After using the Nikon Z F for a day, I think it might take my number 1 recommendation for a nikon wedding photography camera. While the Z8 is great, if you don't need silent shooting and pretty extreme video capabilities, I think this might be the camera for you.

Dang, all these were shot with the 40mm f2? I was legit worried I wouldn’t like the perspective, being a avid 35mm and 50mm shooter, but it’s really nice actually. Never shot with a 40mm. Can’t wait to get my ZF with that kit. Good video dude!
Been playing with my red version and it is heftier and larger than what I’m sure most initially think. So far I’m impressed with it as a smaller body to my Z9. Love the look but the grip from Smallrig was a smart purchase. The extra grip definitely helps and could actually be a little larger for my taste.
Hi Bro.
Thank you for the content, it was very useful and helped me in my decision to exchange my d750 for the zf.
Cheers from Brazil!
Can't wait to upgrade from the D750 to the ZF. I'm planning to keep both, but I'll be using the ZF way more often.
Autofocus looks amazing!!
How did you get a moss green Zf from BJ Photo Labs? I thought they were available only from Nikon Canada online?
I’ve only shopped at BJ’s for the last 10 years. Love those folks. They’re the best!
I wondered the same thing.
Zed F. I’m glad you caught that dad hamming it up on the horse.

Thanks for yet another brilliant review - Looking forward to seeing your thoughts on the other lenses on the camera vs just the more pancake style lenses - when is big too big for this camera!
If you get the green Nikon ZF and put the camera down on the grass the battery recharges.
😂
Lol
😵💫😵💫☠️
been using Sigma 35mm f2 (I series) on ZF with Neewer fe to z adapter. looks great and performs even better including autofocus.
Hi, thanks for the video. What is your experience about ergonomic in this camera? Are you comfortable to shoot weddings in terms of speed (for setting parameters and catching some momentts) and stamina (to hold this camera in hand for few hours).
And are you comfortable to use this camera with large lenses like nikkor 70-200 ?
Thanks
Nice video!
Useful tip for ppl. If you want to make use of this cool black and white mode and simply be able to select all your raw images, and still have the black and white shots to be in black and white, just make sure you import your photo settings into Lightroom along with the raw pics. It'll be a good starting base if nothing else...I find anyway. You can always remove them completely with one click if you don't think it's right at all.
Nice video .
for outdoor walks, street and portraits of my little daughter, what do you recommend on Nikon Z f?
tamron 28-75mm f2.8 di iii vxd g2
or
Nikkor z 24-120 f4 s
Thanks for sharing. Very useful. I am checking the camera. it's beautiful but at the same time. I am still hesitating between this camera and the Z8.
How do I get your presets again? I’ve been using your 2019 presets for years, but these are beautiful images.
Love the Moss Green
We're moss green buddies! The camera is by no means "small" but I do recommend the grip. The build quality feels as good as the old Nikon FE/FM far from the Zfc. Let's see if this is one holds up for 40 years as well, lol.
🙌🏻 Bro found the B&W switch's use.
I’m impressed you managed to get the camera to focus on the parents as they walked down the aisle in a sea of other faces also in the shot. Was this also using the C1 autofocus selection box?
I picked up a Zf last week also and am very happy with the image quality and autofocus using the 40mm f2 and 24mm f1.8
Cheers
That was just on full autofocus points surprisingly.
I’m not sure if that is partial “ai” at work or just the fact that the parents were more directly facing you than the audience and moving through the frame centre… or just luck!
How did you get the Moss green Zf at a store when they only sell the coloured ones directly with Nikon?
Upgrade to ZF from Z6II or wait for Z6III? Wow those colors, Fall is so nice!
What did you do?
@@mihailotancev3284 Nothing yet, might trade all my z cameras in for a Z8.
Straight Vintage at 1:30. Tim shooting super 8, Lindsay shooting film, and you shooting a retro digital.
Thanks for the vid. I own this camera but I was sent me the wrong 40mm so have yet to shoot it. Hopefully I get the SE lens tomorrow and I can use it for this weekend's sessions.
I really enjoyed your video! Just one small piece of feedback - I noticed the black frames added to simulate DSLR picture-taking. Since it's a mirrorless camera that doesn't actually experience any blackout, those frames seem a bit out of place and can be somewhat distracting.
The z8 and z9 are the cameras with no blackout. This one usually just duplicates the last frame to hide it. But for whatever reason mine doesn’t. Even if it did it in camera it probably wouldn’t for the hdmi feed
@@TaylorJacksonPhoto interesting. I own the Z9 and just ordered the Zf.
actually love the look of this camera, as always you show its not the camera its the photographer with any camera, AF options with C options is good.
great content as always!!
Thank you very much for the beautiful video. What about the white balance when using a D850 in parallel? Unfortunately, the Z6 is totally different from the D850! Therefore, it is difficult to use these two cameras at the same time at a wedding, as the Lightroom presets have a totally different effect.
Thanks for the review, BJ is a great place to get gear
That's it I'm convinced this camera is going to added to my wedding kit. Only not this year 😂. Most likely next year
My z dream ever
4:21 Yeah, I am glad I am not the only one who thinks this is weird. But I actually went into the manual and read up on how it works. Here is the gist:
1. You can either use Auto-ISO or Manual ISO, regardless of the dial setting.
2. The camera will only set the specific ISO from the wheel when in manual ISO.
3. In Auto-ISO, setting the ISO dial to a specific value will change the max ISO ceiling the camera will use to determine proper exposure.
I wish the camera could set up to assign AUTO-ISO only to some modes, like AUTO-ISO for P, A, S but not M. Maybe they will refine this with firmware updates. For now, I have added the AUTO-ISO shortcut to the custom menu.
5:32 My first impression of build quality was mixed. Nikon got a lot right but they're shooting themselves in the foot a couple of times with questionable material and design choices. The plastic hinge of the screen on the left edge of the body feels cheap for an edge of the body that you WILL bump into something at some point. The two control dials on the front and back of the camera just feel plain wrong. They're plastic and turning them feels cheap, it even sounds cheap. My two reference points on what I was expecting is the Leica M10 with its rear metal control wheel and dampened, smooth operation and the Olympus Pen F fro 2016 with a much lower price point which has METAL control wheels as well which feel and sound very high quality. Why add a metal top and bottom plate with brass dials on the top and then skimp on the control dials? It makes no sense. The other major disappointment are the SE prime lenses. Nikon should have at the very least added a metal lens mount - I cannot get over it how much the cheap feel of these SE lenses that are supposed to exclusively go with the Z f eat into the Nikon Z f brand appeal - what a needless corner to cut. I would have paid a little more for a better build of these SE lenses! None of the Micro Four Thirds small primes to go with the retro Pen F have such a cheap build quality - and some of the lenses have cheaper retail prices than these SE lenses. Nikon is milking us with these.
6:28 Be careful with the default settings for the shutter mode. Nikon sets it electronic first curtain instead of mechanical shutter only. The readout speed of the sensor seems to be very slow and it's VERY noticeable when shooting in artificial light where banding shows up readily. You need to set the shutter mode to all mechanical to avoid this. Also very disappointing for a 2023 camera in that price range. My 2016 Olympus Pen F at half the price point has electronic shutter - and I tested it with the same exposure values, same lighting conditions against the Nikon Z f --> banding with the Z f using electronic first curtain, no banding with the Pen F using ANY shutter mode including full silent electronic.
After having had the camera for a few days now and putting it through its paces I can say that it's a mixed bag and it's cutting a lot of corners. It's fairly priced at USD2000, but it's not a bargain. The Panasonic S5II is still the best bang for the buck in that price category, I would think the Canon R6II also easily beats the Z f in a lot of meaningful ways. The Z f is my first Nikon and I am beginning to understand Nikon's market segmentation and product strategy a bit better. In one word: don't expect luxury when buying the Z f - even though the brand appeal is meant to project luxury. You will be disappointed with that expectation - regardless of what countless RUclips videos will tell you. Don't expect Leica build quality. Don't even expect Olympus build quality. Don't expect a mini-Z8. Overall, I like the Z f. I will keep mine. But I will probably not much expand into the Nikon ecosystem with glass or other bodies.
Tim cracks me up 😂
He just wanted to be in the drapes
What are you using to record the camera screen?
The variety of colors for the body is nice..but how did NIKON completely miss the opportunity to have a silver color?....Silver is basically one of the standard colors you should release when you make a "vintage" inspired camera from Nikons past historical bodies..Especially most cameras back then were either Silver or Black...unless they are planning a "special edition" Silver ZF..haha but really should have been a color from the start..haha
it’ll be the same thing but reverse as Zfc, silver came out, then black the next year. Guessing they released black first this time as it is a preferred colour for most (google silver black camera poll and see results).
Silver will be for ZF 45mp 😘
@@borocotochacha right..I can see that happening companies always to that to consumers..have a slight tweak in specs and a popular color way and bump up the price as well haha
Just got my Nikon Zf today :)
Do you also have this strange rattling sound inside the camera body when it is off, if you slightly shake it?
It's strange because when I shake my Nikon Z6 II - it is almost silent :)
Is it because of IBIS unit is not parked in this camera by design?
The IBIS in the Zf doesn't lock in place when the camera is off like on other Z cameras. Apparently it was left out due to space limitations so hopefully other future cameras from Nikon will still have locking IBIS
coming from a Z6 i noticed that rattling too. i hope that doesn't become an issue long-term.
i wonder if you'd have a look at my comment in this thread about humming in the area of the EVF and let me know if yours has that too?
I love the Zf but I have found a problem for me. There is no "Recall Shooting Functions" so you can't set up a button to disable Subject Detection on the fly. You have to go into menus to do it.
On the Z8 you can configure a button to be 3D Tracking with no Subject Detection to focus on an object almost the same as the Subject Tracking on the Z6 and Z7's. With the Subject Detection on the camera will want to detect a person still.
If you still have any clout with Nikon ask them to put this feature in. It is only Nikon full frame that can't do it. It is the only thing stopping me from snapping up a second one.
Sure will be addressed via firmware!
The polarised glasses "issue" you note will be because two polarised lenses (or screen) at 90deg to one another prevent light coming through.
Any idea if it overheats quickly when shooting 10 Bit 4K video?
I'm surprised that you say it's not possible to have the shutter completely silent when, when I tried it in the store, I thought it wasn't taking any photos because I couldn't hear it at all. It was when I saw the photos that I realized I was in silent mode.
I just haven’t tried it a lot in silent. Usually it’ll introduce things like rolling shutter, and potentially banding. Maybe this doesn’t though
The only thing I haven't cared for is auto ISO. I like to leave it on auto ISO but I'd love to use the actual dial to override if needed. I had to map the front function button to toggle auto ISO on and off in order to do that. Too many steps.
Only that I sometimes have to chimp to check its taken the shot!!!
It does not have silent mode? Which one of nikon have?
So if you shoot black and white the raw turns onto color ? Or you have to import from second slot the JPEG ?
Raw file is colour
You can set the zf to silent shutter. I set it to be in the i menu
Have you had any issues with silent shutter?
I wanna purchase green, someone said it's kinda low quality leather.I wonder is it the same with the black leather.
I think green is sold out in Canada and USA now (not sure where you are in the world) so maybe that makes the decision for you haha
@@TaylorJacksonPhoto im in EU, i was just wondering is it slightly better if its black version leather.I don't wanna make mistake and purchase another zfc, if you know what i mean.
Having held one in store, this camera is huge and way heavier than my XE2 + XF35 1.4, so I don't know why ppl are calling it small and I'm talking about just the body.
Put this camera in a Z6 body for 2K, and I’d preorder immediately.
Amigo, estou querendo a z6ii para passar as fotos, ainda no evento, pro celular. Quero que o cliente receba umas 100 fotos ainda na festa. sabe se no app é rápido nesse processo?
you say its better auto focus than z6ii.. but how much better ?
There are a lot of examples of the autofocus in this video. If you’ve used the z6ii you’ll see the differences
I’d say about 4 feet
Just from this video I can see it’s a big step up compared to my Z7 ii. Particularly with subjects more than a few metres from the camera.
i just saw some one made a comparison today and its easy 10% better for far away people and identical for any close up subjects , credit to @Touch Life Studio @@TaylorJacksonPhoto
There is a silent mode on the ZF.
Tim!!!
Tim in a curtain
This mans so rich, he didnt even ask for a discount on a $2000 camera.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Does this camera always flicker when taking pictures? Stopped watching after 5 minutes.
He‘s shooting with mechanical shutter. That will cause a blackout. There‘s no avoiding that .
@@romanpul Ok, fair.
All cameras except those with stacked sensor me suffer from black out. It’s not really an issue.
Что ты рассказываешь, ничего не понятно
Dont need a ZF. For what? For Retro? 🤣
It does everything you need for weddings. Just happens to come in retro styling
I can understand how it would appeal to some. Unlike that DF, which was ridiculously overpriced for what it was, this makes sense
