Man, this got me in the mood to play Smash Ultimate again. I could never get into the game as much as I did Brawl and 4, sadly, but now watching this I just feel so damn motivated to return after a while of being absent from the game!
hey, now is a better time than ever for ultimate specifically because i think a large majority of players have been absent from the game during covid, so with everyone coming back, the game appears to be on the upswing + everyone is a little rusty rn

The Lucas player was very creative and read-based, I loved it!
Playing Roy by sitting back and watching the opponent go noodle arms trying to hit me, and then punishing it has been pretty effective, surprisingly. It's much better too because I can consistently land more jabs, which means more advantage state for me. I play so many people that pretend they're perpetually in advantage/trying to skip neutral.
1:17 Out of all Ganon's moves, f smash actually hits the lowest. In that respect it's the best move for hitting ledge hangers.

There is one group of people who will never listen to this advice and that is Roy mains
Nah man Roy is way more fun when you play him slowly and methodically in neutral but then explode with aggression when you get into advantage state. Sadly most of me fellow Roy mains prefer a different style of play (full hop fair and run up jab spam lol).

For real. People don't seem to understand that Roy becomes like 10x better when you watch the opponent swing too far out and then punish it because it nets you so many more jabs (or any of our combo starters, honestly), which is our win condition. Aerial mashing can only get you so far.
Goblin for sure. Kola mashes as well but he has a balance.

People who have bad refresh rates like to just mash when they're not sure of what the opponent is going to do. That's why top players can play both faster than everyone else and slower than everyone else. It's not that they simply know how to play fast or slow, but it's that they are so experienced in different scenarios that they can immediately respond and adapt when their positioning is off. That's why top players mix up so much. When you don't know what to expect, it's a lot harder to react to a new situation because you have to take time and process what is happening and what is about to happen next. It's also why top players play pretty fast in the first few interactions, but once things start going to last hit, the pace of the game drastically slows down, because both players know that habits and strategies have been downloaded, and that they need to be on the lookout for openings in order to win.

so I understand the concept of mashing and why it's bad, but how do I get myself out of combos/being juggled ? I'll either DI away from where I'm being attacked from or I'll try to air dodge but that doesn't always work . nothing is more frustrating than not knowing wtf I be doing wrong . I save my replays when I get smacked and i can't figure out defensively what I'm supposed to do
You have to weigh risk and reward in some scenarios. Sometimes it's better to take the hit and DI somewhere safe, like closer to the ledge rather than trying to rush to center stage. I also recommend knowing what combo or hit your opponent is trying to land so you can anticipate and move accordingly. I used to have your problem as well. I'd always double jump or dodge out of the way too soon. And when you panic like that you'll be easy to bait into a deadly punish.
You are going to be hit and you are going to be in a combo. That's is something you can't avoid. Just because you got hit doesn't mean the end of the world just safely land back on stage or retreat to ledge
