Great review Andy. I was impressed with the looks and performance you were getting from both models. It makes you realize the mark up on clubs from the main stream manufacturers. Your swing looks great, you hit them all very well!

I went the direct to consumer route with New Level 602OS irons. Like Tacomo’s clubs they look great, sound great and perform well. They’re as good as any iron on the market and they’re reasonably priced. I played Murfield and Mizuno irons in the past and these new irons give me help with their slightly larger size while still looking blade like.

Yes I have seen several video reviews. They look amazing also. I have been eyeing the Wilson D9 DC Irons but the Takomo 101's look really tempting at 300 dollars less than the D9's. The big draw back is that we the consumer have alone reviews from folks like you to give us the facts because there is no trying them before you buy them. Great Review Andy!

They also make a 301 muscle back and 301 cavity back that they recommend for scratch players. Would be very interesting to see you give them a workout on the course. Slightly weaker lofts, 34 degree 7 iron vs 32 for the 201 and 30 for the 101. From what you say about feel and sound, am sure you would really like the 301s.

I've been playing the 201 with C Taper S since the end of last year. Absolutely fantastic. I play to a 5. They feel great, just as good as any forged club I've hit and miles better than any hollow body. Fairly forgiving as well. As has been said, factor in the price and it is an absolute no brainer.

Thanks for this, it did make me go to their website. The 101 hollow body is their game improvement club with stronger loft (7 iron 30 degrees) using a 431 stainless steel body welded to a 17-4 stainless steel face. The 101T hollow body is described as a players distance iron with slightly weaker lofts (32 degree 7 iron). The 101T has a shorter blade length than the original 101, with thinner top line and less offset. The 201 they categorize as a forged players cavity back with a milled hollow undercut back pocket. The 201 has the same lofts as the 101T (32 degree 7 iron) but is made of forged soft S20C steel. They also have a 301 series in two types, the 301CB and the 301MB. The 301CB is a forged solid cavity back with no undercut. The 301 MB is a classic forged muscle back. Both of these have slightly weaker lofts, with 34 degree 7 irons and are forged soft S20C steel. All of these irons have gotten excellent reviews from you and others. They are very well made and play superbly. They are a great option for us golfers who don't have $350 per club to shell out for any of the high end clubs no matter how great they are.

Takomo, along with Sub 70 are making the 'average golfer' reassess their thoughts regarding the big brands. £470 for 5-PW is not to be sniffed at and for mid to high handicappers on a budget. I am seriously considering the wedge set for £65 a club as I can not justify £170 or £500 for three wedges! Great review, Andy.

I have left handed 101s which I keep as my alternative clubs at our vacation home. I paired them with Sub 70 wedges. So this is my DTC bag, as opposed to my primary bag which our PING 425 irons, driver, and 3 wood; Mizuno hybrids, and TaylorMade wedges. I must admit for being my less expensive set of irons, I do play well with them, but not quite well enough to replace my PINGs. But for the cost, I highly doubt I could have done better for my alternative set.

New Level, Heywood and Sub 70 also make excellent irons at very economical prices thanks to direct sale. If you have time, you should try them all out. Yes, they have been demoed on other sites like TXG, but your method of taking them out on the course is really useful, and the more people who can be exposed to these reasonably priced clubs in these hard times, the better for them and for the game we all love..

I thought they were from Finland. I bought the 101 heads to stick on some True Temper 95 Elevate shafts as a backup/travel set. Only issues are 1) that they don't sell 101s with a gap wedge head (their non 101 gap wedge doesn't come heads only) and 2) I had to buy a 4 iron head i (which I later sold on Ebay) when I prefer hybrid at that loft. Only played them once, but it was a nice GI iron. . Your buddy James Robinson actually gamed the 201 for awhile (and loved the 101).

I’m about 9 handicap… best part of my game is irons.
    I’m a decent ball striker.
So… I have a really good set of hollow body irons that I play well… but I do love ( like it sounds like you do as well) the sound … the awesome feel of a good forged iron.
I realize that there likely would be somewhat of a drop off in distance but I assumed by your video that wasn’t much of an issue and that you prefer the 201 by a little bit.
So what do you think… 201 irons for me ?

Great review Andy but it starts to get confusing. I’ve followed you for a while and am bought-in to the importance of fitting (here you are loving direct to consumer) Also making the game easier by replacing long irons with hybrids/woods/hywoods (here you are hitting beautiful 4 irons). I won’t mention chippers......I also know that smile you have when you have soft feeling irons in your hands and you were certainly smiling alot on this vid. At that price, can you go wrong?........ I think you need 2 bags: 1) What you want most 2) what you think you should use to get better scores. Then you should play them 5 x each on the same course over a couple of weeks and tell us how it went (could make a nice mini series of vids). I think I could guess the outcome! Great content - there are no hard and fast answers, it’s more about feelings and emotions. That’s why we all still try to play hero shots when we should just take the medicine - it feels so good when it works 😆. On the other hand we want to break 80. That’s the dilemma we all face!

It's so great to see all these wonderful clubs in this market space. Don't get me wrong if I had unlimited budget I'd be going to Ping or to TaylorMade and then have a professional set up done with whatever clubs I desired based on what the statistics determined. But for us mere mortals, direct to consumer is absolutely brilliant. You of course should have some idea of what you would benefit from playing the most before making a purchase... I had a chance to hit the 301 CB and LOVE THEM! Now I am just impatiently waiting for my order to arrive!

Yes I have heard of them and yes you pronounced it correctly. Have seen a few other reviews and all were pretty positive. I like the look of these irons. To me though the 201 looks more like a cavity back than the 101 which looks more like a forged iron. At least compared to so many others models. I might pick up one just to test it out. Curious how you would rate the forgiveness of the 101s on a scale of 1 to 10?

Have seen these on James Robinson’s page. But I appreciate your review more. I too am a sound/feel player so I can relate more to your reviews. I am in G425’s and the sound feel wasn’t awesome (just like you described in your reviews) UNTIL I hit the graphite shafts. Maybe something to consider? Ask for 2 demos, one steel and one graphite?

I first saw these clubs introduced on James Robinson‘s channel. They look very interesting although he likes the smaller headed clubs and I like something a little larger just for the sake of confidence. The 101 looks excellent, but earlier in the year I watched your video also reviewing the Mizuno JPX 921 HoTMetaL and was convinced enough to finally buy them and they have worked very well. Now I see these. I love the hot metals they perform very well so I don’t think I would derail them to put these in the bag without being able to try them first and see how they feel and look at address compares.
OK Andy my question… Which would you think is the better iron for a mid to higher handicap golfer to use, Takomo 101 for the 921 hot Metal?

About a year or 18 months ago I thought about buying Takomo. Unknown and cheap, I got Callaways instead.
8 weeks ago I got the Takomo 101s. Nothing wrong with the Callaway, but I made a mistake and was a golf snob. The Takomos are great. Price, looks, and performance. Callaways are sold and gone. Takomo are here to stay. I'm 61 and a 14 handicapper.

The best set of clubs I have ever owned were the Nike Pro Combos. Which Takomo would be similar to those clubs? Would it be the 301 Mixed set of CB and MB? I am 49 and just getting back into golf after a 10 year hiatus. I played down to a 7 with those Nike’s.

How do these compare to something like a Ping G425, the Cobra Forged Tec X or the Rogue ST range? Obviously price wise these are way in front, how about in performance? Are they as forgiving with similar distances?
These look so good and perform in your hands well - but it's hard to make a call without being able to hit them.
Keep up the great reviews Andy, always interesting to hear your take on things.

I bought the 201's last october. I was a bit heistant as xould not try before you buy but glad i did as i absolutely love them. They feel brilliant and sound great too. Just a bit of advice for anybody considering these clubs be aware that you may also be charged an import tax due to changes since brexit on top of your original price. Mine worked out at roughly £460 for the clubs at the time and then an extra £92 for import tax to ups. So around £550 in total and even at that price well worth it.

It’s apparent that by not having a massive advertising budget, having no retail middleman and by not sponsoring tour pros, the savings can be passed on to the consumer. There are numerous direct to consumer brands offering great equipment at reasonable prices.

They look great but aren't the 101s similar to PXG's 0211 DC irons? I just bought 6 of those at £65 per club with Project X Cypher shafts and the wedges are the same design and price right up to 60 degree lob. Takomo 101s would seem to be around £75 per club with similar options with bladed and more expensive wedges. After playing both how would you compare them Andy?
