Your Dior « theory » is absolutely right. I used to work for the brand so I can tell you this - more than 50% of the global revenue comes from handbags (so called « maroquinerie »). Since MGC came in, she focused on “reviving the archives” which basically means that she copied previous bag styles to replace former RAF Simons styles. The diorama, diorever and promenade are RAF’s heritage. She then launched (well, COPIED) the saddle bag (Galliano), the Lady Dior East West (from RAF again in 2014) and the Bobby is a former suggestion from the studio that had been declined a few years ago…. So they took the 2012 trainee inspiration for the Bobby. That’s the “creative” side of the story. On a strategy/finance/business perspective, their objective is to focus on seasonal pieces/product lines rather than permanent ones. They’ll always make sure to launch new products with short lifecycle to force clients to buy them and artificially create scarcity - in reality, there’s a mass production behind and most of the unsold stuff ends up being in the sale for employees 80% off…. For the permanent product lines like the lady Dior, the unsold pieces are being destroyed. That’s the reality of that business - producing and destroying. And here we go again. I lost faith in humanity after working for them.

I totally understand your point. And you are absolute right about everything you said. But I personally really like the idea of reviving or bringing back previous designs. That's a really clever way to make sales and staying true to the brand. I think the Diorama (already discontinued), Bobby, 30 Montagne are bags that will be discontinued very soon.
Dior should focus on their classics like the Lady Dior and release them in multiple colors, patterns and fabrics each season. They do so already but not enough in my opinion. I only wear bigger bags like the Lady Dior large. I'm tall and I just can't use tiny bags. Even the medium is tiny in my eyes 😂 But Dior hardly ever brings out new colors etc in their lager sizes. Id love a bright Lady Dior in a popping color or in a fabric like velvet for example. But they never do that. That's were I admire Hermès. They stick to their classics and release them in seasonal colors in all sizes (not all sizes but most). This is the reason why I love and pretty much only buy Hermès. I never had to play games or prove that I'm worthy to purchase a Birkin or a Kelly.
Fendi also is a good example.
Sticking with classic designs like the Birkin, Peekaboo, Lady Dior, Kelly is much more luxurious than releasing trend bags for a season or two.

What annoys me too is them changing the logo every other year… Personally I’m not comfortable spending thousands on pieces that won’t stand the test of time, so the changing of the logo really makes me think before buying.

@@ciccioblue absolutely - I call Dior the Zara of Luxury. Selling mass production. However I believe that « reviving the archives » as they say is total bullshit. They just don’t have ideas anymore. Plus they’ve been pushed by the LVMH group to increase revenue so much that they have no time for new stuff. Objective is PROFIT. In NO TIME.

I feel the exact same for the Hermes bags, I’m not going to beg someone to give them my money. Also the funny thing is, some Hermes bag owners inherited the ‘brand spirit’ and think people should beg for their friendship. I once met an older lady who seemed quite nice and as we were talking she started to tell me that her son has now grown up and has a girlfriend and moved out so she feels lonely, but she found a brilliant way to obtain new ‘friends’: young girls who would praise her and beg her and come to her house to play with her every day she would reward them with a chance to buy an Hermes bag, she will take the girl to her sa and say this is her daughter or close relative and sa will offer a bag for the girl to buy without having to build any records. After a while the sa probably knows she can’t have that many daughters but still played along since the older lady has bought too many random things that earned enough respect from the brand(she literally have Hermes stuff filled her house). To me this was so bizarre and I knew by casually telling me the story she was trying to recruit me as part of her fake daughter collection but I politely declined it was just too creepy to me, both the brand and the kind of perfect customer the brand obviously adores.

I purchased it bc it was a classic item but all your points on the bag it’s totally true! I hated how crumpled it look and the handles weren’t the most comfortable. Also, the opening was terrible. There’s so many other designs that are better and once I realized they’re just bags at the end of the day I was happy to let them go. Now I only keep and buy what really brings me joy, not bc it’s popular or a classic piece you should own.

I adore the speedy and neverfull. Both in canvas and leather. There’s a reason they’re so popular, because the styles are classic, comfortable and very usable (unlike the lady Dior and Chanel bags which I find extremely uncomfortable and impractical for the average woman). Also, for everyday use, most women don’t buy the Neverfull GM or the speedy35, so the flopping open and shape loss isn’t applicable. Buy the MM or the speedy 25/30, they’re fabulous everyday bags, and you can get organisers and base shapers for both to help them maintain their shape and keep them organised. I don’t care if everyone seems to have these bags, it’s the woman who makes the bag, not the other way around. Besides, there’s something oddly hostile about feeling like you don’t want anything in common with other women because it’s too “common”. If I like the bag, why do I care if everyone else has it or not? I agree on the Hermes thing, I don’t like the Birkin or the Kelly enough to play those pointless games and spend that kind of money. Nah.

What is really crazy about all this Hermès game to get a Kelly or a Birkin is that a client is ready to buy one that is " proposed" to her ( even though it is not a color, a size or type of leather she dreamt about ) so as not to offend her SA and to lose a new chance to buy another one in the future . Could you compare your vintage and new Chanel collection in terms of the size of stitching , hardware/ double C form and size , leather/ thickness etc. ? Enjoyed as usual .

I know what you mean Joanna, it's a difficult line to walk. As you say, if you decline a bag because you don't love the size/colour etc, it's not always possible to get another choice.
Absolutely I can do a video on vintage quality! Leave this with me xxx

    • @Ripleychan

This is so unfortunate. I personally believe the buying history game came from people who couldn't get a bag and tried to rationalise it.
People who go on about the buying game are pretty invested in getting their dream bag, and they think they need to show they're "good" enough to be offered one.
Unfortunately, and that sounds mean, but desperation smells. A sales person will prey on the customers 'intimidated' by the brand but ready to shell out 10k for a bag. Of course an SA is going to try and make some commission by upselling other items!
If people were more firm in stating what they really want and popped once in a while to browse without being bothered by the pretentiousness, just be more laid back about it, they would have the allure that the brand looks for in their customers

Oooh, Hermes is a brand I just fell in love with when I held one of their bags first time. The feel of the leather, the fact these are all hand made by Hermes artisans, it really was an inspiring feeling, now I have a few, also in exotic leather, but one is a very old lady, my crocodiles are from 1946 and one from ca 79/80 🥰 but there’s a lot of beautiful bags, there just can’t be too much 🥰🥰

I really love your videos and they're so fresh and I love your opinion, it's never swayed by an advert or that you're being paid to say 'oh isn't this fabulous'. Only correction is the Diorama and the Diorever were designed under Raf Simons not Maria Grazia Chiuri. The Saddle Bag was first introduced by John Galliano in 2000, faded away in around 2004 when they introduced things like the detective bag (which personally I loved) then they did bags like the Gaucho which was a super soft interpretation of a saddle style bag, again faded away, they also did some really questionable bags in 2008, but in 2004/05 they started to drift away from the Oblique pattern because the then CEO Sidney wanted to make the brand premium and use more exotic skins and got rid of things like t-shirts. You can see that shift in their collections back in 2005.
You should totally read the book 'Bringing Home the Birkin' it's about a guy (a true story) who goes around the world buying brand new Birkin's from boutiques all over the world and selling them on for a profit until Hermes caught wind and blocked him from buying anything else. They black listed him.
I find the Bottega really interesting because MaxMara do a bag VERY similar, that was out way before theirs was and before Daniel Lee joined BV if I remember correctly.
