This was initially released in Black Smooth Bone as the Box Car Whittler. As SuChicken, said. not many have been made. They really should make it more options. I'll need to grab it in Tortoise. Great show and tell! Thanks for sharing.
Hey John you have me scratching my head on this one!!!! It’s a little brute….. not like the normal whittler I’m used to huh 🤔 that’s a interesting one I’ve never seen them before Su said it was out in 2010 wow I missed ever seeing that one…… thanks for showing it it’s always welcoming seeing new knives!!!! 😊
The boxcar whittler! Woohoo! I have two of the three from 2010. I like this beefy, squared-off pattern. Nice spear blade. It’s on my list! Thanks for letting me live vicariously through your purchase. Lol. These are supposed to be coming in tater skin and black bone stag, too. You can find the older ones on eBay sometimes - RR1044 smooth black bone (my somber favorite), 1045 AJB, and 1055 twisted brown bone. I believe these are patterned after the Ka-bar boxcar, a rather flat version with engraved bolsters. Nice!
@@ThriftyKaniffy I’ve bid on a few of the Ka-Bars but never gone high enough. They’re interesting, more of a riverboat gambler vibe. They come in black and a sort of ginger. Okay, I think I’ve talked myself into getting one. Lol.
So I got this pattern off eBay a few months back, in smooth black bone, in a rough Ryder knife lot of about 4 knives. I basically bought the lot for that pattern, and it has some of the best walk n talk of any rough Ryder I own. So when I saw this one, I knew I loved the pattern from owning the black bone version. This one has the 440b, but honestly I can’t tell much of a difference in edge retention from the 440a. The action is a little mushy on mine, lazier snap on main and weaker on little blades. Love that there’s a sheep’s foot too. My black bone “boxcar” one has mirror finish and no swedging on the blades, unlike this one that has both. Def love the pattern, I really like the large spear point blade and smaller sheep’s foot. I also whittlers cuz of the way the springs operate, you usually get a heavier pull on that main with both springs. And the thicker stock on the tang to compensate the width of both springs. All in all, great pattern, wish my tortoise one was as nice as my black bone one, but it’s still a winner for me to put in my carry rotation. Would love to see this in the cinnamon bone carbon series.
I like how different this pattern is, sounds like the blade action was a bit better on mine. Glad you are enjoying your black bone handled one. Thanks, Joel.
Yep, I really like this pattern design, some very nice blades tucked in there. The beefy main blade can get some work done. Thanks for having a look, Sam.
I bought one this year and I am truly impressed. I would really like to see it in smooth bone, any color; every color! Honestly, tobacco bone would be great.
Seen and own smaller Whittlers with the same spear pointish style of main blade but haven't seen one that size. Nice knife, nice little selection of blades.
Great review TK. I had the very same reaction when this knife arrived. I love whittlers but this pattern is different b/c of its size. Its fantastic. So, i did some searching and by luck got an identical pattern in amber jigged bone from rough "rider" off of ebay. That knife is beautiful as well and its the only other rough rider or ryder i've been able to find in that pattern. Happy to send you a pic if you like so you can keep an eye out for it. I would love to see them do a reserve in this pattern.
I just bought one. I like the pattern the most. Blades are secondary concern for me. I like “different” looking knives to buy and I’ve never come across this pattern before.
I have the amber and twisted bone in the boxcars. I missed the black smooth bone. I just received the tortoise. Would love to see this pattern in cinnamon bone, the denim micarta, and just for Tobias ... white smooth bone.
Got to point out you have reviewed one before, the Amber Jigged Bone Whittler, understandable you might forget with all the reviews you do, it is a nice looking knife and a three blade knife I could live with. 😁
Though I wasn't clear, I didn't mean the Whittler pattern in general, but more specifically this style Whittler pattern which I've come to know as the Boxcar Whittler. I've reviewed the Seahorse Whittler and Sowbelly Whittler you might recall. This one is pretty stout comparatively speaking. Thanks, Lewis.
I feel like putting false edges on a “whittler” is a design oversight. Like many other whittler we tend to use our offhand thumb to help stabilize the blade and add strength to the cut
Nice .👍 But , man does Rough Ryder love swedges . I don't think I've ever seen A swedge on a Sheep's Foot before . At $ 15.00 +/- , It would make a fine work knife . Great review .
Cool knife I've watched alot of your reviews and it took up til now to hear at the end of the intro music That Snap of a walk n talk . Being a big fan of true crime the name of this knife could work for a serial killer just saying 🗡☠

Yes, indeed thanks for the info, TG. I suspected it had been made before.

My thoughts as well, Jersey. Good to see a RR you like that you didn't know you wanted. Be good, be well, be safe.
Great vid. I like the pattern. Well done.

I love the fact that no tortoises were harmed in the making of these knives,, 🤣🤣🐢🐢
Very true. Great pattern, this.
Beautiful knives! Always love a Whittler pattern!!
Great blade shapes on this one across the board. Handles have good color transition and translucence. Have a great day, Mike.
Great review Thrifty! Adding this one to my wish list. Love your post review slide shows, they really add a lot!
The boxcar is a great pattern. Thanks Robert, I'm glad the photos are useful.

Thanks TK, another great review, on order tomorrow, a lovely looking knife, another whittler to add to the collection.
Thanks again and take care

Lovely knife. I need to grab something from this series.
The Half Hawk is a good one in this series too. Thanks for stopping in, North Star.
I bought one this year and I am truly impressed. I would really like to see it in smooth bone, any color; every color! Honestly, tobacco bone would be great.
This is the only one I have and would welcome more into the collection.
I always liked the tortoise shell covers
They did a good job with the handles on this one, Bruce. Have a nice day.
Lol stellar timing- I've had that tortoise shell in my cart for 4 days debating on it - great vid man
It's pretty well done. Certainly worth $15 for what you get. Thanks, Chad.
Seen and own smaller Whittlers with the same spear pointish style of main blade but haven't seen one that size. Nice knife, nice little selection of blades.
It's an interesting take on the pattern. I do very much like it. Thanks, JK.
I love a good Whittler and this puppy is unique 🤩👌
Thanks for sharing TK,
Atb Gus👍
It's a pattern I immediate became a fan of. Big chunky love for it. Thanks, Gus. Let me know when you're ready for your interview.
That is a cool looking whittler. Thank you for the show and tell. 😀✝️✌🏼
Yes, indeed. I'm an instant fan of the pattern.
This is a gorgeous knife!!! I need to see if they still have this stock amigo!!
Thanks KD. Looks like they are still available. 👍
It looks to be a nice looking knife. Very tough looking. I love the look of it. Very nice!!
Stout! A bit of surprise. I hope they make some in bone or I can find an older one.
@@ThriftyKaniffy 👍🏻👍🏻
That is a good looking knife. Never saw a whittler quite like that pattern. 👍
Yes, I wasn't familiar with it either. It's called a Boxcar Whittler due to its shape.
Neat little blade and will look into it. Thanks for the 2K giveaway Viper, she arrived yesterday.
Excellent. Hope you liked the prize. Take care, Terrance.
Where to buy this?? I need this one.

I'll have to look for them on eBay now that I'm aware. Thanks for the feedback, David.

This definitely fits in the "different" category. A really cool looking piece IMO. Welcome to the channel Kevin.
A phenomenal value of a knife.
This pattern is pretty cool, I hope RR make more of them. A bone version of some kind would be nice.
I find these tortoise shell knives to be quite pretty. 👌
They are nice when they show a bit of translucence. Cool. Thanks, ST.
I have the amber and twisted bone in the boxcars. I missed the black smooth bone. I just received the tortoise. Would love to see this pattern in cinnamon bone, the denim micarta, and just for Tobias ... white smooth bone.
I'd like to have any of the older ones. May have to hunt one down. Thanks, William and nice collection of the Boxcar Whittlers, impressive.
Good looking knife
Good to hear it. I like it. I hope they continue to produce it in more options.
Solid looking whittler.👍 The pinched bolster doesn’t look bad.
Yes, Lane. The square bolsters are a pretty nice feature of this knife. They look good.

@@ThriftyKaniffy right I misunderstood then yes all Whittlers but variations. 😆
I’ve been searching for this online and cannot find it. Do you have a link to it? Sorry if I missed something.

Alright, thank you Rochd.
Have you seen the new RR whittlers on page 149 of the new SMKW catalog ?
I have seen them, thanks propblast.
Nice big blades, don't hate the recess shield, it would look very nice with bone scales, thanks for showing it.
It's been identified as the Boxcar Whittler and been made before by Rough Ryder. Thanks, Jose
May have to pick one up.🤔👍
If you do let me know how you like it. Thanks, Alpine.
Nice .👍 But , man does Rough Ryder love swedges . I don't think I've ever seen
A swedge on a Sheep's Foot before .
At $ 15.00 +/- , It would make a fine work knife .
Great review .
They do love their swedges. Doesn't bother me so much on this pattern. 👍Take care, Michael.
Nice knife.
A Boxcar Whittler it's being called. Cool.
Its a good looking knife, the scales look good too , good alternative to destructive celluloid .
The handles are much more consistent on this one than the last I bought. Well done, and good value at $15.
Nice rough bust looking whittler.
A very stout knife, Gizmo. Happy to have bought it.
Nice acute point on that Sheep's foot.
Muscular worker...I meant Whittler.
It's a pretty cool RR for just $15 smackaroos. I'm in on this one, gimme more in natural handles.
Cool knife I've watched alot of your reviews and it took up til now to hear at the end of the intro music That Snap of a walk n talk . Being a big fan of true crime the name of this knife could work for a serial killer just saying 🗡☠
A Whittler villain?, sounds good. Yes, the snap is rather subtle I can see why you might have missed it. Thanks, Craig.
I really like the pattern. I'm not a fan of that series though. I did buy my wife a lady leg from the series. She really liked it.
It's not everyones taste. I'm hoping RR do a future release with a handle material I'm more fond of.
As good as any Case knife..
Any? It's nice and I do enjoy it. Thanks, Steve.
Naaaa. 💤
What would wake you from your nap?
Can you tell us where you got that specific mini anvil ?
