    I thought it was interesting. I would have loved to see what the aliens really looked like. The closest was when the kid was impersonating who gave him the book. I wish the girl would have decoded the book a little bit unravelling the mystery. It was strange and original, which I love.

      It was a partial glimpse of a Cuckoo chick’s neck/face morphing out of the human boy. Go look at the birds in the early part of the film and more footage of Cuckoo chick life cycle if you need..
      The “alien” is a sort of cuckoo or equivalent ‘being’ deploying the same tactics as a Cuckoo does to other species of birds who’s nests they hatch in.. it’s pretending to be the same species as the parents (humans) so they put all their resources in to raising it.. literally ALL their resources.. raising a Cuckoo chick as a much smaller bird parent can work them to death..

    the movie commits the sin of setting up a mystery, promising to solve it (through a line said my Imogen Poots character), and doesn't reveal the mystery by the end. The writer set this all up and didn't have the balls to give us a proper ending, and instead just leaves us to "discuss" about it. What a cop out.

    • @happywaxtv4571
      @happywaxtv4571  4 года назад +6

      As much as I agree with the ending being left for discussion, does every ending need an explanation? I mean most movies are so "dumbed down" these days I found it refreshing that I actually had to think about what might be happening instead of having it spoon fed to me like so many movies do......But I appreciate your opinion, and thanks for the great comment

    • @andrewrodriguez4463
      @andrewrodriguez4463 4 года назад +10

      This movie is an exercise in writing complacency and laziness. It started with an interesting premise but ends without a satisfying conclusion. Most pretentious movie reviewers will love this since they believe leaving an ambiguous ending is somehow more "artistic". There a damn good movies out there without an "in your face" ending but this isn't one of them. These Aliens have been kidnaped people at least 8,000 times, that was the number on the receipt stapled to Martins bodybag. A vivarium is a replication of a particular animal/fish natural surroundings, i.e. aquarium/terrarium. The female character, after chasing the creepy 30 yr old 5 yr old (hope that makes sense) fell through whichever barrier separates each vivarium from the others taking place at the same moment in time (all the funky transitions in the house). Jesse Eisenberg found one of the prior "guest" bodybags while digging the hole.
      His death was WEAK as was hers, healthy young people don't just drop dead. Secondly, it was obvious from the onset that the "child" was unearthly and quite frankly I would have pick-axed the shit out of that kid early on. Dude, sorry about the rant #quarantine. I could go on but I've probably tortured you enough with this novel-length comment. Cheers.

    spoiler but also just my opinion
    the entire town is a pocket dimension designed by a probably higher dimensional being or a being who has complete control of the dimension. the area is infinite with infinite being relative to the dimension itself, there is no bottom to dig to and no height above it. this also explains why they can drive so far but not get anywhere because technically its only like 4 blocks or so. when the grown boy lifts the concrete that was always technically possible although either the boy is super strong or he has the ability to alter the vibration of the dimension thus moving within it however he wants. the other couples that gemma sees are happening at around the same time in other dimensions although time is relative at this level. the fact that he dug his own grave shows that the aliens either knew this was coming as they exist outside of the dimension therefore outside of its time constraints, or they are super incompetent which isn't much of a stretch, considering the type of technology needed to create your own pocket dimension and already semi infiltrate another planet, needing to learn about the species is childs play and pretty pointless. i guess if you were trapped there you would need to get to the point that the child gets the book and you'd have to take months figuring out how to dissect their language if not years. at which point you would learn of their ambitions and maybe be able to reason with them because like i said they are showing they are kinda stupid in certain aspects.

    Okay, so, my analysis after just watching this movie (SPOILERS!!):
    While I agree with the idea that this movie is about conditioning, I also believe the strongest idea in the entire thing is that of the cuckoo bird, a bird notorious for identity theft. The child (cuckoo) invades the home, demanding to be fed and taken care of and screaming (like a bird call) when not attended to. It also mimics, which I'm pretty sure the bird does too. At the end, the couple's bodies are pushed in the hole like birds getting pushed out of the nest. Tom and Gemma are the baby birds and thus continues the cycle. Gemma begins to bond with the child earlier in the film too, much like a mother bird treating the cuckoo as one of her own.
    The Older Boy also mentions that after he leaves, it is essentially her job to stop being a mother and die. This could also reflect on how societal values of getting a house and having a big family still put pressure on people today and force them into gender roles, eg. a woman is only good to raise a child and thus her role is depleted of value once they grow up. Humanity is still in a constant cycle, trapped in the housing market and expectations of others in our everyday lives. I feel like this is represented by the different levels Gemma passes through, symbolising the property ladder and how hard it is to find a way in today's economy.
    Again, just an analysis and I could be looking at obvious metaphors only.

    I guess the residential area is a metaphor for life. In it, you dig and dig until you realize that it is your own grave that you are digging (like the guy). You sacrifice and make sure that this process continues for the next generation (like the girl). And from the point of view of the species (the real-state guy) who put you there, you are just a rat lab and you must be studied. It is literally life, I guess.

    • @tomchan2559
      @tomchan2559 4 года назад +2

      Spot on. I thought the same as well. We are living in this Vivarium world that our life is already written like a script. We cannot get out. We are stuck no matter how we hard tried. The only thing that they could temporarily escape is the Volkswagen even without gas. The car has the smell that the couple liked. The music that they can dance. At the end of the day, they are still trapped with the mission to raise the child because they wanted to be released.

    He’s a Cuckoo ffs...!!!! Arghhhh.. Come on people🙈
    It’s even set up in the first few minutes for us.. Okayyy... okayyy.. I guess if you don’t know about the habit and life cycle of a Cuckoo then fair enough, but all that do will get this immediately.. I guess if you have no idea then probably you might not get it, but then again... watch the birds in the first few scenes of the film.. I only just finished watching it and my initial score is 5.5/10... however I think as I mull it over and replay the film in my head the next few days it may go up.. Due to early reviews from critics etc I probably had too high expectations for the film, but if you know the cuckoo story I think it totally debunks the mystery of the film and your suspense and confusion disappears like a deflating balloon, I reckon therefore some who didn’t get it originally will rate it quite highly but after learning the cuckoo thing your scores in many cases are going to drop. Love to hear what people think about my explanation, politeness only please 🤣😎👋🏼

      Happywax tv I love nature and studied it a fair bit so. To those who might have been intrigued by learning of the Cuckoo habit, perhaps it would inspire them to learn more about nature, because it sure is weird as hell the more you find out, it’s like a massive fantasy sci-fi world but actually real, I hope it does inspire some to become more interested in nature.. 🌱🕊🦚🦋

    Hay from Barrie On! Just finished this movie, I actually found it very good. The only thing that seemed off and out of place was the underground room by room part at the end. The scene between the two of them reminiscing on the front sidewalk made me think about the importance of human connection over the need for material objects.

Some people didn't like it mainly cause of the main character(blonde) girl but i think she done pretty good since that's how they wanted her character to be. But what's ur thoughts?? Oh and what is ur 1st name? I feel i write things to u all the time but don't even know ur name lol mine is Amy but I'm sure u knew that by my screen name.

    Great review! I thought the number nine was a homage to the British television series called "Inside Number 9". The show is similar to twilight and using the number 9 in every episode as a reference to something. If you haven't watched it I highly recommend.

    My original thought as to why the house number was chosen to be 9 is perhaps a reference to The Beatles song, Revolution 9 that begins with the lyric, "number 9" being repeated over and over again before a track that is largely unlistenable, but I believe says "get me out" when played backwards.
