  • Welcome to How To Fight, a series intended to teach new players the fundamental ideas and skills needed to improve in a fighting game.
    This is a tutorial that's slightly more intermediate, so I hope you guys enjoy it! This was definitely one of the biggest things that helped me recently, so I'm happy to share it with all of you!

    Very well explained. For intermediate players, I would also add that mashing is still a very legitimate defensive option. In the same way that frame traps act as a check on mashing to enable unsafe pressure, mashing acts as a check on unsafe pressure to force the attacker to use safer frame trap strings where the defender can "block it out" to naturally escape pressure.

    For some reason this game have the most mashing plays in every fighting game I played. MK, Tekken, GG, BB. FUC,VF. I dont meet as many masher as I did in this game
    And even then when I do in those games I feel like I can tell if they are trolling or still newbie, in this game, even players who looks like they know what they are doing still mash, and somehow it works.
    Even at A rank I still meet masher, hell even got matched with few S and still have masher amongst them.
    It throws me off a lot.

      @@ThePantsuPanda I don't often see content about FG concepts get to the point quite like this. There is some short stuff for concepts, some longer stuff, and some videos/guides that bundle it into something larger. But this seems just right: introduce a common scenario, lead into a clear solution.
      I don't really have anything to ask myself, but I'll probably share this video when someone asks about frame traps, and check out the rest of your content when I have the time.

    This video made me learn two things. Yes I learned the benefit of frametraps in pressure, but I also learned that there's probably no such thing as blockstring like in the fighting game that I used to play (MBTL). I had that habit for a while after switching to GBVSR so this is super helpful
    Also very well made, good stuff man!

    • @ThePantsuPanda
      @ThePantsuPanda  5 месяцев назад

      I appreciate it! And yeah, when I started playing games that don't have really complex blockstring canceling systems, I had to totally relearn how pressure works. Street Fighter and Granblue work so differently from something like Guilty Gear or Melty Blood.

    4:35 is important to know the input buffer is 3 frames, most close light into close heavy wont connect if your blockpush input isnt input at least 3 frames before the close heavy input. A little detail for people who play other fighting games like SF6 and don't know that GBVS input is quite tight.

    I always see people saying that you shouldn't focus on learning combos when you start but this right here is why I always learn a few good combos whenever I pick a new character or start playing a new game.
    You need a way to stop people from doing things you don't want them to do, whether thats mashing, jumping, waking up with super. Those are all high risk high reward things, but if you don't know a good punish, then they're just low risk high reward.

    • @alvisdotexe
      @alvisdotexe 5 месяцев назад +1

      I do think what most people mean by 'not focusing on learning combos' is that new players shouldn't spend hours in training mode learning a complex, optimal combo that they don't ever end up landing. That way, either they'll do less damage than a simple combo could have done because they dropped the combo, or they learned combos for specific situations without even knowing how to create or recognize those situations. That all said, you're entirely correct. Some people interpret it as combo practice being useless, even though doing easier combos is exactly the way you learn to do the harder ones lol

    • @JKSpice
      @JKSpice 5 месяцев назад +2

      @@ThePantsuPanda From reviewing a few of my S+ replays just now, I seem to find a lot of success poking at mid-range then confirming into corner carry. Afterwards, I start shimmying to bait out grabs to whiff punish.
      As for knowledge checks, Charlo's only one is her demon flip imo but i abuse that heavily to get max damage off a grab in corner. In Lowain's case, he has some fun set-ups he can do anywhere on screen and that's where I get a good chunk of my damage with him.
      Lowkey have been considering picking up Djeeta/Katalina for a tad bit to force myself to learn corner pressure. I think it would elevate my gameplay overall.

    There can be nuances with throws beating the 4f gap but it can depend on the character like Yuel or dashing into a c.L which will put you closer and can be susceptible to throw.

    Frame trap is what takes you out of the "casual player" zone in my opinion. Once you start doing it, casuals just cant beat you. Even if they recognize that they should stop mashing, they would not know what to do unless they practice scenarios, or learn about what button is safe or not. I encourage my friends to learn this things when we play a new fighting game. Is that, or mash dp everytime you block lmaoo

    I’m struggling with defense in this game. I try not to use brave counter as much because I don’t want to take extra damage and I don’t know when it’s safe to DP when under pressure. Any tips? My opponents seem very good at it and I think it’s just because my pressure sucks because I’m still learning, but when I fight certain characters I don’t know how to get my turn back.

    • @ThePantsuPanda
      @ThePantsuPanda  4 месяца назад

      Without specifically looking at your gameplay, my general advice would be that you shouldn't be afraid of using Brave Counter. Try to save it for moments where someone has you pressed into a corner, and you really need to get out. And, don't be afraid to DP either. If your opponent seems to be ready for that stuff, just be patient and look for good moments to escape. Try to get away from corner situations entirely by jumping over them and returning to neutral, rather than mashing to take a turn back or something. All of these things are good, but have counter play, so make sure to rotate what you're doing on defense to keep your opponent guessing.

      Just went into training mode and tested this. After the defender blocks close standing Light, you’re far enough away that a grab from the defender will whiff. The frame trap will catch their throw whiff in this case.

      When frame data tells you something should work, but the distance or attack hitboxes between characters makes it whiff, we often call those Spacing Traps!
      It's a way to automatically set up a whiff punish. These are pretty rare in Granblue, but common in SF6. Ken and Marisa use them a lot especially. Usually you would use specific attacks to push your opponent out to a range where they *think* they can reach you with a poke, but if they try you will smack their outstretched limb.

    • @ThePantsuPanda
      @ThePantsuPanda  5 месяцев назад

      You can always go into training mode and lab out those scenarios if you want to! This video is specifically about beating mashing. But, like I said in the middle of the video, when you pick an option, other options become stronger. There's nothing in the game that is perfect and will win in every scenario. Just go test those things, figure out an answer for beating them, and then remember that answer if you find a player who likes to beat you in a specific way.
