Aaaaah , i remember the heady days of hunting vinyl breaks down , forking out £2000 for an MPC2000XL STUDIO PLUS using a tiny letterbox screen and every sample sounded full of "THAT" mpc bitcrunch character ( on everything ,even if you just wanted a clean sample) and having to store a project in 3 different files on floppy discs or a zip drive that was always a challenge to find later. Then came flash drives , nice . THEN CAME THE NEW MPC'S ,like inventing the wheel ! so easy ! so quick! and you have gigs of storage , blimey now you can add a terrabyte / bite if you like , . . . . . . . . . i can make beats in the garden now ! my entire studio is almost redundant . . . thousands of pounds worth of vintage synths, mixing desk, drum machines, analogue sequencers, midiboxes, effects units. I use the MPC X now but the LIVE more than anything as it is just so handy.
Kids nowadays don't know how lucky they are , you can make music with almost anything now and so cheap.Back in the day you had to REALLY be determined and scrimp and save for your passion, then try and figure it all out without TUBEDIGGA and knowledge like this shared through altruism . I remember when it was all fields around here , and we used to bash flints together . . . . . blah blah . . . .waffle waffle . . ..zzzzzzz zzzz

Dude, thank you for this video. I was driving myself absolutely nuts trying to figure out how to delete loaded Sounds and plug-ins out of memory. I was working on a song and loaded up some sounds to see what they sounded like, and if I could use them in the sequence… But couldn’t figure out how to get rid of them once I loaded them in. Your video, thankfully showed me how to do that. I was up to 99% memory full. For no other reason then, I was just testing out those symptoms while I was working on my song. Which then filled up the memory and essentially stop my workflow because I couldn’t load anything else in, and I couldn’t record any audio input because of the lack of memory. Essentially putting the project at a stand still.
So, I went in to the main mode and went through my list of plug-ins and key groups, and got rid of everything I wasn’t using. Which was quite a bit… And then I purged all of the samples I wasn’t using and it took my memory down to 33%. So again, thank you. This has been driving me nuts for weeks and I finally got around to looking on RUclips to figure this out. They really shouldn’t make it this tough. I know one of the techs that work at a Akai and he’s always told me that if I think of something new that I want in the software or something that could be easier or fixed… To let him know.
I’m using both the MPCX and the MPC key 61 and we should be able to simply load up the list of sounds that are in memory and be able to use the delete button to delete them out of memory without purging or anything else. It shouldn’t be as difficult as it is. So that’s going to be the first thing that I tell him. The second is, showing the channel mixer screen, using as many faders as they can put horizontally across the screen that essentially mimics any DAW mixing screen. Instead of the archaic pad/block format. It would be easier to play with the volumes for each track and would look a hell of a lot better.
If there’s anything you can think of, that you would like included in the software or a firmware update… Please let me know, and I will forward it on to him and he will let me know whether or not he thinks it’s possible. But the two things that I just mentioned are a definite.
I hate how the channel mixer screen is laid out. I’ve always hated it from day one. Why they didn’t think to put a row of at least eight faders plus a main volume control, I’ll never know. At least give people the option to see them either way. same thing goes for the main mode track screen. Which we should have the option to have them show as they are vertically… Or choose to have the tracks shown as faders, horizontally across the screen with the track name underneath. Also, with panning knobs above the tracks and track arm or record buttons. So we can easily choose the track. We want to record and have the volume for at least eight tracks easily in front of us, so that we can touch and control the volumes quickly. Exactly how they would be laid out in any DAW. For a quicker workflow if you just want to use the drum machine or keyboard in the MPC key 61’s case. Without a computer.
Generally, when I’m on the road, or even taking the keyboard with a battery pack over to the beach to get some inspiration… I just use it to record everything. So the quicker and easier it is, the better. I think anybody would agree with that. I also wish they would have included an HDMI out with the MPC key, 61 and the MPC X. Allowing us to have an external larger monitor, and maybe choose resolutions that we can view it at on the external monitor. Or even an external touchscreen, for which I have a 4K HDR, 13 inch battery powered touch screen, that would be perfect for it. It would also be nice to be able to use a keyboard and a mouse for quick clicking and access. I realize that many people use a DAW for most of their recordings, but I am one of those people who will use the keyboard to get the entire idea for the song down and maybe transfer everything, if I need sounds or something else from the PC. but I do use it a lot in order to simply record the entire song. It’s nice to have that sort of power on the road or wherever I am. Without having to jump into the PC.
One of these days, I’m going to open up my MPC key, 61 and figure out how it is configured. If it’s just a PC inside, like many workstations are these days… It may already have an HDMI out in it. For which I would attach a short male to female cable in order to Dremel the hole to permanently mount the HDMI out to. If it is a PC inside the MPC key 61, I will do a video showing what I discover and see if I can’t add more system, memory to the keyboard itself.
I originally was thinking about keeping the MPCX over the MPC key 61 and just buying the new plug-ins and sounds for it. But I didn’t realize that the MPCX only has 2 GB of memory as opposed to the 4 GB of memory in the MPC key 61. So if it is a PC motherboard inside, more than likely, I can either take the memory that’s in an out and add an 8 GB or more stick or just add extra ram via a second slot, if it has one. Also, see if I can expand the internal storage. Like with the Korg Kronos… It’s a SSD inside. Which can easily be swapped out for a NVME drive. Making loading the OS a hell of a lot faster.
I think I’m going to open it up in the next couple days and find out exactly how this thing is made. I am hoping for it being a PC running Linux inside. If that’s the case, I’ll be doing all sorts of upgrades. It would be awesome to be able to upgrade the ram to 8GB or even 16 GB or more. That will depend on the OS and if it were the motherboard can handle anything over 4 GB. If it is software limited, I will try to go into the software and change it. If it’s hardware limited, there’s not much you can do. But, should be able to upgrade the drive to an NVME, at the very least. Maybe.
In any case, sorry for the book. I love technology and seeing where I can push it. Especially when it comes to the MPC key 61. Because just a boost of memory to 8GB system RAM and that I could load that much more into system, memory… If need be. Obviously, it would be for some sort of outrageously huge project. For which I’d probably use the PC and the DAW anyways. But if I’m on the road, or at the beach, it would be nice to be able to not have to worry about any of that. So we will see. Again, if you can think of any you would like to see in the firmware and OS, let me know.

Hi, first of all thanks for the video. You got me thinking about memory a little. What happens to the unused samples if you "save as" with a project that has been saved before? May that be a way to get around the handy work of deleting samples from the folder?

had a force for a few weeks then today got ab mpc live 2 . they a cool in many ways but i absolutely can’t stand the memory process on these devices compared to all my other sampler and sequences . i just find basic usually quick procedures on my gear just a complete time consuming pain in the arse on akai’s . granted i need more time to use them , but for example i also received a dirtywave m8 today and was easily figuring it out without the manual just making really fun riffs right out the gate . ill keep trying a bit with the mpc but i have a short tolerance for gear that i personally find un intuitive. i had sold my first synthstrom deluge for the same reason previously until i listed to songs i made on it months later and realized how unique that thing made my stuff sound. that also has a lathe learning curve but seemingly not as bad as the mpc’s for me anyways.
It depends what you’re trying to do and in what order. Or it may just not resonate with you personally, but MPC is very easy once you understand the basics. Not sure why the memory is an issue, but you’re welcome to book some zoom time with me and I can show you the quickest ways to get your head round all the most important things.

Thanks for this. I’m currently having an issue and I’m wondering if anyone else has experienced this:
I’ve got a project with 14 completed songs (in wav format) which I’m trying to use for a performance. The songs were initially loaded into a clip program (I’ve tried just pads in a drum group as well) and play through fine.
The problem is very noticeable latency when applying XYFX. It lags enough to make “stuttering” etc offbeat. I’ve set the bpm of the song to the bpm in sequence etc and I’m not using warp (have tried that as well).
Is this just too many Tracks for the live internal memory to Handle?? I’ve got an SP404 and it doesn’t struggle in this manner in the least. Please help if you have any ideas.

So the guy I just bought my MPC LIVE 2 from seems to have saved a few things on the internal memory. (he never bothered to use an SD card or SSD).
I presently have 3.7 Gb left out of the 14.5 Gb available space on the Internal Memory.
How much space (mb / Gb) do you guys have left on your Internal Memory with all the 'necessary stuff' installed ?
I prefer to save everything onto my external sd/ssd drives and keep internal disks light and clean for top performance.
If my internal memory actually is overloaded above average I'd look for a way to format even the internal memory then have a fresh install of 2.10 .

Thanks for this. Really helpful. QQ about key groups. So if I have a professional key group in one track but I've just got a simple melody that's only say one octave, can I just remove all the other octaves?
Yes but you’d have to know which samples are being used before deleting any. I assume that’s your intention, to save RAM? Removing the keygroup pad tkemselves wont make any difference, just the samples. Just make sure you know which sample is being used in the octave range you wish to keep isn’t deleted. But it would be easy enough to load a single sample back in again.
or save new file to new location and completely delete old files from old location?
Even since back in the day on my MPC 1000, to now, MPC loading and saving as always confused me!
Say I have a bunch of stems I want to use for backing tracks (I put them into Audio Tracks), but the stems have a ton of silence in between them. I've been deleting out the silence to conserve memory -- can't actually tell if its helping. I'm not stupid to assume this is the case right? I wish there was a transient detector within the Audio Tracks, it would help a ton to quickly delete out silence, while keeping the audio in the right location. Or maybe I need to use the MPC software (sadly my computer is too old to run the latest software)
Split the full audio file into however many sections you need in sample edit mode - you can use chop mode set to threshold. Then save each section. Make a note of where each one should be placed on the timeline (using the original as an reference)and add them at those points (you can load multiple audio files to one audio track).
lot of good info, thanks, but , what if instead of (after getting rid of all the unused samples) you do the purge, then you save the purged file again with a different name and delete the original project file, then you would get rid of all the unused samples without having to go into the program file and delete them one by one?
Yeah I do that occasionally if I know I’ve saved a project with large samples that I hadn’t purged before the first save.
Instead of manually deleting samples from storage ( and risking deleting too much...) how bout re-saving the project? As in overwrite? Will it adjust the files in the project on storage?
Did you find an answer to this question? This was my initial thought as well. Or even re name it then then delete the old files from the ssd to clean it.
how to delete a preset that you have edited and saved?....
Here is what's crazy, I got this last week, I have kind of tinkered here and there, and made 1 song, with 6 tracks.... not even a song, 1 16 bar sequence with 6 tracks. An all instrumental kind of cover of Change is going to Come. Anyway... I ran out of space I was at 90% ram being used. That does not bode well for me moving forward.
There’s around 8-900mb of usable ram. That’s plenty even by today’s standards but you still have to be economical with the samples you record or import. Working with samplers since the late 80s thru to the mid 2000s would teach you this but many new users of samplers think you can just throw a ton of material in the machine and expect it work effortlessly. The truth is you have to think ahead, edit everything down, make loops so certain samples appear to last longer and discard / purge as much unused material as possible.
Great info on this video as always 🙏.....I have saved samples on my internal drive before I knew really what I was doing...😅 is there anyway to move them to my usb drive/ sd card that I’m now saving all samples on to save memory on the mpc one.
The only way to transfer data from the internal drive is to load it then save it back (SAVE AS) to your usb or SD

I’m assuming I create a new project with a new drum program in it with said samples in then save this project to usb drive.
@@jasonatkinson1356 When you save a project it saves any samples used in that project into the specific project data folder for that project. Deleting samples from the internal drive that are just on the drive and not in a project data folder will not affect any projects.

As a general rule of thumb. What should you save internally vs the SD card?
I've mentioned this many times in various different videos - the internal drive is best used either if you haven't got an SD card, USB drive or SSD to hand. The only exception is it is OK to save very low memory files such as insert effect files, midi files or synth presets to the internal drive. But for your main projects, associated project data and audio recordings, use some kind of removable storage media. Also, when using the MPC in controller mode for either use with the MPC Software or just to manage your files, the internal drive will not mount or be accessible/manageable or visible on your computer.

Purging is for samples you’ve loaded into any project. It has no effect on the factory content which uses the storage memory. And I wouldn’t recommend deleting that from the internal drive. Just get an SD card and save all your work to that.

Hi my mpc one keep crashing, disconnecting and freezing everytime after a while in controller mode after updating to mpc 2.10 firmware. But everything is fine when in standalone mode. Does this problems relate to internal storage of my mpc one? Or i must upgrade my macbook pro to catalina? Im in mojave now.
I have no idea, it could be many different things. First things to check and correct are making sure the software and firmware are the same version and make sure the latest USB drivers are installed (these are available in the MPC software installer).

What to do if the mpc live won’t let you upload any sounds because it’s low on memory?
If by upload you mean load into a project, then you need to do some housekeeping and purge some unused samples. You may have some really big files that you can cut down into smaller regions if you're not using the whole sample. There's no need to overload the RAM or ever go beyond 50%, you can make an entire album and more if you are disciplined and economical with the samples you use.
Hi, by mistake I deleted the files in the internal storage of mpc live. Could you please help me to restore it or let me know where and how to download and install them?

As a general rule of thumb I never really exceed 50% RAM, often it can cause issues with the system in general as the MPC now uses RAM to run the project and effects etc, not just for samples. If you've purged the unused samples and it is still maxing out the RAM, you will have to make some decisions as to what else can be edited down to smaller files or removed for something else that takes up less memory.
my pads lag BAD, and Im not using any memory at all. WTF is going on?

This is one of the few things that r very disappointing bout this wonderful product, never had this issue with Roland or yamaha, completely dashes the best workflow synth on the market, we shouldn’t really have to be doing all this extra stuff to try and save on ram usage , we wanna be creating good music, yet we can do 128 tracks on this unit, no way in hell this u it can do that, I do eight tracks and the mashing starts glitching up, sdpesnt make sense, why make a synth to do so many tracks, if it can handle it. Really dissapointed, Iam still gonna keep mine, and try and figure something out😢 any tips please leave in the comment
You have around 8-900mb of usable ram for samples - the rest of the 2gb total is used to run the sequences and effects etc. That’s a ton of ram even by todays standards and you can do a hell of a lot with it. Those who used samplers in the 80s and 90s would know how to make the most out of small samples and be economical and editing them down to only the material you need, and purging regularly. My projects rarely exceed 30% ram usage, in fact most don’t even go over 20%. I’ve released 6 fully fledged jungle / drum and bass tracks in the last 3 years on decent labels, all of which were produced in full on the MPC x or MPC One. Many people want to throw in a ton of samples and it just work but that’s not the reality. You have to do your housekeeping and be economical.
