Just wanted to send a big thanks to you for the level of data, research and unbiased opinion you provide. I haven't even bought a device but I'm sure I will at some point! I'm thinking Oura3 but price and it being disposable (non-replaceable battery) is prohibitive so it's really waiting for a basic skinny strap for sleep tracking e.g. Fitbit3 so I can still wear a normal watch without looking weird! Got a Polar H10 for heart rate as my conclusion from your content is that there isn't yet one device to rule them all. Thank Rob. Keep it up!
The minute my fitbit stopped working, came to watch your videos before buying my next tracking device. The amount of research you present in each of your videos is impressive and is helping consumers make informed choices. Thank you!
I own a Fitbit Sense 2 and a Fitbit Charge 5. I can confirm, they are tracking sleep different. Even on fitness, they are different. What I recognized, if they are not fitted on the right spot, they're showing divergent data. That's why I'm a little sceptic, when you're wearing three or more at the same time. Anyway, I do enjoy your channel, keep going.
As an experiment, I wore an Amazfit, Polar Unite, Fitbit Sense 2, and Samsung 4 AND Muse S and Dreem 2 headbands all at the same time for six months. The EEG headbands were consistent in their somnographs with the only differences being in the amount of REM sleep. The watches were ALWAYS wrong, especially start times. The discrepancies were huge. The Amazfit was the worst and I stopped wearing it within a month. The only way to compare the somnographs was to align the start times, which I took from the Dreem 2. Conclusion: you cannot rely on smart watches for somnographs. It's a real shame that the Dreem 2 was taken out of the consumer market. The Muse headbands company is focused on meditation (always unreliable). There is no affordable wearable EEG sleep monitor on the market.
Awesome channel! I've decided to wait for your future updates on Oura Ring 4 and the Samsung Ring before buying anything. Mostly posting to help you get early releases from companies for review!
WHOOP vs Fitbit Inspire 3 experience: After a couple weeks of using both devices simultaneously I can say that WHOOP consistently estimates REM and Deep sleep way higher (1.5x, 2x and sometimes even 3x) than my Fitbit Inspire 3. REM: last night Fitbit Inspire 3 recorded 0:30 minutes of REM, whereas WHOOP recorded 2:05h. That's a 4x difference! Deep sleep: Fitbit Inspire 3 recorded 0:58h, whereas WHOOP recorded 1:52, that's nearly a 2x difference. This result was quite consistent across the two weeks, regardless of whether I was using the devices on the same arm, right, left, or both arms. It's frustrating to see the results to be so divergent. I feel that WHOOP overestimates, whereas Fitbit Inspire 3 underestimates. For now, this has reduced my trust in sleep stage tracking with these devices, and will probably not take it very seriously. I'll mostly look at overall sleep length, HRV and resting heart rate to assess health and readiness. Thoughts?
Great video, as usual. I have the Fitbit charge 6 and refuse to give up the battery life and the fact that it solely is a fitness tracker and not like having a phone on my hand. I only let the Fitbit notify me of calls. Good to know it’s still a bit up there in accuracy. I’ve tried premium and basic and found that Fitbit without premium, is still beneficial. Thanks for posting!

Haven't listened to the video yet. But here is my opinion and why. Whoop is great. Mostly because I've been able to wear it 24/7 for 2 years (except for showers) and it is comfortable and gives good data. I tried the Oura Ring. I thought it was good, but could it was uncomfortable, and after a month took it off and never put it back on. (Cannot be great if not comfortable.) My Apple Watch has too short a battery life, so I take it off to recharge every night.
There was a time when I used the Apple Watch 8 and the Whoop at the same time to see if I noticed a difference in the sleep tracking. I didn't attempt to keep track of it in a scientific manner but I did notice that the Apple and Whoop had different readings for deep sleep and REM sleep. It seems the Whoop fairly consistently gives a higher amount of deep sleep and REM sleep than the Apple Watch. For me it really doesn't matter which one I use. I figure that if I use one consistently and have a data point to compare to how I feel then that is what is important. Also the Whoop does a better job of putting the whole package together.
Bought the Huawei band 9 solely just for my running HR monitor so I can gather some HR data while saving for a more premium running watch. Suprisingly, that watch collect good data of sleep too, just see the time I go to bed and the wake up time, and the duration match and it seems just accurate enough, so i’m happy with the purchase
Hi Rob, great and insightful video, I sleep using a BiPAP NIV to treat CO2 Retention as a result of being born with Scoliosis and Hydrocephalus, I’m looking for the best sleep stage tracker, I do use a Wellue O2 ring to track my oxygen sats and that works well but I want a tracker for Sleep Stages, keep up the great work👍
This comment may be a little late, but I recently bought a Pixel Watch 2 (mostly based on your studies), and I'm very happy so far, but I have one question maybe you (or someone else) can help with: On the Fitbit app, there's an option for "normal" or "sensitive" sleep tracking, what's the difference and what would you recommend? I'm a light sleeper who often wakes up in the middle of the night, but on my previous Huawei Band 8 it often didn't notice I was actually awake because I wasn't moving (I guess).
Excellent review. A question. You said apple Fitbit are good if you have normal healthy sleepers. What if a person has really bad sleep issues, verging on insomnia which watches are most accurate to track sleep activity?
Love these reviews. You seem very honest and share important thoughts via proper scientific articulation, which is a breath of fresh air in the field of health, so thanks a ton for that and I hope you'll stick with this! Was arguing whether I should get a tracker again, but decided against it due to my finances being limited, sleep being really bad and the fitbit I used having been very unreliable in this regard, and the other data being not very valueable or actionable. It's a bit of a bummer because I love data, tracking, optimizing stuff and so forth, but I'll stick with my quarterly health assessment (blood pressure,...) and some subjective data/reflections for now. Thanks again!
In my country there is a very good special offer on Huawei watch Fit 3 and it's only for 2 days !! Please just tell me that, is Huawei watch fit 3 are good as fit2 ?? This information is enough for me.
Always loved your reviews, thank you for taking things to an even further level. Hoping to see reviews on the oneplus watch 2, newest withings offerings and whatever else might come out in the future. Keep being awesome :D
Thank you! I have an Instinct 2 and have inherited an Apple Watch SE 2022. I think my best plan is to use the Instinct for daily wear and use the AW in the evenings for workouts and sleep. I just can't stand the SE battery life!
Hey there! I know I've mentioned this before, but I'll keep nudging until it sticks 😄. Could you do a video on the future of health wearables? Specifically, what kind of bio-sensors we might see in the next five years? I'm thinking along the lines of sensors that could measure things like calories in and out, continuous blood pressure, and other game-changing metrics that could help improve health worldwide. Would love to hear your thoughts!
First of all, thank you so much for been doing review with true data sets. I know we are all waiting for your HUAWEI WATCH FIT 3!! Haha... By the way, I am not sure if you can do some HONOR's review as they MIGHT have really good products in the marketing as well...eg, Honor Watch 4, Honor Choice Haylou watch, Honor Band 9... Thanks!
Lets be honest here; According to a large study published by Science Direct 1 February 2024 these reference devices like Dreem 2 head band is anywhere between 55%-82% accurate detecting sleep stages. its like tossing a dice. It does worst on REM sleep detecting .. so if the reference device is off how fair are these tests really ? All your resting should be vs polysomnography
Really seems like junk science, insane he decided to even include parent company sponsored "studies" into his data. This graph is enough to make the pharmaceutical companies in "dope sick" blush.
I looked it up - not a large study at all, only 10 people. Also the study only tested those with a diagnosis of Parkinsons Disease, so not representative of general population.
@@ABC123UIDF There was another study quite a few years back with 25 healthy subjects and for sleep stage they found accuracies of around 82% against polysomnography. So, this would definitely cloud the comparisons. _that being said, It'd just add larger error bars to the points on the plot and their overall position would be the same. I think this is something Rob knows as well, and I hope he could give us a plot of the upper-right corner with the error bars. Essentially, all devices in the upper right corner are fairly comparable to each other
@@abhishekpatra812 The studies are not comparable, one is of a population with a specific disease and avg age of 70. That being said, the study you reference is also relatively weak evidence alone, as researchers had financial biases for this product and the study did not detail any measures put in place for these biases - such as random selection of participants
@@ABC123UIDF The study I'm talking about is Arnal et al, Sleep, Volume 43, Issue 11, November 2020. And the financial bias is that its partly sponsored by Dreem, so the results should be in favor of Dreem. Still they got 82 +- 6% accuracy. Curious about what do you find as a weak result here? I mean sure a, n=100 or more study will be ideal, but those are much harder to do Also, in practice devices like the dream will of-course have lower accuracy than Polysomnography. Do you expect them to be comparable or more accurate??
Thank you Rob! I have been following you for quite some time. I ended up buying a Fitbit that's reasonably good in sleep tracking yet within my budget. Unfortunately Google bought Fitbit and now it's messing with it. I have a feeling I will have to stop tracking my sleep because I can't afford to buy the expensive ones plus the monthly fees. If tracking my sleep caused me stress it's not worth even trying.
@@nd_otd They keep making "updates" to make the app less and less user friendly. Charts and displays have become difficult to view etc. It's a matter of time the entire app will become so user unfriendly that old Fitbit users will all jump ship, me included.
Apple watches were prominently featured but Samsung ones were nearly absent even if they have advanced sleep features with Samsung Health. Could you comment on how the latest / greatest Samsung watch compares versus the latest Apple watch / latest Oura ring? Thanks so much!
This is a very detailed and research based post which is just what I was looking for. I have a 30 free trial for a Whoop band and am glad I can return it. It is both more and less than I want. I haven't yet figured out how to adjust the time I am asleep and Whoop doesn't seem to know how to do it either! It seems to know when I exercise, but I know how long I exercise and the intensity so I don't need that info. Plus Apple watch has that capability although it isn't easy to set. I have an older model Apple watch which has sleep tracking and think I will buy a new one. My only hesitation is that the study showing it is great was conducted by Apple. Even if I am not totally thrilled I will have a new Apple watch and no subscription payment. A big thank you for this report.
Wellue, and others, ring pulse oximeter appears to be medical grade, super easy to use, to supplement wearables with accurate blood oxygen saturation. High sampling rate picks up hypoxemia that wearables miss. Great for mountains too if you feel faint etc above the treeline. Having said that my specialist physician says to check your hemocrit levels in your annual blood tests. IF ok, any hypoxemia is ok. Your annual blood tests say a lot: "The Longevity Paradox..." by scientist and heart surgeon Gundry. It's easy to measure your youthfulness or premature aging...
But since sleep is only one set of data, so unless Oura ring would pair with Garmin, no point having extra device. My garmin kind is in sync with my cpap readings.
Crazy how fitbit inspire 3 si so on top with others way more expensive. I have it and i love it the sleep tracking. I do feel that when I am tired I had a low sleep score and vice versa.
Since you can't get really buy a Dreeem device anymore, how does Muse S fair for sleep tracking? I noticed it was used in your previous video (with more electrodes attached).
This a very valuable work. It must be quite time consuming while holding down a job too. I thing seeing how a fairly decent device, like the pixel 2 or Huawei GT4 has changed after a few months of updates would be a fascinating video too.
I have a Garmin Forerunner 955 and for sleep tracking I find it pretty useless. First of all it always thinks I'm asleep when watching TV, which results in the watch detecting naps and overestimating my time spend sleeping at night. I also suffer from sleep apnea, yet it doesn't register it, no "time awake" and only sometimes marks my sleep as "restless". If your sleep's already good, a tracker is pretty redundant in practice (yes yes, data is fun 🙂), so it would be great if these devices get better and will be able to track sleepdisorder symptoms in the future.
I am still trying to figure out what fitness and sleep tracker would be best for me. The sleep tracking and ability to view the data in s sensible format is most important. For weight lifting and cycling I use the Verity sense currently and am happy with it. The Apple watch seems to be a good choice because it does more than just sleep/fitness but the Whoop appeals too because I can hide it more. The thing stopping me from the Whoop is the heart rate accuracy. So bottom line, for the Apple Watch are there now good third party apps or any other way to interpret the data? Or has Apple Health improved enough now as you have made comments in the past that the data interpretation leaves a lot to be desired. Battery life is my concern with Apple Watch. If I wear it to sleep when am I going to charge it?
Appreciate the content! Can you please review the accuracy of the Ring Conn 2? Esp since they're trying to go for FDA approval for detecting sleep apnea.
It would be nice if the Oura Ring 2 devices can be updated with the new algorithm, right? It could even be that they are updated, but the studies were done before the update. I can't really complain about such a small piece of "e-waste" as a ring, but on principle it's nice to keep the older ones going (and they get money from subscription).
since I have a bit of a problem with the translation....which one would you recommend as the best for measuring sleep?? Thank you very much for your help.
Thank you for all your effort in your videos. They have helped me a lot. I wanted to buy the Apple Watch SE but was unsure because so many people said that the Oura Ring is so much better at sleep tracking and Apple is very bad at it. But according to your list, the Apple Watch SE 2022 is better, right? Otherwise I'm thinking about waiting until next year when a new SE might be released. I had the Oura 3 where you didn't need a subscription, but due to the body fat loss it no longer fits. I was thinking about buying the Oura Ring 4, but the subscription is keeping me from it because it's already expensive enough. I then got the Fit Bit Charge 6, but I think it's a shame that they don't have a dark mode for the app. That means I can only use the app during the day, otherwise I'm wide awake.
Great job, thank you! Although I was expecting to see the Mi Watch in this review because it performed well in your test, unlike the Mi band, but unfortunately you didn't include it in the review.
i tried the fitbit inspire 3 for about 3 weeks and wore it every time i tried to sleep or nap and for some reason it only picked up that i was even sleeping at all 2 days out of that entire time. I really have no idea if it’s something to do with me and the way that I sleep or the device was just defective, but either way that was my experience Also out of the two times that it detected I was sleeping at all, it was not accurate at all either
I wear Apple watch se22 and Garmin Instinct 2 at the Same time changing Arms all of nights and they are very similar for me. The Timings of the phases are a little different but Overall numbers total are basically identical
03:48 It's no surprise that there are only few studies dealing with Apple's Sleep Detection. The battery of this product mostly doesn't survive 1 night :D

Rob what happened with the full review of Huawei band 9?
Great video. I recently got the Oura ring (gen 3) and am concerned the data it’s giving me is not accurate. For example, it’s consistently showing my overnight HRV to average around 20 which seems really low. If I take a static reading with a device like Elite HRV using a heart rate strap, I’ll get a score of 45-65. I realize the overnight data will be different from a point in time test but these seem way off. Is there any way to figure out if my Oura is just not working correctly? So far their customer service has been not been particularly helpful.
Can you try sleep as android with and without a wearable (e.g. miband 7). It should not really matter which wearable you use since the accuracy mainly depends on the algoritms.
Can you provide me with the reference parameters for each sleep stage on the Apple Watch? Although I wear my Apple Watch every night and get results, I don't know if last night's sleep was effective or not?

Thanks. l LOVE YOUR REVIEWS!
My pleasure!
Always loved your reviews, thank you for taking things to an even further level. Hoping to see reviews on the oneplus watch 2, newest withings offerings and whatever else might come out in the future. Keep being awesome :D
Withings ScanWatch 2 pleeeease!!!
@@mtsrln And the Nova too! Based on the interview that happened a couple of years ago, withings was really looking to step it all up further.
Really illuminating video, thank you.
I would like to see your analysis of the newer RiigConn Gen 2 stating Sleep Apnea 90% detection accuracy.
I appreciate your approach to testing these devices. Top notch!
Thanks for your efforts, just learned about this channel and subscribed ofc!
Glad I found your channel. Beautiful... I just love the detail and effort put in. A+ stuff imo!
Hello Rob, thank you for your thorough reviews. Do you intend to make one on the ringconn? Thank you!
This guy is a legend for putting such work
Thank you! I have an Instinct 2 and have inherited an Apple Watch SE 2022. I think my best plan is to use the Instinct for daily wear and use the AW in the evenings for workouts and sleep. I just can't stand the SE battery life!
Great video ! It will be interresting to test the last Withings. My cardiologist says they have the best heart tracking.
Thank you for your accurate reviews. Would be nice to include some about Ultrahuman ring tho 👌🏼
Thanks!
Thanks for sharing :-)
Ultrahuman,ringcoon aurora rings Review Button ... 👇
He won't mention other rings, only Oura Ring over and over again.
Starting to suspect he is a sponsor of, loosing faith in his assessments.
I mean sure a, n=100 or more study will be ideal, but those are much harder to do
Also, in practice devices like the dream will of-course have lower accuracy than Polysomnography. Do you expect them to be comparable or more accurate??
Great one!
can you please review the ultrahuman ring ?
Waiting for watch fit 3 review
UP! Also waiting for this review to come out
probably similar to band 9 findings
watch fit 3? the huawei one?
up
I hope the tests will show results no worse than Huawei watch fit 2, because I already ordered them 😄
Thank you Rob!
I was considering buying a Fitbit, but reading your comment made me a bit concerned. Can you elaborate on what's google doing with fitbit?
Thanks for your thorough work comparing smart watches. Is there scientific or your own results of withing scanwatch 2 about sleep detection?
Will you be doing a breakdown/analysis of apps like Athlytic and Superset (now Bevel)?
But since sleep is only one set of data, so unless Oura ring would pair with Garmin, no point having extra device. My garmin kind is in sync with my cpap readings.
Excellent review as usual!!! Great work 👍👍👍
Crazy how fitbit inspire 3 si so on top with others way more expensive. I have it and i love it the sleep tracking. I do feel that when I am tired I had a low sleep score and vice versa.
Great work by you. !!
Can you suggest a nice smart device for tracking/preventing night terrors. It would greatly benefit. !!
Such a comprehensive review! Awesome job. Subscribed!
Have you ever tested The Ultra Human ring. Wired thinks it’s as good as Oura with no subscription. What do you think?
The video I was waiting for!
Since you can't get really buy a Dreeem device anymore, how does Muse S fair for sleep tracking? I noticed it was used in your previous video (with more electrodes attached).
I'm wondering:
1. Isn't the watch smelly if we exercise in it all the time?
2. Is it comfortable to sleep in the watch?
1. Maybe, depend on the type of strap,...
2. Depend on your wrist, some find it ok to sleep with a watch, other dont
@@Dangg1589 thank you for your answer
This a very valuable work. It must be quite time consuming while holding down a job too.
I thing seeing how a fairly decent device, like the pixel 2 or Huawei GT4 has changed after a few months of updates would be a fascinating video too.
@TheQuantifiedScientist have you tested Muse S? If not, can you do it for us?
We only get mibands for reference, but how about redmi watches 3 and 4 are they any good?
I have a Garmin Forerunner 955 and for sleep tracking I find it pretty useless. First of all it always thinks I'm asleep when watching TV, which results in the watch detecting naps and overestimating my time spend sleeping at night. I also suffer from sleep apnea, yet it doesn't register it, no "time awake" and only sometimes marks my sleep as "restless". If your sleep's already good, a tracker is pretty redundant in practice (yes yes, data is fun 🙂), so it would be great if these devices get better and will be able to track sleepdisorder symptoms in the future.
Please do a video on the Apple Se !!
(I mean an update, because we're not really sure it's as good as your first test proved)
Can you also look into overnight HRV? Or HRV in general? Do different watches give you different values in HRV?
Please have a video about Huawei Watch Fit 3, Huawei Watch Fit 2 is so good, but we want to know its upgrade
Great video! Why haven't you included the Polar Verity Sense in this review?
I really have no idea if it’s something to do with me and the way that I sleep or the device was just defective, but either way that was my experience
Also out of the two times that it detected I was sleeping at all, it was not accurate at all either
Long answer short: Huawei was better than Apple and Rob is not going to admit that.
Thanks for the amazing job, Rob! Could you please do a review of the Huawei Watch D?
When are you publishing the Oura 4 review?
Please test apple watch + Athlytic , according to your graph this should be the best solution in regards of sensors, accuracy & price.
What is a good budget one to use for sleep if you want the raw data?
Can you try sleep as android with and without a wearable (e.g. miband 7). It should not really matter which wearable you use since the accuracy mainly depends on the algoritms.
Can you provide me with the reference parameters for each sleep stage on the Apple Watch?
Although I wear my Apple Watch every night and get results, I don't know if last night's sleep was effective or not?
