I don't know how you do that, but the composition of the intro music with the scenes of the boat and the moist winch at the end is so incredible wonderful that the tunes stuck in my mind all day long. Your episodes were great before already, but since the Australia season trailer you moved to a new level.
I was at the show also, and enjoyed it immensely, but the demise of classic sailboats(morris, gozzard, cabo rico)and the proliferation of sailing condos grieves me.
Great explanation from Nick about the causes of problems with toilets on yachts. It’s almost never paper or poo that blocks toilets - hand towels, wipes and tampons excepted, they’ll block anything! No, the overwhelming major cause is the build up on the inside of the exit hose/s caused by that wonderful combination of urine and sea water. The solution? Pump for a lot longer than it takes to clear the bowl - you need to also clear the hose!
Hi all, I know you're going to hate getting more advice again this week, Nick, but you could also raise the attachment of the sheet to the job at the Klew to the topmost hole. It won't help much, but every bit helps! If it really bothers you, in the mean time, you could string a line across the deck from the kleats on the sides of the hulls and hold the sheet down like the barber haul you suggested. it would need to be kleated from pretty much the front of the hulls to have any 'pull' down effect. This would still allow the self tacking. You'd set the sail as per normal, then apply the cross sheet to the desired tension, you may then need to re-tension the jib a little. Just a working fix, your idea - to re-route the jib sheet - would be the best option. I hope you and Terysa are having fun up there (although you're both probably back down in SA now). Shame about the weather. Stay safe. Let us know when you head to Vietnam. Cheers.
We love to see the moments that you relax, and Nick plays the music the little things in life are what we miss when we are deployed over seas. Robbin Gibb's wife; of the Bee Gees, said that she would hear Robbin singing early it the morning, She said it's like being married to an angel.
Another lovely snippet of your passage here and there. On the issue of the worst aspect of liveaboard ... Sailing Sunday's latest episode is side-splitting, tears-rolling-down-cheeks hilarious. See you next week.
I’ve never sailed, would love to but I learn so much from you you both and the refreshing thing is that you guys are different in a great way . Please keep the videos and technical stuff .Thank you
"Get between bands of rain" he says, I thought a pom would have evolved the ability to shed water like a duck? 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Tip for the scale in the pipes: get your hands on some "pickling vinegar" from a supermarket. It'll do the job nicely overnight and is safe to dump overboard.
For technical information, for sailing tips, for route planning and execution, for common sense approach to issues, for good humored banter and good looking hosts (well Terysa is anyway... ah Nick is too) and for honesty you guys should be multiple times your subs figures. Stay Safe & Fair Winds !!
Hahaa, the blocked toilet will be an ongoing issue... get the water maker organised and flush with fresh, it will also reduce the smells. The ureic acid crystals are like limestone and will build up over time and not be so easy to clear. The soft water from a watermaker, or suitable marina, will work wonders... That jib is the wrong shape for downwind, the Genoa sounds like a much better bet, it will all get sorted with time, it's all part of the fun! Great video.
Great Video as always! Thank you for all the work you both put in to them to share with us! Loved the decision to crash land the drone instead of fingers or water!!!! You are both awesome! Stay safe!
One of our tanks did this but we didn’t have access to any acid to clear it. So we pumped out the tank (the marina has a manual pump). Then I filled the tank half full with water and a 1/4 cup of yeast. The next day we pumped out the tank again. Opened the valve that would normally allow the tank to dump at sea and put duct tape over the over flow vent. Then we used the manual pump to pump until the blockage broke loose and sea water came into the tank and into the pump. Not the fastest way to do it, but it works in a pinch.
Glad it was an easy fix! We thought we had to replace our black water tank and in order to do it, we would have had to destroy our bed. Happy Sailing! Looks like you're having a blast!
Oh the bottom of the G the stem you can fix a fishing rod holding system to it so you can pop it onto a rail post or into a fishing rod holder and take it down when not needed and put up quickly when needed
That reminds me of our first charter: Hamo Is back to Airlie Beach up that same passage with a ~2 Knot current *against* us. Didn't make that mistake again. :-) Incidentally, we were on a Seawind with a broken anemometer!! This series is bringing back fond memories. Thanks for sharing.
At the start you mention 30 to 35 knots of wind - thats force seven near gale so dont buckit n chuckit unless you can make sure the gusts are going to deposit contents to leeward. A truely magnificent vid.
We have a CD 30 and have the same curl on our staysail. It has self tacking boom and no way to change the angle. I would have to put tracks on the cabin top and really don't want to drill that many holes. So I put up with it.
So funny, I was like "I dont like the shape of that jib and nor did he! LOL Here in Italy in the alps and colors are aflame and the winds are truly Northern and biting. hey guys thank you for your channel! Your extra work on these vids! Love from the italian alps! Happy sails!
Could have been 5 or 10 minutes longer with more video around Airlie, just me 😃. Great as always 👍, hope the ol’ man survived, I probably wouldn’t have. 😎🇺🇸
Did you get to see the "Lady Enid" when you were at Airlie Beach? She's a beautiful 1960's ketch. I got to go for a sail on her a few years ago, just after a cyclone ripped through Airlie. She managed to hold up really well, considering the force of the cyclone. They don't make boats like her anymore.
Liked, subscribed, bell rung. I just found you or to be more correct is that you were reccomended and while I have only watched this video one so far I liked it. So here is to many more. Thank you and be safe.
Well thats interesting about the toilet as we had the same problem when we had "Pirate Pete" awhile after you guys. We'll glad you got it sorted close to Airlie. I blamed the kids lol
@@sailingrubyrose It was a shame as it made for a few smelly days and only one toilet. I assume the pipes need replacing and that boat is too busy being as its booked constantly. fingers crossed for the off season to get some maintenance.
That was nice...nice mix of sailing, fun, and all that make your life aboard what it is. I enjoy that...the actual "living" aboard. I imagine right now, mid October, you two are starting to get a wee bit excited about the 1370. I would be pretty much unable to sleep, LOL.
I have to say that Cumberland Charters seem to be staffed by some great people. We were berthed next to one of their boats which was getting prepped for the next charter, and those guys work hard, fast and seem to be very thorough.
Ahh … we can empathise!! Also have had toileting problems while chartering in the Whitsundays. You got off lightly 🤣 for us, powering into 1.5m chop for a couple hrs caused holding tank to reverse via the toilet and filled the shower in the en-suite head.
While your on the Dock could they stick a windy thing up top of your pole. It would cheese me off not having a anemometer. Good luck. Love your channel
Boating and sailing for a lifetime without an anemometer. Learned to read the water and use a wetted finger etc so no reliance on instruments. White caps usually form at 12-15 knots, reef 1, gunnels going under for reef 2. Yes, instruments can be really nice, but unreliable.
Nick's use of "Yeet" while not entirely accurate was hilarious, priceless, and entirely appropriate. "Yeet" is typically used along with the adverb "out" and not the adverb "in".
Blocked holding tank .....definitely a first word issue. However it does make me wonder if you have ordered at least one dry toilet on the new boat? Keep up the great videos.
I've always wondered why you don't come in from upwind side and land on the trampoline. It wouldn't be a soft landing if the boat was moving up and down, but the drone seems fairly rugged.
With the drone? It's because the drone is more likely to crash into the rigging which would cause it to fall into the water. If you're landing the drone by making it 'follow' you then you have more control- if it's not in the right position then the boat simply moves away from it. If you're trying to land it while standing on the trampoline, you only get one shot- if you mess it up or get the incoming angle wrong or if the boat goes over a wave or whatever, the drone will crash. So that's why we do it that way (but it sometimes backfires!!).
Lovely to watch you every week! I learned from someone that during windy weathers, to catch a drone, you might consider to hang a fishing line with a lead at the end, so you catch the line, instead of the drone itself. That way your hands will be clear from the props. Cheers.
awesome video as usual! Even if the some of the subject matter "stinks" a little. 😆I am curious, do you have a handheld anemometer on RR and you just didn't bring it with you on the charter?
Again, I'm not sure, if spendig money in a non-daggerboard cat is the way to go, or prefer a plus in terms of safety for stormy days and upwind-performance. I really like the galley-down 1260 and it's cockpit.
Such a good practice to have a relaxed reflection and download of the day and then plan the next. Do you find that this happens less when you are not sailing or do you always manage to do it?
It happens way more when we're sailing! We always have something to debrief about that happened during the day, and we always need to spend more time planning our next move because we're so reliant on the weather. Always lots of planning! But it's a great time of day to relax as well, especially when you're on the water. So peaceful.

If you cleat a snatch block to the toe rail you can adjust the barber hauler and the sheet to put the clew right where you want it.

I would be interested to get everyone’s thoughts about kit cats especially schoining cats
I’m living in SA I’m thinking about buying a cat kit and getting it built here. What’s the pros and cons
Is the water really that color or are you making it bluer? It’s impossibly lovely.
No It's always that colour on a sunny day. Subdued on over cast or rainy days.
We do put a little bit of grading on but it really is the most beautiful blue. 😊
I've been to the Whitsundays, and they are amazing, but I have to say your videos make them seem a not very attractive destination with the high winds and rain (not this video, of course).
