Railroad Switching A Grain Spur, 22 Freight Cars Pulled By 1 Classic Locomotive! Long Hood Forward!

  • Railroad Switching On A Short Line Railroad In Ohio! Listen To This Classic Locomotive As It Handles 22 Freight Cars By Itself! Running Long Hood Forward Past Ancient Color Position Lights From Norfolk & Western Railway Days! This Geep, a GP15-1, works hard and gets the job done on the Cincinnati Eastern Railroad CCET. The train is running on the east end of the line and switching the grain elevator spur on its way to the quarry. It reminds me of the days when the N&W ran long hood forward pulling freight trains on these very tracks. I remember seeing the trains on this line when I was younger and my first date when I was in high school was to these very tracks. Turns out she wasn't a railroader. Lol.
    This video was filmed on a Tuesday morning. I had to take my dog to the veterinary in Winchester, Ohio because of an ear problem. On the way home I heard the crew talking on the radio about the air pressure going up. I knew the train was about to leave Sardinia running eastbound. See my video that I posted 2 before this video. I stopped at Macon, Ohio and caught the train splitting the historic N&W signals. They were shut off about 2007 and bagged by Norfolk Southern. I have the exact date written down somewhere and will find it one of these days. After I filmed the train passing Macon I went ahead to Winchester to watch them work the grain spur.
    At Winchester we see them pick up 5 covered hopper cars that are loaded with grain and they spotted 7 empties on the spur for the grain elevator switcher to pick up. The grain elevator owns their own little switcher that I have in tons of videos. When they are done here the train continues on east. They set the 5 loads off at the East End Of Mt Zion to be picked up when the loaded rock train returns. I filmed the train passing the west end of Mt Zion before they set the cars off.
    The final shot shows the train a couple of miles east of Seaman, Ohio. It is crossing Tranquility Pike with the Geep pulling 13 cars for the quarry at Plum Run and 2 gondola cars for loading raw railroad ties at Peebles, Ohio. This is one of my favourite spots. It is surrounded by farms, has very little traffic and the track goes through some very scenic curves. We see the rail head before and after the train. The track wasn't very rusty since a train went over it about 4 days previous but sometimes it gets covered in rust due to the huge amount of rainfall that this part of Ohio gets. How much rain? I have a pond with a 3 foot berm built all the way around it and the pond overflows! It takes in only rain water. We get about 46 inches of precipitation annually.
    I left after catching the train east of Seaman so that I could get the dog home but I was able to film both sides of it and got the complete switching job. I found out that the other Railfan in this video does watch my videos. The last time I talked to him a couple years ago or so he had never heard of my channel. What did you think about this video? Should I have made it into 2 videos or is the length of the video okay? Please leave a comment below.
    Filmed Tuesday, March 21, 2023 in 1080p with 60fps. Thanks for watching!

    JT: Sophie’s a trouper, hope she feels better. GREAT video, real down home action. And there’s never a need to doubt your production values or the length of your videos. You produce them and edit them for a reason, and we out here in the wild enjoy every frame. Keep them coming. You shoot the scenes that are the building blocks of the railroads and of small and medium businesses - the bedrock of our country.

    JT. Just got back from Germany. We wound up not going to Berlin. Our tour guide cancelled our private auto tour at the last minute so we didn’t get to take the ICE train. We took lots of trains though. The entire train system is a BIG mess. I speak German and got people to help us get tickets. Sometimes they couldn’t figure it out either and we had to go to the main ticket office to go to different cities. A few times we had to switch trains 4 times to get to our destination. This was just going from Bonn to Cologne. It was all worth it though. Took a Rhine cruise as well.

    JT, I agree,that little GP has a lot of grit to move all those cars. I was thinking that most class 1 railroads would have had at least 2 3000 HP engines on a train that long. I like those old signals too. Thanks for taking us along. It was crowded with all of us in the truck with you and Sophie but a good time was had.

    The logistics of switching on a short line or Branch line because you don't have a lot of running around tracks or bi-directional sidings. Apparently the grain elevator was going to spot their empties as they got them to just clear the derail. I agree that the last grade crossing has numerous great angles for photos. Take care of Sophie hopefully some rest and Medicine will bring her back up to Snuff. My beagle had the same look later in life where her ears look like semaphore signals. One up one down

    This is why I like smaller branchline and short-haul railroads; It’s easier and more realistic to model in HO/N-scale, and the trains are about the right length for one model engine to pull all by itself. Now, if I could just figure out how to get my HO-scale people to move around and jaw-jack on the radio… hmmm. 🤣🤭😆

    Mr.JT, Just watching another of your great videos. Love the down home feel. I live down in Portland, TN and we only have a CSX mainline that runs from Louisville to Nashville on the old L&N tracks. Sadly theres just not a lot of traffic. We do have a new 10,000 feet siding just north of the Kentucky state line so when we do have trains man are they impressive. Lots of DPU's. you would love it Baby. I particularly like the ones you do in Hamilton, OH. When I became a ham radio operator some friends and I use to drive up there to to buy new radio equipment at R & L Electronics. Bet you know where that's at. Keep up the good work, stay safe and God Bless You. And if you ever think of it could you give your new friend Old Jim from Portland,TN a shout out. That would be awesome. But Wait, there might be more.

    I think it was in Trains magazine several decades ago when the locomotive builders were in a horsepower race, one writer opined that for many railroad jobs it doesn't matter how many ponies are under the hood but how many pounds of tractive effort the loco can produce while working locals or switching (CCET, looking at you.) #1657 by herself can probably drag nearly as much tonnage with 1500hp as either of the B36s with 3600hp. Also note that EMD locomotives don't have "Give up" or "I quit!" as a throttle setting. 😋 The higher horsepower, he explained, comes into its own when pulling heavy loads at mainline speed.
    Hope Sophie feels better soon.

    • @beeble2003
      @beeble2003 Год назад

      It seems they have similar starting tractive effort but the B36-7 has somewhat higher continuous tractive effort. I'm not going to quote actual numbers, as every site I look at gives significantly different figures, and some of them claim that continuous tractive effort for the GE is over 95% of the starting tractive effort, which doesn't seem plausible.
