2JZ COMMODORE EP10- Masking Kevin's Past with Holden's Best Colour?

- The original aim for Kevo was to slap in a 2JZ and go racing but the engine bay on this 1994 VR Commodore was atrocious and something had to be done about it.
Sherbrooke green is a factory holden colour and actually the factory colour of the car and was the perfect choice for the engine bay, no doubt the rest of the car will eventually get painted but I've seen enough bog dust and clear coat this week so well attack that another weekend!

Regarding the back seat, you could do a fibreglass panel to hold helmets, and put sponsers logos on there too.

Hey Woody , Here's a Tip mate . When filling small holes like that get someone under the car and hold a bit of copper plate over the Holes . It will stop the blowouts and make it much neater and welds dont stick to the copper .
Yep, I used brass for the same trick in my engine bay.
could you make a magnetic casing for a piece of copper so you can do it solo?
Can also use a bit of Ali if you find copper hard to come by. It's not as nice and can stick a bit more than copper but still gets the job done.
Came to say the same thing, bit of aluminum flat bar will do the job also if you don't have copper
A large brass freeze/welsh plug works as well

And awesome effort for self-taught. When I put the body kit on the Soarer I did a rattle can job in the shed at home with poor lighting. It turned out terribly, especially the front bar. had to take it to a mate, we rubbed it back and he clear coated it properly.
The rest of the car isn't too bad, have learned to live with it. I had to keep reminding myself throughout the processes, "it's a race car, not a show car" 🤣
And the colour match is terrible, probably end up wrapping it.

Not sure why you’re surprised about us concreters being handy with a spray gun. You need to have a steady consistent hand when you’re telling other people about how shit their concrete is and how yours would be way better while waving a schooner around without spilling any.

@@theskidfactory yeah. The last time I did a paint job in the garage I had to block off the whole thing, which was a massive pain. Clear coat dust gets everywhere.

9:50 Tobias you legend! This is the one of the reasons I watch TSF, I've picked up so many neat tips.
Last episode referred to it as a “1997” but got it correct here and said “1994”. Love the build. I am of an age that makes me a second generation commodore tragic as these were the “cool” cars rolling around when I was about 10 years of age. I am doing a VR SS build at the moment myself. I am going down the 355 plus super charger route, but still love to see people doing work like this to keep these machines on the roads/tracks. Can’t wait for the first proper skid as it rolls out of the shed.

That colour all over would be epic! It’s easily one of the nicest colours for VR/VS Commodores. Try to get hold of the stock body mouldings too, will give a bit of a sleeper look.
That metallic green always gives me flashbacks to my second car, an Opel Astra F 1.6 from 1997. It had to be taken down to the engine block because the head had to come off. Yeah, when the sparkplug of cylinder #2 decided to drop its electrode at 4500 rpm the exhaust valve wasn't too happy about it - a good chunk of it was missing afterwards. Yeah, good times! 😁😜🤘
The neater you apply the filler the less you have to rub quick tip for you 👌🏽
So cool to see you putting your own touch on Kevo. I love what Al does, and maybe it would have been easy just to slap it together and wire it up and send it, but you are putting in the hours to make it a much better product at the end of the day!
This is why every design I've drawn up for the dream-shed includes a combination finishing room and paint booth for the woodshop and carbon fiber work that is big enough to roll a full size truck into with room to work all the way around it. I want to do work like this but there's no way I'm coating the shop in bog dust and schmutz to do it. Hell, I'll buy an inflatable paint booth before I do that. Looks pretty decent though. Good job.

I cant tell you how many times ive touched, leaned into or my shirt ruined a glass smooth primer job. Last one (mine) i just gave it a good shot and ran it off the bottom of the panel to fill in the shirt mark and it worked great😂. Now i use masking tape around my waist and sleeves when in an engine bay if i dont have a tyvek suit on then its blue tape all over it. You guys did an awesome job man
Using the paint brush for the tricky parts was a game changer for me, doglegs and sil panels were frustrating.
Tobias has an enormous skills and abilities the apprentice Riley putting the hours after work great to see. If Riley sticks with Tobias he will be I very skilled young man.

Use a piece of copper flat bar on the underside of the holes and weld on the top side. Easiest way to do it.
Yeah I was actually using alloy plate! Worked well
Rippa job woody! Little pro tip I learned from a painting pro when setting ya gun up. Open that fan up!! You’ll cover more and less runs! Put your arm at full length in front of you make an L shape with your fingers and open the fan till it’s the same size. Gives you a rough about fan size. Not an exact art but helps a lot! Keep up the good work champion

You could use the rear area to store you toolbox, tyres and jack for drag and drive events instead of running a trailer.
Yeah that’s an option! Still a fair bit of room in the boot area where the spare wheel used to sit. I’ll face that problem when I’m ready😂

For decals you should do them in slightly darker shade but in ghosted-translucent finish …or in just matte?

From my garage painter's experience - switch to Air Dry clears. They are so much easier to work with and ready to be processed in 2-3 hours.

hey Woody , Tobias and gang...stellar job on Kev.....in regards to the front windscreen....Autoglym have glass polish which could bring the windscreen up to new.....i use it all the time on my new Type R.....but if you want to make sure the screen comes up oil and wax etc free....use Autoglym tar remover (i usually use it without polish but either way it works great).....the glass will look like brand new 2nd hand......keep up the epic work and your videos are improving immensely every week.....ignore the mockers and keyboard warriors.....cheers big ears

runs easy to fix....roll mask tap ans carfrefully dab the run with the sticky side of the tape so each dab is on fresh sticky bit. then bomb over lightly and let sit. will melt away and look ok

Clear hose to the back of the car but running it under the car seems like a high chance of definitely getting fluid under the wheels.
Wouldn’t it have been better to run that clear hose through the cabin to your boot mounted spew tank?

I feel your pain man, I painted the bay in my VS a few months back.
Automotive painting isn't an easy task, so don't feel bad about a couple little runs. I've painted a couple vehicles, and one important thing is lighting, even if you need to hold a spotlight so you can see the paint laying down as far as wet coat or dry spray, as well as checking for even color coverage. Pace yourself, I bet you were panicking and just wanted to get the paint out of the gun and on the panels, breathe, spray with a calm steady rhythm. Don't move too slow or whip the gun around either. It's like welding, it comes with practice.
Turn the air pressure down, sounds like it’s to high. Don’t try and get full coverage in the first coat, and slow down don’t rush a paint job. Great channel. Keep up the hard work 👍

You can File off runs with a paint file and wet sand and buff when its dry.
