I liked this movie a lot. The horror came not as much from the story as it did from the setting, the atmosphere of boring depresssing sameness and the idea of no escape from it. It made me feel extremely claustrophobic. I'm a big horror fan and I've read and watched so much horror that often I can't feel scared anymore, but this felt unique enough for me to be genuinely spooked, not to mention completely emotionally devastated for the main characters' horrible fates. The acting in this movie is incredible. It made me feel like I'm there, trapped with them, and after watching it I had to go out and feel the wind and hear the birds just to feel better. I'm also a sucker for non-euclidian spaces, loved the tripping through realities scene, just really liked this movie and would give it 8/10.

@@boogiedaddy3434 well I enjoyed the foreshadowing and it helps to set the tone to think about both the literal sci-fy narrative and the themes on relationships and the nature of reality and what not. All I can say is my head hurts and I have so many unanswered questions but still an interesting movie just a bit too much on the depressing side for me .
Very original flick.....need more like it.Movies are very cookie cutter these days. I do feel like they should have taken more time to explain what that book was tho
**SPOILERS ALERT, DON'T READ IT IF YOU ARE PLANING ON WATCHING** I'm 15 year old, and I think that this movie is pointless. Or I'm too young to undertstand it. My opinions are that it is so strange. So are these "robotic people" getting real people to be their child's mother and father, like slaves? They are literally slaves and they are forced to raise the child. And after that the child who now grew up goes in the city where Martin was, and Martin is almost dead from working too much and he dies, and this guy takes his place which also he is a slave too. Totally pointless in my opinion. I don't get it how it got 6/10 raiting.
This movie is about the life cycle of an alien or interdimensional species who look close enough to humans that they make us raise their children like the Cuckoo bird. It goes through the species whole life cycle in the film.
The alien language explaining to the child what he needed to do. He learned basic alien language via the brain washing tv images. Then he read the book and figured out he had to kill both of them and go back to the real estate agents spot to take his place. Just my thoughts
It’s one of two things. I have heard some say it’s some complicated computer language that the boy (part of the simulation of Yonder) reads and understands. However, my belief is that it is actually some sort of ancient runic alien language that he was taught by the people he met but couldn’t tell Gemma about, who told him who his real parents were, and who and what he really was (an inter dimensional shape shifting alien).
My understanding was they should of raised him like there very own son and loved him and things would of been different 🤷♀️ they where crappy parents a baby don't have to be your biological child to love him or her they got blessed with a baby there job was to raise him and love him and be a family when u think about it they were really ungrateful they didn't have to work pay bills or anything just raise the child 😒
Julie Malave oh yeah.... suuuuuper ungrateful. That’s insane it is a freaking mutant and not human, I would have buried it in the hole after Tom hit 6 feet deep

It could have been an awesome black-mirror-esk film, and it started off good, but they totally wasted Eisenberg's ability to be smart and figure stuff out. By the end I was totally frustrated. Total dog crap of a movie.

I passed this over two nights ago cause the reviews were mixed so I didn’t want to spend my money on it. I watched The Clovehitch Killer which is actually a really good serial killer movie that I highly recommend.
I loved it, but I disliked the ending so much, but I am glad at least shined light on what it was about. Human scientists allowing Extraterrestrials To experiment on humans on an agreement not to cause harm to the planet
the idea is that these dimensional beings want to study human behavior, so they make the perfect home and perfect neighborhood and perfect clouds, but they lack humanity so it feels empty and misunderstood
I enjoyed it, but wish there was more development in the movie. It seemed to be lacking any character progression. Unless that was one of the points of the movie. I like movies like this.
I was looking forward to this movie. The answer to your question is no. That's not how is supposed to be having a child but maybe an alien child? Lol I like it. It was only fair that the creepy alien didn't have any mercy on them.
I loved it it was a totally different kind of movie. I wish the girl would have made it out Somehow. But honestly I probably wouldn't want along with the tone of the movie. I agree I wish the movie would kind of gave you a little more but I still liked it. Great review as always
Ummmm.... it had all the answers. It's about how gnarly "nature" is and how alien creatures like interdimensional cookoos can give us an idea of how alien reality really is underneath.

See your being too nice about this movie it was a waste of time the beginning build you up for the biggest disappoint in the end this movie was pointless and trash
I get that the foreshadowing was always there but personally I don't like *forced* hopeless scenarios. I can't explain why but when it's hopeless "just because" then it's annoying. Especially when the commentary's as loud as the annoying kid. It's an anti nuclear family flick I guess and having kids takes up so much of your time you never get to do anything else. Sex can't be as loud because the kids watching, becareful what you say because the kids watching, I get it. But we got the point less than 30mins in and nothing else happened.

@@narwa3991 No offense, but I'm both a visual artist (professionally), musician (hobby/15 years), and did freelance editing for short stories. It's an alien cukoo obviously.
Really? Never would have guessed that after watching the first 30 seconds of the movie.
@@boogiedaddy3434 well I enjoyed the foreshadowing and it helps to set the tone to think about both the literal sci-fy narrative and the themes on relationships and the nature of reality and what not. You didn't spend a few minutes thinking about how gnarly the concept of a cookoo is from an actual cookoos perspective? A creature that creates a parasitic surrogate child that kills it's siblings and overburdens it's host parents often to death? You don't ever think about what kinds of crazy weird aliens might exist out there in the galaxy maybe with potential access to crazy reality bending technology? GTFO here bro, this film was sick...
@@alejandroguerra9413 dude, I never said it was a bad movie. I just would have liked to have seen where the aliens came from and some more character development in the beginning. No part of that means it was a bad movie.
@@boogiedaddy3434 There should be a good sequel or prequel
Just started watching this now , Martin has left the building 👀🙌🏽🤣
Edit : just finished the movie I’ve seen stranger movies like “enter the void” so this isn’t quite on that level. All I can say is my head hurts and I have so many unanswered questions but still an interesting movie just a bit too much on the depressing side for me .
Very original flick.....need more like it.Movies are very cookie cutter these days. I do feel like they should have taken more time to explain what that book was tho
i haven’t stopped thinking about it since i’ve watched it. i loved it
Just watched it.. And I'm confused lol
Same here 😂😂😂
It wasted my time
They where aliens who trapped humans so they could study them and mimic them
@@Exype interesting. 🤔🤔
Liked this flick...i was skeptical when i saw the budget and cast...but i was proven wrong
**SPOILERS ALERT, DON'T READ IT IF YOU ARE PLANING ON WATCHING**
I'm 15 year old, and I think that this movie is pointless.
Or I'm too young to undertstand it. My opinions are that
it is so strange. So are these "robotic people" getting real
people to be their child's mother and father, like slaves?
They are literally slaves and they are forced to raise the child.
And after that the child who now grew up goes in the city
where Martin was, and Martin is almost dead from working
too much and he dies, and this guy takes his place which also
he is a slave too. Totally pointless in my opinion. I don't get it
how it got 6/10 raiting.
This movie is about the life cycle of an alien or interdimensional species who look close enough to humans that they make us raise their children like the Cuckoo bird. It goes through the species whole life cycle in the film.
It was an okay movie, definitely strange and confusing at times but, Imogen Poots had an amazing performance
Didn’t read all comments….was ‘Martin’ short for ‘Martian’?
Was waiting for him to dig deep enough to hit ( the spaceship maybe) but no, no pay off.
Came to Austin for an explanation, still nothing.
the scene where she reads the red book... I sat there and paused on the screen tried to read into it... I couldn't. What was that book!?
Vivarium was great. Jesse is a beast at acting.
Hey man, love your reviews! Can you do a list of your top 10 (more or less) A24 movies?
I love when movies are ambiguous.
@@brytonup1551 that's just it I don't think you could burry it lol u seen how it creeped under that ground out of no where I was like 😳 that part confused me lol
it's what you ACTUALLY look like & accomplish (btw) when u just FOLLOW the HERD - just as sooo many do nowadays with the perverse obsession with SoCiAL MeDiA..
So when they drove into that town did they drive into another dimension ?
Other wise how come other people didnt just randomly find it and how didn't the govermant know ?
Watch the movie. U are obviously interested. Telling u ruins it.
@@btnhstillfire i did watch it hahahha, and it didn't answer my questions
they were either in an alternate dimension/ in a simulation
@@bigherb Writers are from Ireland. Lots of folklore there about "fairies" who can create hallucinations and alternate realities.
@@darkduck3677 they do be drinking 😎 but that's an interesting point
THIS movie would of been muuuuuuuch better if they dug more into the HORROR aspect as the description claimed it to be ..... the whole movie gets interesting when poots character had no other option left and to kill the boy my eyes nearly popped out my head after seeing what he did afterwards this should of been revealed half way into the movie and then had her or him being chased through all the other families stuck etc etc etc .... i would of wrote a MUCH better film smh but this too shall pass smh !
The kid grew up to be Jessi Eisenbergs spitting image
It could have been an awesome black-mirror-esk film, and it started off good, but they totally wasted Eisenberg's ability to be smart and figure stuff out. By the end I was totally frustrated. Total dog crap of a movie.
how come i never knew about this movie 😩. I was amazed when i watched it , its very interesting and i hope they made a sequeal for that as well.
I got into this without knowing anything I thought it would be sad like Artificial Intelligence because of the boy but then the boy TALKED WITH THAT CREEPY VOICE OK BYE
I passed this over two nights ago cause the reviews were mixed so I didn’t want to spend my money on it. I watched The Clovehitch Killer which is actually a really good serial killer movie that I highly recommend.
unkown user, 🤔 Then I may like it. I do like movies puzzling films haha
Good acting. A coo-coo life form. Better than average but could have better management of suspense.
I loved it, it shows what live really is. A forced useless horrible experience.
A little happy ending were the characters themselves would know
what and why this is happening to them would have been much
appreciated.
Gabriel Naser not every movie has a happy ending
where to watch this
I enjoyed it, but wish there was more development in the movie. It seemed to be lacking any character progression. Unless that was one of the points of the movie. I like movies like this.
Raising a kid is.......exactly like that but fulfilling.
I was on the edge of my seat the hole time waiting for salvation but instead , cold reality … aka 8/10
I hate how easy they made him fall sick for a young healthy dude; but the scene where the creepy son takes out the body bag was 👍👍👍👍 ouch 👍👍
It seems weird as hell
You really need to have done a lot of psychedelics and a open mind to
see how deep this plot could really be,and what it could be insinuating!
No just intelligent and open minded. I've never done psychedelics and I love analyzing this film.
Ummmm.... it had all the answers. It's about how gnarly "nature" is and how alien creatures like interdimensional cookoos can give us an idea of how alien reality really is underneath.
when a little boy meets a bullfrog: the untold story
Vivarium is.....”Hey, I’m a teacher, my boyfriend’s a dirt guy...let’s look at a house-wait no-I mean maybe yes, ok, yes -oh crap we’re stuck here with a creepy Mormon mutant(pardon the redundancy) ...(spare the spoiler)
Austin and his wife won't have children 😂
It was a good movie, still it wasn't even my favourite Eisenberg-Poots 2019 movie.
Accurate 😂
This sounds interesting but I will probably wait for it to show up on Amazon etc later this year. Nice review.
It's because you don't understand cukoos and their nesting habits. Was too nerdy for you....
@@narwa3991 well, can't account for taste or intelligence... go watch something dumber then.
@@narwa3991 actually to really get it, you'd also need to know about fractals, additional potential spatial dimensions, psychology, a few things.... it's not for everyone...
@@narwa3991 No offense, but I'm both a visual artist (professionally), musician (hobby/15 years), and did freelance editing for short stories. The movie was definitely not shit, but it went over a lot of heads for various reasons. The entire idea of the movie is foreshadowed in the initial scene with the baby birds and then was carried out to absolute perfection, everything from cinematography to color palette, to writing was on point. 4.5/5 movie.
If you only enjoy certain types of movies, then it's likely to fall flat on YOU, if you enjoy good movies and art... well we probably wouldn't be having this discussion.
