If you've ever puzzled over where estate agents come from, this film documents their life cycle.
lmao
Brilliant yes..just watched it
Very witty! Superb.
Thank God for a real film analysis video instead of another "ending explained" video
Especially since the ending needed no explanation.
The ending was obvious from the beginning of the film.
It's not a kermode review without an exorcist reference
I watched this whilst in hospital and unable to leave, definitely the environment you watch it in, the greater the impact....loved it
This film really amplified those fears of being trapped, life wasted, never being able to reach ones true potential in life, turning into something that reflects a lesser life lived.
I don’t think there needed to be some great twist, or answers to questions......and I usually feel irritated by films that are open ended, or lack explanation , if it feels they’re that way because the writer couldn’t think of a conclusion.
I feel the horror of there being no answers.....nothing at all....no taste, no atmosphere, no context, no reason, no success, no failure, no friends.....adds to the stifling nothingness. This is my worst fear!

It seems to me to reflect something like existentialism. Clearly Gemma and Tom are stuck in Yonder and after almost 100 days of trying to get out, when they truly realize they are stuck, their actions reveal a lot about their psychology (Tom literally begins digging his own grave)
This movie sucks and pointless
@@shaibullard8870 just like life
I AGREED WITH ALL OF YOU. VIVARIUM IS WROST MOVIE EVER BECAUSE OF LORCAN FINNEGAN AND GARRET STANLEY. WE ALL HATE VIVARIUM >:(
ALSO. THIS NOT A JOKE
MARTIN IS VILLAIN
NOBODY ESCAPE YONDERS BECAUSE OF LORCAN FINNEGAN AND GARRET STANLEY. I HOPE THEY WILL GET ARRESTED. AND WE’RE ALL VIVARIUM HATERS
The hyperreality, the the way the couple resign themselves to being trapped in something that is simultaneously mundane and at the same time terrifying, and that sense of moving towards horriffic inevitability reminds me of La Cabina by Antonio Mercero.
But La Cabina was condensed into a 30ish minute horror short -and I get the feeling that this could and should have been similarly condensed - like an hour long Outer Limits or Twlight Zone episode rather than a feature length movie
As someone who is super picky about what movies I watch this movie absolutely blew me away, a fascinating and terrifying concept that was executed beautifully!
i really enjoyed this and didn't think it was too long. i honestly believe that people's attentions spans are decreasing. i loved the surrealism and uncertainty of it and was reminded quite a lot of another film called "Enemy"
i loved this too. imo a lot of one-trick stories feel stretched too thin ... but i think this perfectly explored the boundaries of the idea. and to my delight ... i wasn't screaming at the tv "why don't you try X" for a change. they really tried all the things. you saw the boundaries of the trap, but the idea was complete enough to sustain a movie length exploration of the characters' trajectory. many film makers try to show off their skills by making a sparse, atmospheric movie work ... but reveal they don't have as much skill as they think. i struggle with attention span, but this really held my attention
It illustrates a lifeless vacuum ; the terror of inescapable mundanity, a disturbing surreal nightmare in blazing sunshine, housed at n0 9....the 9th circle of Hell perhaps...the film has a lot to say about the possibilities of human life and the limitations of a regimented, " expected " life of how others wish you to live and behave and " fit in ", a kind of group-hysteria " Vertigo " as someone or something makes you into what they want you to be while stifling freedom of choice, the crushing of dreams and an utterly ruined future and settling for less in an eternally compromised world, I think its a Great film with many questions asked and many yet to be answered, a fascinating insight into the " inhuman condition ".
Clever review. The guy realized that he was digging their own grave was something profound
Now I know how the reed warbler feels. The film is superb but for me, illustrates that nature contains more horror than we imagine.
"I can't believe I used the word 'relatable'."
Could not help but think whether is this what our pets feel like. We think we are providing them a happy life but are they actually sad that they are unable to be a stray animal spending time with their own kind!!!!
Best film of 2020
4:27 I reckon it was the sound of an orange falling from a table onto the floor. I'd be interested to hear what any of the rest of you think.
It was closer to the microphone than the floor, more likely a pen falling on paper
😂 Yeah, there’s something of the half full water bottle about it
Kermode is spot on here. I really enjoyed the film, very clever with little hidden messages throughout. Not sure why it has some poor reviews, at least it’s original.
Not enough explosions and superheros
I loved this movie and felt it was very tight and didn’t waste any scenes. Each scene felt crafted to hammer home the point. And I liked that the script was very short and there wasn’t a lot of talking. Talking is wayyy overdone in movies imo and doesn’t feel real life to me.
yes! it was tight. sparse movies usually feel like they've been padded out to fill time, because they're made by dull uninventive people. this really felt like every foot of film was carefully put to good use
It reminded me of the Frederik Pohl story "Tunnel under the World"
We’re not supposed to get answers just like the characters.
and who needs it. A spaceship lifting off or a portal to another dimension would have been a great way to make this film completely forgettable
Such a brilliant film, really creeped me out.
I did like it. The only problem was they were in #9 and that reminded me that the Inside #9 boys could have done this just as effectively in half an hour.
Films are getting good again, it's cool.
Especially horror movies
@@alansmithee4927 Fast forward 3 years later, as in now, and no, not really, this just happened to be a gem
‘Inside No.9'?!!
Edit: I guess we’re *ALL* "inside no.9" now!😳🦠🦠🦠
People look too deeply into the film. They’re one of many that are lured into a mock-up environment to raise aliens to so they can acclimate to earth.
Why is everyone complaining about the lack of explanation? That's the thing that makes this movie special, it doesn't lead your hand and tell you what to think, there's lots of room for imagination and making everything explainable and clear is exactly what would make this movie just another bland alien film, it would take the entire cosmic horror feeling away and you'd probably forget about it two days later. It shows you enough to guess that there's aliens and the lack of answers is the scary part.
This movie is pointless and crap
I don't think the film entirely stuck its landing, but it's undeniably striking in a visual sense. This director is going places. As for the explanation of the plot, it rests within the title. Google the definition of Vivarium. The film is more of a comedic satire than a horror film, imo.
its like the lives everyone lives, work ,sleep ,eat, repeat . then die, then someone new moves in and the cycle repeats.
Are you psychic? its true

I haven't seen it yet but I'm glad I saw this review. I don't mind a script with a lot of empty space as long as it's well constructed and I don't have myself wound up for a faster pace. Will save this one for an introspective mood.

I watched this last night. Excellent performances by the lead actors. It was an interesting premise but I felt the film dragged from half way and there were too many unanswered questions by the end. It could have been a lot better. Given our current circumstances it's an ideal time to watch this movie. 6/10.
Ok. So in the end the movie was about how aliens abduct humans to raise their young. And the only explanation is what she tells the girl in the beginning about the kookoo: it’s just nature
wait... is relatable not a word?! and hey why don't you guys do the review over video call?
Also, had no idea the main female character was the same female actress/daughter, cast in the movie '28 days later'.
I've always wondered what weakened, then eventually killed the surrogate parents, here's my theories.
1. The soil, I do believe the soil, or clay, that the 'Tom'? or the male character was digging up was toxic.
There's a scene, early on during digging, where camera zooms in on odd clay like soil
2. The food, I do believe the food lacked proper nutrition to sustain human life, but makes you wonder how the alien kid was able to survive and thrive, since it, or he, was eating the same stuff.
3, Maybe sped up time?
I mean since the alien kid grew up like puppy dog speed, maybe being in that dimension sped of the aging process on the couple as well.
imo it's irrelevant to the story. the story here is that they have been tricked into hosting a parasite, and in the typical callous nature of the parasite, the process is incidentally fatal to the host ... but the parasite is the product of countless generations, and not only difficult to escape, but embraced willingly. the exact mechanism is a less interesting story
@@5naxalotl Interesting...
Movie buffs, do you know any films like this? :D I love surreal/supernatural movies about feeling trapped with very few actors/locations. I love “In the Tall Grass”, “The Hole In the Ground”, “The Others” etc. I recommend the Korean film “Hansel and Gretal” to those who want something like Vivarium. I really need more to get me through the quarantine :)
I haven't seen this one, but if you want surreal/supernatural films about feeling trapped, then I would highly recommend Roman Polanski's apartment trilogy (just pirate them if you feel uncomfortable about his personal life). The most famous one of the three - if you haven't already seen it anyways - is Rosemary's Baby. Another example (clearly influenced by Polanski) is the Coen Brothers' Barton Fink. Since you mentioned The Others, I'd also point to classic haunted house films such as The Innocents as well as more contemporary works such as The Orphanage. Your comment also makes me think of thrillers, for example all the Hitchcock classics mostly (or exclusively) set in one location such as Rear Window, Lifeboat, Rope (among others). Unfortunately I'm only familiar with one of the films you listed, so I had to go by your description of the kind of films you're looking for.
Color out of Space.
DAVID LYNCH FILMS, or Riley Stearns' stuff too. Sam Esmail? Sebastian Hofmann? Park Chan-Wook? Neil Blomkampp? Maybe not the best recommendations. But I'd check these fellas work out! Jennifer Kent is great. Obv there's Wes Craven, Carpenter and Cronenberg but that may not be quite right either.
The Divide is also similar in theme
oh i really liked The Others. what a neat little setup. i also love Severance, and one of the very best time loop movies in Palm Springs. maybe have a look at I Am Mother
I really enjoyed it 👍🏻
I think he got the explanation spot on. Although he could have gone further. For instance, taking responsibility for the child that wasn't planned for.

We are in lockdown in New Zealand perfect isolation movie...I could relate to the fact its just the same people in the bubble.. All self isolating just like me and my family

Where can we see the film?
tripppyyyy movie!
What’s wrong with using the word “relatable” lol
The final act falls apart
So much set up but no answers
5/10
Yip, i found it dull
When she got the book I thought we were getting somewhere but then it’s just like, the guy who dresses the same and has the same hair as the real estate agent... is a real estate agent
This movie is weird and pointless 🤦🏾♂️ and they don't even any answers to what's going on or why it happened
no answers to WHAT questions?...
I think they probably explained too much.
If you liked this movie as much as I did, then also watch The Incident. It will blow your mind.
The Cuckoo bird theory makes a fair amount of sense.
Not really, I mean why weren't the aliens able to raise their own offspring?
Especially if they looked so human like.
You know, this might sound crazy, but for the right kind of person, this isn't necessarily a bad fate,
Let's say you're a person close to retirement, and you are in financial trouble, without any significant friendships, would it really be so bad to just be whisked away and given a free house and food, (however tasteless) to live out the rest of your days in return for some light parenting duties?
a weirdly good point. a lot of host/parasite relationships feel acceptable to the host, through eons of evolution, even though it's ultimately destructive ... and possibly because their brain has been rewired
How did the woman die?? She just all the sudden died, there wasn't much indication that it was going to happen other than her coughing a few times
Interesting premise, cool visuals, good first
act and setup then nothing, paperthin metaphors shoved down your throat,
cardboard cutouts of characters and an utterly underwhelming climax, I
felt numb and empty at the end of the film, such a promising start
turned into a below average episode of the twilight zone with an ending
you can see coming 45 minutes in.
5/10, poots was the best part and Eisenberg was underutalised.
Allan Tomlinson 100%. Just finished this and it was so blah and underwhelming.
Then you got exactly what the film was trying to say. It is the nightmare of suburbia...it's about the trip, not the destination as a film. It expresses in horrifying simplicity the modern ideal of living and what it does to people psychologically.
I think it did exactly what it was supposed to do.
Totally disagree. Can’t wait for the sequel.
A good movie that should have been an excellent episode of black mirror
Good review of a good movie.
I have to agree with Simon on this one. Saw it at a film festival last year and the general vibe I got from the audience was that they (and me) lost interest somewhere around the half-way mark when it was clear that it had said and done all it was going to do.
That cloud in your profile is not real right? Btw woof woof. Woof
I loved this film
The music doing the heavy lifting. Brilliant.
I saw the director's short film Foxes that Kermode mentioned here and it was very generic and lacklustre. A lot of short films today fall into "the moody alienation montage" mode where the whole story is just a succession of vaguely ominous scenes of characters disconnected from each other with a droning soundtrack. I know because I fell into pretty much the same trap with my first short film.
@@southlondon86 Haha if you're being sincere thank you for the interest. My second short is very different but it is currently still in post-production - not sure if it will be much good but at least it's not generic.
You really need to have done a lot of psychedelics and a open mind to see how deep this plot could really be,and what it could be insinuating!

Good review. I just saw the movie yesterday. Nah, it wouldn't be worth watching this film at the movies. It felt much more like an episode of Twilight Zone, Outer Limimit, Black Mirror.... My only comment about the characters now is: it really didn't feel like they were eaven trying to do the best of the situation...
Me, I love solitude, had I been in that situation, it probably would have seemed more like heaven to me, I'd of been exploring all the other houses for sure though.
Also, I wish they gave a better timeline to how long they were there.
The token reference to "The Exorcist" by the Good Doctor is delicious at 5:44.
Stop bringing everything back to the exorcist!
The movie is literally (literally literally) one creepy idea stretched out way too thin. And it's a shame, because there was actually plenty of unused potential with this weird setup.
yeah it could have been much better

Is it me or was one of the main themes of the movie poking at her thinking about sleeping with the boy. Showing how her husband didn't want to, or couldn't have sex, was the un brought up factor throughout the whole movie.
I did think it was going to result in him telling her "you've always told me you're not my mother anyway" and them being a new couple after Messy Jesse dies.
@@Picnicl Right lol
I also guessed early on what the boy would become, although I assumed it was the exact same person in a timeloop rather than another version.
It definitly had some oedipal vibes, I must say; not in a sexual way but in the mythological one. The paranoid father who wants to kill the son; the son triumphing in the end while also sleeping with the mother. Of course this should all be taken with a grain of salt...

@@loanhongle74 I think he's human just devolved
Ok so it's not about aliens, it's not even sci fi really, it's just supposed to be an allegory for adult life and settling down in suburbia.
I find it so sad that anyone would feel raising a child is anything like what these characters experienced. You'd have to be suffering some serious mental health issues or personality disorders to have this little empathy or connection with your own child.
I know its exaggerated for the film but if that's the message they were trying to get across, there's something really wrong with the writers.
Raising a child is the single most life affirming, heart warming, depression beating job anyone can take on. A child is not some alien creature. They are a part of you.
I'm sorry but the film falls down on this point and there's really nothing else to say for it. Yes we all work our whole lives for our kids and then we die. But in the meantime we get to share our lives with them, we love them unconditionally and we receive unconditional love in return. Our existence would be far less meaningful without the years we spend with our kids.
I hate this film!
I was so puzzled by the cuckoo bird scene, I had no idea that actually happens in nature! So was it's use in the film simply a symbolic foreshadow of the dynamic between "the boy" and our protagonists? Or is there more to it?
Whatever they are, they just use other people to nest their young. "Its just nature."
I think (in my understanding/interpretation) of the movie, that it was both foreshadowing and something more. One example, watch again the beginning of the movie when the (i think) black haired woman SUGGESTED to Gemma that they SHOULD hurry because market's going through the roof, and not to be LEFT BEHIND , and Gemma responds by accepting that, pay attention, when Gemma says YEAH, in that moment you can hear a distinct birds chirping. Symbolising that what we just witnessed implanting one idea,(one cuckoo's egg) into Gemma's life. It happens at least one more time in the movie, can't remember, watched it three times so far. Clearly,i come from the branch that sees this movie metaphorically. We're just a tool for nature, for our governments,society,system.. and by that our life is full of Cuckoo's eggs. yes,it is an extremely dark, terrifying movie (interpretation). Remember also the little girl saying "I don't like nature,it is terrible". Yes the movie is done bit in a Lynchian light (dark :D ) so that you can interpret it in your own way. All we know for sure is that everything in the movie is thought through very well. Sorry for the rant lol
tbh i think just foreshadowing. imo a lot of people are slow to recognise a parasitic relationship so the cuckoo reminder helps. and probably not enough people are horrified by cuckoos. and i just realised there's an old cartoon where the baby bird (chicken?) is huge and it suddenly makes sense to suspect an alien imposter
Great movie
Looks like Jude law lol

@@NickHunter Same!
I hate movies that do not reward beautiful slowness (which it does have) with payoff. (yes, I like to think them being in house number 9 was a nod to Inside No 9.). This movie should not have included sci-fi horror elements. The horror is suburbia, is getting trapped in a TV meal kind of life. Many of us are trapped in this horror. That is the horror. They would have had more of a horror if it was theoretically, but not psychologically, possible for Imogen to escape which, in turn, meant that Jesse was psychologically held back from escaping, entirely because of her needs. This would have been more of an examination of how the world became more female-centric after World War 2, to the detriment of some males. I wouldn't have cast Jesse though - I have no sympathy for his dumb blank performances. I also would have had other people live in the community who immediately, and for no apparent reason, ignore them and speak an indecipherable language which makes the couple feel like aliens. The suburbs as the ultimate example of the banality of evil. Banality is the most evil kind of evil because if you fight it you give the impression of being domineering, argumentative, dangerously radical, 'selfishly' passionate rather than 'selflessly' logical. If you live in a post World War 2 suburb make no mistake - you are in a mind numbing container, a flattener of dreams.
my horror would be living in a big city
Big cities have suburbs too. But at least their city centre is lively. It's more English towns I'm thinking of - the suburbs here can be banal and lazy.

The boy was imitating a cuckoo bird (his boss?) and that explains the neck thing. Also, I think the boy was acting as if he is a baby bird that's why he likes to scream a lot
@@KT-yl9wc if they can't rise their own babies how are they making them in the first place?where was he going and who was he meeting when he went out everytime that lady did a terrible job at tailing him she stayed too far behind and lost him
@@troubledsoulsa8920 based on what I understand, that boy is not human! It could be anything (aliens? bird acting like humans?) But one thing is clear, they control everything thats why Gemma and Tom can't do anything! If you search the word vivarium, it is an enclosed box where animals are placed for observation and research. So that thing (alien/supernatural?) is just studying humans and had similarities to a cuckoo bird where they leave their eggs to other bird's nest and the mother bird will raise that cuckoo egg until it reaches its full grown size without knowing that it's not hers and will eventually leave her!
