1:30 "German tool" seems to be a torx bit, like T-9 or T-10? Uhm. Them be designed in the US, albeit with the rational sense of using metric (millimeters) for size intervals.
Thank you. You gave me all I needed to sold my issue. Just one thing. I used a right angle drill and removed 2 screws to remove instrument cluster. DONT melt it out of your way.
Excellent video, without which I could not have done this job. Much thanks. Although I have a few helpful comments for others. 20 seconds - A tool short enough to come in perpendicular to the steering wheel makes this easier. That long screwdriver has to come in at an angle because of the gauge cluster. I used a spade drill bit, which has a nice sharp point to work into the slot above the clip and a nice large flat spot to press down on. 43 seconds - I was only able to get the clock spring off after I’d removed the electronic unit under the steering column since it is plugged into it. So wait on this. He kind of explains how they fit together at 1:03. 1:20 - It is easiest to access this machine screw if the steering wheel is tilted all the way up and the tilt steering lever in the unlocked position. Watch carefully from about 2:03 to 2:12 to see where those two tabs are. The back one is easiest to find, and makes it easier to know when you hit the front one if the back is already unclipped. So unclip the back one first. The front one can be accessed by inserting an ice-pick type tool directly under the ignition lock cylinder and angle the tip slightly toward the back of the car and feel around for that clip. 2:42 - drilling out these bolts is easiest done with the tilt steering adjusted to the lowest position and telescoped all the way out. Otherwise the top of the dash will probably be in the way. 3:02 - There is no need for left-hand drill bits. Just left-hand easy-outs, which all easy-outs are. 3:55 - the clips to unclip the ignition cylinder from the housing are located under each of the two tabs that the bolts that you just removed threaded into. You have to slide the cylinder forward also. They are less like clips and more like one-way doors that you need to press up on. 4:16 - If you need to get the key cylinder off the ignition switch, you need to watch the video linked in the description “How to Fix a bad VW Ignition Module for FREE! (STUCK KEY FIX)” and go to 1:27. You can tug and pry all you want, but without doing what is in that video, you won't get it apart. I hope this helps
Just wanted to commend my respect for this. I try and do my part, sharing as much as I'm able. I wouldn't be half as far, without shared knowledge from guys like yourself. Thank You. Everyone else, take notice. If you see an unanswered question, and you know it. SHARE, Never underestimate how much you may be saving someone's ass. That's all, I'm out. ✌🏻
Question, does the clock spring and the multi switch assembly have to come out in order to swap the cylinder? Seems like you can get to the lock cylinder without taking out the assembly.
i was able to use a small shape chisel and a pointed center punch to loosen the break away bolts. I went on an angel and it bit into the top of the bolt then i tap it with a small hammer once it loosened it just screwed out pretty easy.
3:42 how does the assembly come out? I feel like you skipped a step, mine is wriggling and sliding a little, but something is stopping it coming right off.
at 01:40 does anyone know how to disconnect this circuitboard module at the rear. I've removed the front screw and the cable with the yellow connector , I cant see what is still holding this module in place. I'm afraid to pull too hard in case I snap something that I cant fix later. The cable on the left is still connected but it doesnt look like I really need to disconnect it to remove the module. Really stuck here for last few days.
Yes, you take off the plastic case around the steering wheel, and you can remove the sensor, then the ignition switch which is the black plastic inserted on the left, is easily dismantled by a flathead, and then you can remove the white plastic inside.
I cannot get that clip off thats holding the airbag section in place, tried for 2 hours the clip will come down but not go back. Contemplating life rn its 1:30am
Thanks for the video bro, but @1:09 you just say take it off, but make sure it doesn't move? That's is completely confusing AF. 1) It would've been nice if you mentioned how to take it off. I'm stuck at this point, the thing won't budget. 2) How do you take it off, if it's not supposed to move. I'm literally stuck now! Frustrating af. Now I just have to stare at my car in the parking lot.
@BulliKid Much appreciated, but when you make videos like this that people follow and you skip over important steps, you leave them stuck in the middle of a project with their car half way apart. Anyways thanks for uploading.
To remove electronic module from the bottom there is a little square hole below the screw. Insert a thin strong wire in about 20mm and move wire to right making inserted end go left releasing front clip. The back clip is now visible as front drops down. Make a tiny hook on end of wire and pull centre of rear clip towards you. Module releases.
Not trying to be a dick or any thing but wow man you are doing the most. All you have to do to remove the brake away bolts is use a flat head screwdriver and a hammer on the edge of the bolt and with a few hits they are loose. Good job making easy shit look hard!
I had the same problem, for me the answer was just be stronger. I had someone wiggle the key while i turned the wheel back and forth with everything i had, worked for me🤷♂️
Great video. I replaced the factory bolts with M8-1.25 x 16mm socket cap screws, in case I need to do this again.
You saved me $1000. I am so grateful for your videos. Thank you so much. We were able to follow your videos and fixed the problems.
Glad to hear that Amy!

The link for the german tool doesnt work ..??
How do I remove the ignition switch? I have the ignition cylinder apart. But, I’m having a hard time removing the switcher.

At 0:41 what are these 3 screws/bolts called? I need to replace mine 😭
what year/make/model is shown? Don't seem to catch it at the beginning of the video
Checked the other video: 2010 Jetta
3:42 how does the assembly come out? I feel like you skipped a step, mine is wriggling and sliding a little, but something is stopping it coming right off.
I glued a nut with jb weld to the screw head and was able to remove it easily.
Fair play man, this video absolutely saved my ass. Thanks so much for the clear instructions
Glad I can help!
Dude just fixed my vw rabbit thank you so much saved me money gonna like and subscribe thank you brother
Gratitude!
A mechanic told me I wouldn't be able to do this myself because this requires a reprogramming of the immobilizer. Is that true?
@@iKnowWhoIamWhoRu I’m not a mechanic
I can not get that left wite connector off. The right one was no problem but left one is tough and i didnt and take the steering wheel off

Would you think this would be the same for a 2015 vw beetle?
Is there any chance you could take out the ignition switch without taking off the steering wheel? Thanks.
Umm I don’t think so

Snap off bolts so no one can still you car quickly, but thank you for the detailed guide!
No problem. 🙏
Great video man. Expand in detail. Best video I found. Tnx man 👍👏👌
Gratitude!!
What tool are you using at 1:34? Is there an alternate US tool that I might be able to use? Thanks, and great video!

Your cell phone front facing camera is also a mirror ;)
Thank you, great help.German engineering my a$$
Hahah
I am having a problem with Safe mode activating. Anyone else had that issue?
What if your steering wheel is locked?
I would still shimmy it while trying to remove key.
I had this done last night. Now I have no turn signals, or bright lights, the key fob will not work. Have to manually lock and unlock
Yes call electronics they don't last too long depending on the environment
What a nightmare. ... guess I'll likely be sheelling out that $1000 😢
Your nomenclature needs some work!!!!
