  • In this video I show you how to remove and install the black plastic windshield cowl panel on my 1998 Porsche Boxster 986. It's the same procedure for the Cayman, 996, and 997.

While most videos on this subject indicate that it applies to the 987, I can tell you that there are a few differences. In my 987.1 Cayman S, the electrical connectors are cylindrical and upright on the two support arms and the connector clip style is a bit different. The support arms are also attached with simple push-pin tabs and not a T20 screw. These are plastic and I guarantee they will break upon removal (especially if this is the first replacement). You may want to have a few kicking around your shop to complete the job. There is also a wire running over the cabin filter area that connects to a metal plate attached to the underside of the cowl. This component needs to be swapped to the new cowl and the wire re-attached. Some videos also indicate that the rubber seal that meets the glass is a separate part and needs to be attached to the new cowl. This was not the case for my replacement, as it was shipped complete with the seal attached, as well as the washer hoses and nozzles (save for the 2 end caps). These are simple differences and easily sorted if you're not ham-fisted, but to the novice it may be a PITA. I did the job in a couple of hours, taking the time to clean the exposed area of all accumulated debris. Also, take your time researching this cowl, as the prices can vary greatly due to shipping costs.

It's the little things that make your videos great and helpful, like the bonus pan shot of what's under the cowl. Never know when that could help someone put stuff back together again. Thanks Aaron.
Video quality and narration are top notch as always!

Great worthwhile job to do. I have a 2005 Boxster. Many of your videos can be directly applied to the 987. Keep them coming, we’ll get through the whole book. 👍

Did you ever shine it up? I'm going to try OWatrol Polytrol Color Restorer, what did you use and did you have any success in restoring the original black color?

+Scott Niggemann I did, I used a heat gun! I made a video. It’s on the channel. Search it for restoring black plastic.
