speaking of matters and world wide events in mordern ways which help us understand social matters.
Srsly when did this interview happen? I need to know under which context this discussion was undertaken. Had the Ukraine thing come out? Had the removal of troops from Northern Syria occurred?
What a great talk. I notice at around 53:00 Noam talks about how people shelter their children from the outside world to protect them from overblown threats. And that we know the threats are overblown because the statistics are lowered on incidents like kidnappings, etc. But wouldn't the fact that children are all protected and sheltered be one of the main factors in bringing those statistics down in the first place? It's kind of like saying that you don't need to take a tetanus vaccine because nobody gets tetanus any more, but then the reason why nobody gets tetanus any more is because everyone takes the tetanus vaccine.
Let Noam talk! Anytime he was talking it seemed like you were trying to rush him so you could talk or change topics. Let things flow more naturally IMO. I like the really like your pod though and love Noam's views.
This makes me so sad. When we grew up all of us would leave every morning and hike and bike with no phones, our mom’s trusted us to come home when the streetlights came on.
Noam was asked what can be done, he responded that solutions were everywhere just not implemented. I don't want the dark ages again for my progeny, what is our pedagogy ? Yes, sincere appreciation for the wokeness of Noam. lawson
Thank you very much for this, definitely made me think about some things in different ways than i otherwise did. And to paraphrase, it’s better to have fought and lost than to have never fought at all
Questions: Where on the political spectrum would you place Chomsky and Krauss, and have you noticed anything about either of them that would align more with the political right? My limited exposure to them leaves me with the impression that Chomsky is more dependably leftwing than Krauss...is that accurate?
It's fascinating how they talk about how much the world has changed in the three years since that they last spoke and yet they don't even know what's coming in 2020. Going to check back in here in 2022 as I suspect that the change is going to be monumental. Keep safe out there people.
1:58:35 It's quite shocking that they're slashing funding to the sciences, historically there's never been a greater ally to facist/crypto-facist military regimes than the sciences.
Yolo Swaggins well now there’s a lot to dissect there. The Nazis loved SOME science. Other sciences, psychology and Nuclear science were dubbed “Jewish science”. Fascists only like technology so far as it advances their power, and sciences that they don’t like are cut and suppressed. Fascism is also inherently anti intellectual, Eco’s Ur-Fascism outlines this better than I can.
Is there anything that Noam Chomsky has not read and imbibed intellectually? A unique blend of knowledge and wisdom that is unsurpassed in my estimation.
Knowledge is not the same as wisdom: If Chomsky, ' reads and imbibes ', last season's pro football stats, then does that make Chomsky qualified to play or coach for an NFL team? See how ridiculous that reasoning is? 😂
31:12 also. most computer innovation is taking place on the linux platform today. Open source is the way to go if you want innovation. But that is of course not the goal.
Chomsky says the right should be allowed to speak and proved wrong in open debate, but free speech isn’t just to allow the other side to come round to your point of view. Free speech is to allow for the possibility that you, also, may be wrong.
Chomsky has an uncanny ability to look at the world objectively. An objective intellectual view is very unsettling to most people's subjective tribalistic view of the world. People accuse Chomsky of disloyalty for not being a blind follower not understanding that an objective view is important for looking out for ones best interests including that of their country.
@Will K - Politics/Culture One could easily argue that capitalism has killed many more people. Fascism and colonialism are capitalistic. The capitalistic early industrial revolution was responsible for working people to death. Chomsky points out the problems of all economic and political systems. I have attached a video that most socialists or communists would accuse him of attacking them. Chomsky may save capitalism from its' excesses. People's subjective bond to their ideology causes people to defend critical views which can be used for improvement. All economic systems operate within a political system. The present US trend of the last 40 years of increasing militarism and increasing power to wealthy people and their corporations will result in a backlash that could greatly damage the present system in the US IF it isn't curtailed before it is too late. ruclips.net/video/XkzygezS-Do/видео.html
Let's remember that Chomsky only APPEARS to be, ' objective ', because he has the great luxury of Hindsight-Hindsight which those whom he criticizes did NOT have at the time!
@@mck1972They could have foreseen both outcomes & the moral implications though. He’s being objective all the same and not trying to change facts to fit a fake narrative. Plus he’s been consistent all the way through. Your ONLY rider is weak and dismissive: for shame.
@christopherhamilton3621 LOL Unless you can show that Chomsky actually, ' foresaw ', anything himself-BEFORE it happened, then what you mistakenly call Chomsky's, ' objectivity ', and, ' consistency ', is in reality just his own worthless exploitation of 20/20 Hindsight about fields that he has never had the guts to actually work in himself-Which is everything outside Linguistics! And so it is You Yourself that is, ' weak ', and, ' shamed ', here, for not facing up to how my, ' narrative ', is 100% accurate! 😂😂😂
Chomsky references an article about how Trump controls the Republican Party in the New York Times at 42:52. Could someone link the article? I can't seem to find it. Thanks in advance.
Chomsky is the most important thinker of the 20th century and the first 20 years of the 21st. He is growing old but his mind is still sharper than most people in their 20s. He's absolutely correct about almost every subject and has an encyclopedic brain. He introduced me to Socialism and Anarchy at a young age and has read almost everything he has written. He should be the president but he is a leader, not a politician. The two are almost mutually exclusive. When he passes I will be very sad and lost.
I share the same sentiments with you. Chomsky can only be preserved by sharing his thoughts and works with the rest of the population. It amazes me that this video has very few views in comparison to the nonsense that plagues RUclips.
The thing that amazes me the most about Chomsky is his amazing capacity for recall i.e. his memory of detail is truly astounding especially at his age. He's a human encyclopedia.
I've noticed that as well. Just his riff on Emerson at the beginning, a subject which was in no way topical, shows this in action.

I don't think Mark Twain ever said this but still a great quote.
It's like poetry it rhymes --George Lucas
@@manueltripero He also supported Mao and his mass executions. The guy is an extremist crank to anyone who looks at his record.
I agree that so many Chomsky videos and audios are poorly miked and lit and distantly framed. This is a pleasure to look at and listen to because the tech side is so well done. To have The Enterprise and Mr. Spock hovering in the background is icing on the cake. Bravo!
Great podcast! I'm forever blown away by Noams knowledge. I'll be back!!! Thanks
Thank you Mr. Chomsky! Thank you Mr. Krauss!
Dr. Chomsky and Dr. Knauss
Michael D... you certainly are well read. Thx for the book suggestions.
Thank you for placing the microphone next to Chomsky's face, you can barely hear the guy in other interviews
Thats also a very good microphone
I think that's by design, because if you could actually hear what he's saying and then play it back years later, you would realize how vacuous and out of touch his ideas are.
@@SteveSmith-fh6br k

Sooo happy so see and hear Lawrence again! And my beloved Chomsky as well! Wow, I'd say God's heard my prayers if there was one☻ Subscribing and looking forward to more from you🤗 Love ftom Russia x

Many thanks from Finland. Noam has always had my full attention & respect. Choosing to help humanity is absolutely beautiful. Some people are just fundamentally angelic ;) Best wishes!
You both are among the best human minds! Thank you so much for this great conversation. Awakens human consciousness.
their has never been a more correct statement "I and literally millions of people thank you for what you've done"
This is literally gold even more then that. 2h+ of knowledge and wisdom in an overall insane, irrational emotional driven world
I am, and I think the whole world should be infinitely grateful to Mr Chomsky for his decision to speak out for decades!
Let curiosity be your guide, not a desire for self development or whatever illusion of progress

Thanks for doing these podcast Lawrence. You're doing amazing things for us idiots in the world and I'd like to say thank you on behalf of the world.
This man is the voice of reason. Love hearing him talk. He's so knowledgeable and what an amazing memory he has! We're so lucky to have him.
This interview made me realise something, people should keep a very good eye on what is happening. If I have to sum what Chomsky spoke-'Evil is very sneaky and deceptive.'
I don't think I have ever seen Chomsky smile or chuckle so much in an interview or talk before.
Noam's mind must be preserved by melding with AGI
Id love to hear Noam respond to this. Because while I don't even know what AGI is, AI does not exist.
You can almost hear Spock think; "this is a good time to be quiet"

I always feel cleansed mentally when I listen to Professor Chomsky..........total voice of truth
The sage speaks, and we mortals listen with awe for his deep humanism and clarity. Long live Chomsky and his honesty, intellectualism, and the courage to speak truth.
I don't like how the interviewer keeps cutting off Noam when he is making a point. Several times I wanted to hear what Noam was trying to say.
its a conversation.. and went the other way more often than not
Noam is like a statue of intelligence.
Can you pls cite a specific example where he has accurately predicted a future event, in detail, in advance?
I am impressed by Dr. Krauss' deference to Prof.Chomsky. Mentor and Protege. As one of the latter, I appreciate this stirring exchange.
So glad this is a new interview and not a re-upload of the old one!
When are you bringing Zizek on? hahaha
Lol, Chomsky said Zizek is incoherent.
Yes!! Ive miss hearing your brilliant thoughts. Looking forward to watching every episode you post!
Thanks for all you've done and are still doing Chomsky
I agree with other comments that this is one of the best interviews with Chomsky for a long time, and Chomsky gets his views across very well here. Lawrence's 'sympathetic slightly critical' interviewing approach brings out the best in Chomsky's style of discourse. He is challenged gently but not shouted down, cut off or interrupted allowing the depth and breadth of his views to emerge as well as their internal consistency and, I would say, logic.
Thanks Lawrence and Noam for the early Christmas present
also this interview is a gem. ive been trying to pace the incidences of my mindblownness, and its become increasingly hard for things to mindblow me that are not just pure academic lengthly research and "liturgy" (I wish i could understand turing's computational incompleteness paper but one go was definitely not enough.)...the pure candence that mr. chomsky speaks shows his confidence from his younger days, but also the depth and tidiness of his research (for example him reading airplane bombing records). and always have in mind the masses as well...

the Brazilian social media campaign stunned him and yet he thinks nothing of the Russian meddling in our elections. he's also dead wrong on Islamic terror. outside of these two issues I loved everything else he said and found him to be profoundly insightful.
Because as he said the elections are pretty much for sale. Any country can meddle in USA elections by donating money thorugh corporations

I believe it was about six months ago.
Agree. Kraus talks too much about himself. Still, thanks for these discussions.
Ahh this channel is way too good! I cant get enough. It may be time to bring Dr. Chomsky back!
More of this, please.
We need to gain as much knowledge from Noam while he's still available. No single human has affected my politics to a greater degree.

Questions: Where on the political spectrum would you place Chomsky and Krauss, and have you noticed anything about either of them that would align more with the political right?
My limited exposure to them leaves me with the impression that Chomsky is more dependably leftwing than Krauss...is that accurate?
Yes it’s accurate and they’re both definitely leftist.
Chomsky is so well-spoken if you slow down the speed, he doesn't sound drunk. He just sounds like Chomsky!
(C'mon Noam! Allegro!)
It's fascinating how they talk about how much the world has changed in the three years since that they last spoke and yet they don't even know what's coming in 2020. Going to check back in here in 2022 as I suspect that the change is going to be monumental. Keep safe out there people.
These wise men are talking with great humility and truths. They are the truest human beings. It makes me want to cry just to witness their existence.
These episodes with Chomsky are one of the best, thank you for having him on.
"when mythology is inconveniently unadaptable to everyday life"
1:58:35 It's quite shocking that they're slashing funding to the sciences, historically there's never been a greater ally to facist/crypto-facist military regimes than the sciences.
That's a bit misleading
Yolo Swaggins well now there’s a lot to dissect there. The Nazis loved SOME science. Other sciences, psychology and Nuclear science were dubbed “Jewish science”. Fascists only like technology so far as it advances their power, and sciences that they don’t like are cut and suppressed. Fascism is also inherently anti intellectual, Eco’s Ur-Fascism outlines this better than I can.
Absolutely fascinating discussion. Chomsky's smile in the end is precious.
It's good to hear some concrete details of our sorted past. Helps us stay grounded.
I am getting PTSD from this intro. This video has been the autoplay video that plays itself for about 40 times now. How do I stop it?
Is there anything that Noam Chomsky has not read and imbibed intellectually? A unique blend of knowledge and wisdom that is unsurpassed in my estimation.
Knowledge is not the same as wisdom:
If Chomsky, ' reads and imbibes ', last season's pro football stats, then does that make Chomsky qualified to play or coach for an NFL team?
See how ridiculous that reasoning is? 😂

@Enter the Bragn’ was that some new age sarcasm ? not sure what you're tryin' there
Chomsky says the right should be allowed to speak and proved wrong in open debate, but free speech isn’t just to allow the other side to come round to your point of view.
Bob S yeah those people are idiots
@christopherhamilton3621
LOL Unless you can show that Chomsky actually, ' foresaw ', anything himself-BEFORE it happened, then what you mistakenly call Chomsky's, ' objectivity ', and, ' consistency ', is in reality just his own worthless exploitation of 20/20 Hindsight about fields that he has never had the guts to actually work in himself-Which is everything outside Linguistics!
And so it is You Yourself that is, ' weak ', and, ' shamed ', here, for not facing up to how my, ' narrative ', is 100% accurate! 😂😂😂
his words can be so severe. feeling his despair.

MY TWO FAVORITE GUYS IN THE WORLD! NOAM AND LAWRENCE
