How to OPEN SEALED HEADLIGHTS - Porsche 986/987/996

- This video shows you how to separate the sealed headlights using my 1998 Porsche Boxster 986 as an example. I use the "hot box" or heat gun in a box method but some people just put them right in their home oven.

Great content Aaron, though I cringed the whole time afraid of something breaking. Can't wait to see what you do with these next.
I had that same issue with wire insulation just disintegrating when I retrofit to LEDs in my 986. Tried electrical tape, but that was really messy. Ended up using some stuff called liquid electrical tape that you just paint on. Seems to have worked really well.
Thanks! I just ordered some and put a link in the description!
Lol I waited till she wasn’t home.
@@dutchk9833 😂 😂 😂
So, what I learned from this video is never try to do this.
+Michael Welschmidt that’s a fair assessment 😂 Most videos cut out all the hard parts and make this look much easier than it is!
Ditto!
No way.
I appreciate you posting these videos even when it doesn't go as planned. Kudos to you for your honesty.
+Jess H haha thanks! My videos are intended to be helpful, not to show that I’m great at what I’m doing. Because I’m obviously not 😂
Success tonight for me. Thanks for the guidance. 225F for 15 minutes in the kitchen oven. No major damage. Took 3 heat cycles.
+@tuul75 nice! 🍻
Did the oven method a few years ago- Amazingly, it wasn't particularly stinky, but YMMV. I didn't know about or bother removing the rubber seal. Oven didn't hurt it!
Worked like a charm, though!
+Brad Emery that’s great!
I think I winced through the whole lens removal process..😂😂 I definitely know what not to do! 😂😂 Happy it worked out!
+LB B-Ridge haha yeah it’s not fun!
I’m sweating hoping that nothing breaks but nice job 👍
+For fun Account 😂 thanks
Pelican parts sells new seals for the headlight perimeter for about $25.
+Richard Greenawald ahh... good to know, thanks!
I do all my maintenance on my 996, you’ve taught me don’t try this with the headlights 😧
+The amazing man 😆 that’s also valuable info!
My wiring was completely cracked like yours so I'm planning to do my own wiring but not so sure how to undo the pins...
+el garaje 911 I have another video going over terminal removal kits that might get you started.
Excellent. Been dreading this and opted for polishing. This is an option now. BTW your headlights were not bad at all to start with?
+Wandering Friar the outside wasn’t bad but the inside was starting to yellow. Better than a lot that I’ve seen for sure though! But it was the light output that really makes it worth it!
That cracked up wiring is a big mess. I tried rewiring, screwed it all up. BUT, this time I got a little bottle of LIQUID TAPE at Harbor freight, carefully separated wires from clip-thingies and painted them 3 times! FANTASTIC!!! I strongly suggest you NOT try to rewire the lights......(rewiring cost me 300$). Next, MAYBE, I'll take lens off and get burnt/brown stuff out.
( I am considering handling it like having a butt-ugly baby.....some things you just have to learn to like!)
+capnchip 😂 😂 🍻
It is easier to heat them up in an oven then pry open like you did
+Dutch Knine probably so, but the wife vetoed that 😝
WOW ! can you just tell me were I can purchase a replacement assembly at a far price ?
+Yvon Bourbonnais 😂 they never seem to be available at a reasonable price
Unfortunate... two days prior, I did a walkaround video of my 986 and gave a "heads up" on scratching the underside of the headlight paint. Atleast you were able to preserve the rubber surround. lol

+JeremyHartson2000 too late! 😂 It’s not going to be that noticeable I hope...
@@JeremyHartson2000 nice. Liked and subscribed 😉
Please let me know how to replace the rubber gasket. I cannot find just that part. They want you to buy a whole headlight assembly at $1000 each. I had to use some self-sticking D seal to replace mine that was completely deteriorated in the AZ heat.
+Jess H someone told me that pelican parts sells just the rubber gasket. Check out my next video on how to upgrade the headlights to see how to replace it.
what is the end result you're looking for??
+@teevee8944 you can see on my video with the retrofit kit ;)
So what was the correct way to do it?
+Michael Weimorts I showed how to do it. Only thing I would have done differently would be to heat it up more than I did
wow does this look NOT enjoyable
+@miamirice6840 it is not! But the results… 🤩
Yikes!
I have the old style interior headlamp that’s cracked from heat.
I guess that’s the only way to do it.
Yikes
+blairman Stevo201! Yeah it’s not pretty!
@@HelpMeDIY
Gonna look around for your upgrade show.
@@blairmanstevo2013 still in progress. Hopefully I’ll finish and post this weekend
The butcher of headlightsville.
+Offdutydad68 😆
Looks like a colossal pain in the ass. 25 year old porsches...
+GS Ten it is, but the final result is worth it!
Too much time
+Dio heavycheve you definitely have to be willing to put in work!
disaster...
Why would you bother?...made a right mess of the headlights. If you don’t like them, change them!
+Jeffrey Roberts uhh that’s what I’m doing 😂
Change the whole bloody thing.....cracks me up!😂😂😂
@@jeffreyroberts7438 The upgrade I'm doing requires the shell of the light, that's why ;)
