- Akai MPC Live ships with a SATA bay allowing for the install of an SSD or HDD drive. Here I explain how to install, format and then access the newly installed hard drive

Thank you
I appreciate your help with this video because I Just got an Akai force and I was trying to figure out how to format my 500 gig SSD drive
Dope vid! FYI, you don't need to fully format a brand new drive tho. Full format just does a check for bad sectors, which is the portion of the operation that takes so much time.
On a brand new drive like shown here, a quick format would be fine and have you up and running in a matter of minutes. If installing a previously used drive, it's a good idea to test the disk first, but there are far faster options to scan for bad sectors than allowing disk management to perform a full format. HDTune is free can perform this task and has the benefit of visual feedback as well.
Side note for those installing SSDs.. definitely do NOT perform a full format! Only quick format the disk. An SSD will not need a bad sector check like a mechanical drive, and a full format actually adds wear to the NAND chips.
Overall, dope video, salute! Keep grinding!

My live is on the way!! Can't wait
Man I have been searching all this time for a vid like this.. everybody shows how to put in a ssd but not how to get it format it...thanks a lot bro
Thanks man. All the other videos left me clueless on the formatting part. I thought I had a bad hdd. Props dude 🙏
Yessir
Thank you so much, made life easy for me!
Thanks so much! I accidentally ran across this video. I had already installed a 1 TB hard drive in my Live a while back, but it was not recognizing it. Now I see why. I couldn't help but laugh when you got to the part about the screws. When you stopped, I knew what you were about to say. Where are the screws?! I'm holding my hard drive in with gaffers tape, until my screws come in that I ordered. I just ordered a little pack of dell laptop hard drive screws for like $3 from amazon. That was a brilliant move using the screws from an old keyboard. I ransacked my house trying to find screws until I gave up and temporarily taped it in. That's what we do in Alabama. When all else fails, bust out the duct tape. Haha Anyway, great info man!
Definitely! Duct tape gets stuff done!
Thanks for this - it cleared up my confusion. I wrongly assumed that the MPC-X would let me format the SATA drive. Nope. BTW, the X does come with mounting screws - looked like the Live did not.
Thank you very much ! I just got my MPC X . And this will help me a lot . You did a Outstanding Video . I have a lot of gear , pro composer for over 30 years . But MPC , is new for me . Kind Regards, Totally Kenny .
Thanks and enjoy. Had X on preorder for a loooong time now
thx man, had no idea how to do this. helped a lot...
useful vid, thanks bro
Can you install the desk top hard drive?
Ah just asked about this in the last video . Watching Now :)
super super helpful thank you!
Thanks for the videos!!!!
Ooh Rah Marine💯💪🏼
+Cdrive Semper Fi
Once again great vid :)
Much appreciated
FYI to anyone reading these comments before doing this. formatting a seagate barracuda 2 tbs SATA, 6gbs/s, 128mb cache, 7200 rpm hdd on win10 & an older laptop it took 20 hours to format.
20 hours is crazy for anybody expecting it to just happen at the push of a button. Good point.
Screws are in the box..(included)
Wow...so glad I have a mac...way less steps and less time required.
I also have a Mac desktop and MacBook Pro. I use PC for recording due to it being highly upgradable.
Just got my live 3 days ago and just installed my old 300 gb hdd from an old laptop I had today. I didn't format it yet because I wasn't sure how until now. Now this old hdd has windows 7 and a bunch of other old garbage on it. It registers as connected when I power up my live and I see all that old stuff. My concern is will a format make this usable to me. Or will I have issues clearing this hdd. I'm going to follow your process and hope for the best. I've subscribed to your channel and look forward to following up. Peace!
thx for the info!
I wonder if formatting an SSD would be quicker.
+Easton Martin Not sure. I'd imagine the size of the drive storage would be more of an indicator of format time, but worth some research
Easton Martin I installed a 500gb crucial ssd ($149 on Amazon), and the format happened literally in the blink of an eye. I went with ssd because it uses WAY less power than a standard hhd, which means longer battery life for the Live
+Tubasco Good to know. I went with HDD because I've heard others say they've had an SSD stop working and the data was not retrievable, but with an HDD there was a better likelihood of getting it to spin up and retrieve the data from it. This may vary based on many factors though
Thanks man. Very helpful!
snoop dog is quite handy with a screwdriver haha
Fuck i did the quick format! that was the only option i thought. dos it matter??
Rob, in the function time stretch, any way i can tell the mpc to use the q-link nobs to change the bpm parameters? The big nob is not so nice to use and the + and - is a pain...or can i use the pads to input numbers? thanks
I've only been able to have the big encoder knob and the + and - manipulate the parameters in the time stretch window
yeah i guess thaz it, thank you for the reply
I turned on my mpc live the other day
To continue work from the night before and when it machine turned on it took longer then usual to do. Next thing that happened was all my project file and data libraries staples ect that was on the internal hard dive was missing. Is there any way i can get the data slavaged or recovered from the built in hardrive even if the files dont show up on the screen?
For people with MAC OSX... Catalina or otherwise, here is the way to get it done: ruclips.net/video/62egFHH2qPU/видео.html
Mine looks hella different inside, it had like a black cover to kinda protect everything from dust, did you remove that?
Yo Rob i have a live and i was wondering if your able to steam music from the hard drive like on the 5000 i have a 64gig sd but you can only preview
What's up yo got a question, can I use a large sd card, thumb drive or external hard drive to save and load to and from instead of installing the internal hard drive?
Definitely. I'm using an SD card on it as well. Have had no problem at all with SD of thumb drive
Rob Campbell - R. Camizzi awesome I keep seeing on mpc forums people's ssd drives are ejecting when saving and ssd issues I'm not planning on installing if I can use thumb, hard drive, or external instead. Thanks.
could you use a old MacBook laptop drive for this as iv got a old one doing nothing ? thanks
Not sure, but I doubt it. I’m sure you’d need a mounting kit to do it
Do you know if I have to eject the SATA drive by clicking eject on my computer whenever I switch from controller mode to standalone mode? There's always that Switch To Standalone Mode window asking me to please ensure you have safely ejected all storage devices from your MPC hardware before you switch back to Standalone Mode. I tried it both ways, but I wanted to know the correct way. When I proceeded without ejecting I got an error msg on my Mac saying that I didn't eject properly. When I proceeded with ejecting before going in to standalone mode, my SATA drive didn't show up on my MPC Live.
Thanks in advance!
I figured it out! I've been using the Crucial MX300, and from what I've been seeing in forums people are experiencing the same issue as I me. I returned the Crucial MX300, and just picked up a Samsung EVO 850. It is installed, and reformatted to exFAT and works great!... So far.
+Dustin Valdez good you got it figured out
my ninja marine intel salvaging that's whats up bro
Bro SSD!
weird mine came in screws
Good evening My Akai brethren . I notice you skip quick format, is there a specific reason why. What are the benefits of full Format vs Quick format.
+Sekare Shemsi I would only use a quick format on a drive that has been previously formatted in the same filing system. That option would only be used to erase unneeded files from the drive.
Rob Campbell - R. Camizzi Quick format doesn't actually delete files from the disk, just the partition table. A quick formatted drive can have its entire contents recovered if no new data has been written to it. A fully formatted drive on the other hand.... different story lol.
Overall; new HDDs and SSDs are completely safe to quick format. Previously used drives, your instructions are valid and a full format would be a good idea. Clean slate!
I spoke to Akai Tech. He said format SATA disc as Fat32 not ExFat. I asked him twice.
