I upgraded from 3 to 4 -- one thing not mentioned is that the 4 has a sharper edge around it. The ring feels more comfortable on my finger than the 3, but they should have rounded the outer edge to be less sharp. It's easy to scratch things you interact with, and I sort of fidget with the ring with my thumb, drawing it across the edge and thinking "man that's sharp; not the best industrial design'. I otherwise love the ring and feel like the data it generates is very valuable and motivates me to work on my health.
Upgraded from Oura 3 to 4 and not seeing any improvements whatsoever. The sleep stage tracking seems pretty much identical with no real changes and it’s basically useless as an overall fitness tracker. There is no improvement in battery life. Save your money and don’t reward this company until they truly innovate.
The gen 4 is the first time my size has been included. Sucks to only have one option, but $8 CAD/mo isn't terrible as I don't have any other type monthly subscriptions. Looking forward to getting my ring.
Thanks for the detailed overview. I’m on the market for a smart ring. Mainly to track my sleep. I have an Apple Watch, which I love, but the downside is I have to remember to charge it twice a day in order to use it for sleep and throughout the day. (Since the battery life is poor) Now if I had the Garmin watch, which my husband has, I wouldn’t need a watch plus a ring. But I have the Apple Watch for the text/call benefits since I rarely have my phone on me. Otherwise, I’ll be disconnected from the planet. 😂 Anyway, one of the reasons I haven’t gotten around buying an OURA ring is the big hardware price tag plus the annual subscription. Also, kind of ridiculous that they price the colors differently as if the color variety were made of more durable material. As a possible consumer, it makes me feel like they are nickel and dimming. I feel like asking oura, is the $100 dollar price tag difference on your rose gold more durable than your silver ring? I wouldn’t mind paying for the subscription if the hardware was priced lower, it truly is a deterring factor and why I’ve been needing to do extra research to see if it’s worth buying an OURA ring for the overall price-performance benefits or if there are better alternatives. Anyway, thanks for the detailed overview, I might check out the Ultra Human Ring too.
excellent presentation. I have the ordering three and I agree that the upgrade the GEN four there’s no sound if the company doesn’t even have a trade-in. So I’ll stick with my generation three and something significant happens. I also like your comments about the ultra human ring. I know they had some troubles in the start, but it looks like they’ve been improved, per your comments 😊
Hi! I am trying to decide between the Oura 4 or Ultrahuman Air. I saw your video about the UH but I think they have made some updates since that video. Between the Oura 4 and UH air, which one would you pick??
Love my ours ring 4 upgrades from the 3. Definitely like the new design and seems to be a nice upgrade. The subscription is fine the complaints against it are just hilarious and stupid. At 5.99 it’s a great deal and understandable. Same people who bitch about subscriptions get Starbucks every day.
You are a cuck who enjoys getting shafted by greedy businesses. What exactly are you getting from Oura that justifies a subscription on top of the fairly hefty RRP?
Bought the ringconn 2, really light and small with great battery life, but having a bit of trust issues with the data, so ordered a Oura gen 4 to compare and decide which I will wear. Plus I got 30 days open purchase so can return the gen 4 if I ain’t happy with it.
You can get the Amazfit Helio ring for very cheap as well. This is a tough sell but for some it may be worth it, but for most i think there are better options. Great video though!
I've never had a ring tracker but opted for the Gen 3 thing since its' on sale right now and i'm not sure if I will love it. I used my HSA account for whole thing and the 1 year subscription up front. Let's hope I love it lol
Why is everybody complaining about like 5 or 6 bucks per month? If that means the app gets updated and better over time why not? So much money we spend on BS everyday. At least this goes into your health
$6 to one person may mean something else to another. It's also worth noting that Oura is the only one doing this. There are a number of high quality smart rings on the market that are subscription free (UltraHuman, Galaxy Ring, Ringconn, etc...) and those competitor rings also receive lots of software updates. I do agree that it's a small price to pay but it is slightly annoying considering the product itself is very expensive.
@ yea I get that. Same discussion I also always have with the Whoop. Ppl don’t like that subscription model… it would be better to pick just one option 1. high price product or 2. lower price but app subscription… Oura kinda picks both. I personally don’t mind those $5-6. my opinion is: Oura beats them all, so take my money :). I also guess that whoever can afford a 400-500 dollar smartring, can also afford 6 per month. One or 2 times not going out for dinner per year saves you enough to pay the sub for a whole year. Doesn’t sound a lot of effort to me.
Thanks for the review and the honest point of view, I have a gen3 oura ring and was thinking about upgrading but decided not to and wait. But quick question, can I charge the Oura Gen4 on the Gen3 charger?
I would like to go on „a ring“ but for me : i would rather be interested in a full integration in apple health… so i can choose easily what hardware to wear today and mix it up! Every item has its advantages and disadvantages but as long it sums up in one „status app“ it would be great.. so I keep on sleeping with two watches (Garmin and Apple)… 😂
it’s the oura app that makes the big difference. it gives you some great data in a user friendly form. but apple watch does very well without a dedicated app
When used with a smartwatch you do get a lot of redundant data. The Ring is most useful for people who don't want to sleep with a watch on, or maybe only wear a watch when recording activities. Though, Oura does offer some unique stats that could be useful for some users. For example, COROS users could benefit from the "readiness score" since that metric isn't available in the coros ecosystem.
While they haven't launched a new ring they have launched several new colors and ramped up production to the point that it's widely available with overnight shipping on amazon. They also built a new factory in the USA to improve production time the states. I can only imagine this infrastructure will help them with whatever comes next!
I am one of those with the Oura 3 where it would miss some HRV data at night and heart rate where the Oura 4 has correctly recorded it all night and has never missed anything in 4 weeks. I’ve noticed with my Apple Watch on the same hand and at the end of the day it’s about 1500 steps lower. Apparently, it’s a known issue with Oura. It’s a lot more comfortable as I can’t even feel it on. Battery life is great. It seems when I’m doing a live recording activity it starts quicker. I bet some more features are coming soon
Nice video thank you. Great to have an independent review. I’m using an Oura ring 2. Can I ask if your upgrade advice would be the same? The 4 looks slimmer, more features. I don’t think I pay a sub on the 2 though. Thanks
The form factor is much nicer on the 4 compared to the 2 as there's no "flat ridge thing" which I didn't love. Other than that the metrics are similar though it seems most users are getting better accuracy with the 4. And of course, improved battery as well. Worth it? That's going to depend on your bank account!
@ ha yeah the bank account is the key one. Thanks for the rapid and thoughtful reply. I think I’ll stick with the 2 until it dies (or I do - whichever comes first)😀
I just saw a headline that they are partnering with dexcom to work with glucose monitors, and i guess eventually read blood sugar levels? Idk if anyone knows more, but as a diabetic it does sound tempting to get this for that functionality
Interesting. The subscription rules it out for me. I’m just not buying anything else with a sub. End of story. Would be great if garmin came up with a ring. That I would buy. Nice work Dave.
It's hard to compare price of Oura to other rings. Oura is designed in Finland and manufactured in Estonia. Oura programmers work in Finland. It is easy to have cheap devices when they are manufactured and programmed in China or India :)
It's not hard to compare price. The Oura is more expensive plain and simple and for those on a budget the price may be a non-starter. But you could argue it's made of a higher quality / standard and possibly more research in the app. The competition is getting really good though.
I just can't explain to myself why I should buy any feature-limited "fitness ring" (especially with monthly subscription) when I could use the same amount to actual fitness watch, which have display, buttons and tons of features more...
