Spot on, Sophie! For me, investment in a handbag ( or other item) means investment in one’s happiness, self-confidence and the pure pleasure of wearing an item that brings joy and delight over the years...yes, YEARS! Enjoy your hard-earned investment pieces over the years and they will pay off in ways that are not financial. Have a good Wednesday, Sophie! 💕🌷
You always also have to invest in yourself. Money is nice to have but what good does it do for you if you are depressed? Go on a holiday once in a while, buy that piece of clothing or bag and yes it's also ok to spend some money on make-up just because it makes you feel good. Same is true for stuff like gym memberships or skin treatments. You have to be comfortable in your own body.
I’m a full time womenswear reseller. When I take on a new consignment client & provide an estimated quote of what their items should sell for, they are usually *shocked* by how much lower the resale value is than what they paid. Just like cars, fashion items depreciate in value the moment you drive away from the store. When you splurge on something, do it expecting to keep that item in your wardrobe long-term & actually wear it, not because you think it will hold its value on the resale market
Yeah I wish others would understand this because they think its good financial idea. It’s become so popular on buying and selling the poplar bags and it just devalues the bag over time. I’m glad I’m buying for long term and not buying trends.
I agree Kate! I notice this trend of buying and selling comes from a lot of people trying to keep up with the Joneses with things they can’t actually afford. So a way to “afford” them is to buy the trends, where them a bit for social media to show off, then resell so they can afford to buy the next trend bag with that money. Win win for them. Get to have the newest trend and get to look to their social media followers like they have so much luxury.
I’ve been collecting bags for 20 yrs. I sold 20+ bags over the course of year. I had so called “investment bags” like the Chanel jumbo, Hermes picotin, Evelyne , and garden party …taste change. We just don’t know what we will like 20 years from now…we could just be over it…just don’t buy too much like I did…buy to enjoy if you can afford it comfortably
I want a Lady Dior, I think it is a classic and hopefully I would wear it when I am well past 80. Of course that is only two years from now so guess it is a safe investment.
Personally when I buy a designer bag I decide to have just a few that reflect personal taste and not as items to be sold at some future date. I prefer the emotional investment in them and the fact that they feel well put together with my outfit.
For me, my luxury handbag is an investment.... in myself. It is a way I reward myself from my hardwork. I carefully pick a bag that I would wear and use for decades. I don't look at "trendy" bags. For example, I was able to see the multi pochette bag and palm springs mini bag at LV, but while trendy, I wanted a different bag and the best decision I made was waiting 6 months cheaking the store monthly to see if a made in france one arrived and I bought it. My mom has 1 LV bag from her 30s that she still wears and it is in amazing condition. My first luxury handbag has memories attached to it, and every time I look at it, it makes me happy.
Hey Sophie, this might be a weird question but could you make a video about how you take long term care of your items? How do you wash your designer clothes? Do you give your shoes away for repair? What about sun light exposure? Especially how to properly take care of very expensive clothing is often a reason for me not to buy them even though I really like something. Thank you for any suggestions in advance and stay healthy! Please excuse any spelling mistakes as english is not my first language.
I always try to buy classic bags. If it’s been around for 20 years I feel confident that it’s a classic. I don’t want something that will date quickly if I’m going to spend that much money. Years ago I bought a Chanel Medium Classic Flap in black. I love it as much today as I do the day I bought it. I know I will still be wearing it when I’m 80. 😊 Love all your tips Sophie!
I think it's better to build up a collection of classic looking bags before buying too many trendy bags. The issue with buying a classic for financial investment is that one can be afraid of using it in fear of damaging it or they don't sell it cos the price keeps going up😂😅
Yes! This is why I don’t want to buy a brand new bag anymore 🤣 every little scuff or mark will hurt more than a preloved bag with a few already there. Weird mentality but it helps me 😅
Sophie… Sophie… how is it possible that a Saddle bag isn’t a classic!? Also the oblique pattern isn’t a classic!? Oblique was created by Marc Bohan in 1967 Saddle Bag created by John Galliano in 1999.
Something is not classic because it has existed for long. A classic can withstand the test of time and not look dated. I looove the saddle and the oblique but I’m certain I’ll get tired of them rather soon. In my opinion, a simple and clean design is the key to ensure you will look at the same article for 20 years and not get bored. Both saddle and oblique are pretty heavy designs
I’m still using my Armani shirts, jeans, suits, and belts from 22 years ago. I believe I made a great investment. And yes they are in great condition; still fit. No stains, holes or loose threads.
Agreed! Investment doesn't necessarily mean stocks and bonds. It may mean an investment in yourself. That's how I view my Chanel jumbo, YSL College bag and my Givenchy Antigona......it's an investment in my future self. I will always carry these bags and feel good about it.
Hi Sophie, hope you're having a great day?! Love this video. I own a Mini Lady Dior and its my best ever purchase!! So glad I have one in my collection. xx
I’m so tempted by your coupon code at FF because it’s valid on two of the expensive items I’ve been wanting for months. I make a vow every Lent not to shop so I can’t buy them but it’s really testing my resolve. Thank you anyway for passing such a great coupon code along. Love your videos!
Me,a penniless theoretical physicist in a country where scientists are generally unemployed: Oh yes let's watch how to buy expensive bags 🤣 Sophie's content is so entertaining even when not intended for you, best luxury chanel for fashion lovers.
Thank you for this video. I noticed most of your bags are flap bags. For me, flaps get on the way and can easily deteriorate (wrinkle, crease) when you carry the bag often. So for me those styles are not an investment. I prefer zippered bags. Your sweater reminds me of all the crochet projects I want to finish, but work gets on the way LOL
Happy Wednesday Sophie! I say life is short so buy & wear what you love. I have my bags on a display shelf where I can enjoy them every day even if I'm not wearing them. I try not to buy impulsivly but rather buy the ones that I think about at night before I fall asleep. Sending love from the US. ❤️
I don't think bags are investments. I do think for sustainability reasons, buying a classic bag or in just a style that you know you'll love for a long time makes more sense since you won't want to or need to keep buying replacements, but this idea we're sold that buying a designer bag is like buying a Certificate of Deposit or a Bond that you then can cash back out in a few years is ridiculous. If I went into a purchase with the belief that I will want to or should sell my bag in a few years, I know it would make me wear it less in order to protect that "investment" rather than enjoy what I've bought and get my full use out of it.
I LOVE watching your videos, Sophie! I am not so interested in designer bags but I simply love seeing you and listening to you. I always have a smile on my face when there’s a new video from you and it is always a positive start in the day for me. So thank you for that 💖
yes! I had to stop watching RUclips and stop following instagram accounts because I was buying into the hype of things or trend. investment to me means something I would've used 10 years ago, and see myself using 10 years in the future. I've curated my collection down a lot and I feel much happier with few bags. and, I actually prefer balenciaga for quality and style. I was a die hard lv addict for 4.5 years, and I was waiting for balenciaga to come out with Moto style again. so chic and edgy. I agree a lot of what lv is releasing isn't classic, few have the potential. BUT some people can pull off non classics and it suits them so well and it will be timeless for them im sure. im so happy you did this perspective of "investment bags"!
i agree with all you’ve highlighted in this video, i started my bag collection based on classic colours, black, tan, grey etc, now i but what i love and the emotional investment pays off hugely! x
So glad I came across your videos. I got into designer bags about two years ago when I first got the Alma. At that time I didn’t have a clue about investment bags or classics. But have made many purchases since and thanks to your videos have found pieces that will last me forever! I always go for classic pieces now and never opt for any trend bags
This is so true sophie the first LV bag i bought (straight off the LV boutique)was the speedy B D.amier Azure i still love it until now… I did not regret it at all..I will never sell it because thats the first one i bought in the boutique and i was nervous with choosing between Neverfull, speedy 25 and the speedy 25 bandoulier…
I would think easy maintenance on the bags is an optional point. Some are easy to maintain than others in terms of materials used. This is important for people who don't do much maintenance on bags and yet it is able to last longer.
I feel like the Bobby bag is a classic in terms of style. I had bought a similar bag from Target years prior to Dior's release that is a similar shape. While I did get tired of it, I gave it to my mom and she still enjoys it. The simplicity of it reads timeless
I decided to buy, what I would wear today.. because I bought Chanel jumbo and medium bags 4 years back thinking that it is an investment and I literally wore it 4/5 times.. Recently I bought LV Bella, I don’t think it is classic, but I just like it. I am sure it would not look bad after 5 years, even if it gets discontinued because of its color and shape.. it is neither trendy nor classic..
I'm a day late to the party on this one, Sophie, but I see you have made another jumper. I love the lavender color. Congrats on learning to knit; I have tried and never have caught on how to do it properly.
Great video Sophie. 😊 People use the phrase ‘investing in your wardrobe’, and it doesn’t necessarily mean buying things for the purpose of reselling at a later date. I think it’s more about buying those timeless classic pieces that you will use for years to come. I suppose you could think of it as a financial investment in the sense you’re not going to be forever replacing things for the next hot item. I’m quite a discerning buyer and am interested in the slow fashion movement. You could say I’m quite fussy in the sense I know my style and know what I like. If I want to try out a trend I would go for a cheaper brand personally.
The only good investment bag is one that is used. Mayyyybe you can hope to get some $$$ out of it if you tire of it, but at the end of the day, invest money in stocks, bonds, etc... not handbags. Buy a lovely bag because you saved for it, love it and it will bring you joy.
In my opinion it is so important to buy a bag that makes your heart sing. Knowing you can resell and get your money back is a nice to have but what good is that if you are purchasing for that reason only. My favourite brand is old Celine…luckily I’ve been able to purchase many at good preloved prices…old Celine makes my heart sing!☺️
I think it is helpful to know which classic bags have a low resale (Lady Dior) because those are the bags to buy preloved and then you can still get a decent return and you can see how the bag wears under good conditions. Bags with higher resale I prefer to purchase new to enjoy the boutique experience. I prefer to not think of my bags as investments though. Maybe an investment in my wardrobe but not financially.
Hi Sophie. Do you believe it’s better to buy a preloved designer bag in good condition instead of a new, lower end bag at the same price point because the designer bag is likely to have a higher resale value?
Hi Sophie, I’m new to luxury bags. Are you able to do a video on your favorite contemporary or designer bags like from the brand Coach? I’m on a budget as a new mom but am so inspired by luxury bags.
Dear Anise, that’s such a good idea! Yes I can do this. Personally I love Coach, Kate Spade, Off-White, Aspinal and also preloved (you can get some great deals on Prada etc). I hope this helps but keep an eye out for the vid! Hugs xx
I think a lot has to be said for personal style as well. As much a Chanel Classic flap or a Kelly/Birkin will always be seen as a classic and an ‘investment’, they aren’t to everyone’s aesthetics. Those brands and styles are and will always be out of my reach financially, but aside from the Boy bag, neither brand align to my personal style. I prefer the more edgy bags that I adored growing up like the Balenciaga City, Mulberry Alexa, Proenza Schouler PS11 and basically anything Valentino or Alexander McQueen. All brands and styles that don’t hold their ‘value’ in the traditional sense, but to me hold greater Value in their appearance and nostalgic sentiment and thusly get worn and used more often. Since I started looking solely at bags that were my style over those that were deemed trendy, I’ve really tailored my collection to include only styles that I adore and bring me joy. Truly an investment in myself and my style more than anything x
Sophie thank you so much for making videos like this. I’m sure I’m not the only one you have helped on making decisions on getting “that” handbag. Investment on handbags for me is like investing in a relationship. 1- I must want/love that handbag. 2- I should be able to trust that handbag that it will stay with me longterm or lifetime. Meaning the quality and regardless of the upcoming trends, I will still be able to use it. 3- The cost of it shouldn’t matter to me wether I will gain more or less money from it later on. For as long as #2 applies.
Since you like Coach, I’d really love to see you try out Dooney and Bourke. Check out their Florentine leather line, and their Alto leather line. They are made so so well, and beautiful shapes and styles. They just aren’t talked about enough. I’d love love love to see you try at least one.
Handbags and jewelry are great investment pieces. Also silver pieces (silver shot or bars) are usually cheap maybe $3 on EBay and will always have value!
I would add to think of your past self--what bags have you had that you just loved? Mine is still a bucket bag that is meant to be used for gardening--as a college student I couldn't afford nicer things so that cotton gardening bag was my pretend LV Noe bag (I now have the real one). Sophie, when you said to think of your future self it reminded me to look back at the bags I have just loved. The colors and materials are different but that shapes I have always been drawn to are the same. Looking forward, I will only need to physically go to work once a week once CoVid calms down a little more. This dramatically changes the shape of bags I'll be needing. Great video!
I think the Bobby is a classic bag not in terms of "iconic" but in terms of cost per wear. It's a bag that is very timeless in terms of shape and style. It would not have looked out of place in the early 1900s and will not look dated in the next 100 years. It's a very practical, weekend/leisure kind of bag.
I just recently got the green bottega chain pouch in Kelly green was dying for it now I’m not so sure I think it may be to trendy and the color so I am considering selling now getting a new lv backpack love backpacks
Hello Sophie, in my opinion we should buy whatever make us happy, as long as we can afford it. I am into YSL bags mostly in black, beige and tan. As for colour transfer, i only wear light coloured bags with similar coloured clothes. In my country we are not in the habit of buying preloved, don't know why, but nobody does, and there are no shops with preloved items either.
I also think investment means how well the bag holds up, I bought a bag from Target and the seam to the zipper started ripping apart and only after a month. I bought a Coach bag and the zipper is STILL assembled the way it was the day i purchased it. Plus I love the way they boxed and bagged it.
I buy luxury bags because I like to collect them. However, I only buy the bags that I know I will use right now and in the future. There are some trend bags that I think they are cute, but I don't see myself wearing them in a few years because I get older or they are not trendy anymore. I never bought a trendy bag because I know if I don't like the bag in the future, it will be hard to resale and losing so much money as well. I wouldn't personally buy the bags as an "investment" because I would like to wear the bags, and not having them sit in my closet for 10+ years, then re-sale them. Such as the Chanel classic flap, it's not my style, so I didn't buy it. Instead, I bought the boy, which fits my lifestyle much more. Even with that, I rarely use it, because I don't want to carry an expensive bag everywhere I go. For me, it's nice to buy 1 or 2 "investment" bags, as long as I like the style and able to use them. However, it's more important to me that I am spending this amount of money and able to enjoy using the bags as well! By the way, I love watching your videos!!
Yess I agree with everything!!! Sophie you are one of my fav youtubers! I love your content and thoughts on luxury. Also your comment on the Antigona, I absolutely love my black patent leather mini!! It's an absolute work horse, I've had it for 5+ years and it honestly still looks brand new (with ALOT of usage during winter 😅)
I feel like Dior saddle bag might stick around long term and be an iconic piece. It’s so distinctive in a crowded market, you see one and know exactly what it is. Depends on how well Dior mitigates over-saturation, but I think if they do manage, it’ll be something that it’s popularity will ebb and flow but it won’t disappear like it did before.
I feel like it will cycle, would like to see some come out that are a little less structured and stiff. I seem to remember a green one that was in a softer fabric years and years ago, something like that 😊
I’m going to buy a new bag tomorrow and I’m completely torn between the Dior Saddle bag and the Bottega Veneta chain pouch. I have no friends so I have no one to ask advice to. Any advice for me? I know they’re both “trendy” or whatever. 😔 but I just love both of them and I have no idea what I’m gonna do.
I vote saddle. Let us know what you decide. Don’t get my wrong I love BV I have 3 oversized pouches. But I don’t like it with the chain. I guess you could wear it as a clutch and on the shoulder so I see your dilemma. But still that chain ruins it for me. Looks like a chain you get at Home Depot lol.
Get what you love the most I would personally go for Dior because if your paying that much you should see what I’m wearing.. Bottega isn’t my style to trendy for the money they want.
I know black is the most sensible colour for wear and tear, but I just don’t think it works in the warmer months. Especially as I tend to wear light coloured dresses all summer. I’ve been trying to decide what colour I would get the lady dior in if I were to save for it…
Always go with the bag that makes your heart sing! If you really love it you are going to use it and not think about selling it! I recently saw a rise on Chanel prices preloved, like a Jumbo for 13500€… I’m going to check the items that sold prices as you mentioned.
Sophie is around my age, so when you talk about coach it reminds me of HS because a lot of the girls wore the coach bag and wristlets in my HS. It was also something I wore until my early 20s, their footwear was REALLY comfortable. Lol
I wasn’t sure if coach was still considered a luxury brand anymore. I do have several coach bags. I have been saving for a higher end luxury bag. I am considering a Celine bag. I thought about a Lv . After watching videos , I think a Celine luggage might be better. Possibly a mulberry. What’s your opinion on Celine vs Mulberry?
Hi Sophie - I completely agree that a optimal purchase consists of what you love, however when spending that much it is comforting to think that there may be some return on investiment. I am considering purchasing the small black leather Gucci Jackie 1961 - I love it and if seems to me that it will be classic enough to wear for years and years. Am I blinded by love? Would appreciate your thoughts. Thanks!
I personally don’t view my bags as an investment, but I tend to buy classic styles and shapes when it comes to luxury bags and spend much less on trends. I do think that something like the Prada Reissue has a good price point and you are likely to get your money’s worth while it’s still in style. I have a friend that still has and uses her Prada bags from the early 2000’s, and they have held up very well.
Investment bags for me are either things I can easily sell (hopefully for profit/to break even, or at least to get cost per wear low) or things I will love and use for years. Coach has been a great investment brand for me in terms of cost per wear and I love their quality for price, I haven't wanted to sell a single thing I bought from them. Kate Spade has not been an investment brand for me at all in any way and I will not touch it except for small accessories, it's cute but a waste of money (I had to sell things for half price after 0-3 wears). I prefer to keep and use things for years, though flipping things is fun. As luxury prices continue to grow astronomically and their quality to decline, Coach will probably continue to be my sweet spot
Thanks 🙏🏿 for this video because I purchased a Lady ABC Dior because she is extremely well made! A beautiful bag, I purchased her over the Chanel Coco handle. The handles are beautiful and the shape is a forever classic. I even love the strap with the charms. I don’t understand why the resale value is lower but it doesn’t matter because I have excellent taste and I know quality when I see it and that handbag is just beautiful!
Disagree on the Prada, those are classic hobo nylon bags. The hobo is a classic shape. Nylon is lightweight, simply maintained. They brought it back because you cannot argue with this bag. I don't have it but I have a Gucci Tom Ford era black box leather hobo and it's totally classic. It's just not as popular. but you can have too much black!! Black outfit, black bag? NOOOooooo. So at some point you need to decide if the hero of the outfit is colour and if the bag is going to sing or it's going to be a support. You need both in your wardrobe. IMO.
Bag investments to me is to buy something that can last you a long time, I.e. can be lady dior which I know I can still wear it when I am in my 60s, or a good quality coach which I can get the most use out from it.. bag prices mostly depreciates unless we are talking about Chanel or Hermes but even those doesn't really mean you can sell it at a higher price down the road.. if you want to do luxury investments, buy Rolex or just buy lvmh stocks. U will definitely make more money from it. So just buy bags that you really like. Life is short, love yourself..
I truly believe that an investment bag is a piece you are going to wear a lot! Trend or no trend! If you see it as something that you could easily grab do it! Also I dont agree with the black thing… if you check the preloved market and resale sites in general color bags have waaay better prices and are so difficult to get! While with black (specially Chanel) there are always several options!
hi Sophie i have bought 2 dior bobby bag (medium and large) before i saw your video. but what is your opinion of the LV pochette metis bags? i have bought both the classic and the reverse monogram but now contemplating of getting the empreinte ones. what is your opinion of these models?
I just bought a Celine Luggage Nano that I’ve been wanting for years at a great price 😊 it might not be a classic to some but I think if I’ve wanted it for 6 years I think I’ll want it for another 15 😂

I always tell people do not think of bags as investments. Instead, build a wardrobe around your style and get bags that fit your style.
Coach is very respectable to me. Same with Longchamp.

That sounds so cute!

So thank you for that 💖
I still love the saddle bag!
I really like the saddle bag from Dior
Another great knit Sophie. You are really talented! Did you use a specific pattern?
Agreeing with all other commenters on how helpful and accurate this video is, and also YOUR JUMPER is DIY??? It's stunning!!
i agree with all you’ve highlighted in this video, i started my bag collection based on classic colours, black, tan, grey etc, now i but what i love and the emotional investment pays off hugely!
I love this video! I’m looking into possibly getting a Dior bag for my first bag. Sophie could you please do an updated video on your Dior collection?
Hi Sophie, what are your thoughts on the ysl loulou bags?
Thank you! For me, bags are "investments" if I get a lot of wear out of them!
I know you mentioned coach, but Would love to see you talk more about mid range up and coming brands like Polene, pinko, etc
I would think easy maintenance on the bags is an optional point. Some are easy to maintain than others in terms of materials used. This is important for people who don't do much maintenance on bags and yet it is able to last longer.
Love your jumper! Please kindly share where I can find the pattern. I’d love to knit one! Thank you!
People use the phrase ‘investing in your wardrobe’, and it doesn’t necessarily mean buying things for the purpose of reselling at a later date.
Hi Sophie, just got a medium burberry lola and was curious about your opinion, do you think it will become a classic in the future?
The only good investment bag is one that is used. Mayyyybe you can hope to get some $$$ out of it if you tire of it, but at the end of the day, invest money in stocks, bonds, etc... not handbags. Buy a lovely bag because you saved for it, love it and it will bring you joy.
I absolutely love Coach, I have so many it’s not funny. 💞💞
Me too Heather!xx
Hi Sophie, love your channel all the way from the Philippines! What can you say about Furla? I think the quality is pretty good.
Great video, Sophie. Informative and useful as always x
Sophie you really suit that colour 💐
Ahh thank you Michelle! I saw the wool and I loved the shade so much, had to make something out of it! Hugs xx
Coach is an excellent brand. I tend to favor their unique but classic bags like their Swagger and Rogue. Great video and suggestions Sophie 😊
Great content! I know black bags have a huge following but I've really grown to appreciate a really a nice cognac, caramel or taupe color.
I seem to remember a green one that was in a softer fabric years and years ago, something like that 😊
I love your jumper.
I still really adore my Givenchy antigona xx!
@@lolipena8051 I never thought of it like that! Thanks so much for your input! ❤️❤️❤️
Get what you love the most I would personally go for Dior because if your paying that much you should see what I’m wearing.. Bottega isn’t my style to trendy for the money they want.
Off topic-that lilac color looks so beautiful on you!
What about a camera bag do you think this is a classic shape bag?
Hi Sophie, love you and your tips
Hello lovely Kaylhee and thank you so much for watching!xx
I know black is the most sensible colour for wear and tear, but I just don’t think it works in the warmer months. Especially as I tend to wear light coloured dresses all summer. I’ve been trying to decide what colour I would get the lady dior in if I were to save for it…
Another great topic. Thanks for sharing.
please turn on closed captioning/subtitle because sometimes I dont understand your accent and it would greatly benefit disabled/deaf audience
Awesome video thank you for all you do 🌺
Always go with the bag that makes your heart sing! If you really love it you are going to use it and not think about selling it!
I recently saw a rise on Chanel prices preloved, like a Jumbo for 13500€… I’m going to check the items that sold prices as you mentioned.
But the saddle bag has been around for almost 20 years. it is a soon to be classic.
Thanks!
I have a coach field bucket bag for 50% off
Sophie, can you PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE let us know where you got the knitting pattern for your sweater? It's gorgeous, you did such a great job!!!
I didn't realise how much I needed this content. Thanks Sophie love your take as always
What do you think about the Dior Caro bag? Is it a trend bag? I love it but don’t want to buy if it will be out in the next few years
Investment bags for me are either things I can easily sell (hopefully for profit/to break even, or at least to get cost per wear low) or things I will love and use for years.
Lavender is your color Sophie!
Totally agree that the preloved market is a buyers market at the moment. I have also noticed Hermes B/K are dropping as well!
What is your opinion on the longchamp st tropez basket bag for the summer??
Great video, Sophie! I love your jumper. It would be lovely if you could please share where you purchased the pattern. You’re an excellent knitter!
IMO.
You should only buy a bag that you love not for trends or resale value. You can never go wrong.
Saddle bag has gone up in price, though, and that's for used.
