  • The idea of a $99, crowd funded, open source gaming console might have seemed absurd a few short years ago, but that just goes to show how things have changed. Launching last week on Kickstarter, Ouya quickly set the record for the most money raised in the first 24 hours on that site. Now over five million dollars, Ouya seems destined to become the largest Kickstarter project so far. IGDA board member and Xbox co-founder Ed Fries will interview Julie about her company and the opportunities and challenges they face in the months ahead.
Delivered at the IGDA Summit @ Casual Connect Seattle, July 2012

I don't mean to be a naysayer as I feel the idea of a small upstart challenging the "Big 3" is way overdue but I'm really not clear on how the Ouya differs from any one a thousand Android TV boxes already on the market. I just ordered one with Ice Cream Sandwich, comparable specs, 1080p support (even included an HDMI cable); picked up a wireless keyboard/ controller (with touch-pad) all for $80. Aside from Jellybean, am I missing any other benefits with the Ouya?

I really don't like how she responded to malware or worse IDENTITY THEFT, my credit card number better be treated with the utmost discretion I don't want these open developers having full access to my card numbers they should be handled exclusively by OUYA and no one else.

Interesting part about Nintendo's controllers being the opposite of Xbox- when really, the Xbox is opposite of the layout since this layout has existed since the SNES.

  • @Afurown

My prediction is that many crappy games and copyrighted ideas will eventually pollute the OUYA until the idea falls apart.
Games need a wall for developers to climb over so that every idiot in the world doesn't wander into that territory.

On my fun road down watching Ouya videos, this comment made back during the launch sums up everything. It's blatant that it was an underpowered android device that you couldn't take with you anywhere. It was the worst of both worlds, mobile games are fun cause you can play them anywhere and console games are able to be great because of the power of the hardware. But the overall flaw was the oversaturation of crap games made by anyone. No one is gonna want to buy it if the games suck. There is no reason to own a console aside from the games. Why else would you buy a video game console other than to play good games?

9 years later and obviously no one bought this ridiculous thing for 99$ cause you could easily connect almost all your Android devices via Bluetooth...and obviously no one was truly interested in developing games for this thing cause it was as powerful as a potato...

  • @VideoGamingReporter

You are absolutely right, after having spent some time with the developer kit; this is set up to be a game playing console first and foremost (unlike most TV boxes, which are essentially Android running mini PCs). Ouya is definitely taking a different approach than I initially expected. Will be interesting to observe how GameStick and Esfere compare.

it's absurd how he's comparing XBox to OUYA -- saying that OUYA doesn't have $5 billion to spend on distribution is like saying "but a mouse weighs only 5 ounces, how can it possibly be more agile than an elephant?"

maybe she should make a special credit card that you can buy at your local store that has credits and buy can buy different cards each with different amount. like maybe buy $100.00 worth of credit this way you don't have to put your real CC on the line. kinda like xbox live where you buy points cards and wii.

OUYA is extrapolating it's early success as why it will be good. I really hope that this turns out well though, otherwise it will end up crushed in a desert somewhere.

This is good good. I'm honestly not a big gamer outside of console gamers and MMORPGs. But I am getting this console for my cousin because he's not as biased as me. I wanna get him a console where he can play more games and a better variety. That's the issue with today's market. Not enough games. And most tablets are well over 200 dollars.

For you it seems absurd, I mean, look, now Android is one of the OSs most used in the world (not iOS), so is actually a good idea of making an Android Gaming Console (actually nobody makes you buy it), and hear to her... She says that this console is perfect for devs, because basically this console is the result of everyone's work, so if you think is shit, ok, it's your opinion, but for me being an dev, I think this is a really good idea,so...

Part of the problem with this console is that gamers, and people in general, are very ungrateful these days. There is a MORE, MORE, MORE mentality about today's generation. That is a big part of the reason this system will fail. People expect too much and are not willing to give new systems a chance. The Wii U and Vita are both failing also. People are only looking forward to the next Call of Duty or game with super HD graphics blah blah ultra realistic bullshit games.
