Thanks @Andrew for putting this review together. I've just updated our a7s III's from a pre 2.15 firmware, all the way up to 3.0. Excited to try out some of the new features! I wanted to share a tip that many of your viewers may find useful. For reasons that I'm unsure of, my camera some how defaulted to PAL only. It took me a moment to understand that was why I could only select "rec frame rates" of 50p and 25p. To fix this for anyone looking for the additional frame rates, go to the Utility section in the menu (little suitcase icon) -> Area/Date, and NTSC/PAL Selector. Select NTSC and you should get all the frame rates back from 24p to 120p. Hope that helps!
No problem! Interesting, that could be dependent on the version of the camera/market it was sold in (or language/time region it's set to) attempting to select a default based on that.
Thanks for the video! Is there a way to dial in the shutter speed to help with flickering lights like how you can with the A74? Also is there a benefit to filming DCI 4K instead for UHD?
No problem! Unfortunately the variable shutter feature isn't in the a7S III, but you can try other shutter speeds to see if that helps. DCI 4K gets you a couple hundred more pixels horizontally (and a slightly wider looking aspect ratio), but otherwise not a huge difference.

Super nice that you can now use the unfolded screen to focus while looking in the viewfinder. Thank you for showing me the opportunity. It bothered me for a long time that you have to have the screen facing the camera for the viewfinder to work.
Solid update, but the best improvements were undocumented in the notes: the viewfinder Auto 1 setting finally allows you to switch between all shooting modes without ever needing to change it manually again. And 1/48 shutter is great, but what was the point of adding 1/96 shutter when the camera doesn't shoot 48fps? And since it shoots 120p instead, where's the 1/240 shutter?
Definitely a lot of hidden gems that went undocumented. I do wonder if the shutter speed additions are a precursor to a later shutter angle implementation, but that's just me speculating.
It does shoot 48fps with the DCI 4K/24p mode. If you set it to 24p, then you get 48fps in S&Q. Also, like Andrew said in the video, 1/96 represents a 90 degree shutter for 24p, which is something you might want to utilize for a kinetic, action type of shot or if you want to be able to see rain drops or snow fall, that kind of thing

Great video, thanks Andrew! If you were purchasing in 2024, would you still buy the A7siii and then use these firmware updates, or buy the A7iv? The A7siii is considerably cheaper here in the UAE than the FX3 (even brand new). Like most here, I also dig the FX line, but being in Dubai, having an EVF is pretty much necessary if/when shooting outdoors during the day...The A7c ii looks decent, though it sadly is not compatible with the Atomos Ninja series (tho the A7cr is, which is strange). Subbed...Thank you in advance!
No problem, Chris! As a video camera, the a7S III is still a better buy than the a7 IV in terms of low light, resolution/frame rate options, handling overheating, etc. If you do more photo/hybrid work, could be a different story. Thanks for the video Andrew. I gotta say, just like a lot of people out there, I'm truly disappointed. They could have released it on April 1st, because it's a joke. Anamorphic desqueeze, animal, bird eye AF, Wass it hard to put in? Didn't FX3 and FX30 get it? Breathing compensation, yeah great, but it crops. Everything else is basically a niche update. Shameful.
No problem, supposedly there are some hardware limitations that explain certain things being absent (e.g. animal/bird eye AF, FX3 doesn't have it either). Definitely some open questions though on other features the FX3/FX30 has that still have yet to make it to the a7S III.
Nothing major in terms of features, but on the a7 IV it does keep your settings. I wouldn't rush to do it, but something still good to do in the long run (it'll help with later updates).
@@andrewsaraceni so i wasnt far off, felt pressure seen everyone updating their cameras, I look forward to your later updates, you share solid content on the A7IV, thank you sir
Anyone with A7SIII experiencing an ISO bug (Native ISO remap to 80 and 1600) which results in a very noisy ProRes Raw footage after 3.0 update when recording in PRORES RAW with NINJA V (or any other bug after 3.0 update), I just spoke with a Sony rep on the phone. He said they had very few people contact them with this issue, and they are compiling evidence. So please go to Sony Support in your country (I'm in the US), contact the support (I did it through chat), describe the problem, and make them create a support ticket (don't get satisfied with their default troubleshooting attempts). The rep also said that having a well-made video demonstrating the problem is a big plus!
I've heard about this as well, but haven't gotten to try ProRes RAW recording with the a7S III since the upgrade. Hoping Sony (or Atomos?) has a fix at some point.
Cine EI mode is probably the closest thing to that, although you only have two ISOs to choose from at that point. I wouldn't mind seeing it in their Alphas bodies.
Before I updated Firmware I was able to see both my (SLOT 1 & SLOT 2) on the display screen. Now it only shows SLOT 1 😔 how can I make it show both again on the a7siii. I really miss that little feature showing both available recording times
I think that's a design choice/limitation with the new screen layout - it's similar now on other newer Sony cameras, and depends on what your recording settings are in terms of what's displayed.
@@andrewsaraceni awww mann….i miss that little detail. now I have to go all the way in the settings to see how much memory on the second SD card versus seeing it on the display. If you find out how to do it please do share
Before the new update, in videography mode ,when I changed the AF from the lens to the MF ( mode in the video mode ), "PEAK" appeared with the red color that I had previously determined, and again when I changed the focus from the lens of MF to the AF mode, "PEAK" was turned off . But after the update, when I turn on "PEAK", remains in both mode ( MF and AF ) and Don't be off automaticlly in AF . where is the problem from ?
It's not a "problem" per se, Sony changed the behavior for the a7 IV and other cameras going forward, so it looks like it was intentionally rolled out to the a7S III now as well.
After this update when i want to shoot 4k 100fps 10 bit 4:2:2 in slot -1 with v60 card it shows please use v90 or higher but when i use slot -2 then v60 card can record… what is the issue I didn’t understand?
You might have different record settings set for each slot. e.g. Regular movie recording on one and proxies on another. But you can film with a V60 card if you change the codec to XAVC S or HS (just not XAVC S-I). Probably worth checking.
i thought that we would at least get a shutter angle option.... the rest is meh to be honest the most important features to me are : 1) shutter angle 2) shutter curtain that closes to switch lenses 3) personal luts 4) exporting luts via hdmi the rest to be fair is not life changing
Shutter Angle is supposed to come later in the fall. I would say you're still better off having Breathing Compensation and some of the other new features than not.
@@andrewsaraceni yeah, than transferred the installation file to the SD card and the camera registered that there was a license there automatically, so I just pressed "ok" and everything was alright ☺️

Great video. Wow seeing that crop in focus breathing mode was a good reminder to use it sparringly. I do like the new on screen menu and that dust shutter. Shame DCI 4k needs V90s as my v60s where good enough for 4k 120. Really barely worth the efford for upgrading but just about. Wish they would give us anamorphic desqueeze!

If you mean your previous camera settings before v3, you won't be able to load those. You could either start from scratch, or I have settings on my website you could download for free.
Might depend on the codec? I know V90s don't support a few options in XAVC S-I in S&Q mode (e.g. 4K 120p). Otherwise though, my ProGrade V90s work fine in all the expected resolutions, frame rates, etc.
i have both the sIII and an FX3 and though i really like both, i am very annoyed with sony's lack of usable updates! would i buy updated bodies probably but i would not rush out as i did with these!........ would i ever buy a canon, never! however, if DJI made compact full frame body cinema camera, my love of sony would end right away! i have their drone, pocket 2 and 3 and action 4 and they are all loaded with all the usable features from the start!
Sony's Cine division has actually done a really good job with keeping their bodies up-to-date, e.g. the FX3, FX30. It's the Alpha line that's fallen behind, and hopefully, this is the start of more/better things to come.
That'd be a curious choice, considering it's free/included on much cheaper, newer models now. Though unlike custom gridlines, it's something a lot of people probably would pay for.
This update came way too late, This should have released back when it was released to the FX line. Its so odd to have different firmwares for all the sony cameras instead of making just one for all... Sold my sIII for the a7cII and don't regret it
Thanks for showing all the new updates, I wish there was more for the A7IV since it's still my main go to camera!! Hey Sony, how about custom LUTs and false color!!!! @@andrewsaraceni but if that with card is possible can you upload it in your website so we can download it? Also will be helpful a new video for that camera because i notice that i menu now with update is a lot of changes
@@bluetvsports That's ultimately up to Sony to host it, and that it can be installed easily. I do think that's something that could be improved on, but I would try it from the website if the app didn't work, or vice versa.
I own both, but I think I'll be holding onto the a7S III for a long time.
@@andrewsaraceni Awesome - Yes, I shoot video at least 75% of the time, and already have an A7c for stills anyways. Thank you for your super-quick response!
Tank you for mentioning the shutter curtain! Just a question... The touch menù comes up swiping on the screen, but how is it possibile to switch it off? Thanks in advance for your kind answer!
No problem! You can adjust, disable it, etc. in Setup > Touch Operation > Touch Panel Settings > Shooting Screen.
you can set "touch screen" function to it's own custom button to switch off/on that "touch" menu. It has helped a lot. Hope this was useful. Cheers!
Fantastic video mate
Thanks Jeremy!
Wow! Thank you for sharing this info!
No problem!
How is the update and the APP working after a few weeks?
The update's been fine - used the a7S III on a couple of jobs since, and it's been flawless. App is still good as well.
The A7iv update also added peaking while in AF mode
I'm pretty sure the a7 IV always handled peaking that way (that was the model Sony changed the behavior on it, IIRC).
Do you know why the option to protect the sensor is not selectable for me?
So long as you updated the firmware, it should be. You see the option, but just can't select it?
@@andrewsaraceni It was because I had set the shutter to Silent. Unfortunately it's one or the other!
Does Catalyst Browse still work on A7siii after this update? An update last year for Fx3 rendered Catalyst Browse useless with the Fx3 until a fix came out I think.
Haven't gotten to try it yet since the update - is there something specific you use it for (e.g. stabilization)?
I did install new firmware but I am unable to activate DCI 4k from creators app. It says bluetooth malfunction error on camera. Any remedy?
You could try installing it from the Creators website, downloading to an SD card and loading into the camera.
Late to the party here but is it possible to turn off peaking when using AF-C? The old firmware did but not now. Can't see an option to set this manually anywhere.
Not specifically for AF-C, but peaking is now either on or off, regardless of whether you're in AF or MF. You can set it in Focus > Peaking Display.
@@andrewsaraceni Also, it now doesn't display the S&Q frame rate on the main display. AND it doesn't hold the settings when switching between video and stills modes. Am I wrong? But it seems like Sony have gone early with this firmware release. Just like they did with the latest FX6 firmware.
@@TomWalshFilm Yeah I think they missed a few small things testing/QC-wise. Which can happen with a big update like this, although they were working on this firmware update for months (if not longer).
Thanks a lot Andrew! Very helpful :)
No problem Claudio, glad to hear it helped!
Whoa why hasn't anyone else mentioned these sick features? Closed Shutter on Release??? 1/48???? Shutter Angle confirmed to come later? Cause that'd be cool. Thank you very much for this video \o/
No problem! I'm surprised Sony didn't advertise these items more either.
Hi,
Maybe You can help - Switching between still images and movies (View Mode)
Sets the View Mode (image display method).
MENU → (Playback) → [Playback Target] → [View Mode] → desired setting.
This Was possible in 2.01 now in 3.01 I cant change veiw mode what equals that I can't see movei lenght in playback...
Try toggling up on the DISP dial when viewing your movies in playback, there should be an option that shows the movie timing/length to display.
@@andrewsaraceni Hi, already tried it. Not showing timing.
One more thing to add. The formatting on CF express cards is super fast now like my R5. Use to chug!!
Good to know that applies to CF Express Type A as well - I only tested with V90 cards when I mentioned it around the 8:05 mark.
@@andrewsaraceni yeah this is way better
If I do not like the result of update and I run Camera Settings Reset will I get the firmware I had before I ran Firmware Update?
No, at that point it'll reset the settings to factory defaults, but on the latest firmware version you have installed.
Great explainer. Thank you! Close shutter on power off. Yessssss! (Nobody else had mentioned that!)
No problem, Arlo! I'm glad they added that to the a7S III as well. 🙂
They also added Flexible Exp. Mode in Menu > Shooting > 4 Shooting Mode > Exposure Ctrl Type
Interesting, good catch - that would align with the FX3 and FX30. Didn't notice since I mostly only use manual, especially for video.
this is not new at all
Peaking focus assist it is a big stupidity in the mod auto focus
Not sure what you mean, are you referring to the change to show focus peaking regardless of being in MF or AF?
Having peaking ONLY in MF mode was great as we know which mode we are in 😒
Now we have to toggle both mf/af and peeking on/of
@@SoniStudiormp It takes some getting used to, for sure. I have used peaking in AF though, so I think there's a benefit to it.
Definitely some open questions though on other features the FX3/FX30 has that still have yet to make it to the a7S III.
what are your thoughts on the Sony A7IV new firmeware?, almost feels like it isnt worth upgrading it and lose my settings or am i wrong?
Nothing major in terms of features, but on the a7 IV it does keep your settings. I wouldn't rush to do it, but something still good to do in the long run (it'll help with later updates).
@@andrewsaraceni so i wasnt far off, felt pressure seen everyone updating their cameras, I look forward to your later updates, you share solid content on the A7IV, thank you sir
any idea if A7C is getting any new firmware updates?
I would suspect not, given it's based on older hardware, processor, etc. a7C II going forward I would expect to though.
I wish they made a preset to remove specific noisier Iso when filming slog. Like removing 1600-10000iso
Cine EI mode is probably the closest thing to that, although you only have two ISOs to choose from at that point. I wouldn't mind seeing it in their Alphas bodies.
@@andrewsaraceni Got it thank you
CAN SOMEONE PLEASE EXPLAIN HOW TO USE THE TIMECODE FEATURE
That is exactly the one thing I was looking forward and can't find any proper info. Is the timecode embedded into the file? Is it an xml timecode?
its available for a7RV too?
Unfortunately no update for the a7R V...yet.
Anti-dust function is grayed out on my A7s iii. Any clues on how to enable it?
Oh....And I am subscribed. You know how to tackle the details. 8-)
@@FollowTheJohn Thanks for the sub! Is silent shutter on? Pretty sure you'd have to turn it off to enable it.
@@andrewsaraceni Ah. I’ll check.

@@andrewsaraceni very accurate description,again
If you find out how to do it please do share
funny how sony gave a7s3 quick menu screen en new menu layout but not for the a7iv users its really crazy
I'm hoping it'll make its way to the a7 IV in a future update. 🤞
😐😐😐😐😐Thanks for Answer. What Sony did is wired !!!@@andrewsaraceni
Will my Wasabi batteries work with the update?
Can't say I've gotten to try those specifically.

I appreciate that, thanks for the sub!
Probably worth checking.
the gamma assist in quick menu is missing!
I see it on mine - bottom right corner on Main1 (above the mic volume) - it'll say Assist Auto if it's in auto to select the PP.
@@andrewsaraceni just found out it can be setting haha!
The quick button switch from slot 1 and 2 is gone :(
Gone from where? I see it in Main2 on the new Quick Menus. You can reprogram any custom button settings you had.
i thought that we would at least get a shutter angle option.... the rest is meh to be honest
the most important features to me are :
1) shutter angle
2) shutter curtain that closes to switch lenses
3) personal luts
4) exporting luts via hdmi
the rest to be fair is not life changing
Shutter Angle is supposed to come later in the fall. I would say you're still better off having Breathing Compensation and some of the other new features than not.
I was able to install the DCI license by using the SD card and my Mac… 💁🏼♂️
Interesting...you downloaded it from the Creators app website? They must be steering folks towards the app (but other options still exist).
@@andrewsaraceni yeah, than transferred the installation file to the SD card and the camera registered that there was a license there automatically, so I just pressed "ok" and everything was alright ☺️
I was able to as well, just put it on the CF Type A card on the camera and as soon as unplugged it from my mac and turned it on it auto-detected it.
@@andrewsaracenime too. Didn’t use my phone once. I installed everything from my Mac.
Would it also work on a SD card instead of CF Express? Do you put it in any folder on the card?
Now we need cinema menu (anamorphic, shutter angle, leave onky true iso). This camera is so good they just need to go a bit more with software
Agreed, I'd love to see that myself.
@@andrewsaracenido they really not have a desqueeze option for anamorphic lenses in the Sony a7siii I just bought a 35 mm Siriu lens…
@@leifhansen6532 Your best bet is to probably either use an external monitor that has it, or Sony's Monitor & Control app I believe can do it now as well.
Thanks! You are the man!
No problem, Michael!
Thanks! I do wonder why DCI 4K was only implemented with XAVC S-I, since XAVC S and HS support V60s and V30s even to various degrees.
After the update, I lost Bluetooth functionality and the viewfinder’s view. Can you please lemme know how to fix it

@@andrewsaraceni sure thanks
anamorphic de-squeeze would have been nice - FX3 has this now
Yeah definitely a few FX3 features that should still be brought over, I think.
In order to use DCI mode CF express type A must be inserted instead of SDXC - that one more caveat 😏 still veeery expensive. Cheers
That's true in S&Q mode for slow motion. but V90's still work fine in DCI 4K regular movie recording (I tested this myself).
Still no anti flicker?
Yeah, somewhat surprised they didn't add that yet.
No shutter angle or LUT
The one thing I wanted (custom luts) is not there. Couldn’t care about just about everything else you went through, besides maybe the sensor protection.
I'm hoping Sony listens/gets the memo on custom LUTs, probably by far the most requested missing feature at this point.
I have saved the settings but it won't load on Ver 3.0.
If you mean your previous camera settings before v3, you won't be able to load those. You could either start from scratch, or I have settings on my website you could download for free.
Sony, Give recording to external SSD via USB-C!!
👏Would love to see this myself.
@@andrewsaraceni Will only happen when sony starts selling SSDs, and the cameras won't record in any other manufacturers disk.
Major! Is animal eye detect fixed!
😞
Not yet, it's the same on the FX3 also.
Safe to say, this will be the last FW update for S3
The Animal eye detect in video is still not working
Supposedly there may be hardware, processing, etc. limitations that prevent them from adding that. It's still that way in the FX3 as well.
nice video
Thanks!
does anyone have problem with sd card, i use angel bird v90 and after update i cant record in 100fps
Might depend on the codec? I know V90s don't support a few options in XAVC S-I in S&Q mode (e.g. 4K 120p). Otherwise though, my ProGrade V90s work fine in all the expected resolutions, frame rates, etc.
@@andrewsaraceni i put in slot2 and its works now 🤨 i use XAVC S
Sony did not make that clear, I was wondering why 3.0.1 firmware came with 2.1.5
Yeah it's a step-by-step upgrade process to the new firmware, but much easier going forward after that.
Can we load luts on camera?
Unfortunately not...I'm hoping that'll change in a future update.
i have both the sIII and an FX3 and though i really like both, i am very annoyed with sony's lack of usable updates! would i buy updated bodies probably but i would not rush out as i did with these!........ would i ever buy a canon, never!
however, if DJI made compact full frame body cinema camera, my love of sony would end right away! i have their drone, pocket 2 and 3 and action 4 and they are all loaded with all the usable features from the start!
Sony's Cine division has actually done a really good job with keeping their bodies up-to-date, e.g. the FX3, FX30. It's the Alpha line that's fallen behind, and hopefully, this is the start of more/better things to come.
Too little too late Sony. They deserve no praise
Maybe custom luts would be a paid feature.
Sold my sIII for the a7cII and don't regret it
I hope Sony gets the memo of not letting models fall behind like this going forward. a7C II is a great camera to move to though (I love my a7 IV).
Thanks for showing all the new updates, I wish there was more for the A7IV since it's still my main go to camera!! Hey Sony, how about custom LUTs and false color!!!! Edit: I just remembered that I created a LUT using Photoshop that simulates different styles of FalseColor, so just the custom LUT feature would work to add FalseColor!
No problem, David! I'm hoping there's (a lot...) more to come re: updates on the a7 IV as well.
good
Thanks!
thank god we have the 1/48 shutter speed

i'm not gonna lie but i was planing to get the fx3 just to have the shutter angle for 24 fps, but now i'm so happy 😀 @@andrewsaraceni
Idk why so many people care about 24p. As a cinematographer if my projects won’t be shown on a DCP in a theater than 24p is useless vs 23.976
I do wonder how many people actually use it instead of 23.98, though I know it was well-requested on the FX3, etc. before it was added, and these cameras have been used in some higher-end productions.
@@andrewsaraceni ya I get it for applications that need it. But many cinematographers will shoot 23.976 especially if it is for a streaming service show
