I'm amazed at how good the Apple watches appear to be compared to the Garmin. I had the expectation that Garmin should be at the top of performance based on their focus in sports body tracking.
I have two garmin watches, a whoop, and an Apple Watch - and they all agree on resting heart rate and similar data that you want to track over time. Also all of them agree on HRV data.
I mean you are to me the Ronaldo of testing for any device there is 😂. You are legit and all your content is really appreciated all the best to you 🎉🙏🏾
It is a steep asking price, however it seems to have some additional trackers compared to other devices for measuring other aspects of vitality although they are not as accurate as the gold standard devices available in a clinical setting. For example, the sleep tracking was the selling point to me because at the time, around a year ago, the sleep tracking offered more information than Apple Watch tracking. However I’m not sure how they compare today with the new series 9 and ultra 2. Once Apple can track sleeping at least as good as whoop can, I’ll switch.
This has to be the most important video on wearable. We know manufactures will release a product that isn’t as accurate than stated. However a subscription product will be taking your money every month for something that is poor or inadequate performance.
Thanks for this very helpful info! I wish you would test Whoop's claims about HRV and try to untangle the value of their "recovery score." The value prospect with Whoop is very different than other wearables which are usually a one-time purchase instead of a subscription, making it harder to evaluate its worth.
I agree. The subscription is a tough sell but I love the whoop so far. It also pairs seamlessly with my Peloton. I find the recovery score to be very accurate. It also seems to know when I’m sick too.
Great review, I have just ordered a Whoop 4.0 using your promo code! I am still skeptical about it but still ordered.. already using a AW7.. let's see how Whoop behaves!

Great video! I'd love to see a long term review of the Fenix 7 now that it has HRV tracking (in 9.22 beta firmware). I also feel like Garmin accuracy often goes up a lot 6-9 months into a watch's lifestyle due to firmware updates etc.
I think this is great, I would null some of the data and your conclusion purely because the location of the devices are different. And the control device wouldn’t have minimal interference like you stated.
When watching your video on the Oura ring, you compared two oura ring 3. I think that's really a good idea to compare exactly the same product during the same night to test their accuracy. I really hope you will do the same for the whoop next time. Thanks for your video !
I once heard Matt Walker mention something about wearing socks and gloves to sleep to warm the extremities. This theoretically draws blood to the surface of the skin, away from the core, which has the heat transfer effect of removing heat from the core. So your experiment results could be explained that as the core lowers in temperature, the heat is transferred to the skin in an attempt to cool off the core, which might be why your skin temp was rising. Could be interesting to see if the reverse were true: does cooling the skin heat up the core? Kind of like a thermostat regulator?
Was about to post something similar from what I had heard by Andrew Huberman. The core temperature is lowest around 2 hours before waking, which would technically mean it's the time when your peripheral temperature would be at it's highest since your core releases heat to the periphery in order to cool itself
Can’t wait to watch your review of the Garmin 255. I wonder if the smaller size and the upgraded elevate 4.0 heart rate monitor in it will make it more accurate
This was a good quality review of fitness tracker, you’re awesome taking the time to do it, just on the temperature area every time you want to make a comparison of how good a sensor or detector is you should compare it with something in the same level, is comparing apples with apples, the temperature varies from .5 to 3c on different parts of the body is not the same the skin on the arm than on the armpit, the mouth, forehead or for different holes and cavities in the body 😅. Amazing review ☝🏼
Great video. I prefer whoop over Apple Watch simply because the whoop is more rugged and fits more of my lifestyle. I do martial arts and have whoop on me, even take it in the sauna. Something that I cannot do with Apple Watch and other wearables
I'm really glad you mentioned the subscription information early, so I could skip the rest of your video. Like you, I much prefer to buy a device outright, rather than pay as I go; and the $20 a month subscription just turns me off. Thanks for your research and your video.
It would be interesting to see if the whoop 4.0 results would improve on some of the harder exercises to monitor such as weightlifting and outdoor cycling using some of the other accessories that Whoop had to offer. More specifically, if doing upper body workout, would the results improve if you placed the whoop monitor on a different part of your body like in the shorts that whoop sells? Essentially placing the device on a part of your body that is not actively being engaged for the workout.
Hi 👋🏼 My wife has just been diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis at a vwry young age (29) after ~5 years of exploring why she has chronic pain and fatigue (blood tests, exploratory surgeries, fibromyalgia diagnosis, 3 x lumbar punctures). I've heard you mention that you too have chronic pain. I'm strongly considering the whoop band to get her into better health and to try track her body stress levels as the chronic pain means she is never really feeling good enough to exercise. She wants to improve though. This device and others like it (Oura, Sleep8, ultrahuman etc.) are very difficult to get in South Africa, and very $$$ because of our weak currency. Wpuld love to get your opinion on whether you think this device wpuld be helpful inher tracking and improving her physical health, and any recommendations you might have for her. Your videos are super helpful and easy to understand btw
whoop is pretty good at tracking stress, but it has no way to alert you to high stress. If you want to know your stress levels you need to check them on your phone Some of the garmin watches track stress, and can alert you if your stress levels are high. One of the difficulties with garmin is they have so many products, all with different features, so you need to make sure you are getting one with the features you want. I think that the high stress alerts are called "relaxation reminders" in the list of features, but I can't be sure because I don't have a Garmin myself. You could have a look at both whoop and garmin and see which would be most affordable for you.
As a person with a statistics degree and employed in the big data industry, , I appreciated the thoroughness of this video. Be curious though how it rates against Apple’s Ultra watch. I’ve seen Whoop 4.0 usually over estimate heart rate vs Apple which is not what your graphs show. On sleep I am getting higher degree of variability with Apple vs Whoop. I’m not as scientific as you but those are my early observations with Whoop over the past two weeks since I bought it. ,
Great video! I get that you put the whoop on the biceps and it should perform just as well given it’s advertised also for that. However somehow I wonder now whether it would perform better vs say the Apple Watch if worn on the wrist… I guess another comparison would be asking too much…:) great video though!
I too was thinking this same thing. I think the device would move around more on my bicep vs my wrist, especially during weight training. I haven’t checked the specs but I wouldn’t think the whoop 4 would have much worse sensors than the Apple Watch but perhaps. I also don’t know if the sensors work better in different places. Like maybe the wrist has relatively thinner skin than the bicep? Maybe less fat? Less water retention? More sweat on bicep vs wrist? Not sure how these affect the sensors accuracy. Id think having different placements of devices would have less of a control of variables. Maybe the Apple Watch on the bicep would rank much lower than it is or even lower than the whoop? Idk. Maybe I’m thinking about it too much. lol. In the market for whoop or ultra human ring so this video popped up of course. The detail here is cool at least.
Since devices are getting better and better overtime and you gigantic work is bringing this up, I start to think these companies are getting to collect huge amounts of good quality data on people. So I start to see the huge price consumer pays for accuracy. For instance, what if medical insurance companies would buy these data and price their insurance based on the results. Are we getting there ? Of course the answer is yes. But the point is.. how fast are we getting there ?
The solution to the whoop strap taking ages to dry is to take it off after showering and hang it up to dry. It dries much quicker when not in contact with the skin while the strap is drying you could: - not wear the sensor and accept that there will be a gap in your data - buy a second strap or another way of wearing the sensor from whoop - these are useful to have but I do think they are a bit overpriced - buy a second strap from etsy or ebay. These won't be as nice quality as the whoop strap, but they are a lot cheaper. The elastic they are made from could be a problem if you have a latex allergy but for most people it will be okay - use clothing you already own to hold the sensor against your skin Before I got a second strap, I found that ankle socks with elastic can keep the sensor against the skin quite effectively but are not 100% reliable
Lmao! "This letter C is the first letter of correct" What a fun poke at Americans! 🤣 I would definitely be interested to see how Whoop performs on different parts of the body.
The one question I have is how does the performance change as they update their firmware/software and algorithms? Your data shows that the whoop3 performed differently than the 4 but in later videos the whoop 4 had less agreement across sleep stages. I’d like to see a mega review of a handful of the popular wrist tracking devices, mainly how the whoop4 compares to the Apple Watch ultra 2 with all the new updates to software on the whoop4, like the strength training feature, and the ultra 2’s new OS and so on.
Furthermore, how much is the data affected by software updates? Does it make a difference or does the main difference come from the sensors and hardware?
I was a whoop subscriber for four years. After using the apple watch and other software such as Athlytic for calculating HRV much like Whoop for a fraction of the price, I question the accuracy of the information being provided. One could argue that the whoop data, its benefit to the user is in observing the trends in the data and the accuracy of its measurements is not that critical. I just cannot justify for the price point and the overall lacking experience with their useless customer support. In the end I was not sold on its value to me at the exceptional cost. I lost a band at the gym that I had had paid two years of service on. Instead of doing the right thing and taking care of the customer, it took two weeks of sending requests to whoop support to even illicit a response from the company. After two more questions and going back and forth with their support, I let them know that I was dissatisfied with their lack of care to my needs as a customer. I ended up purchasing an Aura ring, and will see if perhaps the culture of that company is perhaps a better fit. Perhaps they have more value for their customers. Whoop could care less about theirs.
You’re missing the Scosche in your heart rate trackers. I have done several tests where I wore it along with a chest strap while riding an indoor bike, and it agreed to within two heartbeats the entire time.
Thanks Rob. Great job! Wanna ask, my brother is elliptic and I’m researching different devices that could tell us when he had had a seizure at night. I own the Oura ring and think the movement tracking during sleep is useful also the heart rate tracking even though I understand it measures the heart rate every 5 mins so if he sizes between measurements then it wouldn’t show In your experience what’s the best device for the this? Keeping in my he sizes at night Thank you in advance!!
Looks like the Whoop algorithm is removing what it thinks is noise so misses really sharp spikes and troughs - but presumably they tested this and know that otherwise there are false-positive spikes that make the average correlation worse.
Your reviews on fitness trackers are the only ones worth watching. Accuracy is everything, so thank you for putting in the time to do this!

whoop is pretty good at tracking stress, but it has no way to alert you to high stress. If you want to know your stress levels you need to check them on your phone
Some of the garmin watches track stress, and can alert you if your stress levels are high. One of the difficulties with garmin is they have so many products, all with different features, so you need to make sure you are getting one with the features you want. I think that the high stress alerts are called "relaxation reminders" in the list of features, but I can't be sure because I don't have a Garmin myself.

It dries much quicker when not in contact with the skin
while the strap is drying you could:
- not wear the sensor and accept that there will be a gap in your data
- buy a second strap or another way of wearing the sensor from whoop - these are useful to have but I do think they are a bit overpriced
- buy a second strap from etsy or ebay. These won't be as nice quality as the whoop strap, but they are a lot cheaper. The elastic they are made from could be a problem if you have a latex allergy but for most people it will be okay
- use clothing you already own to hold the sensor against your skin
Before I got a second strap, I found that ankle socks with elastic can keep the sensor against the skin quite effectively but are not 100% reliable
I trust a man that uses the Tommorrow Night 80s theme in R studio
Wow ... great insight. Pretty insightful.
please do the same level of analysis for the ultrahuman ring.
Why is it that Apple Watch is more accurate despite it also being an optical sensor?
Better software
Lmao! "This letter C is the first letter of correct" What a fun poke at Americans! 🤣
I would definitely be interested to see how Whoop performs on different parts of the body.
C is also the first letter of cheeky
😂
Hi, did you wear your Whoop on wrist or bicep? I noticed that if I wear it on bicep it tends to record more Deep Sleep
The improvement in the accuracy stats from whoop 3.0 to 4.0 make a subscription seem useful…always get the newest gear?
"For Americans who are wondering what this C stands for, it's the first letter of the word 'Correct'." Flawless lol.
would love to see an evaluation of eightsleep pod pro mattress cover.
Same. ChiliPad too
I was a whoop subscriber for four years.
Thank you 🙏
woop messes up my sleep stages, it's always off for me
i find it difficult to find your channel
i could only remember your name "ROB" since you say at the beginning.
btw thanks for making these review .
What are some good devices for sleep tracking and HRV like whoop in 2024?
You’re missing the Scosche in your heart rate trackers. I have done several tests where I wore it along with a chest strap while riding an indoor bike, and it agreed to within two heartbeats the entire time.
Thanks Rob. Great job!
Wanna ask, my brother is elliptic and I’m researching different devices that could tell us when he had had a seizure at night. I own the Oura ring and think the movement tracking during sleep is useful also the heart rate tracking even though I understand it measures the heart rate every 5 mins so if he sizes between measurements then it wouldn’t show
In your experience what’s the best device for the this? Keeping in my he sizes at night
Thank you in advance!!
Looks like the Whoop algorithm is removing what it thinks is noise so misses really sharp spikes and troughs - but presumably they tested this and know that otherwise there are false-positive spikes that make the average correlation worse.
