The Chrysler PT Cruiser is America’s most hated, retro styled, uber-utilitarian car that also sold millions of units. With roots in the Dodge Viper and Plymouth Prowler, the PT Cruiser had a surprisingly advanced development that involved virtual reality and later featured some of the craziest models. Everything from a limited edition Brian Setzer SEMA car to Chrysler’s own PT Cruiser Turbo GT. If you thought the PT Cruiser was dumb, you ain’t seen nothin’ yet!

@@NecromancerGarage You aren't taking into account that North Americans are indoctrinated to think that V8 is the only way to go. Don't get me wrong, they're great, but you need the right tool for the right job, and many people forget that as they zone out listening to the thunder of a N.A. V8 roaring as it blasts over roads.... usually in a suburban street so some goon can show off to their fellow goons. They live high on displacement until the price of gas goes up again, as it always does, then they remember that smaller engines can have turbos and soon the cycle starts over.

I own what is my 3rd PT! Yes, it is second gen and yes very different! The turn radius is way better though the interior is smaller and not as nice. My mother has a first gen so I drive both and am very aware of the differences. I don't know what their original target market was, however I was 45 when I bought my 1st and looked a long time to find a low mileage PT. Found a base model continued to look until I found my Sunset Boulevard street series with only 60k to be my last PT (I am 57 now). I am slowly customizing and will probably drop a new engine and transmission in rather than buy a new car when the time comes. In a world full of cars that look alike I cruise around happily being me in my PT!

Then they made 5 million of them. 🤣 I needed a car and it was only 1200 with 60k on it. Fits my 10ft kayak from windshield to hatch. So it will do until I get something else. 30k miles a year so I can't complain. But yes it's a gay car.

I had a PT Cruiser back in 2012. It was a high school grad gift. I ABSOLUTELY LOVED that car. In my opinion it's a good first car for anyone. It had amazing gas mileage as it only costed me about $30 to fully fill up the tank for gas. It was compact like a car but had the space of a mid-size SUV on the inside. Parked in small spots but great for grocery shopping as the back had a rear hatch and the rear seats could go down for extra space. For a 4-cylinder it drove good on the roads but I felt like it needed a 6-cylinder because it worked too hard uphills where the motor would scream and in Washington state, we have big hills. 6 cylinder cars help in hilly environments but it got the job done. Sadly they aren't built well for crashes because when I got rear ended it was about $4000-6000 worth of damage and we had to total the car out. I miss that car to this day. Not one complaint about it on my days of driving it. Honestly I loved the old hot rod style as many modern cars today all have a similar style making the PT Cruiser stand out more in today's era

Gotta say that im a "PT car person" but i feel the need to add in my two cents here even after all this time, perhaps someone else has already mentioned this, but the OFFICIAL second gen PT cruiser began in 2006, not due to body styling, but because on the '06 model the Chrysler engineers totally changed the electrical and computer system, (im working my a friends '05 cruiser while i OWN an '06 cruiser, so the difference is EXTREMELY obvious). SECRET MONEY SAVING TECHNIQUE AT THE END OF THIS COMMENT.
The '05 and older use whats called a PDC, or Power Distribution Center, which can easily be understood as, quite simply, the fuse box within the engine compartment, no sensors or signals to worry about. On the '06 model the engine compartment fuse box transformed from the PDC to the TIPM, or Totally Integrated Power Module. Easy to understand when thinking about this unit (which still had all the fuses easily visible on top) as a totally different computer, similar to your ECM/PCM module. IE- the Transmission Control Module (TCM) was "Totally Integrated" into the TIPM. Hence the naming of TIPM, among many other things. Essentialy what that means, in regards to the example given, is that if you ever have a problem with your TCM, there's NO simple power relay to check, its "Integrated"into the whole module. Just wires within and among the many other wires somewhere inside this chunky fuse box (meaning NO diagnosing potential and NO physical relays to test individually). Simply going to a Pick n' Pull for a different TIPM has cleared a RIDICULOUS amount of problems and check engine lights on my own cruiser. Consider it a computer in effect BEFORE the PCM.
The BEST part of owning a 2006 and younger PT Cruiser, is that any TIPM you but from a PullaPart or Pick N' Pull or salvage yard, is that the owners see this part, the TPIM as a simple fuse box, worth anywhere from $20-50 dollars. I paid $36 for my lasst TIPM i picked up as a spare in case i needed it, turns out i did. What these places DON'T know is that its a computer thats JUST AS important as the PCM, which they'd charge over $100 as a standard. A "refurbished" TIPM (cuz they don't manufacture these anymore TIPMs anymore) is easily worth $400-700. I got mine out of what looked like a brand new '06 cruiser that had obviously been rolled multiple times. the entire cabin was crushed and sitting there at the salvage yard. Not a speck of dust under the cap of the so called "fuse box", cuz it had obviously never been opened since purchase. So BAM, brand new TIPM with NO issues whatsoever and i paid $30 for it, when it should have been $300 AT LEAST. Did i mention i love these cars despite all the engineering problems???

I own one and it’s been in the family for the last 15 years plus. It still looks presentable for sure. I definitely get a few ppl telling me they once owned one and older folk then to like them they most. I like the fact it’s a four door and short in length. Easy to find parking. The fact the horse power is low works towards my benefit bc it prevents me from driving like any other young parent. Too fast. For no reason. Love the retro look. Wish it was above 200hp though. Yes I’m aware there’s a gr model. And it’s sweet.
