I don't know what it is, but both of you seem so much more relaxed this season. You're absolutely in your element. My wife and I both love your channel. Stay safe out there!
The girls and guys at Hamilton Island Marina are legends! We were really nervous the first couple of times getting off H finger, especially when there is only really expensive stuff to hit, but witth their help and guidence it's always been a stress free evolution.
We are a belgian couple. We were planning to visit the Annapolis boatshow and visit the Seawind stand. Unfortunately COVID denied us acces to the US and the boatshow. We are eagerly following your channel to learn from your experiences with the Seawind catamaran(s). Thank you for your candor and sharing opinions. Even though on the other side of the planet, you inspire people in little tiny Belgium. Much obliged 🙏
My favorite way to get off the dock is to rotate on the stern dock line using the engines. The clue is to hold the dockside stern in place under power, and swing the bow out with the outer engine in reverse. You can even put someone on the dock, and pick them up before you leave.
The nice thing about springing out on a cat is that you don’t actually need to use a spring line at all! Ahead on one engine , astern on the other and out pops the bow or stern just pivoting in a fender between boat and dock.
Yet another interesting and enjoyable video blog. I have been watching your videos for over 18 months now and enjoy every one of them. I look forward to more details on your new boat once it progresses further. On other sailing youtube sites, I see repeats from the past week's video which eats into the short but interesting time for the video. Your videos are full of interest in sailing your current hired cat and the places you are visiting. Thanks to you both, you have accomplished a lot and made lockdowns far more tolerable for me and I am sure a lot of people. Regards, Paul
I really appreciate it when you explain the maneuvers you are making with the boat and the differences between a mono-hull and a cat. That has to be the most unique beach I have ever seen. It was beautiful on that island. I hope this series lasts a while longer.
For a decadent treat, buy the dark fruit cake from Coles, take cellophane off, push a thin skewer onto the top about 20 times, then drizzle 2 or 4 cap fulls of brandy and allow to soak through. Believe me Terysa, you will really have to keep alert then.
Welcome to my world 😩. My complaint is that it seems all electronics manufacturers use black plastic and then put the labels on in black or etch them on. I’m an old guy and even though I’ve had cataract surgery most of the time it takes an extremely bright flashlight (I think you might call them a torch) to see what I need to see. End of rant 😀
Cyclone Deb caused havoc smashing fringe reefs and heaping it all up on the beaches. the snorkeling before Deb was heaps better. We crossed paths with you during this trip and as a person who has visited the area for the last nine years I can tell you the wind strength at that time was far greater than usual.
Im always happy when you discover that something is easier on a Cat. I can see you feeling that your decision was right every time that happens. Beautiful island! TY!
I empathise with your apprehension Nick. Having sprung off that dock myself, on a charter cat, in a strong breeze, with $$M yachts all around me. Cats are easy to manoeuvre, but expensive toys nearby don't help with the nerves :-)
Reef building coral dies when it is broken off by storm or wave action (think cyclones). There are non-reef building corals that will also wash up on the shore (look for round, small plate-like coral on the beach - these were never part of the reef, but rather grew on their own, usually lying in the sand). Coral bleaching is an issue in the Whitsundays, although not as bad as farther north on the GBR. Branching corals do naturally break off and will wash up on shore, and some fish (like parrotfish) eat coral polyps and are the cause of coral branches breaking off frequently. Last - where there is excess runoff you can get excess algae coverage on corals - when it gets so much that the grazing fish can't keep it in check the algae will smother the corals, making them weaker, and eventually killing them (they will break easily, and then wash up on shore due to tide/wave action).
First time commenting. Enjoyed the video and all your earlier ones also. Just another alternative to your mooring setup, take two lines similar to your safety line, cleat them, one to starboard , the other to port and run them them through the eye of the mooring strop and then back to the boat. and drop the strop back into the water Now you have two easier to handle lines that can be released in any wind strength if you need to get off the mooring. You also have the redundancy of two lines. We use this method on our Leopard. Keep up the good work. Have fun.
Lovely! Thank you for explaining springing of dock! I hate all things docking…serious anxiety around it, so anything to help me understand different methods is very nice! Also, a few videos you guys mentioned wanting to know about hiking shoes! I worked at an outdoor gear store, and my husband and I hiked 800miles of the Appalachian Trail on 2020 (wasn’t our year so we didn’t;t finish the whole trail and only did the 800 miles). But, what I would suggest is getting some sort of very comfortable trail runner - light weight and will dry more quickly if it gets wet! This is what the majority of avid hikers use these days, unless they need the protection or a boot or stability of something more. The biggest key is that is be comfortable for you. My husband LOVES Merrell’s. Hoka One One, Altra, Brooks, On Running, Solomon, and Keen are some other popular brands! This is highly personal and not the same for everyone. Another thing is merrell are considered comfortable out of the box while keen require some breaking in - so not all brands are ready for en extensive hike and may requiring some breaking in. Altra are a wide toe box, so they don’t scrunch your toes and are more accurate to the shape of your foot, but do look slightly clown-ish and if you have an extremely narrow foot than they are not your best option. Hoka feel a lot like walking on a cloud. Also, the lighter/thinner the materials the faster they wear out and will need replaced. A waterproof option will keep your feet dry from rain, shallow puddles - if you are wading or it down pours, then they will soak through eventually and will take much much longer to dry out. Anyway, I didn’t want to go find the video where you asked because I doubt you would see this and have been meaning to share a little information! I can always give you more, if you need it, but I am sure you got loads! Also ways enjoy your videos, thank you for sharing!
Good job Nick ! That’s the exact move I would have done moving off that dock. That’s the Beauty of having two engines. With more practice you can walk the boat off the dock. I believe you will in time will come to luv a cat.
The springing discussion made me smile. I love going to the gas docks just to watch the s__t-show. Precious few know any of these tricks for getting on or off docks with line assist.
So glad to see others who can appreciate a lovely curly stick and a shimmering sea of grasses; beautiful! Your vid's always have something for everyone. 💞
It's good to see that ya'll are enjoying yourselves and learning things about the catamaran that will cone in handy later. This waiting game all of the sailors are having to do to get their new boats has to be tedious but you are making the best of it. Oh and good move on the fruit cake Nick, well done. :)
I was at a company Christmas party in Palm Beach, Comedy Club watching Dave Chappell eating a great Steak dinner. The guy across from me had his back turned chatting it up with one of the waitresses while this other guy sitting by me sucked down his dinner in like a couple minutes or less and then reached across the table.. He grabbed the other guys steak dinner and sucked it down. It wasn't a minute more the guy in front of me turned to eat his dinner and it was gone! I'm still working on mine, the steak was huge. The guy thought I was eating his dinner. Lmao. The owner of company watched the whole thing and order another dinner before a fight broke out.. I was shocked but inside I was lmao. If it's good, keep your eyes on it if you're not ready to eat it. I enjoy your videos and the education you share. Thank you
Like others watching, I too have sprung off that dock in a charter cat so I feel your apprehension, but also like your experience, we found it quite easy after all. Great video as always - keep up the good work!
Thanks, another great video. My concern with springing off is the fender popping out. The Hamilton guys are really good at not letting this happen so they can keep it simple by using this method. But some Cats can be walked sideways with helm and engines. Depending on the boat, sometimes a slip spring helps? if the boat will do it, having the confidence to walk square sideways is a great tool In the ship handling armoury. Worth a try it when you get a chance. Looking forward to the next video.
Great episode. Having been converted to the ease and comfort of catamarans back in the ‘90s I find it quite funny that you experienced sea dogs are just coming round to two hulls. Can’t wait to see you on the real thing. Meanwhile we’re just about setting off on Knot So Bad. Our RUclips channel is up and running. Best wishes. John & Sandra
I learn something new every week. About sailing and Australia Went for a short hike in the woods last week, the fall colors are fantastic. Have a nice week everybody!
Another great episode guys , you will gain more and more experience as you drive and operate catamarans in close quarters. You will find that there is no need for a springer at all , just put a fender as far forward as possible split the helm and there you go springing out without a line . Good luck.
Can also do this with a fender at the stern. Just takes a little control with the engines. You can also use the prop wash across the rudders to help out the stern.
I am with john we used hamilton marine 3 times and after the great staff shoed us the first time we just used a fender to spring off the jetty and twin engine love em dont ever touch the helm
Great job springing off the dock. I had to do that with Lil #svIslandSpirit in Maine with Hinkle's all around!!! I learned to get her 45 degrees+ off the dock then hit it hard in reverse. Our prop then a text as an anchor up current as our bow swung down street. OMG...I then backed up current off the fuel dock. Yes, springing off is key to learn.....great high quality videos you both produce. Thank you.
Why not carry a handheld anemometer? I carry one with me and use it to measure wind speed on shore before I take my racing dinghy out. And I use it to measure wind speed on my keel boat so I can use the data to make a chart of results for trim and sailing conditions. Good idea! Unfortunately we were in quite a remote part of Australia and if something isn’t stocked in the local convenience store, we can’t get our hands on it. Had we known of the problem in advance, we could have ordered one and come prepared!
I'm really surprised guys with all your sailing experience that you are not able to read the wind speed by the water's motion and shapes. It was easily blowing 25-30 knots during your crossing to South Mole. Even the channel that Terysa pointed out was experiencing 25knots. White horses first appear at 10-12knots and are on almost every wave peak at 15. Anything less than 10 generally appears as a ruffled surface on the water, most often (but not always) looking patchy and moving quickly across the surface.
Well we can read the wind by looking at the sea state, but as you know there’s some wind acceleration zones and bullets coming down from the peaks so it can change pretty rapidly from one moment to the next, plus there’s a couple of knots of tide that creates more chop when it’s wind over tide, so we could only take a guess. But yeah, it was definitely gusting well into high 20s.
@@sailingrubyrose 👍👍👍 And you use predict wind so between those two, I'd think you have a pretty good idea of what is going on. Given the hiring company's rules, I'd say your choices on any given day are fairly easy...yes/no? Anyway best of my wishes for the two of you...

One year we bailed out of skiing at Thredbo and went to Hayman Island, thinking if it's too hot to ski, maybe Hatman would be goo. As the helicopter landed, we were surrounded by people all dressed in yellow! Cute? No, wet weather gear. We did enjoy ourselves, but we had to buy wetsuits to comfortably swim or snorkel. Thanks for your videos. We were sitting on our Cat in the Whitsundays playing with our radar one evening and were very surprised that the radar was picking up all the mooring balls, at quiet some distance. ( fine if you have radar). Personally, I prefer mooring balls to blend in with the surroundings rather than bright orange or other unnatural colors. Just my opinion. As for the coral on the beach, you may be aware that you are in the cyclone belt and the season will start shortly. In 2017 , that exact area was hit with the full force of Cyclone Debby and the experts??? believe that much damage was done to the reef in that area. Maybe , that’s the reason. Anyway, thanks again for your videos.
put a fender between the bow and finger , finger side in reverse other side forward and reverse out so simple and no mucking around with lines , works on any size cat

I am enjoying the scenery very much. Great shots of monohulls skittering along under furled sails in that wind.
That was really nice, guys

What fun, and maybe it is sailing a catamaran, but you do have a different vibe. Maybe it is all those hours on camera? You've got it down. Lovely.
Ah thank you. It’s more laid back foe sure

Category 5 (strongest) cyclone Debbie scored a direct hit on the Whitsunday area, hence loads of coral high up on the beaches.

Springing off is one thing , but watched a Capt. crab walk into a fuel dock w/no more than a foot of room bow & stern Amazing control cats have !!
It's very easy but 1 forward 1 and reverse and turn the wheel it will walk itself right out That's the benefit of having 2 screws

Sounds beautiful
Great photos near the end especially the one with the sun back lighting.
Very much enjoying your cruising the Australian coast line. Hope you get better weather soon, are you going to Whitehaven beach ?
It looks as though where you are is a similar latitude with NZ cool and too windy, good episode, thanks

Great job skipper, that was a smooth maneuver leaving the dock.
Wasn’t it?! So much easier than it sounds.
I can't believe you feel for it!! Look at the weird boat 😂😂
Another great episode!
Loving the double thumbnails that only the early birds get to witness. 😊👍🇦🇺☺️
Thanks for another great episode!
Why not carry a handheld anemometer? I carry one with me and use it to measure wind speed on shore before I take my racing dinghy out. And I use it to measure wind speed on my keel boat so I can use the data to make a chart of results for trim and sailing conditions. You can get expensive models but the ones under $40 USD do the job.
Good idea! Unfortunately we were in quite a remote part of Australia and if something isn’t stocked in the local convenience store, we can’t get our hands on it. Had we known of the problem in advance, we could have ordered one and come prepared!
Never be nervous about spring off a dock with a catamaran, also enjoyed Nick pulling a old trick to get more fruit cake. 🍺🍺

No, Nick…not passion, although the same shoe does fit! LOL!
Nick i guess you will be heading to Vietnam to see your new boat in Nov, now that Covid is released. Hope all is very well with your new dream boat!
Really lovely! But, I always assumed that it was warm in the Tropics.
Same 🤨
Well done you two! Another great video! Cheers

So nice to follow you two on your dreams, and from my freezing bed up in northern Norway waiting for the first snowfall-I'm sharing that dream!🌞😎
Very interesting. Thanks. Do you a fender to pivot on? (on the bow)
Thanks for the beautiful hike
It is always an error to ask if 13 Nutellas are enough. Of course not. There is always room for more. Thanks for a great episode.
Great vid guys, thanks.
put a fender between the bow and finger , finger side in reverse other side forward and reverse out so simple and no mucking around with lines , works on any size cat
