Nicely editing and great teamwork to you both. Thank you for your honesty. Heidi

    Whilst these things are annoying, they are bound to happen from time to time and be prepped for them.
    As a commercial ocean tug skipper and avid sailor with my partner i see one main issue.
    Nick should be lead deck and get Terysa up to a level of competent skipper. In any event like that one today it usually demands a good amount of strength using muscle groups that biologically men are around 3 times stronger in (upper back , shoulders etc).
    At this point nick wouldn't need to stress thinking of everything, more so just hand over the helm calmly without any annoying comments like " just dont hit anything " and the second skipper would happily nod the boat in the direction of the anchor whilst the 1st skipper humps the chain in, then lay it out, reset and during that time Teresa would have been looking to see if this location is still best for anchoring or better to move and manually let the chain out thats nicely flaked out ready....
    You're a pleasure sailing craft, you both need to be skippers or deckies at any given moment so one person doesn't have to take on 2 jobs whilst ranting in a crisis with a passenger looking on.
    Just my take.
    Ps. The handle was a piece of crap but just highlights further weak points for improvement in my opinion.

    Had a similar aggravation in the BVI once on a power cat.
    The admiral runs over a pennant which stops the starboard engine...which is the only thing that powers the windlass. Then the emergency release...won't.
    Ran to the stern locker for the Bruce and dropped it.
    Ended up the pennant was holding well enough not to panic, but still a solid 300 seconds of sequential Oh S_it moments.

      The problem is when you get locked into a series of solutions you thought would be the easy solution, but the failures keep coming. That makes it hard to back up the OODA loop and find a better path.
      It's Road-Runner/Coyote...the worse it gets, the more the Coyote doubles down on the chosen path. That cartoon is funny because we can see ourselves doing exactly that.

    I had my honeymoon on a self-skippered 45' cat in the Whitsundays departing Airlie Beach. First night was in Nara Inlet (like a millpond) with just one other yacht for company. Second night was at Turtle Bay. The next morning the port engine wouldn't start so the hiring company told us to go to Hamilton Island Marina to get the engine repaired with a complementary 24-hour stay. I was advised that I would be met outside the marina, since I had just the one engine, and assisted in bringing the catamaran in. No worries 👍. When I got close and radioed in, the marina told me to come in through the marina entrance myself 😳 whereupon I would be guided to my allocated arm / berth. I brought the floating tennis court in, with just a starboard engine, to my berth (downwind) smooth as silk .. an absolute complete fluke. Parts for the engine had to be flown in, so turned into an all expenses paid 48-hour stay in the resort. When we finally continued on our way to Whitehaven Beach, we encountered Kerry Packer's pleasure craft (88 metre converted ice breaker) anchored off the east side of Hamilton Island. And so on .. unforgettable 10 days.

  • @Bravo21
    @Bravo21 3 года назад +1

    Yea, without knowing the wind speed on a Cat you are at a disadvantage and its best be careful.
    For those who don't know it, a Cats sail plan is determined wind speed, or 'by the numbers' to protect the rigging because they can't heel and dump the wind or take a gust the way a mono-hull can. That upright rigging has limits on what it can take and if you don't know the wind speed you don't know if you can run with full sail or need to pull in the head-sail and take a reef or two.

    • @cluso9985
      @cluso9985 3 года назад +2

      On our cat it was recommended to reef at 22-25kts. On one of our early trips there was just my wife and I so at 18kts I decided to reef. Was truly amazed the we actually went faster, so aside from being safer, it was indeed faster. Yo see, while not heeling that much, the cat is actually burying the leeward hull creating more drag.

    the Whitsundays charter - radio scheds - best commentary ever heard.
    "Said charter yacht logged on - sought support for the provision of a new anchor - in essence, can you send us out another anchor, please?.
    A bit taken aback the charter company asked - why do you need another anchor?- the yacht is provided with one on the bow and an emergency anchor in the lazzarette.
    Charter yacht responds. we have already used those??? - "
    each time they moved they cut the anchor free. pissing ourselves laughing.

    A broken anemometer, release handle and stiff throttles show a bit of a problem with the charter company maintenance process especially on a newish Seawind 1260. I have encountered maintenance issues on a 2012 Seawind 1160 when chartering in the Whitsundays a few years ago. It was very frustrating for a family holiday but could have been dangerous for inexperienced or short handed crews.

In the morning our neighbours were being served breakfast on the rear deck below the onboard helicopter landing pad - still reckon my cornflakes were better, at least I know I earned them. Later that morning after three attempts to lift the anchor and dropping most of the chain each time, realized the safety release clutch was not working and spent the rest of the trip having to lift the last few feet onto the bow roller by hand - I have empathy for your charter boat anchoring experience (just don't get me started on repairing the fridge that trip too). Still, memories that will last a lifetime.

    Your anchoring adventure reminds me of an anchoring question I have. Can wind and current affect different boats differently such that some would swing into the wind with a sufficient current, while other boats would be affected in the opposite direction? I recall hearing that about a specific boat on another channel and wonder whether this is something that experienced sailors watch out for when they are anchoring.

    Cool stuff, nice laid back episode besides the deserved rant over the mickeymouse winch lever, which could have been very interesting in more challenging circumstances. But not so sure about how the boat handled that chop. As I was watching that section I was thinking of Ruby Rose and how she would have sliced through that water beautifully instead of bouncing along like a hobbyhorse. Oh well, time will tell no doubt, but for serious offshore sailing in what may not always be “less than 25 knots”, I’m starting to think I’d feel safer in heavy seas in a boat like Delos’s Amel Super Maramu, rather than a cat of that size. Just an armchair & long-time-ago-sailor thinking out loud.
    So that leads me to wonder if you ever have any doubts about your decision to ‘Go Cat’ and move away from a monohull? ... ☺️
    And - did you by any chance watch Sailing Zingaro’s August 27 video showing all the creaking and groaning and movement within the boat that he observed at sea in a Lagoon 500? That was downright scary, certainly did not look like a safe boat to me, darn thing looked as though it was going to tear itself apart 😳

    I am currently (31 August) sitting in Woodward Bay in the Whitsundays waiting out another blow with wind gusts to 32kts recorded at Hamilton Island, although substantially less here. We have come to the Whitsundays in our boat for several years now and it seems now that the weather these days is either very strong or less than 10kts! Climate change? Love your channel :)

    Oh Nick, settle petal. You're on a dodgy self charter boat in the whitsundays. Little jewels like that manual winch handle are par for the course. We all know what's really rubbing you raw and that's the delayed Ruby Rose 2. Lol ! Totaly understand because I'd be far worse 🤣🤣🤣🤣

      @@sailingrubyrose is it just a fancy arm extension or can you play it, and I mean play, not strum few chords? Reason for asking is that it seems so many britts (especially London snobs) like the fancy stuff and they have no idea what to do with it. Whether it’s about sailing, skiing, instruments, cycling etc…top notch gear but butt nothing happens it’s just about having the gear. Hilarious really 🤷🏻‍♂️
