It was very rewarding to help them over some of the hurdles and see them succeed. There is so much more information available now if you are interested in succeeding but it’s also still a very tough environment.
I much prefer Dior, the experience is so different to that of Chanel. Dior boutiques are gorgeous, the experience screams luxury, and their bags are so much more chic imo. Chanel puts out the same things over and over again and the quality of their bags and constant price increases are insane. I don’t purchase my bags with the intention to sell, so resale value isn’t top of mind to me.
Definitely. But I do think, one should always buy what the heart prefers instead of just looking at bags as investment. I’d rather invest in stocks or experience than try to see bags as investment. One should buy bags to enjoy them and I personally dislike the idea of owning only high-value bags for that reason instead of just buying pieces out of pure enjoyment.
I will never understand people buy bag with the thought of re sale value. If you love the bag, why would you want to sell it? So re sale value shouldn’t be something to worry about.

I started working full time in 1981 so I was out of school, really glad to see the back of that, and on the loose in the world for the first time and I had an absolute ball. The world was a very different place back then, a lot more secure. You could always be sure of getting a job because there were more jobs than people and you could walk in and out of them whenever you chose. I bought my first car and traveled a lot. It was a really fun time to be young. I loved the fashions too. Of course some were over the top and too out there for me, but I loved the pastel coloured suits, floral dresses and silk blouses. I was a teenager in the 70s which was a truely ugly era. Younger people now who say they love the 70s fashions would think very differently if they had had to live through them. Fashion as a matter of personal choice and finding your own style like people do today was completely unacceptable.back then. It was totally dictatorial. You wore what was in and if you didn’t you were labeled a dag and punished for it. Individuality was definitely not encouraged. I remember being addicted to classic movies and constantly complaining to my mother, why aren’t we allowed to wear pretty, feminine clothes anymore? Then along came Princess Diana and everything suddenly changed. People now have no idea how powerful her influence was. Pretty and feminine were back in and I really made the most of it. I became totally addicted to Laura Ashley floral dresses. They were very similar to the sort that Dolce And Gabana make now. Lilysilk make very 80s inspired blouses, they were everywhere back then. And money went so much further. I used to fill up the petrol tank in my first car for $5 and gold was worth around $100 an ounce, so most of my friends and family, and of course myself, travelled to South East Asia every year for what was a very cheap holiday and bought heaps of fine jewellery. I suppose you can tell I really loved living in the 80s.

I love some 70's light and flowy boho dresses, colours and florals. It has a romantic style, which is feminine. I suppose you are referring to clothes that were more hippie, out there and all over the place? Also a lot more jeans? I guess it also depends on where one lived, because styles were slightly different, unlike it is today with the internet everyone ends up being more or less the same. As for what everyone should wear and not have their own personality shown through style, I'd argue that it was like that throughout in every decade and century (I studied fashion history, this is why I'd say it's a fact). Even today, yes we can have more say about it, but overall it's still "dictated". What's interesting is that most people don't even want to find their own style 🤷🏼♀️

The huge bell bottom pants, polyester body shirts, clunky platform shoes and clogs, super mini skirts worn with knee high boots, shapeless smocks, and don’t even get me started on menswear. Watch and episode of Benny Hill or the beginning of No Sex Please We’re British on RUclips and you will get the picture. Everyone really looked that bizarre. I was so over jeans after the 70s that it’s taken until now for me to want to wear them again. I used to watch classic movies on tv and long to be allowed to wear pretty clothes but pretty was not tolerated. That would get you a beating at recess at school. Home decor was a whole education in hideousness that people wouldn’t believe now unless you had been there. It was an era that I didn’t enjoy one bit and the 80s couldn’t come soon enough.
I just love Dior - the quality, the service, the models, the style. I umderstand why Chanel might be better because the re-sell value is better, but Dior to me just screams classy, meanwhile I feel like now everybody and their mother have a Chanel or a knock-off Chanel.
Chanel is declining in quality and it doesn’t justify the price increases anymore, imo. I’d rather buy a bag that will spark me joy for years or even decades to come than to only care for the resell value.
I agree, resale value aside. Dior is my preference. Luxury is a full experience for many people and I always have a wonderful experience at Dior. I like what Chanel used to be and honestly, I would really be interested in what Coco Chanel herself would think of the direction the brand has gone in.
Dior sales reps are really nice and not judgemental at all. In Chanel they are better than LV in terms of service but I think they kind of judge people when they walk in the door based on how they look. Dior don’t seem to do that and they’ve let me try on bags and talk to me without pressuring. That’s just my experience but if you are saving, save for the one you really like personally!
Dior is not good with service. They basically asked me to throw my Patent Dior lady away when the handles left a mark on the patent side after a few months of storage. Was shocking as I had bought it from the very boutique I brought the bag to. Meanwhile , Chanel has repaired my accessories and replaced the hardware of some of the old 255s countless times. Damage to Chanel items was more due to rough handling ( young kids etc ) and yet, I get no questions asked when I take them back again and again. I would think the Dior issue was a manufacturer quality issue but Dior told me to throw the bag away instead 😵

I have displayed my Medium & Jumbo Chanel bags on a shelf in my bedroom. Every day, I get a real joy from looking at them! 😍 My justification? I was waiting for a Chanel mini but it's so hard to find and I lost my patience waiting for it and seeing the prices keep going up. So glad I got my lady Dior! No games or BS and it's gorgeous. You brought up some brilliant points that personally really hit home, Sophie. Love that you’re genuinely encouraging people to wait, really think about their purchase habits, and giving everyone an incredible history lesson in the process! I also don’t think that self-preserving voice in my head (when it comes to saving for a rainy day) will ever really go away b/c of how I was brought up. The ‘investment and longevity aspect’ of buying bags will inevitably influence my purchases b/c of that. Also, I do love that the 2.55 reissue in particular reads to me as understated luxury. As someone who gravitates towards utilitarian bags like Celine’s classic, Fendi’s peekaboo, and Loewe’s puzzle... I think either the 2.55 or Classic Flap feels like my jam. Adore the utilitarian compartments too!

I recently popped into Chanel and Dior on Sloane street back when we were between lockdowns with a friend who was interested in a Chanel bag. I hadn’t really been in Chanel before, but frankly half the bags looks like they have been fakes. The quality is not that great. When we went into Dior though, we marvelled at the craftsmanship of the bags.
I really agree about Chanel. I tried the Classic flap. I thought it would be a gorgeous quality piece. The leather, the quilt, ... it just looked basic. No wow factor. I also thought that you would feel special wearing such an iconic and pricey piece. Nope. Didn't happen. Definitely overrated^^ unfortunately it has become somehow tacky as "everyone" has it, including reality TV stars... On the other hand, I have a Chloe mini Marcie and every time I reach for it, I am like "this is such a beautiful piece". I love touching it because you can feel this is a quality piece.

Good video, my wife has a bag collection and just got her first chanel, the trendy CC. I am looking at surprising her with a lady dior, but it's an LE off white, cloth with flowers.... you got me to rethink for a conservative color and leather... I have a WOC, mini, medium double classic flap, and large classic flap all in black. Love them all, but I find I only pickup the Chanel Boy. I look at photos of myself with the large and I think it over powers me. I only own Dior earrings, and sneakers - no Dior bag. If I do, I will get preowned.

I love the Bulgari Serpenti and the Valentino rockstud bag lines esp in fun colors (light blue, pink). Popular but not too much that ppl assume it's a fake anyway.
It is so important to buy what you personally love and will wear. I got taken up by FOMO on the black classic medium bought it and did not like it one bit. Sold it without wearing it even once. I love the beige Clair medium even in lambskin and should have bought that from the start instead of going with the “safer” option. Lady Dior in the d-lite looks beautiful and casual. Why choose buy both 😀

Very good video. I would like to add one thing about color. While black is a safe bet the resale value of Chanel classic flaps in either beige clair or red is also there and you will be able to make almost the amount or even more when selling. (Just go with a color that is considered classic to the specific design house, is what I am trying to say.)

Yes I have done some impulse shopping so many times I am 41 years old and addicted to handbags and I have made so many mistakes over the years going off of trends and not what works for me and my body and my lifestyle! I have owned a small classic flap and sold it in the past I just don’t like Chanel‘s quality for the price my favorite is Louis Vuitton and Dior ! I stick with classic bags from Louis Vuitton like the Alma BB /pochette Matisse/and recently purchased my first Dior saddle bag! It was supposed to be here by Christmas but I’m still waiting for my package to arrive they got held up I have the same Alma BB that you have watching your video on it is why I bought it! I think it is a great bag for the money it is also stylish and timeless I recommend it for everybody’s first luxury handbag purchase Fr LV❤️ and on another note Louis Vuitton always goes through different creative directors and I cannot wait until they get a new one it’s so exciting to see the new visions that they have for the bags I am not pleased with these puffer type bags though! Damage to Chanel items was more due to rough handling ( young kids etc ) and yet, I get no questions asked when I take them back again and again. I would think the Dior issue was a manufacturer quality issue but Dior told me to throw the bag away instead 😵
@@kawaiikitty4569 I agree. Dior has the best customer service! We don't have Chanel boutique in my area and I only was dealing with them by phone and it was not a pleasant experience. They were borderline rude, not helpful at all.
I have displayed my Medium & Jumbo Chanel bags on a shelf in my bedroom. Every day, I get a real joy from looking at them! 😍 My justification? Well, If I framed the cash or simply displayed the cash that I used to buy these bags, would I enjoy looking at the cash as much?! No! 😃😂😅 Ding! They're worth it.

I haven't seen any other handbag videos even approaching the topics of economics or personal financial status.

The history of chanel is just what turns me off I know ALOT of brands don't have a great history but I want to avoid chanel as much as possible

Great points of view! I was debating this for a while and ended up getting a lady Dior (the myabcdior one). I was waiting for a Chanel mini but it's so hard to find and I lost my patience waiting for it and seeing the prices keep going up. So glad I got my lady Dior! No games or BS and it's gorgeous. I love mine!

You brought up some brilliant points that personally really hit home, Sophie. Love that you’re genuinely encouraging people to wait, really think about their purchase habits, and giving everyone an incredible history lesson in the process!
I also don’t think that self-preserving voice in my head (when it comes to saving for a rainy day) will ever really go away b/c of how I was brought up. The ‘investment and longevity aspect’ of buying bags will inevitably influence my purchases b/c of that. Also, I do love that the 2.55 reissue in particular reads to me as understated luxury. As someone who gravitates towards utilitarian bags like Celine’s classic, Fendi’s peekaboo, and Loewe’s puzzle... I think either the 2.55 or Classic Flap feels like my jam. Adore the utilitarian compartments too!

Amazing video but such a hard choice! I’m blessed to have a Jumbo Classic Flap and a Mini and ABC Lady Dior! Bought all of them preloved and I couldn’t be happier!
I recently popped into Chanel and Dior on Sloane street back when we were between lockdowns with a friend who was interested in a Chanel bag. I hadn’t really been in Chanel before, but frankly half the bags looks like they have been fakes. The quality is not that great. When we went into Dior though, we marvelled at the craftsmanship of the bags.
I really agree about Chanel. I tried the Classic flap. I thought it would be a gorgeous quality piece. The leather, the quilt, ... it just looked basic. No wow factor. I also thought that you would feel special wearing such an iconic and pricey piece. Nope. Didn't happen. Definitely overrated^^ unfortunately it has become somehow tacky as "everyone" has it, including reality TV stars...
On the other hand, I have a Chloe mini Marcie and every time I reach for it, I am like "this is such a beautiful piece". I love touching it because you can feel this is a quality piece.
Maybe this is not new information to you but on the Christian Dior YT channel you can watch how they make the bags !
30 years ago Chanel bags were beautiful quality but now they are made in Italy by Chinese immigrants and a bag costs 35 euros to produce!.

I was told by my Dior sales manager that the carnage pattern was inspired by the cane chairs of Christian Dior's grandmother where he spent his summer holidays when he was at a young age.
I would say the coco handle also will stick around for a very long time.
I have a WOC, mini, medium double classic flap, and large classic flap all in black. Love them all, but I find I only pickup the Chanel Boy. I look at photos of myself with the large and I think it over powers me. I only own Dior earrings, and sneakers - no Dior bag. If I do, I will get preowned.
I have the Dior saddle bag and strap,. I was very hesitant to buy, trendy but I love it .

I love the Bulgari Serpenti and the Valentino rockstud bag lines esp in fun colors (light blue, pink). Popular but not too much that ppl assume it's a fake anyway.

The trinity are legendary for their resale value but I question the real quality of Chanel apart from the heritage and prestige of the brand.

It is so important to buy what you personally love and will wear. I got taken up by FOMO on the black classic medium bought it and did not like it one bit. Sold it without wearing it even once. I love the beige Clair medium even in lambskin and should have bought that from the start instead of going with the “safer” option. Lady Dior in the d-lite looks beautiful and casual. Why choose buy both 😀

If I were buying one of those bags, I would actually buy the 2.55 vintage with actual golden hardware.
Very good video. I would like to add one thing about color. While black is a safe bet the resale value of Chanel classic flaps in either beige clair or red is also there and you will be able to make almost the amount or even more when selling. (Just go with a color that is considered classic to the specific design house, is what I am trying to say.)

I've always loved the Chanel Classic Flap and Mini Lady Dior, but I never used either of the bags and I'm also looking at the financial side of things. Interesting re. around 4.32 and the history of the burgundy lining - I love the history and backstories to the Chanel products and so many aspects - the Camelias, colour, names of the products relate to Chanel's life.

I eventually would love to buy a Chanel classic flap bag. I hope I can keep up with the price increases however. I'm limiting myself to 1 designer bag a year and I just purchased my lady Dior! I went into Dior just wanting to look and ended up buying a black my lady dior with a mitzah. My SA was so sweet and gave me lots of information about the brand and bag that it made me fall in love and finally pull the trigger on buying one. I love it!
Yes I have done some impulse shopping so many times I am 41 years old and addicted to handbags and I have made so many mistakes over the years going off of trends and not what works for me and my body and my lifestyle! I have owned a small classic flap and sold it in the past I just don’t like Chanel‘s quality for the price my favorite is Louis Vuitton and Dior ! I stick with classic bags from Louis Vuitton like the Alma BB /pochette Matisse/and recently purchased my first Dior saddle bag! It was supposed to be here by Christmas but I’m still waiting for my package to arrive they got held up I have the same Alma BB that you have watching your video on it is why I bought it! I think it is a great bag for the money it is also stylish and timeless I recommend it for everybody’s first luxury handbag purchase Fr LV❤️ and on another note Louis Vuitton always goes through different creative directors and I cannot wait until they get a new one it’s so exciting to see the new visions that they have for the bags I am not pleased with these puffer type bags though!
