I'm definitely here for the disrespect and shit talk, but your educational content always makes more sense to me than most guides. Hope to see more of this.
My absolute favorite part of this is that despite how good these tips are and how fundamental they are to normal gameplay, half of them barely even apply to the person teaching them because of his specific playstyle and he just KNOWS THEM ANYWAY
It's like with art or writing. You can't make good works of art or literature without the fundamentals, but once you DO know them, you can remix them, fuck with them, and disregard them in the perfect ways to make something truly special. Dr Martin Luther King's speeches have a lot of redundancy and repetitive words, which you're taught not to do so that you don't lose your reader's interest, but he uses that to achieve the opposite effect and have an escalating staircase of emphasis on his words. You need to know exactly what the rules are so you can break them in the most effective manner
One thing I always recommend to players who are trying to improve and are still newer is that they might need to practice looking directly at their opponent's character instead of their own. It took me YEARS to really force myself to shift my focus from tracking my own character's position to watching the opponent. You should be able to be aware enough of your character's position and actions that you can keep them in the peripheral vision at best. Doing that makes it way, way easier to download your opponent's habits, space against them, and figure out what to do next.
Besides auto cancelling to land, its also helpful to know which moves take the smallest time total. If you get sent near the blast zone but dont die, you usually want to get out of tumble as fast as possible, usually with an aerial, so you have all access to all of your characters tools to get back to neutral. So if you're mario for example, bair and up air will be much better to get out of tumble than dair, fair and nair. You should know this for your character.
And there's no need to time it perfectly either. Just hold your c-stick in the direction of the aerial you want to do and your character will perform it the moment it's possible
@@ngotemna8875if you’re close to the blastzone doing this could potentially lead to you dying where you would have otherwise survived by extending your hurtbox into the blastzone.
Do moves take longer to come out when I'm in tumble or why am I in a hurry if I can get out of tumble with a move? Am I not susceptible to a whiff punish and should therefore only go out of tumble when necessary?
@@airhead3409When in tumble you can’t fast fall so you would be limiting your options off stage. Also, typically if you are sent far off stage like the original comment was suggesting it is unlikely your opponent can whiff punish you. Obviously, you should still gauge your opponent’s options and plan accordingly but as a general rule I would say getting out of tumble quickly is a great idea for most characters in this scenario.
Thank you for talking about that huge mistake Marcina mains make. I see this crap all of the time and it makes the MU so much easier lol. They just swing and swing and swing. I love how, as Lucina, you didn't immediately chase the shiek during the juggles. I do that too, and it's so good for getting extra damage, especially since Marth's up air is so good. Great video from the greatest content creator 👏 👌
btw for the wifi warriors, jump get up is best offline but online it depends if your opponent has lingering moves like a palu dtilt or something if they dont, like lucina for example, neutral get up is broken because you have to time your move to the like 1 frame of vulnerability, which is very hard online where connections and by extension timings are inconsistent
To get a landings often you should di in a way that gives you enough space to squeeze an aerial out Di is a huge part of this game, it’s something unique to smash
So.. pick up ZSS or Steve if you want to get better at the game. Got it! 😆 All jokes aside, this was a very well-informed tips video. Thank you, Marss. 👍
I want to start with the fact that I am not amazing at the game. One thing I do punish a lot of people for is when they use the same aggressive (like a buffered option) or landing hitbox. The former (think Squirtle FAIR) is relatively simple to counter if you are in the general proximity and flick shield when in range, and the latter is usually when people will try to land with stuff like joker nair out of a full-hop. Mixing in tomahawk grabs, empty hops and spacing mix-ups is a good way to keep the opponent guessing.
that thumbnail though. I like how you make use of the base training mode, by using the items to demonstrate mashing out of hitstun. Using training mode like a blackboard
@@Hags_95 •when a character gets hit they can be put into tumble which if they are low to the ground will require them to tech. getting tumble usually only happens past ~10% but will depend a lot on your weight and the knockback of the move you got hit by. •but lets say you have noticed you got sent high enough you don't*have* to tech and could do something like jump instead. you could do that OR if you want to completely remove yourself from disadvantage you could "a land". land with a low lag aerial (usually nair) with fastfall. or you could •auto cancel *best option* usually your dair. pretend you want to throw an aerial but not hit your opponent so you fastfall before the hitbox comes out thats an auto cancel. this is your most useful auto cancel use but some moves like ike side b have window for it after the move is over like you see in the video. your best bet is to look up your characters frame data to find out what is applicable. *ta da*
@@Hags_95 also if you decide test this out for yourself it's actually really easy. the best way to see it without mods is your character with normal aerial lag usually looks like it's laying on the ground for a quick sec because of lag. you won't see this in an auto cancel. (this is most obvious in aerials with high lag like dk fair)
good stuff here. i'd just like to say that there's some solid advice, but i feel like i was left with more questions cuz i gotta learn how to do this stuff now like the lag canceling after the aerials. idk if the video was intended to be like a "just do this instead" or a "go learn this," but i know where to go in terms of personal improvement at least (thanks👍)
Marss, I would come into your stream and ask questions, but I have been banned in chat for two years for saying "I like ya cut G" when you shaved your head.
12 minutes in and you're talking about Snake, thanks Santa. Picked him up after 4 or 5 other options as well as after refining fundamentals through those, other characters. Flashy trapper/punisher (by self!) Meaning... youre punishing yourself. Awesome scrub stomper.
I am in elite Smash. #1 is fair. #2 I have to improve on. My only mix up is drop down, but I can't mix up the four main options too well. #3 is good, though it depends on your skill with the character. Zelda teleporting sideways to the ledge is my big weakness, with her I'd rather double jump early. #4 is something I am not good at--I absolutely sometimes overcommit. Unless I'm using projectiles. #5 auto canceling out of tumble? I think I'll try that even more often with more moves.
“You’re probably challenging your way down or doing the same thing over and over” but they’re not gonna expect the 5th DK side b in a row fr..
The no-mixup mixup works man! I seen you messing up top players on their own streams by going for bad options- works well once they respect you lmfao
And that's how someone gets 3-0 and wonder what happened
Real
Same, but opposite
I see GnW downair for the 6th time and think "No way Falcon Ub-B loses THIS time!"

Damn, marss kind of a good teacher for a masher
Thanks for the free tips Marss, love the intelligent insight you give.
this is such a good vid and i hope to see more like this. super helpful stuff thanks marss!
Now THIS Is peak marss content. Please do more
This was a really good video. The way you explained it was very intelligent but simple and easy to understand.
Marss is just conditioning his audience for the next Marss Vs. The world. Big brain

I loved this video! You explain interactions in such a concise and clear way.
actual good advice , especially the stay grounded in adv.state with low endlag moves and not mashing out of hit stun
I have been waiting so long for Marss to make content like this. Please, keep it coming!!!
Finally teacher marss. I've been waiting for this for so long. He's a good teacher legit.
The content we want. The content we need. Thx marss

Dang this is my favorite vid in a while
Thank you for the cloud tutorial, Marss!
This video would have been a massive call out two weeks back. But I finally made it to elite….. And I absolutely hate it.
One cool thing I like about snake is that if you downward air dodge below a platform after a full hope you can make it into the platform too
its actually nice to learn stuff from you, thanks !
Disadvantage you can use your directional airdodge to retreat or land on a platform or grab ledge
Ledge grab hitbox is bigger in the front
17:17 that was a sexy pivot grab
Love the educational content more than anything

That was very very interesting thanks marss
was expecting this to just be jokes and disrespect but I actually learned some stuff even though I've been playing competetively for years
1. Stay in shield
2. Never attack
3. ????
4. Shield break
This has actually really fucking helped me, and I really didn't expect this from mars
Jump getup is dangerous tho bc it leaves you susceptible to any form of attack that goes up.
i didn't expect this to be a serious educational video lol
Actually super helpful. Idk if you read comments, but thanks man
loving the top 5s
It would be interesting if you made a video going over what you think are some of the worst habits of top players
Very cool Marss.
Could Mars’s transition to a online teacher of smash ? That would be sick and very helpful
the first ever non toxic marss video??
Great video! well, at least from what I can tell 2 seconds in.
This video came out a day too late for that elite smash jab at the start lol I got Terrence Bogard in there yesterday
More prof marss
Now do that 50 times faster with a lot of nuance and game knowledge mixed in and you are a top player!
He said jump should be the scared option, Im a meta knight player who used to main riddley and dark pit. I was playing the floor is lava
So to summarise, 3 reasons why I suck at smash; my disadvantage is garbage, my neutral is garbage and my advantage is garbage
I wad having a good day until marss' editor put in that fucking Steve image
now this is content
How do you do the a landing
Better question: how do I survive Difficulty 9?
Can we start a petition for Marss to start publishing full plays of other games? Can I pay him somewhere?
I was expecting other kind of "smash", I guess I need to stop being bad at both
"i can punish this shit with a falcon punch"
Jokes on you Marrs, I'll never stop being bad at smash because mash is life.
I've learned playing Marth that a Marthcina under a platform in Ultimate is really good~~~
Thank you time to get better
We need more lesson videos.... Specifically for Falcon
I see now how big of a scrub I am. Hopefully I can take something back from this valuable stock session 😅
Jump away to escape is such a zss ass piece of advice
i was pretty surprised to see how many competitive smash fans didn't know about stuff like auto cancels
I still didn't get it 😂
